    I have a 12 year old long hair chihuahua that I've had since 8 weeks old. She has been the best most loving dog ever and my closest friend. 4 years ago they said a cough was due to CHF and put her on lasix and enalpril. In the last 6 months or so she had occasional upset stomach. I asked the vet and they said irritable bowel. In the last 3 weeks she suddenly lost alot of weight and her but muscles and in her back are gone. She wouldn't eat anything but table food. She developed diarrhea with bloody mucous. Took 5 days to get her into see the vet. Wed, the vet said her labs showed kidney failure, and he thought she also had pancreatitis. He only offered two options, put her to sleep that day or admit for 3000.00 hospital stay and treatment. She had no fever. My husband and I took her home to basically we thought die but we stopped her meds lasix and since then she has gotten better every day. No accidents, no diarrhea, no blood, and she is eating like she can't get enough of food. I have changed to KD diet trying to learn best how to make her food. The Hill KD diet can we got she will eat over white rice but I have made her food in the past and learning what not to put in it and what are good foods to include. We are taking her to another vet Monday morning for a second opinion. She is really bad anemic and I think that is the hurdle to get across right now. I have ordered iron supplements for her. She will be 13 in 2 months. She never stopped wagging her tail and I can't believe they offered to put her to sleep.. I'm convinced the lasix and the enapril caused kidney failure in her.

      After my 4th visit to check my jack russel bleeding in his urine, and the last alternative is to check for cancer, the vet decided to check his blood pressure and found out that was a little elevated. Crossing my fingers for the cause is the heart medication and not the cancer. But I can't believe took so long to be checked his blood pressure

    Thank you. Our vet started our dog on Azydol when my dogs kidney levels were off and it has made a big difference. His pancreas is/was slightly enlarged, but after an U/S seems to be within a normal range. Unfortunately he also has seizures. I've been making his food for awhile now but your info on things to add is really helpful. He's not much interested in dry kibble, which had me worried, but I see now that it's not necessary.

    Great info. Thank you so much. I have a Holistic vet and am working with her on my Toy Xolo currently who will be 2 in Jan. We don't know what's causing her burping (indigestion?). The xrays ultrasound looked good except US showed possible CKD. That's odd to me since she isn't even 2 yet. But labs were normal. So, again a bit odd. I'm doing low fat diet as recommended for now and adding tripe tomorrow plus raw egg yolk. Some soft boiled egg is good because certain nutrients are more bioavailable if cooked lightly. Using digestive enzymes and getting probiotics soon, trying to decide which ones.

      Acid reflux can be caused by food intolerance (an ingredient not agreeing with her), food stagnation, Stomach heat, or Liver Qi stagnation. I generally use herbs to help solve the issue. I like Bao He Wan for food stagnation and Jade Lady for Stomach Heat. I use herbs or food to move Liver Qi stagnation. Hopefully, your holistic veterinarian will be able to determine which is the issue.

    • @judymorgan4241

      Yes, you can make homemade diets. You need to avoid foods that are high or moderately high in oxalates. There is a list in my Yin & Yang Nutrition for Dogs book, along with recipes. You can also find lists of amount of oxalate in foods online. There is no need to use K/D with restricted protein until late in kidney disease. Restricting protein too early can actually cause more harm. The excess weight comes from eating a diet high in carbohydrates.

    Hello Judy, Thanks for this video! Our beloved Coco (a 13 year Shih Tzu)has been diagnosed with Kidney Failure and it has really been a struggle. She is currently at a point where she doesn't want to eat any dog food anymore. I believe that this problem occurred after our home was sprayed by Terminex (which we left home and stayed overnight at a hotel) but she hasn't been the same since that time period. She has lost a lot of weight and many times when we take her outside she walks around and circles. It's really devastating for the entire family. I would like to know what you would recommend as far as a meal plan (home cooked natural meals) that I can start preparing for her so that she can at least start gaining weight. She has finished all of the prescribed medication given by her Veterinarian and is only taking Azodyl

She enjoys rice baby cereal and turkey sweet potato baby food mixed together. Carbs are good. Try Entyce, an appetite stimulant. That also works well. ❤

    I have an overweight Chihuahua 10 years old she was diagnosed last September with bladder stone she was put on a prescription diet and the one stone that they can still see did not dissolve it’s too small to operate and apparently the veT thinks it’s Stuck to her bladder Because it’s been in the same spot for over six months ,, She recommend staying with the kibble prescription diet because even though it’s not dissolving the stones it’s not making anything worse I would rather have homemade food for my dog but after trying another vets recipe online her pH balance is usually eight and I know that’s too high I do have her on a cranberry supplement and since then She hasn’t had a UTI …. Can you recommend a diet for her? Diet depends on type of stones. The dog may not have a stone; what they are saying may just be calcification of the bladder wall from chronic irritation. A low pH can be achieved by feeding a low-carbohydrate, high-moisture diet. It can be home-made or gently cooked or raw.

I cook for him turkey , chicken and salmon mixed with eggs ( shells included) and quinoa . I weigh every portion to make 720 grams balls for each day. The balls are frozen for 2 to 3 weeks . He eats half a ball in the morning and another half in the afternoon . I add a cup of brocoli or pumpkin . In between meals I give him cooked carrots ,berries or an apple. To make sure he is getting all the nutrients i give him multi vitamins , fish oil and probiotics . Sometimes he begs for food we eat . So maybe this is what damages kidneys I believe. They told me she is very dehydrated and best to put her on fluids for a few hours and get a blood sample. One hour later vet called me and said it isn't looking good ( my dog is a 8y old English foxhound) her blood is full of toxins and her kidneys had shut down. They suggested the best thing to do put her down !!??? I said NO WAY i will get a second opinion. They told me they can try and give her antibiotics and fluids for 48h , take another blood sample and see if things improve. I agreed. this morning the vet called me and said , thats she is doing much better and she even ate some chicken but want to keep her on fluids for another day. Yesterday they suggested putting her down and after a day of fluids she is doing better already !!! What are my future options ?? while i am typing this, Vet just called again. they want to keep her until Monday the least (more money i guess) and continue Fluids. Today is Monday, my dog is at the vet for the past 3 days on fluids. She is better and her blood phosperos reading are half but they want to keep her another 2-3 days on fluids. I’m so confused after watching this video. My senior pup has pancreatitis and chronic kidney disease. She is losing weight rapidly even though she is eating her little heart out. Everything I read says no organ meats, only egg whites, oatmeal is high in phosphorus. I’ve been feeding her a cod, white rice, sweet potato, broccoli food recommended by the naturopath from Justfoodfordogs. I was also provided an alternate chicken liver diet. How are these ok when their phosphorus is high?

    • @judymorgan4241
      @judymorgan4241 2 роки тому +6

      That is a very low-fat diet, so she is going to lose weight. You need to make up the calories somewhere, so more carbs are needed since you can't increase protein drastically and if there is a true pancreatitis, you can't add cooked fats. Raw fats are usually okay. Most of these dogs do not have true pancreatitis; they just have elevated amylase because that isn't being cleared by the kidneys. You cannot eliminate phosphorous from the diet. If the phosphorous is high the dog should be on phosphate binders.

    I was upset that my vet told me to go on kibble. I was seeing two different western vets at same clinic. First they told me she did not have any kidny issues and then I was told she did and I was switching back and forth between kidney and non kidney food. Then because of all the confusion they offered a third blood test a few months later for free and I found out most of her values were normal except the SDM value and then the vet told me your dog has allerfies to proteins so eliminate proteins and go on Royal Canine Hydrolyzed protein Kibble. I have been so upset because I do not agree with Kibble at all plus she has not been a drinker and I have had to mostly give her water by mouth all the time so kibble is awful and so I would like to know what canned food can I buy and where that is lower protein and has no chicken. I know she does have a chicken allergy. When she was on Hills canned K/ D food after being on that a month or so she got an ear infection and that is why the vet thinks I need to stay off proteins. ZHe said it is not from the chicken fat in that food but there is caramel color and other bad stuff and sugar that could have caused the ear problems . I will not stay on this Royal Canine hydrolyzed protein. Its been a week and with her not drinking I have to give her more water myself by mouth and her bowel movements are much drier. What is the healthiest food I can order if she only has high SDM value of 14 so just before kidney disease and when she was on regular protein food it shot up by almost 9- 10 points. Is there a healthy lower protein, no chicken ( she has alletgies to chicken) and she is a little higher on potassium but not abnormal so she has only one value heading towards stage 1 the SDM value and I want to know the best wet food non chicken food not too high in proitein? Is a vegan diet good or something else? If I should cook the food should I try Hilary's diet or a canned food? I am not sure why they keep thinking she has allergies to beef as she only got itchy infected ears after eating hills and I dont like this dry royal canine hydrolzed protein kibble.
