  • Time for my hand-made vintage u87i clone to make its way back into the booth. But now do I get rid of the Neumann TLM-67?

    That D-87 very much holds its own. That TLM-67 sounds amazingly smooth Mark

      It does. That smooth TLM-67 top end is where you hear the price differential.

    An original 67 is my favorite mic for recording vocals. Though I have to say that in this shootout I prefer the D87. I like the low end better and it's overall more open sounding. With what I'm listening through right now I'm not digging the forward-ness of the 67. And the 87 seems to fill the speakers more, top to bottom. I do like the 67's character though. Both sounded like a real commercial when you did the VO. Obviously the vast majority of that comes from your voice, but one mic can make it sound more real than another.

    I have a Luck Audio C800 capsule with transformerless flat circuit. Very good capsule. I will put it in a tube or FET transformer circuit and try it.

      Cool idea! I'm sure it has a nice forward sound that cuts already, but add that tube or transformer weight and you can probably get a really nice sound that cuts through anything.

    I really like the sound of D67 but I agree the Neumann really adds some grit and character while not losing the D67 smoothness. Both could be forever mics for most folks but having both is a really nice option.

    They’re perfectly different, to my ear, anyway. I like them both. The D87 is awesome, and the 67 is a bit darker and smoother, but not necessarily better. The 87 is a lot more present, I think. Be cool to hear a real U87 ai from you. I still think the Butterstick rules down on all of them.

      Yeah man, that smoky 67 thing is pretty nice. Methinks I have some more testing ahead. And a couple of other 87-ish mics here to drop into the mix down the road. The Butterstick actually may be heading to a recording artist buddy of mine for his next album, so I have to rule it out of this shootout for now. Back to the lab!

    imo the D87 slightly better for VO with the open top end sounding 'finished' already. TLM67 sounds more like a mic for musical context and midrange mix authority

    • @MarkYoshimotoNemcoff
      @MarkYoshimotoNemcoff  Рік тому +1

      That's a very interesting analysis and I think you may be onto something with the TLM-67, especially considering its top end. Thank you!

    The 87 sounds harsher than the 67 without the body. That might cut through a mix better, but at that point you could go to the LX with your VM1/103 blend to achieve what I consider to be a full, more pleasing sound.
    This is extremely subjective, though.

    • @MarkYoshimotoNemcoff
      @MarkYoshimotoNemcoff  Рік тому

      Thanks Mark! That was my original plan, but, on me, the VM1/103 blend doesn't cut through a bed nearly as well. It wins auditions like a mofo, and it's amazing on spots that don't have an energetic bed. So, in the general scheme of things, this would be for spots that have to slice through. Lately, I've just been using the Katana on these spots, but I need an 87 style mic in here for stuff like that.

    D87 still has a lot more transients! 67 is warmer and much more smooth

    Man, I like yours better! The Neumann has a sort of "telephone" sound to it that yours doesn't. Not a fan of that kind of sound that Neumann mics sometimes have. Although I still want one! Lol

    • @MarkYoshimotoNemcoff
      @MarkYoshimotoNemcoff  Рік тому +1

      Thanks Dean! Yeah, that midrange Neumann honk you sometimes get is inherent in this capsule, which is the same on in the u87. I hear it too, but I often wonder if it somehow is helping to cut through a mix. But yeah, I hear it.

      @@MarkYoshimotoNemcoff Yes, agreed!!! At first, I say OUCH!!!!... And then I think, well that will probably cut through just right! Pretty interesting how that works. Your mic sounds great though!

      It is pretty interesting. I’d love to eventually find out more about the acoustic principles that determine how one sound cuts through another.

    Neumann TLM-67 apakah sama dengan Neumann Wallet ??
    Neumann Wallet is SCAM.
