I made your turkey baster fountain set it on the balcony. I saw a hummer go crazy bathing in it within 12 hours. It was the cutest thing I ever saw watching him take that bath! What a great idea thank you Robbie

Last night I froze some hummingbird food. I am so thankful you provided that idea. It hit 103 today. I was able to add frozen pieces today to the feeders. They loved it while it lasted. I will be freezing more this evening. The birds are drinking from the fountains constantly. I ordered another pump to put out another fountain. With this heat, they need all the help they can get. Thank you for all your amazing ideas.

@annemurphy9339 (1/4) one-quarter cup of Granulated sugar to 1 cup of water. Dissolve the sugar in the water. Make sure it is room temperature or a bit cool prior to putting it in the feeder. During the heat, I only partially fill the feeder and refrigerate the remaining. If it is 90 or above, replace it daily. Make sure you rinse the feeder prior to refilling. Only clean feeder with a mild wash weekly and make sure it is rinsed thoroughly before filling again. Hope that helps?

@@annemurphy9339; They are talking about the water/ sugar mix. As for actual “food”, hummers can hunt for insects and find nectar on their own but, after a long, cold night, they can really use our help with sugar water to get their energy level up in order to search for food and then again in the evening to get them through the night. I remember having honeysuckle all over our neighborhood. Now, I don’t see it anywhere😪..I am going to our local nursery this week to buy a trumpet honeysuckle to do my part along with the 2 feeders I have and 2 water fountains..They are so fun to watch! … Robbie is a good teacher! I did it! I created a foundation and I JUST saw a hummingbird in it!! I didn't create the concrete ball, but used a terracotta pot turned upside down. You are right, they wanted something to grip into. His little feet gripped right onto the pot. I'm so pleased.

The first summer after I moved into my current house, I was surprised to see a hummingbird at an iris versicolor I had recently planted. Since then I've been putting in more plants to attract hummingbirds but did not see any until this summer. For the past month or so, we've been seeing a pair of hummingbirds enjoying a lonicera sempervirens, which we planted that first year, everyday, sometimes multiple times in a day. Here in New Jersey, we only have one species of hummingbird. We don't have much summer left, but I am going to make one of your hummingbird fountains this week.

Robbie, thank you so much for your fun and great ideas for all the hummingbirds.. the last couple months have been very trying for me. I made the decision when i found out my father was diagnosed with dementia to keep him home with me and quit my job to take care of him until he passes at our home that we built 30+ years ago. he has always sat on our front covered deck to watch the hummingbirds and Pileated woodpeckers mostly. loved the difference in size. Well i really wanted to set up a little bit more of a bird haven for him to watch the birds, but he is going faster than we always want and i am not going to have it completed before he dies, but i am still going to make it in his memory. i have had a birch tree die in front of my house that he wanted to cut down and i would not let him because the hummingbirds sit out on the tiniest branches and the pileated always comes and sits on the vary top ot the main tree. Please keep up your videos. My dad will be watching his birds from a different front porch soon but i will be here remembering ALL our good Times!

When I was needing some cement for my fence I went to Home Depot and by chance they were giving away bags of cement in all sorts of label, so I grab some I needed for my fence and left some for a company who takes all the free cement, I was just a few minutes ahead of them to take what I need 😂😊👩‍🌾 so I got my cement for my fence free! They have all the cement right at the door where you pick up ur orders. It was just timing, so if you need anything like woods and cement go to the loading duck and look around you will sometimes find free stuff! I did not have any of the meat trays Robbie was using in another video, so I was trying to figure out what containers I might be able to re-use. I have used the jugs as ends of sticks (their shape seems to resist flying off in the wind vs all sorts of smaller bottles), as pitchers, and as winter greenhouses, but I have way more gallon jugs than I can use.

I did put out a foam cooler hubby got free with his medicine shipment and filled it with cool water and keep it clean. Yes it does leak a tiny bit but stays pretty full for days. We recently had a week of 105-109 degree daytime temperatures here in our NW AZ Mohave Desert yard. Cooler today at only 103. Love this idea!

Working in retail.. Please do not leave an open bag of cement in cart. Most of those stores already have to deal with a bunch of torn bags that no one wants. Open concrete bags are a nuisance and are not viewed as a gift. I would suggest bring your bucket in, ask them if they have a torn a bag you may pay for and scoop from, there is always someone who will put it in your cart and car if you ask. They much rather help you put things in car than deal with an open concrete bag. OR bring/buy multiple buckets and take it ALL in smaller weights at the car as you suggested. At the very least let someone know you are doing this so they can dispose of it right away.

I have white rain barrels that algae grows in so quickly, so I need to darken them where light won’t get in, and be decorative too. I know that acrylic paints are an option, but I’m not an artist!
As much as I love hummingbirds, there are none of them where I live in Hawaii🙁. Do these cement balls attract other type of birds too? Those fountains are so pretty!

Robbie, I tried making one of the solar fountains in your videos, and my solar pump was constantly getting slimy from being submerged in water, even in a sunny location. Have you had that issue, and if so, how did you fix it?🤔

If I ask, the store has always had someone help me load things into my car. You may have to wait a couple of minutes, but they will take care of it.

I have started to use Sakrete Surface Bonding Cement. It is a fine ground concrete with fiber, no aggregate. Comes in White and Grey. I am making Basins now for the birds.

Where in the world are you finding those Jumbo Straws at such a low price? I'm also in Southern California, and can't seem to find them anywhere...

I found some at Dollar General and they cost 1.00 also. I have used them on 3 of my fountains, and I do have to cut a small piece and cut it so the straw fits, like she shows in the video.

I live in North Carolina about 50 miles from the coast. Unfortunately, hummingbird season and hurricane/bad weather season coincide with each other. I've put a bird bath out on the deck with a solar fountain, but it's been cloudy for several days. The bad weather that hits the center of the USA makes it's way to the east coast. My husband has a smallish power supply that he has connected to the pump, but solar isn't working for us during hummingbird season. I'm not speaking for the whole of the east coast, just my area.

I have a question. I live in south Texas and I have 8 feeders on my balcony. I usually have around 30 each evening around 8pm. I was cleaning and refilling my feeders every other day because they were eating so much. In the last week, the number of visitors has dropped significantly. I'm still keeping the feeders fresh and full. This happened last year maybe mid August. Any idea why they aren't coming? I have a fresh water source as well. It has been a pretty hot summer so far so not sure if that's why?

Home centers will be happy to load it in car or truck . When you get home, transfer to buckets for future products.

What a great design, a bird fountain ball! I will use this in my next water feature design. Does this work for larger birds? Thank You!

Can someone please tell me how often should the water be changed and is it okay to use well water from the tap? :) Thank you!

Change the water daily. Clean the bucket and only use potable water. If it's safe for you, it's safe for them. I hope this helps you enjoy your them even more❤

You know you could do the ball w/o using so much cement to fill inside. You could only mold the shape and it could be hollow inside. It would still work w/ less material and much lighter :)

If you don't want any rocks in the cement, you could use mortar mix.

Concrete is highly alkaline. I would suggest soaking and rinsing the balls for a while before using them for the birds.

I know you are giving as many ideas and options as possible, but does making the sphere with the ball and cement have any benefits over the easier project you posted with the styrofoam ball?
