  • Part 5 of the shipwreck hunter series. Filmed on 1/1/21 (Pre lockdown)
    In this one we head up to Fowey and dive a recently found site which could be the final resting place of the East India Company ship Albermarle, which was lost in a storm somewhere in this area on the 11th December 1708.
    Albermarle carried a very rich cargo, so would be well worth finding, and has been looked for in the past by many different groups.. with little success it would seem... until now.
    All items raised in this video were legally salvaged, and have been reported to the Maritime and Coastguard Agencys "Receiver of wreck" as per UK maritime salvage law.
    Conservation advice is now being sought, and the items remain in a fresh water tank to de salinate and stabilise the items for future generations to enjoy and study.

    Enjoyed that one, thanks. Very jealous of the viability. Got very excited many years ago when we found cannons at the entrance to the Fowey opposite Polruan. Turned out they were lost from the Wreck ' Mary of Milford ' en route to the smelting furnaces of Wales as scrap. Stay safe . 👍

      Cheers, I think there are still some cannon on the quay in Fowey that were recovered from the Mary. Can’t see any other cannon still down there although there is some patches of crud there which marks the site. Might even be a few bits there buried up still. 🙂

    Great videos, enjoy the channel. I think I saw you at polurrian the other day. Anything interesting around mullion that will feature in any future vids?

      @BenoCam  3 роки тому +1

      Ha yeah that was us. Polurrian is quite a walk there’s not many that are up for it with dive kit ! If you look back through the videos, episode 1, the boyne was filmed by swimming north of that beach, and episode 4 has a part filmed down there too. There’s alsorts around mullion it’s an interesting place, back in the days of sailing ships many vessels were caught out by taking shelter in mounts bay during north and east winds. If the winds suddenly swung about to the south (which sometimes they do very quickly ) the sailing ships would become trapped in mounts bay and unable to sail clear. If there was any west wind in it also they would often get driven ashore between Porthleven and lizard point. There’s still a few along that side that have never been located.

      Cheers Ross. I still have everything in storage , hoping to open a museum sometime. I have lent various artefacts to local museums who have done displays on local stories mostly ww1 items.

    As a diver I was just wondering how do you go about salvage right as it’s only small peace of the wreck sit?

    • @BenoCam
      @BenoCam  3 роки тому

      You mean like exclusive salvage rights? Doubt you would get it. Historic England don’t like you digging wrecks up any more. We are allowed to look and gently hand waft sand away but not excavate. Also you need a license to recover anything heavier than 100kg. I have reported the site to colleges I have worked with in the past at the relevant groups. They may wish to come and take a look. In which case the site may get designated a protected site, but it’s unlikely.

    Do you need permission to bring up old shipwreck artefacts? As i thought they would be protected just curious

    • @BenoCam
      @BenoCam  3 роки тому +1

      Sometimes, depends on the site. Some wreck sites are designated as protected so they mustn’t be disturbed. Others such as this one are unknown, and often the only way to learn about them is by raising items to help with identification. Also items heavier than 100kg you need a license now from the MMO to be able to recover these large Shipwreck artefacts.
      This small cannon is unusual as it only weighs approximately 40kg, so I just carried it up with me.
