- In bestowing Ken Burns with its 2024 Liberty Medal, the National Constitution Center called him “America’s history teacher,” and he spoke to Ali Velshi about the “echoes” and “rhymes” between the current political moment and other periods in America’s history. “We’re dealt a certain hand of cards right now which we have to respond to,” he says. Burns also remarks on how the Republican Party has “morphed” into an “incredibly dangerous” group that needs to be reformed. “It’s going to be difficult for the Republican Party to figure out a way to escape the specific gravity of the darkness that engulfs it.”

Yes it was a fascinating conversation. Velshi did well in letting Mr. Burns explore the ideas. I also think that bringing up the 1850's demise of the Whig Party and the potentials of the R Party disappearing because of MAGA, and a new coalition formed from former R 'normies' and elements of the American electorate who are not entirely comfortable w/ the corporatist D party.

I have The War and The Civil War and have caught one or two of his The National Parks, but just googled him and was surprised at how much he's done.
This man is a phenomenal asset to the future of our country and world. I know it said often, but those who do not learn from history are doomed to make the same mistakes. I will forever remember two things about Ken Burns, an amazing historian and poetic writer.
His speech when he said "The presumptive Republican nominee is the opioid of all opioids, an easy cure for what some believe is the solution to our myriad pains and problems." Trump is the opiate of all opiates. A country addiction to opiates will end in destruction.
I also remember him sitting in another photo at the Bohemian Grove, with Clarence Thomas and David Koch. The photo was taken at the same event as the now famous photograph, or painting, with Thomas Clarence and Harland Crow.

I think Ken's documentary, _The U S and the Holocaust_ was just as detailed and impactful on the lack of true and unbiased education in America.
I am extremely proud to be one of the descendants of Amos Parker (1761-1842), the "tallest man in the revolutionary army," where it is written that Amos saved Gen. Lafayette's life. I do hope your new docu-series mentions him in some way. I would be so very grateful.

Gosh you know I've been listening to Ken Burns and have watched his documentaries and this man is extraordinary. Learned so much more by Mr. Burns.
I’m listening now to details of HUAC. Lived through it in the 50/60s. Concerned about redux. Throughout public school we had nuclear bomb drills - as if crouching in the hallway with our arms covering our head/neck would protect any of us from a nuclear bomb. We lived at ground zero - between NYC and Groton Sub Base.
Don't forget to listen to the beginning of those types of "hearings" - the "Army - McCarthy hearings", April - June, 1954...

I hope that Mr. Burns will not ignore that Charles Darwin's grandfathers Erasmus Darwin and Josiah Wedgwood were strong friends and supporters of Benjamin Franklin, and in turn his revolution.
The comment that all of our founders had "feet of clay" in certain regards is also true of the founders of the Republican Party. While abolitionists were a significant number, a majority of the founders were anti-States Rights when it came to leaving the spread of slavery up to newly formed States north of the Mason - Dixon line. My ancestors were "under the oaks" at Jackson, Michigan in July, 1854 and the platform that was adopted did not call for the abolition of slavery but merely the spread. And unlike the meeting that took place on March 20, 1854, there is an excellent historical record that was created by local newspaper editor Charles V. DeLand that is included in his History of Jackson County, Michigan. Lincoln didn't have the political capital for emancipation until after the Battle of Antietam and then only as a matter of military necessity in the States still in rebellion.
What is striking about DeLand's account is the knowledge our ancestors had regarding both past and present political decisions. Of particular note is their knowledge of the Northwest Ordinance of 1787 that prohibited the expansion of slavery in the territories two years before the constitution was ratified.
Love the AWI period. Looking forward to his doco. I think Bryson called it "an age drowning in myths" so will be interesting to see how he deals with some of the more famous ones.

I get it, we should be moving forward, always towards a more perfect union. But sometimes, when I read a book, I fall asleep, and have to go back and reread somethings, until I find my spot. I understand also, that people will always tend to reminisce about the better times in their life. To all my older people friends; You can't recreate yourself as you were at 24 years old. Or 7 years old. Or whatever age you were at the best time in your memory. Also, memories can be selective. According to what I've read, they are actually only talking about physically counting the number of ballots received. Not in manually tallying the choices on those ballots. Tallying the vote will still be processed in the usual way - machine counting.

Please don't dismiss the possibility of the "Direct Popular Vote" and the end of the Electoral college. The League of Women Voters, a non-partisan organization, has been advocating for this since the 1970s. The more it is mentioned, discussed, featured, the more likely that it can seen as possible. It is very pessimistic to dismiss this as not being remotely possible. We must imagine what is possible.

Education is key to democracy working. So I’m hoping this probable Harris win will prioritize public education and make university free for everyone. Put someone really brilliant in charge of restructuring it. Republican party exposes (and literally demonstrates in Congress)the dire societal results of NOT doing so.
Not all Republicans fall under the same banner, as is evident in today's U.S. politics. Maybe this is part of the problem in western politics today. People are feeling like they have to pick one side across the board. I believe that is a mistake. If one party gets elected then why should a member of another party be dismissed from being given a position in the winning party's government if they are qualified to run a specific position. That would tear down the unilateral power of government and show that two parties can work together for a non partisan, but social common benefit.
