In this anime video essay I give my review of the new film Haikyuu!! The Dumpster Battle. I have been waiting so long for the release of the Haikyuu!! movie even though I have been worried about the rest of the manga getting adapted with only two films. Even so I had a great time making a video essay style review on the film.

The movie is just too short. There's no reason why it couldn't of been 2 hours or even 2 hrs 20 mins. That being said, that final first person rally was perfection

They should have taken a page out of Scorseses book and made it a three hour epic.
no the whole movie sucks in general, from 2-4 points to 17-19 like from 7 minutes per chapter to 1.8 minutes how did it get so bad? the movie sucked either way it must be broken down into episodes like they did with the demon slayer movie

or perhaps its because i watched on a Friday night, when the movie is already 2weeks out, thats why the audience is not as enthusiastic as i was.

Yeah, maybe it was a little too much oppressive, it conveys him being worn out but not so much him wanting the game to move on.

I still think the movie satisfies lots of people because it hits them with something different, the actual feel of being in the match, which no other season of haikyuu gave us
I agree, and it’s worth mentioning as an interesting point of the movie. But it felt like a stone skipping over water. We never stayed anywhere for too long and didn’t get to dive into the emotional beats.
If the run time was 2. 30 hours long. No one would have complained.

My feel is that I'm deeply grateful and impressed over their efforts, and loved the movie deeply. However I'm still grieving over what we could have if we got anime seasons instead. My friend put it as "would you rather have this or a poorly animated season 5 that doesn't miss things?"
I absolutely loved this movie and I plan on reading the arc in the manga to see what was different/cut out
As much as I felt disappointed some moments and characters didn’t get the time they deserved. I also felt at the end of the film I’m so glad that I was born to get the chance experience haikyuu. The film wasn’t perfect but it was filled with passion and emotion. When life gets hard haikyuu reminds me that I can always aim higher and reminds me to appreciate the connections I’ve made. I love haikyuu!

I have only two significant gripes with the movie:
1. Why cut Asahi's waterfall ball?
2. Yaku's formidable skills as a libero weren't conveyed well. Isn't he supposed to be one of the best liberos?
Why'd they have to cut Nishinoya's foot save as well?
I thought his skills were portrayed well. He’s just doesn’t do things flashy like our little guardian.
They also cut why kuroo being said all rounder player like his serve though maybe not as good as miya & oikawa but he got a service ace some of the time
Has kageyama pointing like oikawa season 2 made it to the movie?

Watched the movie yesterday. I loved it and thought it was a brilliant decision to make Kenma the de facto main character, culminating in the downright inspired way it animated the final rally.
That entire POV scene really hit hard. Especially getting to hear just his voices and feel how engulfed he was in the match in comparison to how little effort we had seen him out in the past

I think it was both a good and bad choice to make Kenma the main character. The whole match and title of the movie is the Dumpster Battle, it's about Karasuno and Nekoma, it took SO much from all of the characters, in the manga almost everyone shines in the match (even Inouka, a personal favorite). They did like a montage where they covered every character in 5 minutes, which was a let down. The POV worked wonder but I think they should've used it before Kenma falls. Then, the "imagination scenario" where everyone is playing a practice match, should've been a collective allucination, everyone transported to that time, not just Kenma (again, the Dumpster Battle is more tied to third years than Kenma). The director is clearly bias for KuroKen, it was his choice to focus so much on them, it works for some things but not as a whole.

I think reading the manga and watching the movie will give you the complete experience of haikyuu

I really liked that Kenma was the MC of the movie and Hinata was shown as his greatest rival. They focused on their Rivalry. Though people may say other characters did not get enough time but I think season one - four were plenty of time for other characters and this was its pay off . And that end pov one can only enjoy it in the theatre's. Overall i really enjoyed it . Last year i enjoyed First Slam Dunk and This year Haikyuu
I do like Kenma being the MC and Hinata being his biggest rival/obstacle and I loved the movie but what makes Haikyu great is all the characters not just the battle between two characters. Like in the Shiratorizawa match its clear that the main focus is Karsuno finding a way to stop Ushijima and for that match it makes a lot of sense to build it that way because he is the absolute number 1 player that wins them games, however Nekoma is a team that "Connects" and they take the idea of volleyball not being a one person sport to its utmost extreme, every player on that team is there to keep the ball in the air and "bring oxygen to the brain". Haikyu will always be better when every player gets their moment and the movie just didn't have that. Kageyama felt completely absent in the film along with most of the other players. Now that being said the way the movie made it feel like we were in the game was genius and the kenma POV at the end was unbelievable there is just a lot that could have been better about the movie, still really good tho
The first slam dunk plays in a league of its own though. The fact this movie has to compare to it is unfair as there was no way this was going to be remotely as good. It's also a matter of adapted material, the Sannoh match is the unbeated champion of sport manga (I cannot believe I will be lucky enough to witness someone do as good) while this feels to me like a rushed match which uses fairly well characters who already gave it their all in terms of character development and interest to the story. If we take Kageyama or Tsukishima they both reached their cap imo and completed their arc so they have few things to add. The Nekoma team also contributed with everything they have for a long time. So ultimately what they had with Hinata and Kenma is the right choice in terms of writing because these are the ones who have not reach their peak but I feel like it's not enough, I would've wanted more of Kuro and Yaku (especially since they are no question the best players) and more emphasis on Kageyama as he's the best player on the field and had to face the best ever version of Kenma.
One thing about the Haiyku anime that I feel will go unnoticed is just how integrated SPYAIR truly is. It feels like they are apart of the family at this point, and this movie only accentuates that for me
I personally think the only part they should have not cut was that ukai and nekomata flashback, the points cut didn't weight at all on my experience.
And i cried half the movie just because of the emotions of watching haikyuu again.
Yeah, this movie was worth the wait though! I came in with no expectations and had my socks blown off! I agree with you on the Ukai and Nekomats stuff, they could had added it when we see Ukai looking at the TV for the first time. It would have added 5 mins but the movie was already pretty short
Now that i have just watched it i just realized that they have hyped this match so much as one of the legendary battles in japan highschool volleyball but never tell us why its that legendary (maybe show us one of the result in the past) so for some reason its just feel like an upgraded exhibition match of their previous game
What I felt walking out of the movie is that they did the best they could with their budget constraint. As a finished manga it really felt like the studio was hesitant to invest in case the movie bombs. I didn't feel the same emotional as the anime where Tsuki's smile alone will get an episode or two. But I also understand this isn't an anime season but a movie. All I can hope is that they listen to the fans and give us anime. Like please we're still here!
Agreed, just really hope we get to see the post time skip material done properly.

As an anime only I really enjoyed the film! I think you hit the nail right on the head, it felt like a high stakes volleyball match. The angles, the sound, the emotions all incredible. I loved that we saw the friendship/relationships shine through (a little corny sure) but that not interfering with the want to win

I think that the decision to make it feel like a real match should have been made for the final match of the manga, but yet we don't even know if that will be animated
I thought they would have a prologue about the coaches when they were younger I know it probably wouldn't have anywhere to fit but I was still disappointed it got cut

It was weird that Kageyama kept emphasizing that Hinata’s jump should sound like “bam” but most of the bam jumps sounded like his regular jumps, the rest of the sound effects were great, they had more oomph and got me into the environment.
The movie will always have a special place in my heart because it was the first movie I watched with just me and my friend in the cinema so we were just cracking jokes the whole entire time and we were loudly reacting to it

As a anime only and athlete who watched the movie, I found the 120 minutes absolutely amazing. Of course, like you said in the video, I would be completely fine and even happier if the movie were 3 hours along and they adapted every single moment into the anime, but that's just not how real life is. The movie felt so real and the anticlimatic ending, I believe at least, was purposely put to illustrate how these things go in real life. Not every game is gonna be down the last point and go on for hours and hours, even if its between two very strong teams. I absolutely enjoyed what was translated into the anime and felt satisfied but also wanting more, which I believe was done on purpose since even the characters were like that. Overall, absolutely amazing and I am definitely going to rewatch at some point. I also really liked your video on it, keep up the good work!
I think the movie missed some of the smaller details of the manga but like you said for the task given they did an astonishing job. The part that I loved the most and probably would have never seen if the series was made instead of the movie was the final scene, Kenma's POV, I currently play volleyball specifically sand and I play setter/middle blocker. That feeling of it being match point on a long drawn out 3rd set, sweet in eyes, mouth, running down your face, your feet so heavy you can't move, the falls right next to you so instantly dive for it like your life depends on it, and as you hit the ground ... every bit of exhaustion from hits you, mind numb, legs feel like lead blocks, body shaking, but you get up somehow and see the attack coming so you jump and block then have to do it again, and the ball is returned to your side it gets bumped straight to you and ... I won't say what happens because it will spoil the ending, but if you read and now watched you know what happens. For anyone who has played volleyball even somewhat competitively you know the feeling that they showed through Kenma's POV. Knowing how previous season's of 1 matches have been portrayed like the Inarizaki game, I don't think we would have gotten these heart felt character to audience connects like the movie gave us.
While another amazing season of Haikyuu!! would have been great, the movie did it justice and really showed how much everyone the characters and fans alike have grown since we started reading and watching our favorite sports anime. To anyone who actually read this whole comment thanks and since you're now here, have a great day or night depending on when you see this!
I definitely prefer the manga but still really liked the movie. It was so cool to see our boys on the big screen and it was a heart-racing experience! Made me want to re-read the manga lol
The phrase about satisfying while simultaneously enrageing perfectly sums up my thoughts about the movie. I don't read the manga, but a strong suit of haikyuu in the anime is the fleshing out of multiple narratives, themes, and characters during a game which movie wasn't able to fulfil. However, if it wasn't a film its unlikely that we would've seen the amazing cinematography like the the final point from kenmas POV. This is wishful thinking but I do hope that they pull a demon slayer and adapt the movie into a season format.
If they turned it into a season format and added content it would be a cash grab that I would love to see!
i felt like a real sports fan and the action shots were insane! it multiplied the anxiousness of watching the anime by 10 fold due to the flow and framework. it really felt like watching a real game to the point that when it was over i couldn’t believe it either!
I was skeptical and bummed out about Haikyuu ending in two films. I have to say though, what we got was excellent. It's a credit to Furudate's writing and the staff at Production I.G. for adapting it so well. I'd give it a solid 8.5 to 9 out of 10.
I still wish we had a cour to experience this match and a cour for the upcoming Kamomedai match. Here's to hoping the final film is over two hours. I hope we get a final season to adapt the final stretch of the story. That's where Haikyuu went from my favorite sports manga to one of my favorite manga, period.

Probably would work best as an OVA (with two parts/episodes). I think if it’s in the next film, it will feel rushed.
Well balanced review that captures my mixed feelings as well. It's a shame that we didn't get a season of this, but the quality of the movie is one hell of a silver lining. There is so much I appreciated about it and it was undoubtedly the peak of haikyuu from a production standpoint that elevated the source material in a certain sense. It was electric. Makes me wish we could have gotten the best of both worlds where we got a movie with this quality but like 3 hours long so it could cover everything and give moments room to breath. Part of what makes Haikyuu special is the breadth it covers in each match, and obviously they could not do that in the film. If anything it was a smart idea to just focus in on Kenma and Hinata given that restraint and choice of medium, and I liked how they handled that. Making Kenma the MC of this movie was a great choice and that being accentuated with that immaculate pov shot was so immersive and an absolute rush. It's just that each set, each play, each story/character beat was over before it even sunk in which is sad. But damn did it look and sound good though lol. The dun jump was fucking awesome. So the film felt both more and less impactful than the manga. I'm still really looking forward to the Kamomedai match.
I hope they are able to due Kamomedai justice. Just thinking about watching that match with an audience gives me chills

As an anime only found the thrill I got from watching this movie was perfect. I have not felt as excited or the anticipation for this match in years. To sit in the movie theatre and have an experience with other people that love this anime as much as I do, I can’t even bring it to words. Personally, I loved that. They cut out some of what I considered fluff. It truly was three intense matches that you were watching. Knowing what I know about each of the players on both teams, highlighted what needed to be highlighted focussed on the match. It was such an experience in all you could focus on was the players, just wanted to keep playing, they wanted to win, but they wanted to keep playing each other. And seeing Hinata have a moment where he had to fall down, and re-focus was such a beautiful scene I can’t even put it into words. He in desperation always had his team to help pick himself up in matches. It brought me back to when he was a ball boy last season, and he had to pick himself up on his own to see him do that in the middle of a match was beautiful. The growth that Hinata went through was all realized in this match. Also the fact that Kageyama literally had only to say jump higher to Hinata just shows how much of a partnership they really have. I wish it never ended and to me that is the highest compliment I can give.

I’ve heard this a couple of times but I don’t want to see a live sporting event, I want it to take its time and elaborate on all the storylines being played out.
Pretty much on point in the way I saw the movie yesterday as well. The movie was fantastic but there was a lot of things that were left out and it was a tad disappointing but again not to the point that the movie was bad by any stretch. It continued to deliver the quality and hype we’ve come to expect from the Haikyuu anime, but skipped some content I would think would’ve been beneficial and am honestly a little more worried for the next movie as there is even more content that would be skipped at this pace (ie. Bokuto v Kiryū, Brazil Arc or the Pro match at the end).
No reason to be extra worried. That movie will 100% just be covering the Kamomedai match.
Watched the movie yesterday; the pacing was like no other, it made me miss volleyball which I gave up. I do think the story as a narrative suffers from too many reaction shots and not enough story. Tough balance
It’s actually annoying to hear the other characters were pushed to the side. Imo one of the best things about Haikyuu is how much you also care about the characters who aren’t the main ones. When I rewatch moments of the show barely any of them are actually of Hinata or Kageyama.
The final POV scene is one of the best framed scenes I have ever seen in film, as a Volleyball player myself I could feel Kenma's struggles, without thinking I started to be short of brath as if I was playing, and I wasn't alone, I was with a bunch of players in the theathre and everyone felt the same
you really feel every emotion watching the film. like you couldn't take your eyes off the screen, not even for a second.
Very well said I actually agree with all your points at times the fast pacing was good while at others there could have been given more time to breath yamaguchis serve in particular was kind of a throwaway moment in the movie while in the manga it was a huge moment and it was disappointing to see

This movie is why I always watch the anime before the manga. I was able to enjoy myself in the moment without comparing every scene with what was done with the manga, or being annoyed by what was cut out. The writers and animators did an amazing job portraying the match through different perspectives
overall i thought the movie was great if not AMAZING even if some cuts didn’t make it. hoping they split the rest of the content into 2 movies more but ahhh i doubt it 😭

The one thing I think people have mentioned enough is hoe both the manga and movie work together bu giving you two different experiences that enhance each other. It seems like the staff is aware they will not adapt everything so they are st least trying to adapt it in a it in a different way and I think its working. The Pov shot is goated and now a top 3 haikyuu moment
honestly... Dude you are amazing. Like your material I can watch and it's so easy to grasp with so much interest. I love Haikyu, I honestly felt like something has ended when the movie came to an end and left me missing something to that day and it's been almost a week. I honestly can't wait for the next one but at the same time I am extremely scared and cautious. I don't want it to end because I came to really live the characters emotions and it's just frightening that this may disappear.

I left the cinema thinking I can name some thing's I didn't like but I also left smiling like an idiot which I have never experienced with any film, I was so happy and excited.
Points I didn't like where I would have liked them showing the whole match including every point but their choice to make a movie prevented that
The ending was very realistic, not every match end's in an epic rally but it felt anticlimactic, however the way they dealt with the games aftermath was done so well it didn't matter how they ended the match.

I left the cinema happy as hell but the 4 others didn't seem too happy unfortunately, heard a couple when exiting saying it was a bit boring, another guy left before the post credit scene, put his headphones on and looked to storm off. I hope he enjoyed it
That pov at the end was freaking nuts 🔥 this movie overall was awesome.
Both comics & movie captivate viewers good enough, but when you add movement, sound, BGM, and etc... Movie give you immersing experience(for example final point long cut part). problem with animation is at certain point quality goes down badly. However, by making this film movie they minimized this issue(you gotta give a lot of credit to animators for that). The only issue with this movie is that it's not for the first time viewer. if viewers don't know the behind story of Hinata & Kenma, and Karasno & Nekoma, emotion that movie brings would be less than a half. Nonetheless, masterpiece! two thumbs up! way up! btw theme song "Orange" by "Spyair" just nailed it!
i came back form the vision 2 hours ago with my friends. as a manga reader (i read them 3 years ago) i was really satisfied. sure, some things that i wanted to underlight weren't even there, but the emotions i felt were... evrything. i was sweating like i was the one playing, the rushed game felt truly like i was there, the tears at some points, the relief, the shock (even if i knew they would come), the anxiety... it was perfect. kenma was so scaring i didn't remember him like this. and i had forgotten the way the match ended so i gasped and cried. for an hour and half i was reeeally happy and enjoying myself
I really appreciate your perspective on this. I felt a little disappointed coming out of the film bc it went by so fast + cut out a lot. I reread the manga after & they cut out a lot of things not related to Kenma, Hinata, and Kuroo. I also felt like they had too many flashbacks, esp the ones from previous episodes, and it felt like there was no breathing room between important moments. I feel like it needed at least 30 more minutes BUT overall they did an amazing job + I still was so emotional and hyped the entire time. This video definitely helped me appreciate it more.
The movie had incredible pacing. The thing about matches in the seasons is that you know what the score is and how much points they need, but in the movie there are action-cut-action-cut-action sequences and out of nowhere the end of the set. I really enjoy backstories so in that regard the movie was great, but I also like volleyball and from that perspective, there are just few rallies that you can enjoy, which I think is a shame.
Also I am happy for you to have nice cinema experience. When I went to see the movie there were only six of us. The two sitting in front of me were talking to each other during the whole movie and one guy behind me was just loudly munching popcorn the whole time. By the time the credits screen started they all promptly left and I was the only left there for the post-credits scene.

I know that so many people thought it was too short and the complaints are valid. However, I think it's genuinely the best movie I have ever seen. Mainly because the plot between Kenma and Hinata hit home for me. But the high intensity and fast pace perfectly replicated how I have felt about not knowing where to go with my own passion, feeling stuck in a pit. Seeing Hinata's leg fall to the side when he was about to run up, making him unable to do a good jump, terrified me as it's a feeling I understand well. Just not for volleyball. I cried when I got out of the theatres because that movie solved my biggest problem for me, which was a lack of motivation. I was starting to resent what I loved doing and it has been ruining my life for the past month or two. After I got out of the film, I don't know what happened, but I just forgot what I didn't like about it. I feel the most motivation and excitement I have felt for months. It's pretty amazing actually. Anyway that's enough rambling but I just wanted to say to me it shows the emotions and how it would feel to be in that match to perfection.
I'm glad I read the manga first before seeing the movie as while I do feel slightly disappointed they cut some certain content, it still meant I got to experience those immense emotions naturally rather than watching the movie first then reading the manga as I feel it wouldn't hit as hard.

The kenma pov was far in away the best part it captured what it felt like to play a competitive sports match about as well as you can on a screen
One scene that was super emotional was when Hinata said to Kenma let's do this again next year and as we know Karusno did not qualify for Nationals next made me sad that this was Kenma's and Hinata last battle .
SPOILER:
Actually, they qualify for the spring tournament at their second year, they lose to Inarizaki. They didn't explain but it's implied that they didn't qualify to the Interhigh in their third yeard, only goes to Spring Tournament, getting third place.
don’t post spoilers like that! not everybody has gotten past the end of the anime seasons in the story.
Actually, that's not exactly true. The manga says Karasuno makes it to spring tournament both of the following years. The summer interhighs just have one of the years confirmed as a loss to Date Tech.
But it's extremely unlikely they played Nekoma again because they just faced Inarizaki early on again and lost

The movie experience was amazing! I got to watch it in theatre and it truly did feel as if I was watching a live match! As someone who has played volleyball for many years, Kenmas first person pov nearly brought me flashbacks of playing! THE SOUND DESIGN WAS UNREAL! It truly makes you feel every hit of the ball, every foot step, every cheer! It was an amazing movie! The only issue that I had was I wish I could’ve watched it more! Just like Hinata I just wanted the match to keep going! But for the product, its still does Haikyu! justice in my opinion! It was worth the wait!
anime only here' ... film was absolute cinema and i believe could be very well received for people who dont even watch anime. (i mostly exclusively read manga but refuse to spoil this incredible series before i see it animated)

This movie made me have many mixed thoughts and feelings, it's neither a masterpiece nor a mess.
The studio tried to put many things into a very short film, Kenma's past almost took up 1/3 of the film. Therefore, there is not enough time to describe the details of the match and how it happened from Karasuno's perspective. Because there was a lot of focus on Kenma and Hinata, many good details were cut (if these details appeared, it would be much better).
Anyway, this is a good movie, the sound and images are pleasing to the eye and the ears, the development and inner thoughts of the characters are good so that people who have not followed Haikyuu from the beginning can understand.
I know that Haikyuu fans, after watching the movie, feel mixed feelings of joy and sadness and want to watch it a second or third time. I've watched this movie twice already, and believe me, the more I watch it, the better it gets.
Hopefully the next movie will be longer (2 hours 30 minutes or more) and more detailed.
I have been reading the manga after watching the movie, and I have noticed that much of what was cut was all the commentary from everybody on the sidelines. In anime, mainly in shonen, when there is a fight, we have these sideline characters that explain what is going on. Haikyuu does this as well and also takes the time to eductate non volleyball players to the rules if needed. In the manga for this match this is very much present. There are TONS of characters watching so we get tons of explanations and commentary for what was going on or what just happened. But in the movie we almost dont. Whenerver we need to know what is going on or what happened we get it from the player's perspective. They talk, and the say or think what they are thinking or feeling.
This plus the pov shots we get througout makes it feel like the movie is very personal. Is almost a full pov movie and we the audience are the commentary.
I loved this approach for the movie because it keeps the pace very fast and it never lets go, the whole match is a rush you almost are done with the match before you realize it.
My only complaint of this movie was that it felt too short. Every decision they took to include in this movie was amazing, from sound and quality of art and animation to the approach and pov scenes. But it felt like there was more things missing. Now I am reading the manga to figure out what was left out.
Yeah I do think limiting the commentary worked for the direction they were going in. A huge benefit to the commentary is to let thematic ideas set in, like with Kageyama's growth or emphasizing that Karausno has yet to win a set against Nekoma. I wish they found a bit more time to add some of those moments but not overdue it.
I just watched the movie, as someone who reads the manga (but haven’t read to where this takes place), this is still really good in my opinion. I mean I had the spoiler of who won the game but I was still thinking “Who’s gonna win? Are they gonna pull it out?”. I really liked the tension between Kenma and Hinata, as well as the Kenma POV at the end, but I felt it was a bit too flashback heavy for my taste. I wanted more of the game lol. I still really enjoyed the movie though.
Yeah the flashbacks do flow a bit more in the manga for sure. Glad you enjoyed the film!
I’ve only read a couple of the tankubon, so I don’t have any perspective on the translation from manga to anime. What I’ve enjoyed about the anime series is how it feels like an ensemble piece. Various episodes have allowed the focus to shift from Hinata to the other characters, making them more fully realized. This is different from a lot of other sports series which focus only on the development of the main character or just one team. This in turn makes us care more about them all, and the game itself. It’s not simply about winning and losing. The previous movie was about Tsukishima and his finally truly enjoying volleyball. This movie felt like it was mostly about Kenma. Hinata is there as a friend and rival to Kenma, to inspire him and help him find his joy in the game. The movie ends with the first person view of Kenma in the game.
I also really enjoyed the end. The game is suddenly over before Hinata realizes it, and before we realize it. We want them to keep playing.
I wish the theater I saw it in was loud and hype. Since it was so quiet, I didn't feel comfortable cheering and yelling at hype moments like I usually do, and verbalizing my excitement usually lets me enjoy it even more.
I just went to watch this and I can tell you it's good, I just wish they had made it longer.

your description of dune's adaptation was exactly how I felt about the netflix adaptation of avatar the last airbender. I hated it at first but then managed to appreciate it for what it was.
I watched it with my friend and he said that it was really great. He didn’t read the manga for it like I did and I told him that he should read at least the nekoma vs karasuno match because the reading experience is all time greatness. I’m happy there was at least an adaptation though
I saw the English dubbed version with my sister last night. I never watched or read Haikyuu, but I still really enjoyed it! The animation looked really impressive, especially that last POV segment. Even if you’ve never interacted with the manga or the og anime series, you should at least appreciate all of the work the animators done to bring us this movie.
how was the voice acting? I hate the dub but I plan to take my little brother to the movie, so I'm curious if the movie's english version is any step up compared to the TV series.

for a volleyball adapation, I think its done perfectly, i smiled the entire time watching it in theatres, but I think it would have been better if it was longer or a series of episodes, as we lost so much filler and side storys, but for the entire battle, I think its done well.

legitimately that third set's animation truly was so human, fluid, and brought a physical presence i never expected to see from haikyuu. that kenma pov shot was BRILLIANT- the sound design and animation, even as kenma yells at lev for bumping into him and telling him the ball hasn't dropped yet- PERFECTION, i felt my literal heart rate increase because the tension and passion was just so well portrayed. i'm literally so sad though, i wish that the rest of the story could get an in depth animation adaptation, and i did feel like i missed asahi's moments in the dumpster battle, as well as yamaguchi's serve not getting the proper build up or impact. i also wish that kuroo's all rounded abilities and service ace's could've been highlighted more. yet i do feel like the movie did what it needed to in order to get the major points and character moments across. i just wish that they would do two more movies instead of just one- i need the kamomedai match in one movie, and then timeskip and olympics in a third movie- i need to see all the haikyuu characters as adults animated :(( I'm going to have to go and rewatch the movie soon to focus on the other details and to rewatch my favorite scenes. my theater experience was unique in that i was the only one in the theater 💀 minus the two people sitting behind me, but i got the perfect seat with the entire screen in my view point directly on, i really did enjoy going to the theaters to watch the movie, i just wish i didn't feel so depressed when leaving the theater knowing that there's likely only one more movie to come to cover all the content i want to see animated, and the feeling that the story of haikyuu: the dumpster battle captured my own feelings of never wanting something to end a little too well- so i both applaud and criticize the creators for capturing something perfect yet also removing things that could've made those feelings even more intense.
My biggest takeaway is this basically isn’t the same adaptation that the seasonal anime was, and thus has different goals. Which makes it awesome for what it is and I literally shouted out loud once I was outside the theater in hype, but fails to follow through on what the anime was doing.
The only thing everyone should be worried about is the second movie.Tho somehow i feel like these 2 movie is just used to fund maybe a new season for the show?
I don't know what they are planning but I hope they adapt the rest of the story!

As a manga reader I enjoyed so the match. The only thing I wish they adapted was the old coaches growing up and competing as coaches. I feel like that added so much depth in the manga and I was sad to see it get cutout

It's kinda weird I watched haikyuu in 2019-2020 I wasn't able to watch season 3 at the time so about a year and a few months after I (amazing match one of the best in the series) read the manga after that all the way to the end and was completely satisfied cut to 3 years later and I'm watching the nekoma match in theatre it was honestly a great experience
i think of all the matches in the show this was perfect for a movie, focusing more on kenma and hinita's relationship gave it a different just as engageing feel to other games in the series. id love 8-10 episode serires for the next game + bokutos as i don't think they can capture the magic of nekoma vs karasano. than another movie for post time skip.
I read the Manga and just watched the movie 1h ago. A lot was cut, but I still fucking loved it!
The sounds and animation were fantastic!
The animation is perfect.
But they cut a lot of manga the manga scenes. They cut Kageyama's chara development scene, they cut Yaku's godly save that makes him an international libero, they cut a lot of the rally scenes, they cut some of the reactions from the spectators, etc etc.
Personally, i hate it just because a lot of the materials were cut. Pkay rephasing, not hate, but heartbroken lmao idk
OKAY WAIT MOST IMPORTANT ONE, they cut both coaches's backstory. It literally explained on why we have the "garbage dump battle"
As someone who is anime only at the moment, I loved the movie but at times it felt very rushed, and like something was missing. Still the movie had some really cool elements and I enjoyed it a lot!
Am scared that the next movie is the last one yet there is so much left 😢
Was there something at the end, after the credits. I left before the credits finished.
Despite what little criticisms I have towards the movie I still had a incredible time seeing this on the big screen
The movie skipping the fact that Hinata slightly fumbled the first high spike I did not mind at all.
It would have been a little more comedic if it was included, but I guess they wanted to show Hinata breaking free from the cage immediately.

the movie was a great experience in my opinion just like other I wish I could’ve been given more with the finally rally and match point I really thought is this it? I wanted it to keep going hell I would’ve hopped on the court if I could but still being able to experience on the big screen was spectacular
I really hope they split the last movie into 2 movies, or 2 parts with how well this movie was recieved 😭 but it could also backfire & show them "ooh okay, they're okay with condensed movie formats, lets do the same with this last movie."
The box office success really is a double edged sword. Hope they at least do 2 more movies

In my own experience watching the movie in theaters with my friends, I felt pretty frustrated by the fact we were restrained from shouting, cheering, or celebrating out loud due to the social norms of the establishment. That being said, when you say the movie did an amazing job at portraiting the sensation of watching a sports competition, I can't help but agree.
I always thought this movie would be okay. It's one game, of course it can fit in a movie. I'm way more worried about the next movie.
