  • What are your thoughts on Medium Format? Is it the future for Fuji? I thought this would just be a 50mp version of the GFX100S but it is a lot different.

    Too slow, amazing how all the masters of portrait prior to 2000 could create their work. Must be some kind of magic, or we are just too incompetent and stupid to do reall photography today. Or just hoodwinked by greedy companies selling useless gear that we don't need.

      I think that prior to 2000 only the best would be nailing manual focus from years of practice. There was a lot less pros. Like imagine sports photography before autofocus? Crazy stuff. I also assume the photos weren’t nearly as sharp as now too

    I use the GFX50R for dance and portrait shoots. AF performance looks very similar to this one. I only use it in single point, single shot AF mode. Anything else is unreliable, especially in low light. But lenses make a big difference: the 50/3.5 is much better than the 45, and the 110 is ok too (better than the 80 I'd say). Different AF motors etc. Image quality is fantastic of course 🙂

    I'm always surprised when people ask those "is it too slow" questions. Maybe I'm just old, but I was there when the digital revolution came about, I've shot film for many years and I think that EVERY SINGLE digital camera is at least "fast enough", most of them being "way faster than necessary". At least for portraits, I'm not talking pictures of birds mid-flight and sports.

    • @gaarakabuto1
      @gaarakabuto1 2 роки тому

      Eh, the reality is that the industry wraps around the standards of technology so in some cases you need to get to the speed of a company or magazine or something, leading to simply preferring what simply works.
      I have used GFX for concerts and I do get the pressure of getting shots within a period of time, but I also think that these scenarios are rare in the portraiture industry.
      I greatly feel like GFX is much slower in editing though and I would say that that's the real downside if anything.

    • @SMGJohn
      @SMGJohn 2 роки тому +1

      Thats true but how many shots did you miss with your film camera because it was too slow? Technology will always move forward and I agree for most people, they always buy overkill cameras, but with faster cameras these days and getting cheaper as well, opens new possibilities.

    Owned for 2 sessions and returned it. It’s a fantastic camera don’t get me wrong but it was the unused resolution that just didn’t do it for me. Even for my big paying clients, 90% of the work was going on Instagram so the end result was no better than my XT4. I just reinvested in better lights.

      For me the mega pixels matter less now that cameras are all kind of pushing 33-50mp. It mainly comes down to tonality and medium format image. Personally the camera feels way to slow for me. But I know for some people shooting products etc it would be perfectly fine

I've been very disappointed in the EVF on the 50SII, where the quality is so poor that it's practically impossible to manually focus a lens through the EVF. If you want super fast and intelligent focus for highly dynamic situations, then go buy a Canon 1Dx, which operates around 20MP. The GFX series brings amazing photographs and it is fast enough for most cases. You get 50MP or even 102MP depending on the camera. The DR is amazing and the raw images allow you to do great things with the photo in post. I have the GFX100 and I love the beast. It is extraordinary.

    Slow… I use a H3D II… Lets stop over hyping “speed”. Thats why everyone shots the same today, spray and pray they get a shot. Not “planning”. So many photographers just lcd screen shoot and miss crucial micro moments in expressions or movement. Im glad I stuck with old slow cameras. Always put my work ahead of my peers who use mirrorless and all the fancy gadgets but never seem to connect with the subjects. Theres a psychological aspect of shooting models through a view finder because they arent just connecting with the camera, but you. It challenges them. Ive shot models for over 10 years and the best results are not from rear view shooting, its a bad habit and fundamentally has draw backs for people photography.

    Great video! I picked up the GFX 50R recently due to the deals and used market pricing. I think for the GFX camera you definitely need to have patience compared with what you get from I.e. Sony, Fuji and Canon. It’s definitely a slower photography process but those photos are 🔥🔥🔥

      Any time I have a Fuji camera in to shoot with I try af-c and always remember it’s hit or miss. That said. The newer f1.4 primes Fuji released are very fast and smooth and I could trust them more for face and eye in af-c. 18mm,23mm,33mm

      @@LeeZavitz Thanks - I'll have to play around with C-AF more as it sure seems to work for you. I've used it outdoors ONCE for some candids and it did well with moving subjects and some head shots. I'm rocking the Viltrox 23mm f1.4 and 56mm f1.4 atm while learning the ropes - both are impressive lenses with little to complain about. When the new Fuji 23mm can be had used, or when they release a 56mm Mk2, I'll be pouncing as I realized I love both these lengths for indoor/outdoor portrait type stuff.

    And your shots are fire by the way, how do you work out the styling - do you tell the model the colors to bring and they show up with something in that range, or do you concept each items of clothes and have to source them somehow? The play with color combinations in your pictures is really satisfying and inspiring.

    I bought this camera three weeks ago, without the opportunity to try it in advance. To say that I'm upset is to say nothing. autofocus just killed me. 😰😰 Fuji has been on my shelf for three weeks and I’ve been photographing on a Sony A7III with its powerful autofocus. Perhaps I haven’t figured out the Fuji autofocus yet, or maybe it really constantly misses the model’s face 🙈🙈. (even in ideal shooting conditions) 😢

    I know feedback helps camera brands to make "better" or faster or bigger gear... but I find absurd how many people only complaint about camera features that just a few years ago were not even on the map. Before GFX having multiple AF points and fast AF in a medium format camera was just an idea, a wish. With Hasselblad cameras you had to deal with just one single centered AF point and people used to make it work you know? Now, even with all the mind blowing stuff packed inside a GFX camera we seem to be impossible to please... I know it´s the way of progress and things will get there soon but still I think it's a wrong user approach to expect a medium format digital camera to perform as fast as a full frame or APS-C camera.

    I'm really torn about the GFX 50S II. I feel like every shot you got there which were amazing would have looked pretty much the same with the XT4 with the correct equivalent lenses. I had the fuji bug bad and wanted the GFX50S II but the autofocus and the price although I could have afforded it put me off so I got an XT4 and it's been amazing. And since there are the f1.0 f1.2 and f1.4 lenses available for X mount I feel like you really aren't losing out on that much background blur compared to medium format unless you get very expensive medium format lenses and are trying to achieve a very specific look and give up practicality. For example that 45mm 2.8 GFX lens you were using is pretty close in focal length and background blur to the 23mm 1.4 for X mount.

    • @LeeZavitz
      @LeeZavitz  2 роки тому +2

      I think it would be closer to the 33mm f1.4. But I agree with everything you said. Unless it’s more resolution, better lowlight performance and way better dynamic range. medium format is the way to go. Outside of that it would be hard to tell the difference shooting the same shot

    • @NickDelDuca
      @NickDelDuca 2 роки тому

      @@LeeZavitz Yeah 33 is the right one not sure why I typed 23. But yeah photons to photos dynamic range chart shows that the GFX has about .7 stops better dynamic range than the XT4. That might help in some situations or might be unnoticeable in others.
