The Best 6x8 Survival Tarp Shelter? (Plow Point)

  • While there are many tarp configurations out there, I believe the plow point is the best one for most circumstances where there might be inclement weather. Sheltered on all but one side, it leaves room for a fire in front when guyed out properly. For more information on classes and scheduling go to: waypointsurvival.com/

    I love how you use a simple Home Depot tarp that most people have access to in a crunch. It always seems people making tarp videos use high end Sporting good store, perfect square tarps. I like the method and your use of the windshield sun reflector as a cheap pad. You are using materials people can get at the Walmart cheaply unlike the other vid makers who use stuff average people don't have ready access to. Thank you.

      I do have the high end tarps as well, I just think that everyone should be able to enjoy the outdoors no matter what their economic status. Thank you for watching and commenting!

    Yes. The Plow Point is a great design. I set up a 6' X. 8' tarp to test during a recent windy rain storm. It set up in about two minutes, and kept me warm and dry. I was pleasantly surprised. For those without cam jam's, taught line hitches work well.

    This summer I've been learning about knots, cordage, and tarp shelter. However, I am on a tight budget and wanted to learn with a budget mesh tarp, such as the one used here. In particular, how to make a diamond-plow shelter with or without trees using a rectangular tarp. So thank you for fully illustrating it.

    I learned a different 3-point tarp configuration that gives you a floor and a door. You probably already know about but it's really very nifty!! The side can be opened up to create a nice overhang to sit under during the day. But it all seals up completely when needed.

    A good instruction video for this style of shelter.
    The plowpoint was the favorite of my Cub Scouts when we did the tarp shelter building class.
    That class was second only to the fire building class.

    James, I've watched this several times. Interestingly, using exactly the same configuration for a Diamond Shelter set-up & replacing the polytarp with a canvas painer's drop cloth ; using natural rope/cordage & a rustic pole, I've have set-up & camped at historic Pre-1840 Rendezvous events.

    • @WayPointSurvival
      @WayPointSurvival  5 місяців тому

      Absolutely! This is a classic configuration and pretty much the best way to get the most coverage out of a tarp whether it's square or rectangular.

      @@JugglesGrenades Excellent! Sounds like a great place to camp out. This tarp set up can of course be scaled up to whatever size you need. However, a square tarp is easier to set up in various configurations. I just used this size in the video because they are cheap and readily available and it is the kind I recommend for my Phase 1 classes.

    If you don’t have a tarp clip you can run a long from the base of the back stake along the ground staking it down flush with the ground folding the excess tarp under the line then using a stake at the corner grommet. This actually isn’t a bad idea to do anytime with a plow point as that fold over provides a good weather seal.
    A basic plow point should always be the beginning of your survival shelter, but the key to survival bits to always work towards improving your living conditions. Otherwise your just camping and not even in a simulated survival situation
