Great review video! You really put in the valuable work to make the video visually pleasing, engaging, and very informative. Your format is rock solid! So good it should be used as a template for all other kayak reviews on YT. Great work!
Thank you so much Michael! I really appreciate it! I may have to use this comment and tag Old Town on my Instagram page, because I can't even get them to give me a like anytime I tag them 🤣😂
I am new to the idea of kayaking & fishing too. What makes me different I am 68 years old and doing research on both fishing and kayaking. You did a wonderful job of showing how stable this kayak in the pool test. Best video I have seen on any kayak
Thank you so much Chuck! I appreciate it! It has been a really fun year for me learning how to fish from a kayak, I did a lot of research myself before deciding on going with the Old Town and I haven’t been disappointed! I hope you find something just as great that suites your needs and I’m sure you will have just as much fun fishing from it as I have.
I’ve been a canoe guy for many years but now that son has grown up and moved on I started looking at kayaks. I had no idea where to start. Your videos are excellent and have a wealth of information. Thank you!
I've been looking at this one for a few months now and you've sold me on it. I'm 70 and not as steady as I was when younger so my main concern was the stability but watching you struggle to tip it over settled that issue for me. I've checked it out at Scheels and I'm going to go back and put in an order. Thanks for the great video and when Old Town asks me for feedback I'm going to tell them it was because of this video.
Thank you so much for the kind words! I am pretty positive you won't be disappointed with the purchase! I love mine! Let me know if you have any other questions, I'd be glad to help if I can!
I would not mind driving that whip you have if I could come to a nice pool like the one you have. Great work editing on the Pros & Cons. Being able to maneuver yourself on that kayak as you did should be a number one reason to get any kayak the rest is for taste. Thanks for the great upload.
I have the paddle powered Sportsman 106 and I love it, but watching these videos about the pedal powered 106 makes this kayak very tempting to me ...very tempting.
The instant reverse while fighting a fish is awesome. I’ve tried fishing and paddling at the same time and I’d have to say it can be challenging at times 😂.
Thanks for that in-depth review. I was super lucky to win a new pdl120 last night at the YAK-A-bass team year end awards and this video helped me create a list of things i need to complete the setup
Now I know this too , I love your video with the flip and lift the dog in the Kayak , I'm thinking to get this Kayak and have fun .Now I have to watch your other videos , thanks .
Great video. Came across your vids when I was looking at the PDL 120 and 106. Ended up with 106 and love it, but this 120 review is one of the best I have seen yet. May get that one next. Your vids keep getting better, keep it up. Looks like we fish a lot of the same locations as well, just caught a salmon at that pirate ship today. PM me if you ever need a fishing partner, safer on delta with teams.
Thank you so much for the kind words! If you ever decide to upgrade to the 120, and are planning to sell the 106, let me know. We may be interested in getting another one for the kid! I’d totally be down for fishing with you sometime, we’ll have to work something out!
Absolutely loved the walk through on the kayak. Great video my friend. Looking to buy a kayak and this one you have is worth it. Left a like and subscribed. Adrian
Terrific video. I had mine delivered a month ago (upgrade). Been out in both tidal & non-tidal waters and I agree with your entire assesment including the cons about rudder issues in current. In summary, it is a phenomenal fishing kayak with an unbeatable warranty at a reasonable price point. Again, stellar job on the comprehensive video bro!
Thank you! I agree it is a phenomenal fishing kayak! I love it even more now that I have a truck and don’t have to car top this thing anymore 🤣. Thanks for checking out the video!
well done video, you covered a lot, Im currently shopping for my first pedal drive kayak and this is one of the models that Im interested in. Im also looking at the Hobie Compass and the Wilderness Recon 120. My price range is to stay under $3000.00
I was looking into getting this kayak and came across your review. You covered a great many aspects of the kayak and did an excellent job!!! Thanks for helping me decide whether or not to buy one. I have decided to buy one based on your review
That’s what I love to hear! If only I could have Old Town take notice 🤣😂. Thanks for checking out the video and I hope you love the kayak as much as I do!
Thanks for this video. I have two new Old Town Kayaks coming 8/9/22. Bought the Topwater 120 PDL for me and the Sportsman 120 PDL for my son. Definitely liked the gear setup. That is my obsession is tuning it for best use and access. I am 62 though in great shape stability is key!
Hope you guys love them as much as my wife and I enjoy ours! Sure is a blast to be out on these kayaks! Let me know how you like them after you've taken them out!
@@fishncook23 It doesn't seem like it would be a huge difference, but I will say that the 106 is quite a bit lighter than the 120. So if you are looking to car top, or throw in the bed of a truck, that might be a better option. Or just do like I did and buy both 😂🤣
Great review. Super comprehensive and had I seen this before getting my used PA14 I might have been fishing out of the PDL 120. I am surprised Old Town hasn't made you an Ambassador yet👍
Thank you so much for the kind words Keith! That means a lot! Being an ambassador for Old Town would be awesome, I’m a big fan of their product! Hope to run into you out on the Delta sometime! 🤙🏻
Thank you! That's awesome! I hope you are just as happy with your purchase as I have been! Let me know how you like it if you do in fact in up going with the Old Town!
I got the pdl120, the only problem I have is when it gets hot at the lake the haul gets swell up and cause a stiff When steering. The rudder deploy cord tighten up. Other guys said ro they have that problem too to fixed that have to open the the latch under the seat let hot air escape. Take care and good luck fishing!
Great Job with the content you made. Thank You from Gardnerville NV. And love the Kayak City sticker, purchased my Native Slayer Max 12.5 from there. Thanks again and Enjoy your days on the Delta 😎👍
Love your videos. I have the same exact kayak as yours as you might notice in my thumbnail picture. I fish the costal waters of Maine and agree that this kayak can take some mighty big waves. I swear some lobster boats get a kick of seeing how big a wave we can handle with their wake. I also agree about the rudder in winds and current, can't wait to see what upgrade rudder you go with. Question, seeing and knowing we have the port side paddle holder, do you not use it because of that bungie snap? And for those built in horizontal rod holders, they are only good for transporting two rods when hauling to and from the launch. Keep up with the great videos.
For the paddle clip if I am on a lake I will leave it clipped in. But when I’m on the Delta, where I have to use my paddle often because of the weeds/wind/current, I just find it much easier to have on my right side and not have to unclip the bungee each time. Just feel like it saves me more time to have it accessible on the double header. Still not a fan of the rudder, but I haven’t upgraded yet. There is a metal rudder that you can upgrade to, and I need to go that route. I did add the rudder bolt from Navarre and honestly I haven’t seen any difference 🫤. Thanks for checking out the video!
Rod stagers on the deck facing forward is what sold me on this kayak. All I do is skinny water fishing and my upright rod holders only get used for my short net and my through scupper man-power pole
Definitely see the use in that for skinny water, like I said in the video, but I don’t fish that style much and would rather have the space under the seat. But it really is just a minor inconvenience and I’ve managed to deal with it just fine. I absolutely have no regrets in choosing this kayak!
@@DoubleBogeyBass I completely get them being in the way of storage for open water fishing. I used to use an ascend 128t that I rigged up with a 360 swivel seat from a boat and the rod holders would always be in the way to turn sideways to fish at angles behind me and get in and out of the boat and having to paddle around it. Highly looking forward to landing more fish with reverse peddling having free hands
You gotta get the floating propeller nuts, they come in pairs of 2. It makes changing out the propeller a breeze and you won't need that tool because you twist it off by hand. Plus they float so you don't have to worry about the nut sinking.
I'm sure that I will be picking more things up from Nick in the future and I will probably get that propeller nut, the tool I have cracked anyway so it's not really usable anymore.
Cool review Jeremy very detailed! Remember fly fishing on a Canoe with my dad in North Carolina this summer and we nearly tipped over twice. This kayak seems much more stable!
Thanks Chris! And yes this kayak is soooo stable. I do want to try fly fishing from it. It's something that's been on my to-do list, but I'm not the best fly fisherman 😁
There definitely is a need for both 😂. You can cover more ground in a boat, but I can access more hard to reach areas in a kayak, which is very appealing. I'd for sure tell you to get one, you won't be disappointed 😁 Thanks for watching!
Thanks for showing your technique on how to get your loaded kayak off the water. Launched my AP120 out of sugar barge this past weekend and boy was it a pain getting the fully loaded yak back on the cart then up the boat ramp. Definitely gonna try loading it on the cart while the yak is still floating. Genius!
Just make sure you find a way to strap the cart down, because it will try and move on you if it's not strapped down, I learned that one the hard way and had the kayak come completely off the cart fully loaded 🤣. Thanks for watching!
Same kayak as mine and I love it. The only thing different I have on my boat is a sav-a-jake ladder step I tie to the port side handle and keep up under the seat in case of capsizing. Only had to use it once due to an accidental slip of my 85lb lab watching me unhook a fish while I was already leaning. But it makes it so easy to get back in and to flip the boat back. It is a bit heavy like you said but overall a great boat. I also have a bunch of Navarre gear as well.
I hope I never have to experience flipping it when I am not trying to like in this video, but I can see how that would be useful. And my lab weighs 95 pounds and it can get sketchy with her out there on it, so I usually don’t bring any of my gear with me if I take her, just in case.
@@DoubleBogeyBass Mine only weighs 85 but it was me already leaning and her slipping that did it. It was very fast too when it did. Still had the fish on! Some of my things were not secured though and I had to go back the next day with mask and wetsuit to retrieve my glasses and a rod from the bottom. :) Love your channel
Thats a fish catching machine you got there. I like how stable it is cause I can't fish sitting down. When you finaly got it to flip but came out the water woth your hat already back on reminded me of myself lol. Great vid jeremy.
Thanks Miles! I'm the same way, I love to stand and fish. One thing I need to look at getting next year is some form of anchor system, so I can stay on a spot when I want to just work it over!
Yeah here in florida I'm always flipping some form of cover and you can't flip properly sitting down. As far an anchor goes I used a couple tied up brings in my first boat. It ain't pretty but it's cheap and will work till you get a better plan. I've also always wondered if I could use a d ring or eye loop on the side of a boat that I could run a push pole through and down into the bottom amd if that would hold in shallower water like a power pole. Never tried it but thought alot about it.
@@MilesMartinGolf I'm considering a power pole, but they are expensive. I have thought of something similar to what you are talking about but using one of my track mounted rod holders over the side of the kayak with a stake out pole down through that, wondering if that would be strong enough to hold it in place.
Yeah that was my problem. I can't justify a power pole when I cost more than my boat. I think the rod holder is a good idea cause you can duel use out of it. They make collapsible 12 and 15ft push poles. You could easily push the kayak through shallow water very quietly and then possibly stake your boat down with it.
I'm curious how difficult it is to get it on top of your car? Do you have a video? I think that kayak is 90+ lbs depending on drive, chair, personal items. Great video!
Good vid. Got interested in the Salty after my first choice, a Hoodoo Impulse 120P started generating a lot of bad comments on the prop drive popping out of the mount. One concern is the weight, have to cartop the kayak. But thanks for the info, very well presented. U got a new subscriber.
Thank you! I definitely would recommend Old Town. It is a great product and they have top notch customer service (from what I hear) I haven’t had any issues to test that yet 😆
Just an awesome review video !! I’m still in a boat for now since we got so much invested in it but this kayak would definitely be my choice for sure. Another UA-cam fisherman CreekCrawler fishes out of the Old Towne also. Thanks for doing this !! 👍
Great video. I would like to see the different ways of getting the kayak up on the car. I have a 2010 RAV4 that has a roof rack, but I'm not sure which method would work best. I would also love to hear what your wife thinks about it too. Thanks.
Thank you Cynthia! That's a good idea for a video, I should do that. And I know my wife loves the kayak, but maybe I can get her to get on here and let you know her thoughts 😁
Hi Cynthia. I absolutely love this kayak. Mine is the shorter one, PDL106. Pedaling is the most relaxing way to kayak. I don't fish much, I just enjoy going out on the water. I'm very comfortable in this kayak in regards to seat comfort, stability, and ease of maneuvering/steering.
Yeah it’s a bummer. It took me a long time until I felt comfortable drilling holes in my kayak and adding some, but I haven’t had any issues with them since.
@@DoubleBogeyBass I live along the coast in NC. Do you think this is good for both sound and ocean? Also because it's only 10 feet do you feel the limitation of space? I'm stuck between this and the 132.
@@andrewfleck4314 I haven’t taken mine out in salt water yet, but I know many people do. I fish out of the 120 though, so it’s 12 foot. I bought the 10 footer for my wife. The Big Water 132 might be the better option if you’re planning on doing more salt water fishing.
That was the best review. I am the intercostal fishing waters . Use two small rails behind the seat. Cut a 2x3 , 2 1/4 inch bolt work great like trolling motor 30 pounds trolling , 100 hour lithium 12 volt battery. Usually 4.5 hour safely great power . Sure change enjoyable fish Sheepheads around o kms pedal and power. Big water very very secure kayak , 76 year old fishing guy
I do have a video of that on my channel. Check out the link in the description, or go directly to my channel and search for the video it’s labeled how to car top large kayak.
great video. i just bought one and can't wait to get out there and slay some fish! the only downfall i see is it seems like alot more water inside then i would like. ( pvc cap on end of seat may work)
Thanks Lisa! Which model did you get? The 120 or the 106? My wife has the 106 and hers does get a little more water in the cockpit than mine does, but it is still not very much. Honestly there is very little water in the cockpit of mine, it's never an issue. I have seen some Native kayaks that have like an inch of water in the kayak, and I don't know how people would deal with that, it would drive me crazy.
Nice review. Fairly thorough. I would have liked to see you load that beast on your car roof rack by yourself though. That’s one of my areas where f concern, but I think I’ve got an option with the Yakima Showboat. Also, I think the rod holders are actually one of the better design ideas (at least in theory). Having your rods stick up in back presents at least two possible hazards. When you have to approach overhanging trees, any rods standing upright can get caught. Also, if you happen to forget your rods are behind you and wind up for a big cast, you can clip off your rod tips. With rods that run a couple hundred bucks each, that can get expensive. So I’m thinking having the rods laying horizontal in front is better. I get why you might feel you are missing out on under seat storage, but it seems like a fair trade to me. Plenty of other storage on the boat. Anyway, thanks for the review.
Loading the kayak on top of my car is probably my next video I’ll come out with (already started working on it) so make sure you subscribe to see that if you haven’t already. The rod stagers just aren’t practical for me, I much prefer them behind me in my tackle crate, and so far no issues with that. Plus I carry more than just 2 rods, and that’s all you can put in the stagers under the seat. But I get your point about the hazards, you just have to be a little more conscious of that. Thanks for watching!
At the end you said that you purchased a pdl 106 For your wife... would love to see a video comparison of the 106 and the 120 PDL... side-by-side comparison. I'm trying to decide which one to buy for my wife. Do you have such a video or can you make one? We both own auto pilot 120s . And I am going to get a Pdl 120 For my camp and I think a 106 for my wife . Hopefully you have a Is comparison video. Thank you
I don’t currently have a video of that, but it is definitely something I’m planning on doing because I have not spent anytime in on the 106, but I do want to compare the 2 and make a video about. Stay tuned!
Awesome video. Man I really want this boat for my photo/video work. Paddling and running cameras is such a PITA. Need something smaller for my loan outings, the Jackson Killroy DT is just to big and heavy to handle alone with just me, a paddle and my camera.
I have a video of it on my channel. You can look in the description of this video and there is a link to that video, or you can go to my channel and search for it. I explain exactly what I did to modify that tray. Check it out!
Best review I hav seen on stability of any kayak. Most are with young guys that may weigh 180lbs. I’m 230 and 66 years old and I would feel comfortable after watching your video. Thanks for sharing I may have made decision finally on what kayak to buy. Do you have second choice for stability? Thanks again
Glad I could help with a decision, I don't think you would have anything to worry about with this kayak in terms of stability. I know the Native's and Hobie's are very stable as well, but I have never actually been in one to have a personal experience.
This is honestly my first ever kayak that I have owned. I remember when I was researching kayaks I had toyed with the idea of buying a used paddle version and waiting to buy the pedal version, knowing that the pedal version was really what I wanted. It was my wife who convinced me to pay the extra money and get the one I really wanted. She said you're just going to be unhappy in that one, so you might as well spend the extra money and get what you'll be happy with. She was totally right, I would have been unhappy with that purchase, but I haven't for one second been unhappy that I purchased the Old Town PDL! That said, you can find some really good deals on used Kayaks, and if it gets you out on the water to places you weren't able to access before, then I say go for it! If you can afford to spend the extra money on a brand new one, then I say go for that as well! 😆
I took my ascend 10 t out today fishing loaded it up with all my fishing gear and launched it , it flipped over immediately. it sucks I really want a new kayak.
Oh man that's terrible! I hope you were able to salvage most, if not all, of your gear! I hope you're able to get you a more stable kayak like the Old Town PDL's.
Thanks for the video it was very helpful. I just purchased the same one. The pan under the seat is a great idea. Can you please tell me where you got the tray. Thanks again . Neal F
Excellent video! I am thinking about purchasing this kayak. How does it paddle from the seated position? Have you paddled without the drive for any distance?
Thank you! I had an issue with my pedal recently and had to paddle a good distance and it was manageable but I was glad that I was able to fix the pedal before my next outing. I haven't taken it down a river with rapids yet, but I have seen other people do it, and it seems to be just fine.

@@DoubleBogeyBass I’m still trying to decide! Both of them have good things about them!
@@fishncook23 It doesn't seem like it would be a huge difference, but I will say that the 106 is quite a bit lighter than the 120. So if you are looking to car top, or throw in the bed of a truck, that might be a better option. Or just do like I did and buy both 😂🤣
@@DoubleBogeyBass Don’t give me any ideas!🤣 Do you have a link to the company that you mentioned that you brought the accessories from?

Thank you Steve! I hope you enjoy the kayak, I absolutely love mine, and my wife loves her 106 as well! Thanks for watching!!
Really good review. I’m currently fishing out of a BKC but planning on trading up. Thanks for the info.
Thanks for checking it out! Hopefully you get to upgrade!
Awesome insight
Thank you!
Great video! I think your review here has sold me on which pedal kayak I will be purchasing.
Thank you! That's awesome! I hope you are just as happy with your purchase as I have been! Let me know how you like it if you do in fact in up going with the Old Town!
@@DoubleBogeyBass I'm going to a fishing show at the Mohegan Sun casino tomorrow to check out lots of kayaks, but this one was already on the list.
Did not know you were from Cali, pretty amazing
Yup!
Great video
Thank you!
Interesting, I'll have to look into that, I don't think that is the issues I've had with the rudder but it's definitely something I'll have to try.
Thank you for the video. This has been extremely helpful, and I will be buying one of these in the near future.
Thanks for checking it out Austin! You won’t be disappointed if you get one. I wish I could spend more time out on mine!

Thanks for watching Steven! I can't wait to hit up the Delta this Spring!
@@DoubleBogeyBass Nice 😎👍
Awsome review ya Pretty much nailed with this video well done 👍🏼
Thank you so much!
Just bought an Old Town 120 PDL, glad to see that it seems to be a great stable kayak. Hopefully I can get it on the water soon.
Sweet! I'm sure you will love it! I absolutely love mine!
Great breakdown
Thank you so much Tim!
great job on the review. Ive got some interest in a Kayak even though I have a 21 ft boat. The Kayak thing appears to be a lot of fun.
@@jerryfaircloth thanks so much Jerry! Glad you were able to recover your items 😁
Yes, I have a video on my channel. It’s linked in the description of this video as well.
I just found it too, you are quick!! :)@@DoubleBogeyBass

That lack of rear tracks really pissed me off. I didn't know until I went and picked it up at the freight liner.
Yeah it’s a bummer. It took me a long time until I felt comfortable drilling holes in my kayak and adding some, but I haven’t had any issues with them since.
What a detailed review. Well done. I like the cons, so to speak. That yak is tough to flip too. Great video.
Thanks man! I really don't have much to complain about on this kayak, even the "cons" are minor. Thanks for watching!
What a great review. Looking to buy one.
Thank you Andrew! Pull the trigger on it, you won’t regret it! 😁
Use two small rails behind the seat. great video. i just bought one and can't wait to get out there and slay some fish! the only downfall i see is it seems like alot more water inside then i would like.
@@DoubleBogeyBass picked up the 120. i wanted the 106 but no stock near me for the rest of the year. i pick it up next sat. and i can't wait.
@@faithoverfear70 You're going to love it!
Posted the Kayak loading video if you haven't checked it out yet 😀

Thank you! The hands free pedaling would definitely be an advantage to what you currently have.

Very informative. Do you recommend buying a used kayak to get started fishing?
Iv been looking at a PDL and was wondering about the set up i could run and this matches what I want to do to it.
