  • We can call this Part 5 of the Neumann TLM-67 vs Soyuz 017 FET series. Given what we've heard so far in previous videos, if the Soyuz 017 FET sounds different right side up, then does the Neumann TLM-67 sound different upside down? Does it still sound the same as the Soyuz 017 FET when it's inverted? Let's find out.

    Well played for getting the holy hand grenade of Antioch reference in there! To me the Soyuz sounds great but a little ‘hot’ sounding. Personally I prefer the sound of mid forward 67. Seems smoother and less fatiguing to me. But I know you’re more of a garlic butta kinda guy.

      HI Matthew! Thanks... I"m glad someone got the reference! LOL. That's an interesting take on the difference and it helps me better understand the nuances these two mics can be used best for. I often don't really process what happens in these tests for a few days since the making of them is so bang-bang, done. I think that "hotness" in the Soyuz is the number one reason why the TLM is much better suited for character voice stuff, too. Maybe the TLM is more of a "working joe" kind of mic?

      @@MarkYoshimotoNemcoff "Of course! tis one of the sacred relics Brother Maynard carries with him." I mean I think the Soyuz sounds phenomenal, but I personally wouldn't use it for a long audiobook for example. The 67 seems to just slot in to commercials too, just like your pal's wife's sample. Maybe the Soyuz is the perfect promo mic? I have begun using a TLM107 coz I find the hypercardioid pattern eliminates any boxiness from my booth. Have you ever tried that mic?

      @@matthewwolf1793 I LOVE the TLM 107, especially in HyperC. I used it on a ton of stuff for FedEx and it just sat so perfectly and had the right tone. And you're right, it did seem less boxy to me than flat cardioid. Stupidly, I sold it a couple years ago to buy the Chandler TG mic, which ranks up there with one of the dumbest things I've ever done. Also, I do have the Soyuz dialed up with an slightly more aggressive upper midrange for commercials, so it's naturally not as hot up top, but still has some polish. But man, yeah, I do plan to pick up another TLM 107 at some point. It's an amazing mic that I didn't appreciate enough when I had it.

    Since the real reason tube mics were originally hung upside down was to dissipate heat from the tube away from the capsule, it makes sense that the thin layers of the capsule would change based off the temperature change. When the capsule is cooler, it may be a bit tighter and not move as much as when slightly hotter from the tube heat moving upwards past it when the mic is upright.

    • @MarkYoshimotoNemcoff
      @MarkYoshimotoNemcoff  Рік тому

      I've heard that, too. And it makes sense. Capsule membranes are so lightweight and mylar and gold are sensitive to heat. I was surprised at this result given that both these mics are solid state and internal heat isn't a factor, so I'm leaning toward infrasonics being the culprit. So my deduction is Infrasonics in the Library with the candlestick.

    I'm curious if you'd get back some of that transformer weight if you ran the TLM into a transformer balanced pre. I know some guys who use TLM103's (for instrument miking) and they have noted it's somewhat sensitive to preamp choice. Thanks for the comparison! Very helpful.

      Thanks! That's a good question, and my guess would be absolutely, but I'd only do it for music. Transformer weight can often bite you in the butt with VO if you're not careful and trade off transient detail too much. That low end heft is often better for music than VO, where intelligibility and nuance are the primary goals. With VO, the most effective thing a transformer adds is that harmonic distortion which can help it cut better through a music or sound design bed and often that low end bump gets filtered out if it's too much. That thick low end may sound amazing in your headphones when you're tracking, but mixers and video editors hate it.

      @@MarkYoshimotoNemcoff good points. I record and mix a ton of podcasts, and I'm starting to branch out into VO and narration these days. The game changes when you're placing a VO into a music bed for sure!

      @@marmaladecream2233 I came into VO through the podcast world, too. I think the process of understanding that what sounds best in my phones isn’t always the best tonal choice for VO was the first big hurdle. Especially how too much low end in the VO will kill your mix and finding the right blend of mid forward and natural.

    I'm looking for a good mic to record rap vocals, I'm a little torn between the Soyuz 017 Fet and the Lauten Eden which is 700 euros more expensive, do you think the Soyuz could be a good mic for this purpose?

    • @MarkYoshimotoNemcoff
      @MarkYoshimotoNemcoff  Рік тому +1

      What I love about the Soyuz is that is has weight, clarity and can cut through. It may not be modern sounding enough to fit what you're looking for though. It takes EQ very well and it sounds pretty great on voice. All that being said, I don't like giving recommendations like this because every mic is a different journey for everybody and, unfortunately, the only way to ever know if a mic is right for you is to have it in your space, doing your thing with it. Otherwise, truthfully, your guess is as good as mine.

    Well, tо me the Soyuz sounds better this way. Sounds richer with more body and more of that silky hi mids, something like Neumann tlm 67 on steroids. By the way, have you had a chance to compare Soyuz to Stam audio sa47 or Nordic labs nu47?

    • @MarkYoshimotoNemcoff
      @MarkYoshimotoNemcoff  Рік тому +1

      Agreed. Yeah, there's no doubt right side up is the only way to go with the Soyuz. Sorry to say I haven't tried those mics. I generally don't vibe with mics with a 47-style capsule. Something about the way they emphasize the lows and low mids brings out a resonant honk in my voice around 600hz that scares children and puppies.

      @@MarkYoshimotoNemcoff Yeah, I get it . Then you should definitely check the Nordic nu100k which is a totally different approach with a new capsule design not based on a k47 or m7 capsules . It would be interesting to see what you think.
