FujiFilm GFX100S - All Of The Megapixels - Review

I got my gfx100s last month. During 1 month using it, my eyes just get used to this crazy 100m pixels. I have canon R5+RF 70-200 F2.8 too, but now, the photos shooted form r5 seems always be a little bit blur. In fact, r5 is one of the sharpest camera in the world. But comparing with gfx100s, your eyes just can't go back anymore.

@@claudianreyn4529 I have an R5 & a GFX 100s. I think the colors from the Canon are easier to get what I want for skin tones. I like the GFX 100s for anything else that doesn’t have people in it. Not bad on skin tones, just more work for me later.

I have a choices like nikon z9 wich is able to record 8k video 12m minutes , sony alpha1 , sony alpha r7iv 61 megapixels newest model ilcm4a , and the canon EOS R5 , you mentionned you have it , isnt it ? and i love the canon ef 28-300 mm old lense and wanna use it with the canon eos r5 with an adaptor , i used before nikon d810 and d850 with 28-300 nikkor and took fantastic photos ! i love the wide angle and long zoom , so what you think about such combo?
and sure the other chice is also the gfx100s wich doesnt allow me to sleep well ))))))))))
i am not a pro but do it for my pleasure my friends my family )))

Insane how you pulled that under exposed photo back. When people tell you 16 bit RAW is useless you can refer them to this.

Thank you so much for this excellent review! I especially love that you share the experience of what it means to pull detail out of a dark and under exposed image. I currently shoot with a Pentax 645Z and looking to move on as I love the image quality however there are some technological advances that it lacks. One major concern for me was the image quality and the detail that is preserved and your demonstration certainly helped me tremendously. I greatly appreciate you!

Love my GFX50s and had originally ordered the 100s but couldn't wait. I am not a sport photographer and don't rely on taking loads of random photos so for me, auto focus speed fast or slow is not an issue.

The reason I just went for the older, heavier GFX100 was because battery life is longer and the tilty finder thing - I can see that would have come in handy on this shoot!!!! And I went from Hasselblad H6D100c to that so in actual fact its lighter, smaller and faster too. I heard people complaining about AF on the GFX range. Wow what do they want to capture? Individual light particles? Although with 100MPX I am already seeing individual atoms.....

True. The Images someone would require fast auto focus for likely does not require 102mp ironically enough but in reality, it doesn’t matter so much. The auto focus will improve. And people will do the best they can with tools they have and or can afford. I loved my Nikon d810 and my canon 5d I had before it. My current cam as well, each had greater image quality before the next.

Yeah hopefully they will send out a review unit. They use to always send review units before release so I could have an early look video out. But they stopped doing that with the xt5. So now I don’t get review units till like a month later unfortunately

Yesterday I had a 100s in my hands and I was hooked. Men, ergonomics are so much better than my SL or A9.
The only thing I don't like is that the function buttons are too small, particularly the AF on button. Otherwise I'll try to sell my other gear now including Olympus EM1 mark II.
Hopefully I can by than the 100s and the 80mmf1.7.
I took a few pictures in the shop and was impressed with the details and the shallow depth of field.

Nice review. Fuji GFX50s I always shot in AF-S mode. Even though eye AF is no good, the shots turn out better compared to my A7R4 when I look at the eyes. Just got my GFX100s and can't wait to do a real shoot with it.

@@suatsekil - colors wise, it will be the same. I would buy based on AF. If you don't care fro AF, then old used GFX50s is a very good buy as you can use the tilt adapter.

A1 is miles better than the gfx100s. But there’s a vibe that you get from the gfx100s medium format sensor that you don’t get from the Sony full frame. And it’s 100mp vs 50mp. So Fuji is double the megapixels

For the tracking sensitivity in Video. You must set it to 0 for the fastest. The +2 and +4 have confused me too.

Agree on the statement. But Sorry, are you currently working with which one? Transferring from Sony A7R3 ( not going back there after Fuji experience (GFX50R n at the end S..). Decided at the end to go with the 100S. The possibilities regarding cropping if needed with the image quality is overwhelming. Can’t argue between the 50/100 just because of that.

Interesting to hear your comments on auto focus problems and it seemed as though you were using the 80mm f/1.7 mostly in this video (plus 32-64mm occasionally). Did you find the 32-64mm any better? Have heard lot of similar criticisms of the 80mm based on current firmware, but apparently those problems are nothing like that with the 110mm f/2. Interested to hear what lenses you tried with it and any differences.

Nice review, Lee. I am impressed with DR and the level of detail, unfortunately coming from the 50R it seems that the AF-C is improved but not at a level of confidence yo use it in all situations, like you mentioned. But definitely a gem for high res work and when full frame is not enough.👍

I think if you are coming from the gfx50 then yes the autofocus is improved. Like I said I’ve been spoiled with really good eye af so it seems sluggish like the glass in the lens is so heavy and the motors struggle to move it haha. Thanks for watching

hi Lee, did you test Smallrig L bracket for GFX100S? I received it today but unfortunately is not a match and there is 2-3 mm empty gap between the body and grip, that is why the small finger and hand cannot hold the camera properly and is not comfortable at all sadly and surprisingly! any comment please?

@@mortenthorpe, perhaps you're correct. However, I'm a hobbyist Canon DSLR user for last 14 years and see no reason to ditch these wonderful imaging equipment for anything else. If at all, might get an EOS R3 a couple of years later. That way all my awesome glasses remain active. I shoot nature, wildlife and street scenes for pleasure.

Mmm I’m not sure. Depends on the lens. You might find yourself manually focusing a lot. (Which might be fine) for the trade off in insane dynamic range and image quality

Thank you for this review. My only concern with this camera is how fragile and cheap metal is the body made of. Pay attention to the bottom plate with so tiny screws. Once I have mout it on a tripod I was nervous to break the bottom. I can see the tiny metal moving .

I could be the lenses I had to work with. I’ve heard from a few other people that have used the camera and said similar things that it was hit or miss. I’m mainly disappointed in the eye af. Regular af-s was pretty good

I can also confirm that it's pretty rough. I chalked it up to the GFX100 that I used it with but now I know it's the lens... and perhaps just the whole medium format GFX system in general. The whole experience is clunky and slow.

Some GF lenses need to have their firmware updated to use PDAF....you should check.

Disappointing ? It depend from your perspective and experiance on what you calling disappointing.If you using FF then yes, GFX is not so fast with AF (tracking + lens).If you coming from Hasselblad (or anything else in MF) this camera AF is space ship and it blows away all competition away .I think that the best thing is to ask "compared to what".

Yes. I found that each of my GFX lens have different auto focus speeds. This is due to the motor types in each lens plus firmware. Shifting the small lenses in comparison to the nearly double sized GF lenses also makes a difference. The photographers knowledge on camera systems will make this slightly less surprising but many new and young photographers are coming from within the narrow sphere of digital photography with APS and APSC or 135mm(“full frame”) as their benchmark for auto focus speeds. “Full frame” and lower lens image circle sizes are very small meaning the lens can be very small and light. This translates to very fast and easy movement of glass and plastic elements throughout the 135mm and smaller systems. As you increase the image circle, the lenses get bigger and heavier and slower.

I think Fuji has trown the 50s users under the bus by releasing the 50sii to this price. Completely made the old expensive versions worthless. Not OK.
