It was 1967 when It came out, I was 20 years old then and have LOVED this song since the day I first heard it on the radio in 1967. It was a huge hit then and sort of became an anthem for those of us who were around then, Still gives me chills hearing that organ part, THAT is a BIG part of the song. Normally it starts WITH the organ because there was no orchestra playing with them on the record. I LOVE it,
I here ya Stephen I was 15 and when this came over the radio I couldn't wait to buy this on a 45, I still have it and play it all the time, hard to believe Gary still has that iconic voice.
Thanks for the reaction. I love this song. It's amazing how he sounds the same singing this as he did decades earlier. True talent. Thanks Charlotte for making the request.
Yes, I still have the original 45 of this song. I did a little Wiki research on the band and the song - the original recording and video you probably watched was from its release in 1967. Yes, 1967. Gary Brooker, the man on piano and vocal, is the only remaining original member, as they've switched out players multiple times over the decades. And "Whiter Shade of Pale" was inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame in 2018 in the Singles category. A couple of interesting side notes - the organ part of the song is based on Bach's Orchestral Suite #3 in D Major. And in spite of rumors as to what the name "Procul Harum" means, their original manager said that the name came from a good friend's purebred Burmese cat. Love that! I actually have the original recording/video and this one in a playlist I created on my UA-cam channel called "Then and Now", where I do comparisons like you were talking about - original recordings by various artists and then their own performances years later. It's really quite fascinating. In case you want to check out some examples, here's the link: ua-cam.com/play/PL_IubgA87Q6HLiAeQ7Rla2RfK7s5Z_Rv6.html
Spot on brother! 👍 Great reaction and analogy! I think his voice sounds better now than it did then! I like the raspiness! Gary Brooker, he's still got it!!🎤 Awesome! Love your channel! 👍
Brooker still has his awesome voice in this live addition. Whiter Shade of Pale was a phenomenal song, getting up to #4 in L.A. in June 1967. (#5 on Billboard). Wish he would have played all 4 Stanzas of the song, though.
I actually like his vocals in this, more recent live version better than the vocals in the original recording. There's more rasp there that comes with age, and it lends the song something more than what a young man's vocals could deliver. His vocals are really strong; most people's voices don't age that well.
Gary Brooker of the band Procol Harum wrote and first performed this song in 1967 with his six piece band. You can find this version on youtube. His voice is so much better now than it was back then. I had been reading online that the meaning of this song had to do with a sexual encounter gone awry but I disagree totally. Although some of the lines don't make sense to me, it is obvious that the guy is performing before an audience and he's higher than a kite. He's feeling sick and wants to quit but the crowd called out for more. "The room was humming harder as the ceiling flew away" is the effects of whatever drug he has taken. "When we called out for another drink, the waiter brought a tray." He's performing in a nightclub and drinks are served on a tray. I agree a lot of the song is mish-mash but Gary explained that. He said that he was high when he was writing it and some of the lines just fit the space he was trying to fill so he put it in. He's still a genius in my book. The music omg!!!
@mutantplants1 Over the years this song has been featured in many movies and TV shows, from The Big Chill in 1983, to Oblivion in 2013, to Widows in 2018. and recently in American Horror Story in 2021, just to name a few, so if you think you've heard it before, you probably did.
I watch another reviewer who said the intro was in C minor and it changed to C major for the song. Sadly Gary Brooker died recently. Liked your review.
I have watched a lot of reactions to this song. Your video is by far the best, especially all the close up shots. It seems like no one understands the song , a little research of it should be done by everyone first, would really appreciate the song more. There were 4 lost verses that were found that explains the song.
Best version! His Voice has only gotten better. 1967 I believe, they made it!
"Conquistador" from the same Denmark concert was also impressive.

I think he sounds even better! Like fine wine, gets better with time!🎤🎧
I was 14 in 1967, and 54 years later it’s still one of my top all time favorite songs❤️❤️❤️
Jeez...Gary Brooker has STILL got it!!

Procol Harum-the name, roughly translated from Latin, means ”beyond these things”

Heavily inspired by Bach!
Check out Jethro Tull " Bouree'( Bach!, Crazy flute!).
And Elegy!

Loved then and now. Sadly R. I. P. Gary Brooker. I like that treble clef on the lapel too.
A Whiter Shade of Pale was released in 1967, the height of the Vietnam War! Gary Brooker’s voice never changed.
The song was released in 1967 the keyboardist/vocalist is Gary Brooker.

If you didn't know the original you might think someone had added words to a piece of classic music.

What a great song. takes me back to 1967 and the war, makes me sad.
