  • Episode 4 of our ongoing series.
    In this episode we look at some of the old sailing ship wrecks along the west side of the Lizard peninsula in Mounts Bay.
    The wreck of the President is dived first which sank in 1684, then the site of the Santo Christo de Castello (Mullion pin wreck ) of 1667 and then finally looking at our unknown Portugese cannon site which has produced some interesting coins of the date 1590-1620 and may very well be one of the oldest wrecks located along the Cornish coast.
    It is worth pointing out that the wreck of the President is protected and can only be dived with those who have a license to do so, and no items have ever been lifted from this site by us.
    Those items that have been recovered have all been reported to the Maritime and Coastguard agencys "Receiver of Wreck" as per UK maritime law, and we work closely with Historic England on monitoring and reports these old sites.

    Just found your site and subscribed. Many thanks for another interesting video. In the 70's we always dived the Lizard but always on the east side as the weather and swell always seemed to be against us to get in on the west coast. Used to know two local lads, Messrs Hall and Simpson from Ruan Minor who were a a real font of knowledge for local marks. Keep them coming. P.S. still diving at nearly 70. Stay safe.

      Ha cheers. Yeah west side of lizard takes a while to calm down. We keep an eye on it and do it while we can. We are still in contact with Mike Hall who still lives down that way and has lots of interesting stories. Glad to hear your still diving! Ben

    Hi Ben loving the videos how do you clean the coins up, I've visited a fair few mines, sea caves etc but know all I want to do is dive with a detector. Keep up the great videos

    • @BenoCam
      @BenoCam  2 роки тому

      Silver coins put them in silver foil and a teasoon of bicarb then pour hot water in on them and when it cools rub the coins with the foil. Takes ages but they do clean up.
      Dive detecting can be really good but it’s all about finding the right spot. Plenty of fishing weights anywhere casting distance off any rock you can fish from around the coast, which are always a pain to us.

    Is that your gopro recording the sound from your Kirby or have you got it connected to a recorder? Great little cannon! Good job.

      Hiya I have tried all sorts, from go pros to hidden waterproof voice recorders stuffed in the hat etc , but the best way is to have a wire to the surface and have a coms box on the boat or shore and use the hats marsh marine. I have been using it as a scuba set up still but just with a coms wire I can disconnect once I have the audio I want .

    • @rayhsetwo8594
      @rayhsetwo8594 3 роки тому

      @@BenoCam Ah I see, so you were hard wired during those commentaries, I could see you have been using as scuba rig but didn't see the wire to surface, I'll look again, I got a few hats but find on scuba they are a bit of a gas guzzler compared to normal scuba rig, they shouldn't be given they're a second stage in a hard housing regulating air but in practice I've found they do, not much but enough if you go deeper with it, shallow doesn't really matter. That was a cracking little brass cannon, loved that. Did you identify the wreck afterwards?

    • @BenoCam
      @BenoCam  3 роки тому

      I only use the bandmask purely for making the videos it’s a bit too much of a faff to use for searching and normal dives. Also most of these sites I like to snorkel too to save air !
      The small brass cannon came from what is know as the mullion pin wreck . Larn and Mcbride worked it extensively in the 1970s/80s and used explosives to free up the concretion. Many of the cannon are now in several bits due to this and all we are doing is looking through what they left behind or missed. They also recovered a near identical small bronze gun, I have a picture of it from the auction catalog but I don’t know where it ended up .
      There’s a few more sites I’m hoping to record if we ever get the weather window this season ... one of which has never been rummaged and has a great story if it turns out to be what I think it is .... 🙂
