I like how you use the door for leverage. You work smarter not harder. Sucks that you weren't able to grab any fish but I'm sure you'll be back out there soon. Great tutorial Jeremy!
You do make it look super easy, funny how way back when you were worried about them car racks 😊😊😊😊the girls yelled hey its UNCLE Jeremy!!!! keep them videos coming!!!!!!!
@@DoubleBogeyBass hopefully you have a truck or trailer. I was looking at 12ft kayaks, and I was like no way. Too heavy, where and I going to put it. Heck I could barely lift them.
It always seems darn windy there. That is an impressive transportation technique. I would imagine part of the appeal of a kayak is never worrying about gassing it up, and being all about low impact, but if you are driving it around in a gas guzzler truck it defeats the purpose. This reminded me of being a teenager, and driving my buddies and I to a local parking lotto play hockey with nets on top of a two door Toyota Tercel with no straps, just our hands out the window holding them on.
It is almost always windy on the Delta. In fact they call it the Delta breeze here. To be honest my little car doesn't get great gas mileage with that big kayak on top, but it beats fueling up a boat 😂. I can totally see you doing that with nets, whatever it takes right? 😄
Thanks for the info Jeremy. Watched many of your vids. Much appreciated. I’m currently researching the pdl 120 and will have to car top it. This was helpful to see it can be done. I have a tarpon 120 now I car top but am going to upgrade to a pedal system yak. Good encouragement. Thanks again
Whatever it takes to get on the water! I will say that I have purchased a trailer (but can't use it every time) but when I do man is it soooooo much easier!! 🤣😂
Great how to vid Jeremy. You explain things very well ... I watched the whole thing even tho I don't car top😂 It has been pretty steady with the wind lately but this week looks a little better. Good luck the next time.
Thanks Keith! This was actually filmed awhile back, I've just been hanging on to it. I haven't been out fishing in a few weeks now. Hopefully I will get a chance this weekend though.
To be completely honest I’m not sure because the paint was already flaking and scratched before I ever used this roof top rack, however they are just suction cups, so they won’t scratch the paint, and I haven’t really noticed any denting in the roof, so if I had to guess I would say that you’re probably safe, just would overload the weight of what you put on there.
I don't trust those straps but i dont have a roof rails either. With the rails it looks good, only thing i'd add is tying the excess strap around the tightened strap under the buckle so its can't get pulled back out the buckle and the kayak goes flying away. I'm using ratchet straps going through the car and thick foam pads to take the pressure. Probably still puts a bit of pressure on the kayak but depends how much i ratchet it down. I used to do it until the kayak was almost touching the car but then i learned it could be too much so now i just get it snug then one more click on the ratchet😅 so far no problems going 75 on the freeway😅 I'll go your method once i get a roof rail system
I have full confidence in these straps. I have taken it on numerous trips, and several over 2 hours long, at speeds of up to 70/75 mph and have not had any issues with them coming loose. It would take a pretty massive failure for the kayak to come off my car. I have 5 straps holding it in place, including one through the car, so even if it did come loose I would have time to pull over and fix.
Quick question. I have the same Malone bars on top. Do you have a pool noodle or something on them to keep the kayak from sliding around? Currently I use those bars along with Malone J Bars. But one day I may get a heavier kayak and I may need to do what you did here and I feel the kayak would slide around without something like a pool noodle on the bars.
The rack that I bought came with padding on the rails, and it doesn’t slid around much at all. I know you can buy the pads separately and they say Malone on them.
So you just put it right on the roof rack? No kayak support brackets or foam? I've always had a truck and recently sold it. Now I'm going to get a roof rack for my sedan so I'm doing some research.
@@buckets_of_lead Man to be honest I was a little hesitant at first about using a rack with suction cups to transport this expensive kayak, but I have not had any issues with it. I'm pretty confident in it, but I will be getting a truck at some point and I have a trailer that I will be using to haul it. It will just be easier than car topping. 😁
do you truly wholeheartedly recommend the suction cup malone for heavy kayak. i’m asking because i have a bare roof on my chevy equinox and need a rack. the suction thing makes me nervous
I was nervous and skeptical myself at first. I did a few shorter trips to see how it would react and I can honestly say I’ve never had an issue with it. I’ve taken it as far as 3 hours away at highway speeds with no problem. I will suggest to make sure it makes a good suction on the roof before tightening down the straps. And I always have a bow and stern line as well as three straps on the center of the kayak.
Im looking into buying my first kayak and i was looking at that sportsman and the big fish 108 but was skeptical due to size and that i own a car. Do you know if the paded style works well? I dont have any tracks so that was my cheaper option
I'll never understand the attitude among kayakers that you shouldn't use ratcheting straps. Yes, they will damage the kayak if you over tighten them. Solution? Use them properly! Those tie downs you are using can slip easily, and you didn't even tie off the slack. Ratcheting tie downs don't slip. Also that rear tie down is clearly rubbing on your kayak, as evidenced by the black being worn down to orange on that side. This is more of a "don't do it like this" video.
@@Elephant_Butte_Lake Do you own an Old Town? I own 2, and my wife's 106 has never been on top of my car and it looks exactly the same, in the exact location. If UA-cam would let me add a picture I would. Even if it has rubbed off the color, what would that matter? It's not doing anything to the structure of the kayak.
You make it look so easy 💪
Tell that to my back 🤣😂
probably the most sensible tie down video I've seen; well done for thinking about safety and using the extra strap
