21:50 What's Anne Applebaum is tragically missing is that, at least in the US, it's not we the people who control our government via elections or public speech. It's rather the very rich who buy our politicians and justices (scotus) via campaign contributions and sometimes outright giving valuable perks. All done in line with the law, of course, which was decided by earlier justices and congress.
Would it be different if the people's voice was what dictated policy (after certain basic rights are established)? If you go by polls done to determine policy preferences, we the people prefer public policies that are quire different than those in law.

This is exactly what Robert Baern, a former CIA agent, says in his books. After 20 years spent in the Middle East, he decided to tell everything.
Politics is influenced by capitalists, oil lobbies and so on, but this problem is everywhere. There is no truly honest country.
This agent lived the years of Saddam Hussein; Bill Clinton and Bush were not elected by the people, American citizens were influenced by the propaganda created by the CIA itself for national interests pushing citizens to vote for it. Robert Baern left the CIA because he found himself deceived by the system in a redundant cycle of corruption. This is however a problem in many countries, where interests outweigh rights.

I don't actually accept that - because if that was true - then the country would already be gone and you wouldn't have the dozens of heroes in congress now fighting to keep this nation and nations around the world from falling into autocracy.
I'm not saying campaign contributions aren't a problem. I am saying it does not condemn the entirely of our goverment and our leadership. Plenty of the 'good' guys are rich as hell. There was a billionarie and self-funded politico on the stage at the DNC. The governor of Colorado , who is an immensely popular democrat ( and I would also argue effective ) , used to be an investment banker. Tom Steyer gives hundreds of millions to environmental causes. Jamie Dimon from JPMorgan has lead an to put banks in disadvantaged communities, and has had success at elevating those areas economically by supplying capital to local businesses which is normally not available to them.
In fact there are a lot more rich-good guys than bad ones. it's a populist trap to suggest otherwise.

The discussion in itself is very interesting. I don't think that the Prof. A Applebaum advocates that USA/WEST is immune against seriously undemocratic failures. In fact, I'd say we've been warned against becoming complacent and sleepwalking into oligarchs dictatorship. I'd say we're already living it.

The failure of democracy at the moment is not because of oligarchs or autocratic regimes. Its legitimacy is because the leaders of the democratic west especially US acted like a dictator in international affairs! Rule based international orders was abandoned repeatedly by US. These included Unilateral military intervention, subversion which led to regime change (in Ukraine , Pakistan, Chile, Egypt etc etc) and unilateral sanctions against adversaries in clear violation international norms by US are examples! How can US which behaves like dictator in international affairs preach democracy to the world!!!
Democracy is probably a better system overall , but democracy is a spectrum and each nation should be allowed to evolve on their own , in their own terms and allow rooms for them to exercise their right to self determination , without interference from US and the West!

She does not acknowledge the existence of imperialism by states she prefers to term simply as "democracies" rather than "western powers". She does not acknowledge the influence and power of US oligarchs and other factors that make questionable the notion of the US being a democracy. Pipelines from Eurasia to Europe for her were "political", so what are regular US wars launched into oil-owning nation-states? She talks of use of money laundering by dictators (so true), so what about the comparable use of tax havens by US companies? She talks of Chinese use of surveillance technology, yet says nothing of the US NSA and Five Eyes use of the same. She talks of autocracy networks and behaviours and does not mention the existence of the same in "the democratic world" (her preferred term). She talks of political systems she prefers as a model others should adopt, failing to note that national polities differ for deeply different historical reasons. She talks of "we" and them. She laughably talks of election interference, not acknowledging that world leadership in that area is held by the US, especially its historical preference for coups and assassinations. Yes, there are truths in some of her statements, but overall she is a propagandist either intentionally or without knowledge and so innocently.

You do not seek out and obey your god and instead obey the whims of your heart. The us is a democracy and its super violent btw. All the land was slaughtered and taken. In a true moral democracy all intelligent agents would have a vote. The Africans out number everyone else. We would be taking care of Africa. White people would lose all their privileges. Farming would count more than other activities. The biggest issue to me though is that minorities would probably lose rights under a real democracy. Tyranny of the majority as it were. So i dunno. Well i dont think democracy ever really dies but there is some sort of cycle. The last cycle of kings was basically 1500 - 1900 wherein the world was a series of empires all of which fell except the British monarchy. You could say that the British won that series of imperial power struggles by devolving power. When i was in uganda the local king of the tribe was killed off so you can see how dictators often slaughter each other and that indirectly promotes democracy. The UN is not democratic. It was set up by the rockefellers and you cant help but wonder whether they secretly behind the scenes control it. Theres a lot of smoke and mirrors and the people often support non democratic authorities like the police.

I think it was M. Gorbachev who asserted: America has a dangerous "winner" mentality.
I have great respect for A. Applebaum. She is clearly fiercely intelligent, and I admire her ability to express herself with clarity and concision without resort to jargon or abstract technicalities. Nevertheless, I would like to try to highlight an important contradiction in her explanation.
She rightly explains that in the nature of politics there is no inevitability. She emphasises that it is neither inevitable that dictatorship will win nor democracy. However, her use of the word "win" suggests that there can be, in fact, winners or losers in the infinity game of politics, where the ultimate goal is to play rather than to be declared "the winner."

No mention of China's genocide and culturel genocide in Tibet. No mention of the israeli genocide in Gaza. No mention of the dictator Netanyahu. No mention of US lies to wage wars in the Middle East/Iraq. No mention og US terrror and spying on it's allies, which is a kind of dictatorship. What a waste of paper and my money.

NATO, led by the United States, is waging a proxy war against nuclear-armed Russia over Ukraine, which matters far more to Moscow than to the West. The conflict was tragically unnecessary, the result of Russian aggression, but only after Washington had endured three decades of arrogant determination to treat Moscow as a defeated power and expand the transatlantic alliance to Russia's borders. Despite repeated warnings from Moscow, successive administrations challenged its security interests in ways the United States would never accept at its border. The Biden administration's refusal to negotiate on NATO expansion in early 2022 was the final shot at war.

Ms Applebaum did not mention the elephant in the room, that those autocracies are only able to act with impunity due to the U N being disabled by a purported exercise by Russia of a claimed permanent membership.
    - Is she aware that *_that membership ceased to exist in 1991_* when the USSR ceased to exist (as per 1947 UN ruling, affirmed 1962, applied in 1992)? And that the U N is in breach of it's own Charter by allowing a non-member to vote?
    - Is she aware that this breach can be cured by a *_simple majority of General Assembly votes_* (Article 18(3) *_(not of members:_* abstentions aren't counted ( GA Rule 126)) to acknowledge the truth and expel R's representatives?
    - Is she aware that that matter is *_outside the jurisdiction of the U N S C_* (which is limited by Articles 4-6 and 24 of the Charter) - Permanent Members' votes are not even required?
Please let me know. I am happy to provide full details and evidence if she is not aware of this.

*Here’s the resolution to reclaim the UN (self explanatory):*
*_Recalling_* the principles of the Charter of the United Nations,
*_Considering_* that compliance with the Charter of the United Nations is essential both for the protection of the Charter and for the cause that the United Nations must serve under the Charter,
*_Recognising_* that "the USSR as a subject of international law and a geopolitical reality no longer exists", as acknowledged and declared by Russia on 8 December 1991, in the Belavezha Accord (confirmed on 21 December 1991 in the Alma Ata Declaration), and accordingly the USSR memberships of the United Nations and all organisations related to it, have lapsed and no longer exist _[1947 6th Committee determination]._
*_Recognising_* that states cannot continue memberships of other states that have ceased to exist _[A/RES/47/1, SC/RES/777, 1992],_ and accordingly the entire foundation of Russia's claim of membership (namely a letter, dated 24 December 1991, from Boris Yeltsin, president of a country which was not even a member of the UN), is without any legal authority, meaningless and of no effect,
*_Recognising_* that Russia is not and has never been a member of the United Nations, and it's presence is a violation of the United Nations Charter _[Articles 4, 23],_
*_Decides_* to expel forthwith the representatives of Russia from the place which they unlawfully occupy at the United Nations and in all the organisations related to it.” _[A/RES/2758, passed by 59% UNGA vote, 1971]_

When Anne speaks of the US founding fathers and the US electoral college system, I just can't get my head around how the electoral college voting system was ever tolerated. The electoral college count often goes heavily against, or in the opposite direction to the real popular votes for the President. Why would there have ever have been an electoral system that perverts and corrupts the election count results, if 82 million people vote for nominee one, and 76 million voted for nominee two, if loser nominee actually two faired better in just a small handful of preset priority states, then that loser wins the Presidential election, never mind that their nominee lost the actual election by 6 or 7 million votes, we the people in reality have no real say in who actually becomes President. Sounds like a corrupt electoral system that has always been open to abuse. Yet we see still see the US as the lighthouse, or shining light of the world's democracies. I never will understand why the electoral college system hadn't been scrapped, the US constitution has been modified before, times change.

The whole discussion is framed wrong. We need to start from the position that all political systems are there at the current state of development due to historico-cultural factors. They are all legitimate. In fact it does not even make sense to talk about legitimacy. Rather, this is, what is and it is for a reason.Where there is opposition to the regime (BTW they are all regimes) it is also due to historico-cultural factors. Yes, democracy is the most successful outcome. However, democracy comes in, in a spectrum of types and styles and that applies to all states on this planet. Our job is to learn, to understand, to cooperate and trade. All this, we the good, they the bad, black and white, does not work. Try gray.

No democracy is truly secure because humans, like all animals, are inherently driven by self-preservation. At the heart of this instinct is the belief that 'without me (my own existence), the world as I know it ceases to exist.' This fundamental egoism often impels individuals to prioritise personal interests over the collective good, posing a persistent threat to the stability and integrity of democratic institutions.
This tension arises from the fact that we live in a conditional, dualistic universe, where my dreams and aspirations for democracy-and the well-being of others-are inseparably linked to my own survival. The delicate balance between individual self-interest and collective progress is influenced by both (internal) innate instincts and (external) environmental factors.
These forces are further intertwined with social concepts of fairness and equality, deeply rooted in our sense of self-worth and ego. Human instincts seldom drive us toward rational, logical behaviour. Yet, in the 21st century, many people have learned to navigate these challenges through the principles of 'give and take' and 'rights and responsibilities,' fostering fairness and equality through compromise and mutual benefit.

I believe humanity is dumbing down in that the shallow depth politicians have to go to steer democracy and have us perceive the things we hold dear are threatened in the guise of monsters or beguiling us with the equivalent of shinny beads and axe heads. Democracy has been railroaded.

Let me know where did non dualistic thinkers ruled and lead the population to nirvana? Like which historical periode in Japan? When was the ruller so enlightened that no selfintrest existed?
As soon as they leave their meditation cushion, they live in duality. We have to make *this* world fair by rules that make it fair. There are people who are more selfish than others, more controlling and down right criminal. They will not disapear. No matter how much you meditate.
We have to inforce the laws we create so they are meaningful. We have to protect fairness, so decent people can live and be safe from exploitation. People can work and be paid a fair wage.
It is dangerous to create a docile system and disempower people when there always will be opressors and advantage takers. If you make people docile, you endanger them and their families.
