Just stumbled across your videos on UA-cam. Getting ready to build my first ever guitar. Should be fun. Going to be a Tele style also. The body will be made from a 100 year old bar wood cypress. I'm excited.
Nice results, and that's what matters. I use a similar process, and you actually want the Minwax version (with whatever varnish they put in it) not pure tung oil as some suggest, to make it work right. You can both fill the grain and get a great finish all in one. I just wet sand the guitar with Minwax tung oil using a sanding block for the flats and a piece of foam for the side contours. Starting with 320 grit, it makes a sawdust paste that fills the grain. Wipe it off completely, let set for 12-24 hours and repeat, moving up to 400, 800, and 1000 grit paper. It will be perfectly smooth, flat, and as glossy as you want. Even open grain woods like Mahogany fill up nicely. Buff it out and it's all done. 5 days from raw wood to playing it. It's more durable than lacquer and easy to repair. It's also a nice way to prep a guitar for spraying Nitro, it goes right over it very well, just let it dry for a few days first.
Hey, I know is an older comment, but after finishing my project (a guitar neck) I can see a little of orange peel in the finish, basically I did the same you've mentioned, how to fix this?
@@theother526 Just wet sand it again with tung oil. The method I was describing (and still use today) you're wiping off all the excess oil before it dries, the finish is in the wood, not built up on top of it. So at this point if I were you, I'd dry sand it down to the wood and then apply a new coat of tung oil, sand it in, and wipe it all off. Then buff it out real well. The key to this is not leaving any oil buildup on the wood. I hope that helps! It should be easy to fix.
@@rcsutter Thanks Rich, I will try it out, one last question, any wax or product that I could use for buffing? or just a clean old tee will do the trick,
I did a really thin neck out of red oak and have never had to tension the truss rod. I just put just enough tension on it when I installed it so it wouldn't rattle. Haven't touched it since. Maple tends to be quite a bit stiffer than red oak so I'd say it ain't going to be an issue.
according to the instructions on the can you are supposed to leave it on for five to ten minutes and then wipe it off, then wait 24 hours for the next coat. you seem to be just applying it and letting it dry then applying another coat then sanding and applying another coat. then repeat. since you are ignoring the instructions on the can, how long do you wait between coats? It looks great so I was just wondering.
Wonderful work, congrats. Is it right to use Tung Oil into the whole guitar parts? I'm doing it with my PRS SE A40E and a Fender Stratocaster. It feels so good, but I'm not sure if it's ok to apply it into the whole guitar.
Sorry for the ignorance and lazyness but what is that orrible splodge of white in an otherwise attractive guitar? 😉 BTW chunky neck is OK by me we haven't all got hands like minime! 😂
That thing is gorgeous, want to sell it ?. I dont know if you ever saw them put grain sealer on before the oil, but it really brings out the grain and small divits in the grain awesome.
Great video, thanks for sharing. I'm working on my first kit and am wondering if you used any templates to ensure you drilled all the holes in the right places, appreciate any guidance here as I don't want to make things any worse, lol. Cheers!
I got a problem with using tru oil. After every sanding i put tru oil on in with a clean rag, let it dry for 24h but even after the 5th finish the surface still is rough like there is dust on it. I have a flamed maple top. I dont get it. please help me :(
Use less and wipe off every little moist excess oil until it feels dry and hard..residues of oil feel rough after cured and would need rub down, sanding..check Chrimson guitar tutorial!
Looks fantastic, was there a defect in the timber on the back of the body? just wondering what the white filler or whatever it is on the back, but great work otherwise.
Can someone tell me the benefits of using Tung Oil? And how do you think it would look on an alder body. I'm refinish a guitar and I'm looking for ideas. Thank you
Luke, this is seriously one of the most beautiful guitars i have every seen. I absolutely loved this series and you are REALLY good. Do you sell your Mixter creations? This tele and that thinline jag are soooo nice looking, i would truly be interested...
if you want a better product ,considering all that work you put in ;check out sutherland welles tung oil ,its the best I've found after 20 years of wood finishing.I don't work for them r get free products from them ...im just fanatical about the beauty of the grain ...nice work.ps its all natural no petrol or plastic
Well done. I would have masked the neck pocket but not the pickup and control cavities. They look quite classy if they have a finish on the inside of them. Also if you had applied the oil more sparingly and really wiped it dry at end of each application before setting it aside to dry you would have saved yourself a lot of effort. You may have needed an extra coat or two but much of that sanding and buffing would have have been unnecessary, and the finish would have been even better.
hello! i hope i can get your attention on this, after finishing with the tung oil, does it need to have another sort of coat to protect it from moist or harsh weather? let say the very final coat/finish?
Hmmm not sure how much tung oil is in that as ingredients are no where to be found... Probably a mix with some kind of varnish to make it more shiny. :/
I am not using a Minwax product but Liberon and I also think that the final effect is not made by Tung oil but FINISHING OIL. Tung Oil will be always satin but Finishing Oil will be satin or gloss depending upon the number of coats applied.
The difference between tung oil products reflects the quality and the amount of the expensive ingredients. This is an inexpensive product, made with cheaper/darker tung oil from South America, and also another varnish like urethane. It is thin enough to wipe on, and off, which penetrates and leaves a very thin coat on the surface. Tung oil finish is not a technical term: this product is a varnish, made with some amount of polymerized tung oil and some other type of varnish. Once tung oil is heated properly, polymerized, 100% raw tung oil becomes a 100% tung oil varnish. But it is too soft for most applications, so a harder varnish is added. This is a good thing. And Minwax makes good products. The wiping varnish I use for custom woodwork costs $50 a quart and is made in Vermont, and is very light colored. Minwax tung oil based wiping varnish is $15 and is almost black. But some woods want some amber color added.. Tung oil is a GREAT finish for wood, full stop. It ambers the least, resists mildew, is the most flexible varnish, is waterproof, will not crack, and is famous for its wetting properties which make the cells of the wood look wet.
Each to their own taste, but that's a real guitar neck, for doing the business, not one of the pussy skinny jobbies used by guys who worry about their hairstyles.
@@rjlchristie Slow down man everyone has a neck that feels good to them Jimmy Page had his Les Paul neck sanded down a little so I guess he is a pussy. I like the old fat necks that came on the 60's LP's but when I first started I liked a smaller neck. Now I can play on any size neck but there are some that I like better than others. Why all the hate
Lol I love how quickly people get angry when someone likes something different! Who even cares?! If it feels right and plays well, you’ve got a winner.
Wow not 1 reply about truss rods neck size doesn't matter I know plenty of pussies that play fat neck guitars but truss rods are a counter measure against warpage or bowage doesn't matter how thick a neck is continuous torque from strings will warp or bow it so it just depends on how long you want it to last just remember they can bow or warp even with a truss rod
Looks good, but next time try real Tung Oil, it'll dry faster and look better. Minwax isn't tung oil, it's tung oil finish. Try Mowhawk Tung Oil next time
That's not what Tung Oil is supposed to look like right? I've had a guitar made, he used Tung Oil and it's a mat and natural finish. This thing looks more like varnish.
Myth busted. Plus, tung oil cures to a hard resin-like substance. Only way to die from the tung oil on this guitar would be if you ate the guitar while the tung oil was still wet. ;)
Most products labeled "Tung Oil" are not.... the label refers to the type of finish; not the ingredients. The real 100% stuff can be found but is quite expensive. Use food grade citric acid to clean the wood first. Coincidentally, I finished a homemade Tele with Tung. I hung the body from the ceiling with a wire to avoid unwanted "touching" of surfaces. I didn't mask the cavities, or the fretboard since I was using a one-piece maple neck. Still have the guitar after building it in 2009 and the finish is good as ever. Some sources claim that Tung Oil is NOT moisture proof, but I see no evidence of that.
Beautiful work ,,, finishing my guitar right now and getting to ready to apply the first coat of tung oil .
I have not tried tung-oil but that is a beautiful job. Great work.
If you do this work over a week or so and not rush it the final product comes out fantastic. Great job. Thanks
Luke, you are the real deal. This is incredible.
incredible! I've never thought it's looking so fantastic. Huge efforts! Thanks for making this video
Tung oil rocks. I swear, I get on youtube to see people put finishes on whatever just to see the grain transform.
Wow that looks great! Thanks for sharing.
Nice body and neck! i like using 1000grit to apply purtung oil. It really seals the surface.

Thanks for this great vid. exacatly how i plan on doing my KOA wood telecaster
Very nice job. what about superficial hardness and resistance to scratches?

Why tape off the routed holes if using tung oil?
Looking sweet man!

Excellent...I think my preference is for only a coat or two.
Where did you get that neck and body from? Wow that’s gorgeous. Love the stripes. Also it came out amazing.
I would kill for the flame on that neck
Great Job.
Damn Bro! I have never in my life seen anyone sand that freakin' fast, lmao! Very cool video presentation.
Is there any problem with using the oil inside the pickup pockets? Asking for a bolt on neck. I’ve seen both arguments
Everything looked beautiful, it was just that white mark that kept my OCD tingling lol
Sorry for the ignorance and lazyness but what is that orrible splodge of white in an otherwise attractive guitar? 😉 BTW chunky neck is OK by me we haven't all got hands like minime! 😂
I was curious what the spot was too so I checked his other videos. It was a rotten spot in the wood so he filled it in with molten aluminum and epoxy!
I think I would have attempted to airbrush it to mimic wood grain. TBH what's the worst it would happen?
I think I would have routed a fake control cavity cover over it. That would drive me nuts.
That thing is gorgeous, want to sell it ?. I dont know if you ever saw them put grain sealer on before the oil, but it really brings out the grain and small divits in the grain awesome.
What is your opinion on Formby's tung oil and Minwax tung oil?
Thanks.

What kind of wood is that body? Walnut??? What do you plan to do with that crater in the back of the body filled with white body filler???
Very informative video. Beautiful guitar! I'm subscribing.
didn't you use any poly or other stuffs to seal it ?
Damn I used to live under the "EL" in Chicago and it wasn't that loud...Where do you live brother.???
Does tung oil work for a surface had paint on it
I got a problem with using tru oil. After every sanding i put tru oil on in with a clean rag, let it dry for 24h but even after the 5th finish the surface still is rough like there is dust on it. I have a flamed maple top. I dont get it. please help me :(

Nice. Do you need varnish after this?
Why do you have to put masking tape on the pickup, controlplate and Jack cavities?
beautiful, was that teak wood?
Looks fantastic, was there a defect in the timber on the back of the body? just wondering what the white filler or whatever it is on the back, but great work otherwise.
ahhh ok,i see,good idea,might give ya more treble haha,fair play,looks great,is it finished now?
Mixing some of the bodies sawdust with a little glue would have made a filler that would have been hard to spot. The aluminum looks shitty.
What's the point of sanding with 220 grit after the second coat? Not criticizing just wondering
did you apply any grain filler to that wood?
You masked the places that don't even kinda matter and not the neck pocket? What is your reasoning?
That fret board looks pretty chunky.
I thought the exact thing lol that's one meaty fretboard. I wonder if it does anything if it were rosewood tonewise?
I thought the same thing, This is one fat fretboard
What is that silver stuff on the back?
Can someone tell me the benefits of using Tung Oil? And how do you think it would look on an alder body. I'm refinish a guitar and I'm looking for ideas. Thank you

How durable is a tung oil finish compared to other finishes?
I know It gets used on hand gun grips that obviously are going to get handled (no pun intended) a lot, so I imagine it’s pretty durable.
why you sand after coat 2?
if you want a better product ,considering all that work you put in ;check out sutherland welles tung oil ,its the best I've found after 20 years of wood finishing.I don't work for them r get free products from them ...im just fanatical about the beauty of the grain ...nice work.ps its all natural no petrol or plastic
Was that a polymerized tongue oil or pure? It's a really impressive gloss!
So what is the difference between tung oil, tru oil, and boiled linseed oil?
Question: Why would you not want to get tung oil in the pick-up routes ??
Thanks
You would put copper foil or shielding paint in there.
My word you're a fast sander!!!! ;)
Well done.
I would have masked the neck pocket but not the pickup and control cavities. They look quite classy if they have a finish on the inside of them.

Hey man, where the hell do you live with all that traffic? It sounded like you were in the middle of the Thruway at the Spring Valley Exit.
Would oil getting into the pickup & control cavities actually do harm?
R Ruttan
Nope. Your supposed to put at least 1 coat down in there, to seal the body of the guitar
you coulda inlaid that rotten spot on the back with gold and a few diamonds to match the beauty of the wood !!!
hello! i hope i can get your attention on this, after finishing with the tung oil, does it need to have another sort of coat to protect it from moist or harsh weather? let say the very final coat/finish?
or tung oil as the final finish that's all?
would teak oil work too?
Looks great! That has to be the thickest neck and fret board I have ever seen! How is it to play?
Andy Wolfe thick necks resonate 'stronger' inordered the thickest boat neck on my tele, its not shred friendly like my Ibanez wizard, but it sings.
What are the white marks on the back ?
Ummmmm... string angle to the tuners? what's up with this neck?
Fab job 👍👍👍
are you applying any clear on this guitar ???
Very nice! I can't seem to find a video of the finished guitar with hardware and electronics installed. Did you get it all stringed up and playable?
very nice !!
Thanks!
How much dry time in between coats?
Hmmm not sure how much tung oil is in that as ingredients are no where to be found... Probably a mix with some kind of varnish to make it more shiny. :/
Hi ! Did you polish the guitar after the coats of tung oil ? Thanks !
What is that white spot on the back?
He filled a hole with aluminum lol
Where did you get the NHS t-shirt from?
Looks like the neck is for slide, maybe?
Sliding off the face of the Earth!
Brother please name that finishing oil
Tongue oil?
Now I understand the need for masking, that is NOT Tung Oil, it's simply a varnish. Fact is that it doesn't even contain 1% Tung Oil.
Minwax should be held accountable for advertising their product as containing tung oil. There is NO TUNG oil in this product. At all...
I am not using a Minwax product but Liberon and I also think that the final effect is not made by Tung oil but FINISHING OIL. Tung Oil will be always satin but Finishing Oil will be satin or gloss depending upon the number of coats applied.

why didn't you seal the pores of the wood? The "molten aluminum" and the pores looks like crap!
