I was thinking if you put a mark on the tent the length of the pool if you have to fabricate one it would be real simple just a thought

That guy has destroyed the lightweight bivy/ tent manufacturers by a trekking pole and a tarp (oh and 3 pegs). That is a no nonse shelter. Well done and well presented. I can't wait trying this.

How much I agree with you, so much great camera work on UA-cam is ruined by the enthusiastic belief that the cameraman can do it all, shoot, direct, select the right music and edit etc, and only gets one of them right. When it's even less musical than a vanload of grand pianos falling down the stairs it does make one wonder what's going on in the head of a videographer surrounded by natural beauty, that they feel the compulsion to add pulsating clangerous noise. So another well done for excluding it.
By far the easiest and simplest explanation of how to use a tarp for shelter that I've come across. Great for someone totally inexperienced as I am. Thank you.

Great video, great channel and a GREAT set-up. If the skies ever open up and immediately downpour, you can actually construct this 3 sided pyramid very, very quickly and very easily, keeping you and all your gear dry by simply getting underneath it immediately and building it from the inside. You'd need a pre-cut pole/hiking pole of course, but if the tarp is easy to get at this takes ZERO time to set up (3 pegs and a pole), and then reinforce from the outside when better dressed and prepared. I used this set-up one 90kph+ winter afternoon/evening, and she held up great. I did have to make adjustments often (reaching from inside outwards to resecure pegs that would come loose). I also used #36 bankline to tie from the bottom of the 3 corner pegs to the top of the peak/pole to try to reduce the pole from leaning and shifting around. The winds were gusting a lot and seriously pushing hard, pushing the walls in for hours!, and that was moving the center pole. If I had not been awake the entire time I am not sure it would have stayed there without me tweeking it, and resecuring it whenever needed. It was a brutal night, but very, very awesome!! IT WORKS WELL! Next time out, I am going to set this same configuration up again and make 3 poles to run from ground to peak, and wrap in material (socks, hats, gloves - anything to protect from piercing the tarp), at the peak, so that I can be rid of that center pole altogether, and have 3 extremely strong sides/walls. Would be real easy to add tied/notched cross braces/ribs on each wall too for additional serious strength to the walls. It would really suck to wake up in the rain/snow watching your tarp blow away in high winds.
Maybe by putting 6 inches or so of paracord on the tie-down loops you could raise the tarp 4-5 inches off the ground providing ventilation for warmer weather. An adjustable trekking pole would be ideal for a center pole.

I have never tried the pyramid setup . Nice and quick and simple with plenty of possible functions . This gave me an idea for a hunting blind using an inexpensive camo poly tarp . I could pre cut roll down windows and add thin black mesh and skeeter netting . I would have a 360 degree vision and it would we light weight. guess what , I'm gonna do it . I could make a hunting blind for say maybe 20 bucks that would weigh 2lbs or less . Thanks for the video , good no nonsense information . Double thumbs up and a hand salute from a vet .
I especially like the fast set up. Often I am going until it is too late, and I find it getting dark or getting ready to rain. Putting me in a push come shove situation. That's why I like the fast set up, get me inside and dry quick.

To make it a little more bearable, instead of staking the two front corners together, spread the corners out about two feet and stake them seperately. You can take the top flap with a guy line to a stick then stake it out and have a little fire in front or it can be a make shift teepee with a solo stove and not have to worry about smoke inhalation or carbon monoxide poisoning. Great video. Btw to get your pole just right, measure it at home against your chest before you go out into the field. I'm 6'4" and it fits right at my xiphoid process. And i made a hole in a tennis ball and put the end of the pole in the hole. Great instructional video and God bless.

Thank you for the instruction. I got stranded in 2012xafter an eviction and problems at the Tacoma Rescue Mission with gang assaults and thefts. It was very harsh treatment that I got. I am in Reno now, and I've figured out how to get along better with neighbors, and I hear about these demonstrations that turn into riots. I was lucky to survive. I simply fought being assaulted for 7 years off and on, then took a bus out of town. I understood your video tonight, and am I have the tarp and pole but can use wood stakes in soft ground to just set up the shelter by a little lake for fun.

I like how you can flip the top up! A mosquito net over the whole thing would make ventilation work. As far as ground water, a ground tarp under the teepee with previously attached velcro put in the right places on the outside of the teepee and the ground tarp, could possible let you pull the bottom ground tarp up to the velcro sides of the teepee before you got into it. Of course this would all have to be done ahead of time to place everything correctly for the next use. As far as weight goes, another tarp would make your pack heavier so I would use a light weight plastic sheeting or a very light weight water proof nylon tarp.
I mean this is the smartest thing I've seen on the internet!

I like this tarp config.
I use a 4m X 3m so i can fold under and get half a groundsheet.
Plus if you use two walking poles as an A frame, you can lie directly center.

Seriously, this looks great, and I wish I had seen this video before that weekend as I would have tried it, but as most tarps, like mine, are rectangle, not square, how will that effect the design and ease of set up?

On the pole in center, a tennis ball cut with a slot to fit on top of pole will also work well to keep tarp from puncture or abrasion . Good explanation on your video.

Attempted my first pyramid shelter last weekend in the Brecon Beacons in Wales, after checking-out several other YT vids - wish I had seen this one as my pyramid was more of an abstract art piece! After i watched this i took my tarp, hiking pole, closed cell foam sleeping pad and a sleeping bag when hiking. Saved alot of weight and slept like a child. The trekking pole served as my center pole. Worked like a charm. Thank you for sharing this. I now feel like my tent is just bulk.

Best tarp setup I have seen. Fast setup, and probably pretty wind resistant which I intend to find out. You can even put your pack down and set the tarp up with it being inside when you're done setting it up.

That's downright clever.
A smaller tarp could be used as a floor. It wouldn't need to be very big, just enough to cover the triangle shape. Maybe just have 4 inches of extra tarp to lay against the sides on the inside to keep out water and bugs.

This is still the best idea I have seen. On the open position, I could still have a fire without a guideline rope in the way. Will use this for my next night camp with the horses.

Ive used this shelter in 20 degree weather. It was probably 60 in there. All my buddies froze thier butts off in their tents while i was toasty.

I like it, simple and very secure. Probably the best protection available from a simple tarp. Also looks like with separating the two joined corners you could adjust heat retention as needed for different weather conditions. Love it!

I always use this and I've used it in the rain and cold wintery winds. Keeps the elements out and keeps you warm and there lots of space in there for your gear. It's defo something il be using in the future if needed. Always look after your tarps guys

This was an awesome video! As a new "tarp-tenter", I've been looking at every video in the world, to find one easy enough, yet effective enough, for me to make. This video was not only the best answer to my question, but I can see this as a first time tarp structure for anyone who wants to begin using tarps to construct their sleeping quarters. Best Fastpitch protection I've ever seen!! Using an adjustable hiking pole to set the peak would be ideal. For ventilation add rope to a corner and steak it further out would create more airflow. How Excellent! Thank you

Fantastic! I always wondered how to set up a 10x10 in this fashion. I had a thought, for those who would be concerned about a center pole taking up valuable floor space, find and cut to length 2 sticks, and stick the ends in the included bag and cinch up the draw cord, making a bipod to support the peak of the tent
I am physicaly not able to go back packing any more but I can use this method to demonstrate to the young men in our church group thank you

Great informative video. What I like about this type of shelter is the way the door is very secure and it's very simple to build. Like all tarp shelters there always are drawbacks to each method. If I'm going sleeping on the ground, I prefer to have a floor, but if I'm using a hammock, I don't need a floor but I have to be able to run the hammock straps out each end of the shelter. Like you say, this shelter is best for colder weather, and there are ways of keeping the ground dry even without a floor.
