DIY Hanging Bird Feeder Dollar Tree Wild Birds Love
EASY Cover for Hummingbird Feeder in Rain & Hot Sun Feeding Hummingbirds Feeding on DIY Nectar
I use old glass lids from frying pans., cheaper at the Thrift store here, and they always have them ( 12" +/- approx. ) I like them better than the plastic b/c of the wind and the birds can see through them. The wind just tosses them around and I loose all the nectar. The hole in the top from the handle fits perfectly for the wire at the top, and here we get a lot of rain and h/birds all year long (Western Canada) Thanks for all your great ideas ! 🙂
Oh I will definitely try this bc we get lots of wind also, TY for sharing!
How do you suspend the heavy glass lids? Don’t they have built-in glass knobs (no holes)?
The glass lid sits on top of the feeder cap. only buy the lids with the handle/knob are removable/screwed in. you can unscrew the handles on the glass lid and you are left with the hole. I will feed the feeder wire through the hole. Usually I will unscrew the cap on top of the feeder to cut the wire this way, assemble the lid and then re-tie the wire underneath the feeder cap. Hope this helps a bit more. I only use glass feeders so if you have plastic, I'm not sure how well that will work -
Hi all, I've used colorful umbrellas for years to cover my feeders. My feeders are set up in groups of 4. The umbrellas cover a wider expanse. And the hummers really do appreciate having protection from the sun, hawks and rain.
Smart. Creative. Simple. Effective. Impressed.
Agree! Wish I had a map with pins on it everywhere that ppl inspired by this channel have put up feeders, fountains, shade, and habitats! Is there a blog? I would so love that and if ppl could post pics and vids of their creations! I can't be the first to have thunk it, does that exist somewhere on the web? LOVE this channel!
Whenever I see Kitty in one of your older videos, I tear up. She was such a sweet heart! You must miss her terribly!
Hi Robbie 👋. Thank you for sharing your talents with me and protecting your humming birds 😊
So cool!!! Btw I pick up those metal banana hanging bowls at the thrift. They work perfect for hanging a feeder. I put large stones in the basket for stability. They are perfect for back yard walls!!!!🎉
I buy chip n dip bowels from the doller tree. with the sodering iron, I make two holes and use wire to hang them upside down. Hot glue the holes to stabilize them and keeps the water out.
Thank you for the great idea! Will be going this week.
I love this idea! Thanks so much for showing us these great money saving ways to make things for our gardens.
Great tips. I just started feeding hummers and can watch them for hours. You are the hummingbird diva! 😊
Omgoodness! I was watching one of your videos on solar fountain bird baths when the notification for this popped up. Your covers are perfect, and I love them. I don't need covers for my hummingbird feeders because they are covered by the outer edge of the roof on my porch and never get wet. They do morning sun for about an hour. I do need these for a couple of my platform feeders and I have all but the wire to make them. I am so happy that you are so creative and love sharing your ideas. Thank you! 😊 ❤😊❤
Love your creativity! I'm going to recycle items & make these. I'm going to continue using them over my suet as well!
Wonderful ❤️ thank you
Totally love❤ these covers Robbie! I have been wondering how the feeders can be covered. Kitty is so precious! I just lost my little angel who was also a Yorkie, over 15 yrs😢. Thanks for sharing !
Hello 👋 Robbie I have given three of those feeders. Putting them out tomorrow. Thank you 🙏 lady
This is a really good idea Robbie, you are so creative 🥰
Thank you so very, very much Robbie. Funny, I used a plastic cover that came with a store-bought cake and it wrinkled from the sun. Your rain & sun protector is BRILLIANT.
I was wriggling my toes from excitement while watching this I'm so eager to make this as soon as the sun came up.
I have wracked and wracked my brain trying to figure out how to keep the rain and sun out of the feeders. You came up with a perfect solution! Thank you so much for this! Hummingbirds can feed in a heavy deluge of rain, however, when they get soaked with the rain, it's very difficult for them to fly adequately. They have to use more energy than usual to fly. That means they're using up the energy the sugar water provides for them. I've seen them actually struggling to fly after they've been soaked thoroughly by the rain. So, this is a win-win for the birds! I can't thank you enough for this idea! It's also attractive to look at.
I just made one & I'm so happy with how it turned out & happy with myself 😊 thank you so much for sharing your cool idea!
Wonderful! Thank you ❤️❤️❤️
I love recycling....you have such great ideas! Thanks Robbie!
I live in the central coast of California. Yesterday there was warning for very strong winds. I found some of these green tags that the supermarket have to tie veggies and fruits. I grabbed them and went outside and secured each of the feeders to their perches. This way I could relax and don’t have to worry about rescuing a fallen feeder. Great idea for the feeder roofs 😍🥰
I love the one with the flag! Interchangeable! So awesome!
Thank you 😊
Very, very cool! I love your ideas & use them in the rainy PNW. Thanks bunches Robbie! ☔
Thank you Robbie I will be making these
OMG, I have had these metal grid things that were part of a shelving unit & I've tried tossing them out for years. Last month, I went & rescued them from the dump run because I just knew as soon as they were gone for good, then I'd find their new purpose.
Now I have a project. Thanks.
I am so touched how much love and care you give to these little angels. Thank you for inspiring us and showing us some hummingbird life hacks.
Hi Robbie!! Thank you again for another genius idea!!
I love everything you do. We only have a few hummingbirds in the Northeast but, we love them. Because of your videos I've been able to make birdbaths which my husband & I enjoy. One I made from a barrel lamp on legs & used a bowl & an aroma therapy thing turned upside down. I just took the electrical cord out & made a cover for it. The other one is an urn with a chip & dip plate in it. I never knew it was so easy to make just about anything into a birdbath. Thank you so much. I went to show my daughter your video & she said, That's Robbie! She has a birdbath in the very cold winter too.
Thank you for these wonderful covers for the hummingbird feeders. Can’t wait to make them for my hummingbirds.
Glad you like them! They like it here 😊 thanks ❤️
HI ROBBIE, YOU ARE A BLESSING TO US ALL. LOVE YOU ROBBIE. ❤ YOU ARE A JOY ALWAYS 😊 I PRAY MARK IS SAFE. 🙏 ❤
Thank you, Robbie, for some more great ideas!!
Perfect timing. Even though I did put 2 feeders out early (barely any food). I took them both down today due to pouring rain. Considering I know there are no hummingbirds currently, that is okay. However, soon, I will need to leave them out full time. Now, I will have time to make covers for the feeders prior to them showing up. THANK YOU for all your wonderful ideas.
It's pouring rain today in SW Florida. I knew you'd have ideas to protect the feeders. Thank you
Great idea for feeder covers. The pot lid idea from one of the ladies that commented is also a really good idea. Tfs Robbie. 🐦☀️❤
Hi I made umbrellas for my feeders about 25 years ago with plastic salad bowls and short turn buckles. The bowl was wide enough that when the ant crawled over the bowl they dropped to the ground.
After I moved last year I made new umbrellas out of frisbees and plastic measuring cups on top again with the turnbuckle. I actually started feeding hummingbird about 60 years ago. . If you Google "hummingbird music camp in New Mexico, I learn about hummingbird from the original owner of that property. That's why I would like to be able to contact you direct. I will be 83 years old this fall and have lived near the location of the music camp they wore time.?
Hope I haven't bored you .
I was watching the weather today and it said it was flooding there again. Thank God for sharing your thoughts and knowledge on how to protect the beautiful birds.
Yes, still raining, we had a break today for minutes here and there...finished this today in between the rain...Thank you!
You were the first comment 🙂
I took a squirrel baffler and spray painted the underside red. Works good for my hummingbird feeders.
Thank you so much for this video! I've been wracking my brain trying to figure out how to protect my hummingbirds from the rain. Now I can't wait to get started as we get a lot of drenching storms here.❤
good morning ìm Patricia ì would like to know if you could help me out with trying to attract humming birds ì just can't seem to get àny hummers no matter how hard I try maybe you can tell me what I'm doing wrong 😊❤❤
Thank you Robbie I have put hummingbird feeders out this year and we have customers!!!!! It’s so exciting I followed all your advice in preparing them this is rain cover such thoughtful idea too thank you hummingbird fairy!!!
Oh this is so perfect. Rain has been the biggest frustration in keeping my feeders fbormulated correctly bc here in Ga a summer shower could pop up at any time.
I keep everything. I have even cut off the d shaped hoops on old cat & dog collars once the collars are worn out. I have a few zip-tied to the middle section of my large shephard hook poles to hang extra hummingbird feeders on. So instead of only 2 feeders I can get at least 4.
Cool, Robbie!👍
What’s even easier is get a gold or silver plastic gold or silver platter either round or oval as the cover - use soldering iron to make holes , put zip tile thru center & hang 😊
Some DT stores sell that chain attached to the back wire planters, which can be covered with a piece of plastic, then hung upside down--and a feeder can then be hung from that.
That is true, I think the cheapest one I’ve seen is about six dollars but it will work yes 😊
@@RobbieAndGaryGardeningEasy Here in my area it's still $1.25 for the basket/hanger combo. They're always stacked up by the pots/planters.
Yes they’re at dollar tree😊
This is a good idea, I have a 5 gal bucket lid I could repurpose. I might spray paint it red too, to attract them.
Adorable thumbs up from Gary. 😊
I wish I had seen this video before we had our ice storm this past spring.
Great and Fantastic ideas. your always thinking out of the box Robbie. Hummingbirds no worries your Mama Robbie has you covered. ☔How are you and Gary and kitty doing with all this rain your getting there in Southern California?? We get alot of Rain here. And im going to use your creation. and make like 5 of these. You remind me of my Mom she always made things of what was laying around the house. she was a mrs fix it !! God Bless and you all keep safe and dry.🙏🌧🌂☔✌
You make the cutest things and all are useful🤍🕯️🤍
Yr 2 watching you and hummingbirding. Waiting in NTX for mine to come back.
thank you for sharing. I made a bubble wrap cover for the rain but never thought about using the cookie rack then the bubble wrap so will be heading to Dollar Tree in a few to make one like yours.
You are so creative and resourceful!!! 👏👏👏
💛 💛 💛 You're an angel! 😊 🌷
I'm making me one! Thank you for the idea!😀
Hey nice video I just made a cover for my hummingbird feeder I made it out of a bowl going to paint it red so it will keep the necatar cool in summer time
Love you projects.
Thank you
So many wonderful ideas!! You are amazing!!
Mine hang under the eve of the roof, so out of sun and rain. But I now can hang bird feeders for other birds out and about and "out of the rain". Thanks again for another great idea.
That’s so sweet of you!! Pure love for the birds!! 💕💕🙏
Looks nice, easy to make, and the birds love it ❤️ Thank You 😊
That's awesome thanks for sharing.. I'll be doing mine like this now 😉
I’m thinking a plastic plate, topped with a wine-bottle cork, with a cup hook screwed through the plate/into the cork from below, another hook screwed into the cork from the top. Should take all of about 20 seconds to make. Hang the shade using the top hook, the feeder from the bottom hook of course.
O have never seen hummers out in the rain!😄
Hello from Rancho Mirage California 🇺🇸

I'm thinking of running some scrapbooking papers through my laminator for covers. Thanks for all the ideas, Robbie!
What a wonderful idea. You have some wonderful, clever ideas. I can't wait to try this. Thanks for sharing.
Works great, thanks so much
You are brilliant, as usual! 😊
Smart gal!!!!!!
We use those $4 feeders from walmart also. Soooooo much easier to keep clean!
You are a genius! Now I'm a genius too love all your ideas

Thank you so much
I will start make some
Amazing you continue to adjust & improve your feeders! You have endless ideas!! Thanks for sharing 😊❤ 🐦 🐦⬛ 🦜
Oh wow, another great idea! Thanks Robbie!🙂👍
Thank you
I like that idea. I get to many ants for a hummingbird feeder
Very cool Robbie. I have been making my covers for my feeders out of dollartree bowls with a heavy gauge wire for hanging. If ants become a problem in the area of that feeder I add a small cup glued to the top to hold water to work as an ant trap. I don't have quite the nice setup you have that I would have enough room to use your clever idea here . Many of my feeders are hung from dollar tree shepherds hooks, and my bowls will hang fine from them. I do have a few areas out in the yard where I have more room however that I want to try your idea. You can really add a splash of color using your technique. Haha one thing I like about using my bowls is they kinda look like a bunch of jelly fish suspended out there on the deck. Too fun. Always love your ideas Robbie and your love for our little feathered friends.!
I LOVE the covers.
Thank you so much for all your cute ideas for the hummingbirds! I noticed your little doggy. I lost my little yorkie, Sophia in January. She was 13 years old and sick and I had to have her to put to sleep.💔I noticed your little one needs her hair brushed. Does she hate it like my little one did? I had to hold her down to trim her hair and brush her. She hated it! 😂
Pretty cool. I love it. ❤️
Thank you
Robbie your such a genius ❤️
I love the creativity! I wonder if fishing line would work.
You're so creative Robbie.
Love this! Thanks Robbie 🌷✨💙
This is awesome Robbie ❤
Thank you ☺️
This occurred to me: Purchase one of those {relatively inexpensive} _Mylar emergency space blankets._ The material {I think} would be shiny enough to reflect plenty of sunlight, and _one blanket_ would make _multiple covers._
LOVE YOUR IDEALS ❤
Es muy buena idea 💡!!! Tú eres muy creativa!!. Me encanta!!😊
We do love u for it.❤❤❤❤❤❤
So clever!!! ❤❤❤❤❤
Brilliant idea Robbie! Thank you :-)
FWIW: I purchased a whole {small} box of chain a while back for a project but only needed a short length of it. So I have plenty for a project like this.
A while back I was in a store and saw _brass binder clips_ for sale. I was tempted to purchase them but had no need for them. _UNTIL NOW._ 👍
*EDIT:* AFAIK, the _brass_ binder clips -- if they REALLY ARE BRASS -- _ should be more corrosion-resistant than steel ones.
Enjoy ya so much ! Such good information !
Very nice Robbie ✨👍🏾
Putting the center square zip ties or chain from corner to corner of that middle square would stabilize them from sliding around on the long sides of the square. Ah I see you did it on the last one.
Thank you for this
