.....yes our pets are a sick lot! Why? Over vaccinations, neutering, (oh, did you think the hormones where just for decoration?) The flea spot ons, the flea collars, (imagine breathing that in 24/7,), the commercial food = low in nutrients!, the sprays in the garden, not enough exercise, airfresheners, being locked up every night for 8 hours in the laundery or garage. The fumes of washig powder and soaps, petrol fumes, paint fumes etc are a killer. Breath that in every nightThe biggest is our " food" pizza, chips, chocolate, bread, etc!

UPDATED--Dr Judy, i just found you! I have watched this video and read the comments. You are so very impressive!!!
My baby, Rocco (min schnauzer) was just diagnosed with stage 2 ckd. His potassium was very low, but BUN, phos, creatine, protein, were high.
    I now make his food:
    80% Veggies/20% Protein:
    80% VEGGIES-
Cabbage, Broccoli, carrots, arugula, cauliflower, Green beans are slow cooked al dente' then cooled.
I then add fresh Broccoli sprouts.
    20% PROTEIN-
Fresh raw chicken with bones (ground small) *I interchange beef/bones with chicken/bones.
    Raw Green Tripe
Nutritional Additives: *(most of these are combined into a tea).
    1 T of tea daily.
    Alpha lipoic Acid,
    Essential amino acids,
Activated charcoal, salmon oil, japanese knotweed, olive leaf extract, CQ-10, Potassium, hawthorn berry, dandelion, colostrum, parsley, echinacea, marshmallow, milk thistle, vit d3/k2, vit E, fermented vit B, and moringa Oleifera.
ALL OF THESE ARE MIXED TOGETHER AFTER ALL INGREDIENTS ARE COOL.
I add 2 shakes of Himalayan Pink Salt on top at each serving.
Rocco has been been on this regimen for 4 days and is a new dog!!!
    UPDATE 2-15-24
    Rocco had blood tests yesterday...
For the last 2 months I have reduced some of the additives.
My young vet said, Rocco is a freak of health! Blood panel still like a puppy!
    UPDATE 4-27-24
Rocco had another blood test and he still has the blood panel of a puppy and the energy of a greyhound!

3 month old mixed breed puppy spiked creatinine to 5.9 while receiving treatment at emergency hospital. We brought him home with a 'poor prognosis.' When asked what we should feed him, the vet said it didn't matter. Very discouraging! I immediately did some research and began experimenting with home cooked foods. 4 days later, his number had dropped to 3.5! We are administering SQ fluids and antibiotic. Another week and his numbers dropped again to 2.5. He goes back tomorrow and we are anticipating an additional drop. Our miracle puppy is on the mend, very active and has also gained over 3 pounds. Thank you for the encouragement and information about healing nutritionally. I have just received your cookbook and look forward to creating more great meals for our good boy.

My 16.5 year old cat was diagnosed with CKD about 6 weeks ago, stage 2. She grew up in another home and was given mostly kibble. When I got her a couple of years ago I put her on ready made raw plus some very good quality wet food and her muscle mass and fur improved greatly.😊 It has been a roller coaster since her diagnosis though... 🥺 She doesn't really eat the veterinarian foods. (Who can blame her?🤪) And she went from perfectly "fine" (except for the puking ofc) to crashing and shaking bcs she just wouldn't eat the darn food. And ofc I have given her other foods then but nothing really works and when she eats her regular food she starts to puke again. 🥺
She only ate the veterinarian foods if given appetite stimulants but now she hardly does that anymore. I've been looking for a home made food that is with quality ingredients especially for cats with CKD. I found your 2 recipes but sweet potatoes, millet and turmeric are too high in oxalates and flax seeds are very estogenic.
I'm after a recipe that's higher in fats instead of carbs. You talk about this in this video, that fats are better than carbs so I struggle to understand why your recipes are with carbs instead of fats? I have searched high and low for a carnivore CKD recipe for cats and I haven't found any yet....I need help quickly! If anyone knows how to put together such a recipe or where to find it, please tell me!💕

My first dog died of kidney failure at age 17. I had a cat die of kidney failure at age 14. This was back when I fed kibble and Canned. I started feeding my dog A raw diet but I still fed my cat kibble and canned. A few years later my cat got acute kidney failure, I still have no idea what caused it, it came on very suddenly like within two days But he almost died. This lead to chronic kidney failure. The vet said he didn't have much of a chance but I should take him home and feed him a special diet, we all know what company it was from, and subcutaneous fluids. From my past experiences I was a pro at subcutaneous fluids but I tried the canned special food for two days and gave it up. Since then I have fed him nothing but Raw and he is doing great. I haven't given him subcutaneous fluids in eight months. His blood levels are fine and the vet is shocked. I will never go back to kibble. I know it's hard to get cats to transition sometimes but it's worth it.

What all do you feed your pets as far as the raw diet goes? I just can’t get my dog to eat liver even lightly cooked. I don’t think we’ll be able to transition her.

    • @nogames8982
      @nogames8982 2 роки тому +8

@@benicio1967 try grinding all the ingredients together. And they don't need a lot of liver so don't overdo it. But if it's all mixed in together they can't pick and choose. I start with a basic mix of 80 1010 also meet, bone, and liver and other secreting organs. Then I add some veggies to it, maybe some green tripe, sometimes I feed canned sardines or canned mackerel as a meal.
If you can afford it buy something like Stella and chewies or some other brand of a premade raw mix. If your dog will eat canned, slowly mix in the raw with the canned until the dog is eating only raw. My dog isn't big on liver, if I just throw down a chunk of liver she may or may not eat it. But if it's all mixed in she eats it. That goes with basically every organ that I fed, liver, kidney, sweetbreads, lung etc. it might take a little bit to transition but I bet you'll be able to get there. I transitioned my cats, it took two months but now they eat raw like crazy. I feed turkey, chicken, pork, beef, duck, fish like sardines and mackerel, occasionally tuna, green tripe. Frozen, canned, or puréed veggies like broccoli, green beans, sweet potato, apples, blueberries. Occasionally peas and carrots. Some people say feed fruits and veggies others don't. It's kind of up to you.

Thank you Dr. Morgan for this video! I make my dogs homemade food. We just found out our adopted dog has heart murmur and also his K+ is 3.3 and BUN is 42. He's probably around 9 years old. Vets suggested lower but better protein diet. I was a little skeptical on the lower protein part and went online to research and found different information. I switched grains to barleys and added more vegetables to the porprotion. I'm glad I ran into this video before I modify the protein level. I'll continue with the same amount protein and monitor the blood results. PS. We are also trying to test at lower dosage of Lasix. :)

Hi Judy, my 5 year old Luna was diagnosed with kidney failure. The vet did not do any X-rays, has not obtained a blood pressure reading, and recommended dialysis with a specialist. Day 1 they hooked her with IV as she was severely dehydrated but day 2 they stopped as her body started retaining the fluid. Her urine was green on day 1, a cloudy yellow day 2, dark yellow with blood Day 3, and has been dark yellow for 4 days now. The vet said she has a UTI in addition to kidney failure, my dog had trouble breathing due to the fluid but is breathing better now as I have been wrapping her legs like they do for lymphedema patients and performing visceral massages. She drinks a lot of water and urinates frequently. She has a decrease in appetite and eats very little food at this time. This all started Nov.7th and now it’s Nov.13. Her initial blood pane on 11/07 levels indicated: creatine 2.5, BUN 79, Phosphorus 5.5, total protein 5.7, albumin 1.8. She last had her blood panel tested on Nov. 9th and hematology results indicated: creatine at 2.3, BUN at 72, phosphorus 6.7, total protein 4.3, and albumin at 1.4, ALP at 10. All other levels are normal. In her urinalysis on on 11/10 her urine creatine was 73.4 and urine protein at 1,728.8, urine protein:creatine ratio 23.6.
She is currently on anti-nausea meds, blood pressure meds, blood thinners, probiotics, antibiotics, b12 injections, eating what she can (chicken, apple sauce, rice) but she is only taking a few bites maybe 4 ounces of food every day. Today she continues retaining water but not as much as she can now breath, her urine is still dark yellow despite all the water, is semi- active as she still gets excited over short walks. I scheduled her for acupuncture as a last trial and have yet to see if it will help. Please provide your recommendations.

About the tripe, does tripe from venison or birds work? I can't get it from farmers with cows, sheep or pigs in my area, but from hunters who hunt wild animals. Which is why I'm asking. Idk if you'll see this, nor know if it works the same way.
Also, is it possible to feed kibble if you moisturize it with water and omega 3 oil? I bought a bag from the vets' office, and I hear you say you should stay away from dry food. But if I bring back the moisture, is it appropriate? (I really don't wanna waste a big bag if it's possible to use it yaknow)

The recipes I seen are crockpot cooked recipes. I understand that different stages are going to require certain changes.... However, with just the BUN slightly above normal and Urine came back diluted a tab as well. For precaution was told to change his diet up as he previously was on freshpet being cooked food but with synthetic vitamins etc... I previously had him on raw, so i decided to switch back to raw but now i'm hearing cooking the meals would be better due to the phosphate? Or am I overthinking this and raw still would be fine just limited?
Are the meals in the yin and yang book also cooked? or are there raw meal plans?

My 12 year old dog, Rocco has stage 2 kidney disease. His symptoms were lethargy, stopped drinking, and kidney infection. I looked at his lab report and corrected his defiencies. Rocco was deficient in potassium, so i increased potassium. Rocco was too high: BUN, phosphorus, calcium,
Creatine, so i determined to lower these. And I did!
    Diet:
    Kidney food-
In a crockpot i slow cook 8 cups veggies-
    Cauliflower
    Carrots
    Astragulus
    Cabbage
    Meat- 2 cups (1 lb)
Raw green tripe from RAW PAWS.
Green Tripe is extremely nutritional gut lining of grass fed cows.

    2/3 c. Of raw meat/cooked veggies.
5 drops liquid Max ND vit B.
    4 drops liquid vit D3/k2
1 t. Lemon Juice or ACV.

1 t. Herbal tea. (How to make herbal tea) 1 T of each of the following: Hawthorn, ginko, echinacea, marshmallow, dandelion leaf, astragulus, milk thistle, Nettle leaf, parsley).
1 t. Amino acids as follows-
    (L-Leucine, L-Isoleucine, L-Valine, L-Lysine HCl, L-Threonine, L-Phenylalanine, L-Methionine, L-Histidine HCl, L-Tryptophan) all acids are included in one package of Essential Amino Acids).
    1/8 t. Colostrum
    1/4 t. Horsetail
    1/8 t. Moringa Oleifera
    1 t. Salmon oil
    5 drops japanese knotweed.
    1/2 t. Olive leaf,

And yet a dog can not digest it, if you really want to feed your dog well , read the book of canine nutrigenomics jean dods. Yes a dog with kidney problems needs its proteine from fresch meat. This lady here is correct. A dog can proses fresh food very wel. And aging with kidney problems is not because you did something bad. Ist commen among dogs and cats. Ist how they are made. Not what we want for them, but it is in there genetics. Fresh meat is better than these vegtables, dogs can not proces them. Only herbs en meats and grains, but grains cannot with kidney problems. Hey Judy. Thanks for everything you do. I'm not sure if you could reply to this or not but I thought I'd try because I'm at wits-end at this point in time with my 11 year old Chihuahua Terrier mix (17lb dog).
I had her to our regular vet because she started having a bit of a wheezing/coughing episode over the last month and asked for xrays and bloodwork. The vet, which doesn't have a cardiologist, and is only a GP, indicated that her creatine level was around 290 which indicates that her kidneys are slowly getting bad (but didn't mention kidney diease to me at all.. it wasn't until further research on my own time that I ran into this as a possibility). On my dogs X-Ray the vet said she was on the borderline of having heart disease (she has a very faint/barely noticeable murmur and slightly enlarged heart). Which again didn't help me with much basically just left me wondering. They prescribed her to 1.25mg of vetmedin 2x a day (once every 12H) but I'm paranoid to give them to her. They also prescribed me to avanti kidney plus (1 scoop a day) powder and advised me a royal canin kidney canned food diet would likely give her the best shot at a longer life.
Is it fair to assume kidney disease based on such a creatine level? Any advice for somebody that doesn't have any other options for vets without having to travel 12h+ via vehicle? All of our local vets are GPs and I've had 2nd and third opinions and they haven't been very helpful. Theres a 6 month wait for her to see a cardiologoist too unfortunately.

You mentioned that you don't worry about phosphorus until about stage 4, but if cat is eating a commercial canned food or dry (god forbid), many of these companies use tricalcium phosphate which is even more bioavailable, and many pet foods are quite high in phosphorus, or the calcium is lower than phosphorus, which actually raises phosphorus even more.

Hi Dr Judy, firstly thank you for all you do, So much gratitude for all your info....you have helped our family more than you know!!!
So, long story but Ill TRY to keep it as short as possible. We adopted a 7 year old deer hound about 8 months ago. We do not know his history but he has obviously not had the best life, all we know is he is an ex breeder...we suspect puppy farm from his behaviours and fears in the first few months. We had bloods and full check up done and apart from numerous other problems he was diagnosed with stage 1 kidney disease. We were instructed to put him on a kidney diet by our wholistic vet at the time...mostly white rice, potatoes and a little bit of chicken. He did terribly on this diet. After many questions regarding the diet not working for him (we kept being told to just keep persisting, he will get use to it!!) My wholistic vet finally put him on Hills Renal diet (Wholistic vet....really!!!!???) I finally switched vets for a second opinion. Bloods done by this vet showed 3rd stage kidney disease (this is in a space of 3 months) I was left wondering how this could advance so quickly?! Although they diagnosed 3rd stage KD they were concerned the blood tests did not really add up so requested a ultrasound. Ultrasound revealed he only has one kidney and was born this way. Also revealed 1st stage heart disease but Ill leave that for another time!! Prescribed Treatment was for monitoring of blood pressure and continuation of Renal kidney diet (Hills)!! This did not feel right for me and is what led me to hours of research.......This is when I found YOU!! I have purchased both of your books and have our Tali boy on your kidney diets from Yin and Yang for dogs. He is doing really well on this.....Thank you!!!
So my question now is...considering our boy does not have kidney disease but only one healthy kidney should I still be following the kidney diets in your book? I am also mixing meals with the heart disease diets since that diagnoses. So I am not sure if I am heading in the right direction with this??
I love your books and U tube channel, I plan to purchase your blood test reading package as soon as I can. As much as I respect the veterinarian profession I have learnt that they do not know everything and unfortunately most are not open to other ideas or suggestions. I vowe to ALWAYS be my pets advocate, don't really care if I piss people off anymore....will do what it takes to protect my family!!
Thanks Dr Judy and Gwen.....Appreciate and love all that you do!!

Hi Dr. Judy, just wanted to thank you for being so helpful with your advice.
My 17ish yo old was diagnosed with diabetes several years ago and within the last year, ckd. I’ve been in search of finding good foods that he’ll actually eat that aren’t prescription diet. Concerned about the calcium levels in certain raw food because they grind up bone in the ones I’ve found. A vet online recommended the “wellness” brand (pate), his cat has the same issues as mine. Just curious about that brand and what you might recommend.. thank you so much :)

    • @judymorgan4241
      @judymorgan4241 2 роки тому +2

Not a fan of the brand. Depending on stage of CKD, protein restriction is not recommended (I only restrict in stage 4). You can buy meat and organ grinds without bone, but you will still need some calcium in the diet. Restricting or balancing phosphorous is more important. Check out Hare-Today, Raw Feeding Miami, and My Pet Carnivore. Dr. Harvey's Canine Health can be used to balance the meals with whatever meat you choose and is what they recommend from among their bases for kidney disease dogs.

My question to you is what is the next line of treatment? We went to our vet and are now doing Sub Q fluids and will do this at home if need be. Our vet never found out what the cause was but its believed to be a toxins or poison and not lepto. We still do very frequent blood testing to check his BUN and CRE levels to make sure hes at normal levels and hes been doing fine since. But he did spend 7 days in the hospital with a very aggressive liquid dialysis that reduced his CRE levels from 4.4 to 1.6. Is it ok to soak kibble in water? Would that be similar to canned?

    • @judymorgan4241

You can soak it but it doesn't come close to the moisture provided by a high-moisture diet. Kibble is dead food with added synthetic vitamins and sprayed-on fats for palatability.

Thank you so much for all your videos. Our 6 yr old dog was diagnosed with CKD a year ago. Her Creatinine was at 2.15 at the time and stayed stable for 3 months till it began to climb slowly. When she was at 3.8 we had her admitted after which it came down to 2.4. We've continued with fluids at home since, and it had sort of stabilised somewhere between 2.8 and 3.1 for two months. Following which it has begun to climb again - we're currently at 4.12. We live in India, where summers are very intense, and she seems particularly affected by the heat, could her levels be climbing because of the weather? Or is this an expected trend considering it's been a year? She's currently on a high dose (20 ml/kilo) of IV fluids at the moment, but we're treating her at home, since she has a cannula on, twice a day, 2.5 hour sessions, as she refuses to eat when she's at the hospital. She's an extremely picky eater and she picks out mostly parts of the meat from her meal. We're struggling to feed her a balanced diet because she's so picky. She used to love fish, but now she's gone off it. She likes chicken, but only the bits near the bone, and she loves eggs. She's on all the supplements, but we're at a loss as to what to do when all she'll eat is small bits of chicken and eggs, especially as her levels rise. Her phosphorus is at 7 and has been fluctuating between 7 and 8 over the past couple of months, but doesn't seem to be coming down any lower despite her low-phos diet+phos binder. Urea and BUN go up and down depending on her fluid dose. And her last urine test from a week ago came back fine. I've been following your videos, but we're unable to go by the book as she's such a picky eater. What would you advise that we focus on when we're dealing with a picky eater and the disease is progressing?

My shihpoo girl/6yrs old has been really sick. She has lost a lot of weight, vomiting at first… I took her to the animal hospital and the X-rays showed her kidneys (both) enlarged. Phosphorus levels at 16. I took her back the next day for an IV. She is on an antibiotic every 12 hours and hunger stimulant. That’s all they really gave me. The blood work shows no bacteria but she was already on the antibiotics bc I took her to the humaine society vet when this first started.
I am trying everything to get her regulated but she is so weak and eating small amounts at this point. Mainly just chicken. She turns her head to everything else. :( what would you suggest to regulate her levels quickly?

    • @judymorgan4241
      @judymorgan4241 2 роки тому

Hopefully this is an infection that will respond to antibiotics and fluids. If it is a toxin that caused the kidney damage the prognosis is worse. She may not be able to come back from this - it will all depend on how she responds to treatment. She won't die without food for a few days, but she will die if she doesn't get enough fluids - so focus on that for now.

Is hard boiled egg good for kidney disease?

  • @alanhuynh53
    @alanhuynh53 2 роки тому

Hello Ms Judy. I have a quick questiion if you dont mind. My dog doesnt have a disease per say but his blood work came back high in 2 areas. The HEMATOCRIT came back at 59.9% and the Reference Value levels should be between 38..3% - 56.5% so its about 4% too high im assuming. The other level that was a little high was the BUN which came back at 33mg/dl and the Reference Value on that one should be between 9-31 mg/dl so i guess its 2 mg over the safe zone. My vet put my on Hills low protien food but my 5 pound chihuahua does not like it and he seems to be sleeping alot more. I use to give him raw chicken with vegetables which is why it is probably a little high. I didnt know much about a balanced diet before but i am trying to learn what is best to give him at this time at the age of 5-6 years old. Thank again you for what you do Ms. judy.

    • @judymorgan4241
      @judymorgan4241 2 роки тому +1

You absolutely should not feed the dog a low protein food. Slightly high HCT and BUN could mean the dog was a tiny bit dehydrated at the time of the blood draw. High BUN does not mean kidney disease, so a prescription diet is absolutely wrong.

@@judymorgan4241 I'm back again 😁 I had a question about parsley. I see it always warned against in one of the CKD groups I'm in. The person who warns against it says it's a diuretic and kidney dogs need to stay hydrated, not have moisture forced out of their bodies.
BUT, a lot of foods are natural diuretics. I think parsley is unfairly picked on. I was cautioned against it myself when I mentioned I'd used it in a meatloaf recipe for my KD dog. The horror, eh? lol
From you, I've learned parsley is a blood tonic, it's neutral (I'm pretty sure my dog is hot) and it treats stagnation. You say here in this video that the kidneys are all about moisture in, moisture out, to get the bloodstream filtered and cleaned. I know Dr. Connor Brady also writes about diuretic herbs in his kidney disease articles, about them flushing the kidneys.
Can you assure me, once and for all, that parsley is totally fine to use in my KD dog's diet? I don't mean copious amounts, I'm reasonable with everything I feed him. He does have a high moisture diet, although gently cooked, not raw.
