A much more casual video than usual, just having a discussion around the final movie and what's left to come. Shoutout to my old laptop I last used at Uni that somehow managed to run premiere pro and survive (did sound like a jet engine at times though lol).

I can’t believe this series is really coming to an end. Haikyuu impacted me so much, and got me to start playing volleyball going in high school. Now I’m playing as the libero in my college. There is so much technique taught through the manga. So much detail. Haikyuu is the encyclopedia for Volleyball in my opinion. You can learn concepts and techniques quicker (at least you start to understand them) before anyone in real life tells them to you. Honestly, every coach has his own approach to the sport, so most of the time you won't even hear about certain concepts...and you'll miss out. Reading the Haikyuu manga (and watching the anime) just makes you a slightly better Volleyball player compared to if you didn't read/watch it. Haikyuu is just that complete. An encyclopedia.

Even tho I still preferred 100% the anime pace over the movie pace, it is what it is.. Now that the movie making so much profit, I have faith the rest of the manga would be done justice.

The film literally encapsulated the entire match pretty much bar for bar in 80 minutes. The Nekoma match is longer than the Kamomedai and Jackals match, and Brazil isn't even an arc lmao. It's a beach tournament you don't even really see much of, and Hinata inspiring Oikawa, which is the only real meat of the "arc". Kamomedai match consists of two half sets of content and the third set isn't even properly seen.
When you look at the structural storytelling of how the film will go, Hinata becoming the ultimate decoy, getting sick and the team losing, Hinata growing his skills in Brazil to ultimately make it in the big leagues.

There's no indication so far that there will be an OVA or a 3rd movie, in fact it was explicitly stated that these two movies would serve as the finale of the series, sure you have the example of Attack on Titans having like 25 final seasons but that's an exception, so there's nothing guaranteeing that there will be more Haikyu!! anime, that's why it's worrying that unless the announcement was a marketing lie, all that there's left is a 1.5 to 2 hour movie to adapt whatever they can fit in there.

I got to the point where I thought the match was going to end in the first hour. In my opinion the kamomedai match should be the next movie along with everyone saying goodbye. Then turn the Brazil and jackal arcs into a series. One final movie to cover the rest is ridiculous to even thing about.

Missing scenes?? There was one core scene that was missing, which was Ukai and Nekomata as kids. And you can barely argue the 1 page flashback of Inuoka was integral.
When you look at the structural storytelling of how the film will go, Hinata becoming the ultimate decoy, getting sick and the team losing, Hinata growing his skills in Brazil to ultimately make it in the big leagues. Lets not pretend Jackals match was point for point like the Karasuno Nekoma match was. It was all central around highlights of Hinata and just how much he has grown despite when we had last seen him in his first year. Making a 2 hour film will work out fine, just like how any 2 hour film tells a story....

I've watched the film and it's great! Most of it is in the film BUT 1) you can't stay in the moment for even a second before the next thing happens. And 2) they're able to squeeze as much as they can because they skip points (a la matches before Shiratorizawa), the Nekoma match went through so long because you really were in the match experiencing everything as it happens. This isn't necessarily a good or bad thing, just a difference that I observed. The first point is definitely a big downside of the film. You're not allowed to breathe at all in between moments.

I expected more build-up from certain scenes and more epicness from others. It made me think that having this all in 1 movie and not waiting for a weekly chapter to build up the hype took a lot of those aspects out of it.
And without getting into the specifics for spoiler reasons, i also preferred some words used in the manga translation over the subs here since it just gave more impact.

It was good for my Kenma-loving heart, but even then I was always waiting for Kageyama, Yaku, and Noya's shining moments. I didn't specifically remember what those moments were as it's been a while since my last reread, but I knew they had them bec Furudate had always emphasized the strengths of even his smallest side characters. I felt it was criminal to basically cut all of Kageyama's highlight moments bec those also tie in directly with Hinata's.

@@smolchibi7128 I'd like to think that but I'm not holding out hope. It's not like the anime ever performed poorly. It's possible that season 4 didn't do as well as the other seasons. But it's always been wildly popular, both internationally and in Japan. That includes season 4. Hell, Haikyuu is still being used to promote the Japan volleyball league.

To me, the movie was extremes
I loved it and I hated it
I hated it because the movie was trying to fit 35 (manga episodes?) into an hour and a half.
The amazing thing that I loved about Haikyu from season 1-4 is the character arc, the inner monologues, the growth, evolution of the team as individuals and together.
This movie hardly made that impact since it's only an hour and a half long. The animation style was very different. The angles of the shots, the synchronised attacks, all those animation styles and choices were completely different and I wasn't the biggest fan.
What absolutely slapped about the movie was it was Haikyu. And we love Haikyu.

The Last Arc NEEDS to be SLOW. If they don't adapt the Last Arc with a little bit of slow pacing it won't do justice to the manga's ending.
Also there are 4 Arcs left after the movie.
    1. Fukorodani vs Mujinazaka - Doing this arc in OVA won't make any sense. Its like 90% Bokuto and Akaashi's character development. (i don't want this to be nekoma vs fukorodani where the skipped through most of the things)
    2. Kamomedai vs Karasuno - I think they can rush a bit here but I would personally like more of Hinata playing with the blockers left and right.
    3. Hinata in Brazil - I need this arc to be slow and just focus on Hinata's development.
    4. Schweiden Adlers vs MSBY Black Jackals - They need to go all out on the animation.

The film is good, I don’t see how people don’t enjoy what’s there. The points done as a pov perspective with Kenma in particular is incredible.
there’s just a feeling of being shortchanged. There’s basically nothing of even Kageyama, let alone the other members of the team. Even Hinyata gets very little time outside of Kenma’s perspective of him and there’s not enough of establishing the actual history of the rivalry either.

I honestly wouldnt mind if they cut some of the matches short. We've seen plenty of matches in the anime, and I found some scenes in season 4 to get a bit repetitive. Honestly, the most I remember from the manga is the brazil arc, further character development with where everyone ended up in the future, and the msby match. Honestly the characters themselves are what drew me to Haikyuu so much. I just hope they highlight the characters in the final movie.

I think what they did was great. The movie was beautiful, and personally I was really disappointed with season 4 of haikyuu because of the animation quality and pacing. I've read the manga, and I think Haikyuu is one of those series that can have a faster pace considering the nature of the sport of volleyball itself. I think anyone who thinks that season 5 would've been a great idea really just don't know what they want, finishing through the manga and everything I think Haikyuu's nationals saga deserves better budget than what the anime had and making it into a movie was probably the way they could make it happen.

Sticking a spoiler warning on the top for anyone who's yet to see the film, as i realised my feelings give a lot away:
I'm going to check out before the spoilers (I know the general gist of the future chapters but want to wait). But I personally feel like the movie worked because it went too quickly. This is the game things have built towards for four seasons, and it finished before any climatic spike; it's true to life where you want a match to keep going, to have fun even if exhausted, but the end result is often decided partway through.
However, that style only works for a team like Nekoma which we've gotten to know. We barely know the other team, amd Haikyu's strength is making you like the opponents through reflections on character development rather than on pitch powerups. The film still did some but jot as much because we've seen so much of Nekoma, and i worry that isn't going to be possible with future matches.

The Jackals match can be condensed. With entire points taking at least a chapter. This could get really boring in an animated format and could easily be condensed to show everyone watching the match together and to get the good points still in. I know people won't like that, but its probably whats going to happen. 35-45 minutes for Kamomedai match, 15 minutes Brazil, 10-15 minutes Jackals & Olympic scene. Does it feel short? Yes, and I'd love a S5. At this point we're not getting that though.

I agree that they will cut off 95% of the Fukurodani match, showing at least a couple of rallies but I also think they'll release an OVA with the match at some point.
That leaves us with roughly ~30 mins of each arc, Kamomedai, Brazil, and Jackals match. Which is quite good if you ask me, prolly Jackals match won't be as long as it's more of a celebratory match and wrapping up of the series. Also, the Kamomedai match doesn't have quite the moments to make it as long as other matches. Gao's rivalry with Hoshiumi can be left mostly undeveloped, and Hirugami's journey probably as well (though I'd really like if they didn't).
I have high hopes for this, the movie has been a revival for the series and it's doing reaaaaally good, so they might steer towards a more lenghty movie, or even another movie. Really hope they can deliver the great end this series deserves.

Besides the dumpster battle, they would have to make 2 movies to complete everything in a good way, and it still won't be as good as seasons. The first movie will have to contain Fukurodani vs Mujinazaka and Karasuno vs Kamomedai. Starting the 3rd and final movie with Hinata in Brazil would also make the movie a really good sequel to the first 2, since its a beginning of an entire new arc and a new movie. Hopefully this happens. I wish they would just stick to making episodes instead, it's disappointing

Prob not a good idea but make the 2nd movie's ending a cliffhanger for hinata's debut with the jackals (maybe up to his homecoming spike) and keep the rest of the match/olympics into a third movie/OVA..my hope is that it'll build up hype for the whole jackals match in the next installment
Haikyuu's last few arcs are the deepest in terms of character development and overall message (ex. "This is still volleyball") that I'd really rather not cut anything just for it to be compressed into a 90 min movie.
As a fan, there's so much to the final arcs like hinata/kageyama/asahi/oikawa character arcs coming full circle and the various post-timeskip endings (what they ended up doing after HS) that it feels a disservice to Furudate's storytelling to cut any of them from the movie adaptation.
I really hope we get a satisfactory anime adaptation to the remainder of the story..Haikyuu deserves it the most

Don’t get me wrong, Kenma’s development and story was beautiful, but the movie still lacked. It didn’t feel like a movie. It heavily focused on the game itself, and I KNOW that’s what this anime is about, but what if we got more outside clips? more backstories? In terms of becoming a season, I probably would have loved watching the episodes, but I don’t think this is worth becoming a movie. In a movie, I’d probably expect more rollercoasters and character growth scenes, which Is why I feel quite bummed. Other than that, I’d say the movie was beautiful, but quite lacking.

Otherwise they would possibly have to stretch out a budget only capable of producing a 1.25 hour film into a 2 hour film. I’m hoping that it’s longer. My delulu is hoping for a 3 hour long anime movie so that they have decent time for both games and the Brazil arc but idk if that’s even possible for anime movies. The fast pace is honestly pretty cool because it gives to the true speed of volleyball as a sport. It feels like a genuine game w/ the least amount of filler that shounen adds (which is almost always good in this case) and it makes it super epic. But if the Nekoma game was like 40 minutes instead of the actual ~70 minutes it was in the movie, I’d actually cry. I do not want that for the next games

I was already upset with the pacing of the movie honestly.. Why cutting important moments ?? It's not as if the movie was already too long, a lot of important scenes were cropped or not animated at all, and the final result looks more like a Hinata vs Kenma than a Karasuno vs Nekoma. But as the second movie isn't in preparation and hasn't even been announced yet, a reviewer said in a video that they were "putting ou a few feelers" with this movie, and that if it did well at box office (which he did), they would maybe consider one more movie, or at least 1 two parts movie, each part being 1h30 long.
