You all are killing me 🤦🏼♀️ Part of the problem is that you’ve acquired (I’m assuming “bought” for most of you since it’s highly unlikely you all found pure bred 8 week old puppies at shelters) the puppies when they’re ONLY 6-8 weeks old! This is why I hate breeders. They sell the puppies way too young. In order to become well rounded puppies, they really need to be left with their mother and siblings until they are twelve weeks old. The mother and siblings teach puppies (and kittens) SO many lessons in the 6-12 weeks age. It is not natural for puppies that young to ever be alone. They always have their siblings, even if the mother is away getting food or using the bathroom. The very first mistake most puppy owners make is getting the puppy too young. Hopefully that info will help someone.
I’ve got an 8 week old puppy and it’s so hard to try getting her in a crate, she starts digging and biting the material on her bed and she is scared when I close the gate, she starts nipping and I can’t get her to stop and I think we’re not going to be able to keep her.
The absolute best tip trying to crate train: just like Rachel said, make the crate Disneyland! Our current puppy's trainer recommended sneaking the best snack "jackpots" into the crate consistently and repetitively. The trainer also recommended to try and feed her meals in the crate too. What we did for several weeks: everytime the dog was in another room, we'd sneak off to the other room that had the crate and leave special treats in it. The "sketchy crate" suddenly became the awesome "magical crate" with snacks coming from Narnia. And we did this every single time the dog was in another room. I also used some of the tricks Rachel recommended in one of her other crate training videos. Our puppy still sleeps in bed with us (our choice), but she will go to her crate voluntarily to "chill out" now. I think this has helped her become a more "independent" dog.
Jedidah Fire my dog had horrible separation/ isolation anxiety when in her crate, and we first tried having her sleep in her crate. That didn’t work/ made it worse, so we had her sleep with us, and we worked on her crate anxiety. Once she finally figured out her crate was her safe haven, she’s now hangs outs, sleeps, chills and can be left alone for a long duration of time without worrying - and yet we still have her sleep with us. She is the definition of independent - it’s just different for every dog.
I just adopted an abused older dog that barks nonstop when I leave. Your tips are going to help get him crate trained. I'm the only one and work from home now so don't have a choice. And in the cold weather, its hard on the exercise thing. I throw his toys in the apartment.

This was beyond helpful. Got a COVID pup and we ended up moving and both me and my boyfriend have to work and the dog has been having horrible separation anxiety and we have received noise complaints because of it and it is STRESSFUL. Thank you for these helpful tips!
Thank you for saying it’s going to be ok. I got a puppy in May & I took her everywhere with me at first. Now, I can’t leave her alone for two minutes without her screaming. My neighbors complained. I started taking her out on a long leash in the back yard to get more exercise & the neighbors complained about that. I can’t afford dog daycare at $200 a week. I need to leave her at home sometimes when I go out. I’m working on training, but she still cries when I go. This has gotten to be a nightmare.
Hey guys! Thank you for this video. It has helped, but Taft is uncontrollable when left alone. He's a 6 year old rescue who was given a bunch of meds to calm him down at the shelter. I have tried absolutely everything. From every kind of collar to indoor bark control devices, thundershirt, pheromones spray, music... Everything. What has worked wonders though! Is that I've recorded myself saying things I say to him all the time like "You're the best. I love you. Your doing great! Can you be quiet? Can you sit?" And loop it at intervals that get longer and longer. So it's a 15 hour long audio of me "talking to him". I don't know how it works, but it has stopped everything!!! Sometimes I will come home and he will be asleep!! He even started going to the crate on his own time. It has taken off a lot of stress in my life since animal control already stopped by twice to ask that I get his barking under control. It's hard, but not impossible.
I play the loop on my computer and I turn the screen off so it comes out of the speakers. I'm still doing this everytime I leave and the barking is under control. You got this!
What a great idea. I'm very glad I'm a cat person. I love dogs too, but cats are much less maintenance. I have 3 and one of them gets a bit of separation anxiety when my spouse leaves. As soon as I call her and she knows she's not alone, she's fine though and often comes for some couch time. I'm home all the time, so my cats are pretty spoiled.

My girl has severe separation anxiety and it’s so hard to work on fixing it, but I’m seeing improvements slowly! I’ve been crating her each time I have to leave, leaving calmly, coming back calmly, freezing wet food in a Kong/Toppl to give her before I leave, bringing her on walks before I leave, walking her when I get home again, puzzles, etc. It’s not even just her being alone either - if I’m somewhere else (like if I gave the leash to a friend on a walk and had to use the bathroom) and someone has her, she absolutely LOSES it. Shaking, crying, screaming, drooling, non-stop panting, refusing to drink water, etc. I think she definitely has isolation anxiety on top of it, since she does do better out of the crate when people are home, but she won’t really interact with anyone until I get home. She just stares out the window and waits 😭.
We adopted an adult dog who has started escaping the crate by breaking the wire and the door when ever we aren’t around so hopefully these tips will help her calm down
I need to train my dog to not bark and whine and howel when he's in his crate and I'm gone. I watched 2 other videos from a very well known trainer, whom I learned SOOOOOO much from, but both of his had nothing to do with the human being away, so I had to search elsewhere. And that brought me to you. I'm SO glad my go-to dog training consultant failed me this time! You're awesome! Seeing your dog and their super chill countenance tells me you absolutely know what you're talking about! My boy makes me look like a genius because he picks up things so well and he's very consistent. I simply don't know what to do for him when he's alone in the crate or bedroom, so I've never dealt with it. Thank you sooooo much for this video, Rachel! I've been struggling with my rescue dog's separation anxiety for over a year now, and it's really worn me down. I paid so much money for doggie daycare, trainers, dog walkers, and fancy toys because I was desperate for help. Nothing seemed to work, but your point on mental stimulation in particular is what started to change things. My pup is a toy poodle, and she's very smart. I don't know why it never occurred to me that she really needed something to DO when I was at work. Sounds like such a straight-forward tip but I really never thought about it.. Thank you again!

We just moved a long distance into a house with new sounds, a huge yard with tons of activity, and a different climate. Our small dog is extremely smart, knows lots of tricks, has a dog park sized yard, and isolation anxiety now. The other 2 dogs are older, and chill out when we leave, but this one (a mini-schnoodle) has developed anxiety. This video helps, a lot. We don't want him to go on meds so hopefully what we are doing helps.
You should be a dog trainer 😄 I’ve heard more invaluable advice on this episode than I’ve had with my dog trainer! Was feeling at an all time low last night due to my two year old rescue poodle following me everywhere whilst trying to train her, “door is a bore” (normally she shows encouraging signs) but yesterday she followed me for two hours straight! Uber fail (for me and her). Then she eliminated twice in the hall (she does her business on walks only). Anyway long story short, found this incredibly insightful and optimistic thanks!
I think my doggy has separation anxiety she’s always been super attached to my mum, I have the job of staying with her when mum leaves and when mum leaves she SCREAMS she screams like she does when she’s in pain. It’s awful and heartbreaking, thank you so much for making this video I’ll try these techniques when she’s calmed a bit.

I started teaching my rescue pup, new tricks & exercise for his separation anxiety... so far, they are working!!! I felt so horrible for having adopted a dog that I didn't know wasn't crate trained due to his separation anxiety. I began those tips, and there have been no more accidents! I know it's only been a few weeks, but I think we may have finally turned that corner! So even if we haven't, thank you for your help!!!

the first two weeks I had my puppy he wasn't allowed in the house, I had her fenced off in the porch, she learned to relax alone in that space, now has no problem whenever I need to keep her alone

Hi! Chihuahua's are extremely clever. You can get interactive toys and puzzle games. Nina Ottossan has different level puzzles fit for every age and breed of dog. I highly recommend you check those out. Kongs, snuffle mats, lick mats are other types of mental enrichment toys/ tools you can get.

As other have mentioned already, I really appreciate you being so nice to us - giving us confidence, telling us it's okay if we aren't yet there were we want to be, telling us you believe in us. I just got a new puppy - and I wanted a dog all my life and had so many plans and thought I would for sure do everything right because I had informed myself so much. I basically thought I would be a really good dog owner and trainer right from the beginning... Arrogant, I know. Thing is, I researched so much about dog training... But now I have a puppy. Who can't focus so much yet, just got separated from mom and siblings, etc etc. And actually isn't really food motivated and not motivated by most toys either (with the exception of plushies and... shoes. Which she loves.) And sometimes I just don''t know what to do. Now I am watching all your videos, and actually start to realize that I have to go step by step. I can't expect to really train a lot of commands in the first month I think. Instead I have to focus on potty training, crate training, probably walking on the leash a bit.... And yeah, leaving her alone, even if it's just for a few seconds. She will cry and try to bite through the crate even when I am just leaving the room and she can still hear me, even if I give her something to chew, even if she is exercised, fed, and tired. Only when she has fallen asleep could I leave, but I think she would panic when she would wake up without me being there, so we have to train that while she is awake.
As a first time dog owner (Bicolor Workline GSD). I am very grateful that I have this feeling in my heart that I follow to solve issues with my dog. I have been doing this before I looked up the video. The reason I looked up this video is because I wanted to double check if I am doing things alright (Obviously not exactly like this). One example would be the room and jumping on you thingy. I would have my GSD in the basement for an hour, then open the door to let him in. He used to be jumpy. I would just look at him and study him. I then understood what I needed to do. I would hug him and tell him that I will never abandon him. I did that over the course of 3 days. The following days I did it different. When I would open the door from the basement he would be hyper but I did not acknowledge him. I would also turn my back so he won't jump at me. He started calming down. After he calmed down I will then acknowledge him with a light pat in his head. This lasted about a week and a half. Now he does not jump at me or goes destructo mode when I am away. Now the only time he jumps is when my father ask my big pupper for a kiss on the cheek everytime he comes home from work. May all of you reach new bonds with your babies.

The beginning almost made me cry because I'm a student and even if I have my parents here, they only help with the dog medically or getting the food, but not training, which is the problem for me. I have a siberian husky so its really hard to do it sometimes. She's 7 months and just got separated from my aunt's dog. ooh, good rant, gotta get help now
We just rescued another Rottie yesterday who is 2 days shy of a year old and the “isolation anxiety” term I think nailed it on the head. It’s also not a term I’ve heard yet. I’ve done the Disneyland crate thing but she wants me to watch her or go on every ride with her at this Disneyland. Lol Her frozen Kong, if I leave the room just for a moment she stops and goes bananas. As soon as I get back she wants to show me her awesomeness. It’s hard when she’s still learning a name…being tethered when outside of the crate due to her reaction to the other Rottie (who outweighs her by 30 lbs but is so relaxed she’s a Godsend), so the tips are helpful and I think will be more helpful when she’s allowed

Thank you for this video! These are solid tips which have worked for me when applied consistently. One point of departure, however, is there needs to be more of an emphasis among content creators in dog training that crate training isn’t a end all be all for dog owners. Crate training may be effective for potty training, giving a dog a safe space, and ensuring comfort for both the owner and pet when leaving. For context, I had and trained dogs growing up, and we never used a crate. But when I started with a new dog (larger, very active Maltese) as an independent owner, I thought I’d give it a go. Turns out, it was actually when I got rid of the crate and instead created an unconfined comfort space (just a really comfy bed dog area with toys) that I saw all the difference. My dog was anxious even for seconds when in the crate (chewing at gate, panting, barking, and whining), and I tried slowly increasing time in it with no luck. I chalked this up to normal puppy resistance but it was the confinement that seemed to worsen the anxiety. I also did all of the open door crate things as well with the pricey Diggs crate I bought. My dog would just find ways to escape from inside even when I was just around the corner for a few minutes. This was even after long walks, exercise, and mental activities. That said, I followed to a T all of the crate training tips, including the ones Rachel and others offer like normalizing the crate, playing games in and around it, feeding all meals in the crate, changing its location and slowly increasing time away, from day one. I have come to accept my dog is just not a crate dog. I’ve since had pet trainers I’m working with confirm what I suspected: The crate isn’t for every dog. I say that not to discredit the idea of crate training when away to curb separation anxiety because my experience is anecdotal. But now I leave him in his comfort area casually (no goodbye or tell-tells that I’m leaving), and come back to a dog that is happy to see me but is politely sitting or relaxing in his area. The difference - not making him feel confined to the area to leave him in and giving him room to walk around a little when he knows mom is coming back. Moreover, trying to leave your dog in a crate and not giving them an opportunity to spread their legs and walk around an open space has always felt a bit cruel to me. Again, I know for larger dogs people might want to use the crate to avoid destructive behavior but I had large dogs prone to those behaviors previously too. The crate isn’t a panacea for those behaviors - it’s figuring out the root cause for those behaviors, not trying to eliminate the opportunities. I’m a big believer in giving dogs the chance to make mistakes and learn from their owners. Same goes for potty training as well. The key takeaway concerns the necessity of experimenting and really paying attention to what works and what doesn’t. As opposed to spending money, time, and energy on a perceived solution that isn’t a good fit because it’s the popular “responsible dog owner” thing to do. There’s an industry around the crate and endorsements galore to consider as well. Trying different things to curb separation anxiety like behavior is better than trying to stick it out and keep at it simply to make something work which is not a good fit.

I’ve tried literally everything suggested on so many different videos. One thing I think is key considering my high anxiety dog is asleep for the past 30 minutes of me being gone (FaceTiming), it’s only going to be a solid session of mental and physical stimulation beforehand. No going in and out for 3 5 10 seconds. No giving treats. No toy. No music. No additional dog. None of that extra stuff. As someone that also deals with high anxiety, anxiety requires A LOT of energy. It’s literally the same thing with us humans. If you have a solid workout and study. Do you feel anxiety at the end of it or are you too drained to care what’s going on around you?

I just adopted my dog he has severe anxiety in general. I have no clue what to do. I need and want to help him. He loves his create. I walk him about 1.5 hours (3 walks) per day He freaks out when I leave. He develops diarrhea when left alone, after being dropped off, and if we have to get on the freeway! I'm at wits end to be honest. However I love him he is so sweet I'm his 3rd home and couldn't image giving him up. I need help.
I have an anxious rescue who we adopted on mothers day. Our vet recommended probiotics for the anxious pooping. They've helped but when our routine changes in the slightest she has accidents. Have you tried fortiflora for the anxious diarrhea? Also you're probably heckin' nervous on the highway which is making the dog nervous on the highway. Does the doggo feel secure? Idk I buckle my dogs harness to the seatbelt so she can lay down or sit up and look out the window. I think if my dog were more stressed like yours I'd medicate them. I'm on medication for my anxiety so I can understand a dog needing that help too. Just a random passerby's two cents I am not a professional, hope you get your dog the help they need!
Cesar Milan has great videos on how to work on separation anxiety. It is normal for a dog to want to be with the pack leader all the time. If they are having trouble with leaving practice his video. She mentions it shortly in this video a similar method, but She misses parts and examples. With a dog that has so much trouble with separation I would recommend his video instead of this.
My Joy Unleashed , wow. I’m having the exact same experience with my new lab. I’m also his 3rd home. He has horrible separation anxiety, but loves his crate. He has naps in it, and is perfect at night sleeping in it, but when he’s home alone, he freaks out and actually tries to escape and just hurts himself. We latched his crate (extra) with carabiner hooks for more security, but he drools and pants like crazy. Rachel, we need help.

Thank you so much for this! I have a lot to think about and implement. We've had a new pup at 8 weeks, he's attached to me and I find it so difficult to leave him as he cries. I try not to leave him to the point he's screaming and just come back when he's quiet as if nothing's happened. I watched another one of your videos about limiting their environment so we decided to put a playpen around his crate with plenty of toys. I feel so mean as he had free roam of the kitchen for 5 days but we need to build his confidence of being alone as I will be returning to work soon and I've been finding it really tough having him glued to me or trying to chew things he shouldn't, as a pup would 😂 it's day one of the pen, he cries, jumps up and barks occasionally when I'm with him but will play with his toys/sleep. Just breaks my heart when he whines, I've cried a lot 💔 I'm going to slowly move myself around the pen and leave for short bursts. If you have anymore tips I will happily take all I can get or if I'm doing something wrong please tell me, I want the best for him and feel like a terrible mum 😥 ❤️

I'm planning to get a dog so I've been doing a lot of research on what to expect and how to deal with problems etc, and for cases where the dog's separation anxiety is a serious problem a really effective option is a Vibrating Collar. It'll have a remote control and/or one with a volume sensor to detect when the dog is barking. Basically it'll just do a short quick Vibration of varying intensities, it doesn't hurt the dog in any way and it actually emulates what a mother dog would do with a young pup when she nips one around the neck, which is just a way of communicating 'This behaviour is not okay.'

I am in the UK we've got a 5 month puppy rescued, she spent the first 5 months of her life with other dogs. She just goes absolutely bananas in the crate all night long, despite being happy to go in it during the day. Its as soon as the door shuts, even if we are right there. The same if we just leave the room. Its currently absolutely exhausting. we've currently temporarily put the crate training to the side and have made our house puppy proof and are practicing distance etc.

there are so many tips if you have roommates or are married but its tough when youre solo, working from home and have other pets that need time as well. I will try some of these tips
I got a puppy back in March, luckily I have been home with him since quarantine. I am having MAJOR struggles crate training him probably because I am home with him 24/7. Im trying your tips and very slowly see little progress, but he still cries a lot especially when we have to put him in the cage (when going for errands). He isn't in the crate for more than 1 to 2 hours at this time. He freely goes in the crate and will sniff it but freaks out pretty much as soon as i leave the room (crate is closed). We just started a training class, I am hoping your videos and his training will help me help him be successful. Its a ton of work on my end, and I think most people don't understand that its most likely the human needs to set them up for success.
I relate to everything you said about creating an overly dependent dog. I got my dog Atticus when I was 22 right out of college and moved out. Got an apartment and was with him always. He has issues with excessive barking when I left and I eventually got a boyfriend, moved into a house and he was better bc there were more people around usually…after 5 years we just broke up, so I’m moving back into an apartment with him and I’m so nervous the behavior will come back. Going try nose work and the training but I’m so nervous for neighbors to complain bc it’s going to take time for him to adapt again. 😭

With crates I tend to put a couple of their meals a day in a kong and freeze it. If feeding kibble soak it then fill. It's part of my pups Disney distraction. The freezing also helps with teething. While they are occupied vary it. Stay in the room, pop out the room for longer and longer. Go for a shower etc. Slowly build it up while they are happily munching. Set them up for success though. Get them slowly used to the crate and do some training, play or exercise before practicing crate or alone time. Stay positive, you'll get there. Go slow and take a deep breath if it gets hard. Y'all can do this!

I believe I caused my pups separation anxiety. The mental stimulatjon has helped in tiring him out, however it does take more time in the morning to tire him out!
I’ve been watching all of your videos. I found you once I got a puppy foster. It’s funny, I’ve always had dog fosters but this is my first puppy and I’m learning so much from you! Thank you so much. You clearly have such a way with animals and I thank you so much for including how you helped your cats along the way. I have a cat too and she was so upset when I brought our puppy (vinny) home and I was feeling so guilty! But now I am learning how to satisfy them both. You are so truly rad!
1. Spread the love with other members of the house 2. Teach them new tricks 3. Don’t make a fuss about coming back 4. Make the room disneyland (feed them, tricks, etc.) 5. Practice random opening the door, going up the stairs, so they don’t associate that with you leaving. 6. Frozen stuffed kong or hiding things around the room 7. The anxiety is probably your fault
I have a Velcro jack Russell puppy and I’ve been reinforcing the behaviour. I’m watching him and his litter ate is away and they both are like Velcro with Horner. This puppy. May become mine so I have to learn this before I take him home. Excellent video. I have two floors and he can’t get up and down stairs yet.
Hey! I haven't commented in a while! I needed this so much. ever since I commented last I got 2 puppies! I have 4 dogs and 3 out of them 4 have separation anxiety and I've tried everything even giving them so many tricks and letting them out in the huge open grass more than their potty needs (even more than what I used to and I used to let them out about every 4 hours even during the night than my mom would do it while I was at school but than I started doing it every 3 hours and I was so tired) and I gave them new toys every week and I left them in a crate for seconds or minutes at a time but they would hate it so much. you posted this video (to me) yesterday and I tried the people method and it worked wonders. My mom stays home and the dogs aren't as comfortable with her since I feed the dogs and walk them and all that because I like the responsibility but my mom gave them their meals yesterday and today and now when I leave for school they aren't crying and screaming. I'll update to see if it gets better or worse.

I currently have a one year old maltipoo that I got when he was 3 months old. For most of his life he has spent being with me in quarantine during covid. He has pretty bad separation anxiety and hates whenever I leave him alone or with other people, even my parents who he loves. It’s like if I am not there in the room with him he will never be happy or content. He follows me everywhere I go, even to the bathroom. He’s been attached to me the second I got him. I tried crate training him but after a month I gave up and just let him sleep with me. I’ve definitely spoiled him rotten which has made the separation anxiety worse. Does anyone else have a dog that you’ve had since a puppy suffering from separation anxiety?? He’s never been abandoned and he knows that I will come back for him, but he still barks and howls like crazy whenever I leave him. He doesn’t do any destructive behavior like chew or defecate but he will howl and cry for about 15-20 minutes after I leave. He also has a problem with being independent and spending time alone by himself even when I am in the house. How can I help improve his independence?

Rachel.... why didn’t I find you when we first adopted our 1 year old black lab almost a year ago??? He was originally adopted before but the family brought him back to the shelter and he has huge separation anxiety I believe from that. He’s turning 2 soon and he’s just now starting to become comfortable by himself. We also had to move twice in the one year we’ve had him so far. So I know that also played a part with getting him used to our first home with just me and my husband, and now we are currently living with my parents and we are soon gonna move again... sighhh I know we’re probably stressing him but it’s things we can’t help. But we are here for the long run with him and I hope he’s patient with all these changes. Soon we will have our own home again to let him get used to. Thanks for all the tips!

What would you suggest for this scenario.. 60 yr old (no friends or family close by) living alone with two dogs (13, 8) that have not been separated since the 8 yr old was 2 wks of age. Owner spends 99% at home. The 13 yr old won't last another 12 mths. Crate never used. Hints, tips and advice to transition the 8 yrs old into being left alone once the older dog has gone. There will be times where the owner can't take with them. I'm researching all ways to support this 8 yr old.

You all are killing me 🤦🏼♀️ Part of the problem is that you’ve acquired (I’m assuming “bought” for most of you since it’s highly unlikely you all found pure bred 8 week old puppies at shelters) the puppies when they’re ONLY 6-8 weeks old! This is why I hate breeders. They sell the puppies way too young. In order to become well rounded puppies, they really need to be left with their mother and siblings until they are twelve weeks old. The mother and siblings teach puppies (and kittens) SO many lessons in the 6-12 weeks age. It is not natural for puppies that young to ever be alone. They always have their siblings, even if the mother is away getting food or using the bathroom. The very first mistake most puppy owners make is getting the puppy too young. Hopefully that info will help someone.

The absolute best tip trying to crate train: just like Rachel said, make the crate Disneyland! Our current puppy's trainer recommended sneaking the best snack "jackpots" into the crate consistently and repetitively. The trainer also recommended to try and feed her meals in the crate too.
What we did for several weeks: everytime the dog was in another room, we'd sneak off to the other room that had the crate and leave special treats in it. The "sketchy crate" suddenly became the awesome "magical crate" with snacks coming from Narnia. And we did this every single time the dog was in another room. I also used some of the tricks Rachel recommended in one of her other crate training videos.
Our puppy still sleeps in bed with us (our choice), but she will go to her crate voluntarily to "chill out" now. I think this has helped her become a more "independent" dog.

Jedidah Fire my dog had horrible separation/ isolation anxiety when in her crate, and we first tried having her sleep in her crate. That didn’t work/ made it worse, so we had her sleep with us, and we worked on her crate anxiety. Once she finally figured out her crate was her safe haven, she’s now hangs outs, sleeps, chills and can be left alone for a long duration of time without worrying - and yet we still have her sleep with us. She is the definition of independent - it’s just different for every dog.
I just adopted an abused older dog that barks nonstop when I leave. Your tips are going to help get him crate trained. I'm the only one and work from home now so don't have a choice. And in the cold weather, its hard on the exercise thing. I throw his toys in the apartment.

Thank you for saying it’s going to be ok. I got a puppy in May & I took her everywhere with me at first. Now, I can’t leave her alone for two minutes without her screaming. My neighbors complained. I started taking her out on a long leash in the back yard to get more exercise & the neighbors complained about that. I can’t afford dog daycare at $200 a week. I need to leave her at home sometimes when I go out. I’m working on training, but she still cries when I go. This has gotten to be a nightmare.

Hey guys! Thank you for this video. It has helped, but Taft is uncontrollable when left alone. He's a 6 year old rescue who was given a bunch of meds to calm him down at the shelter. I have tried absolutely everything. From every kind of collar to indoor bark control devices, thundershirt, pheromones spray, music... Everything. What has worked wonders though! Is that I've recorded myself saying things I say to him all the time like "You're the best. I love you. Your doing great! Can you be quiet? Can you sit?" And loop it at intervals that get longer and longer. So it's a 15 hour long audio of me "talking to him". I don't know how it works, but it has stopped everything!!! Sometimes I will come home and he will be asleep!! He even started going to the crate on his own time. It has taken off a lot of stress in my life since animal control already stopped by twice to ask that I get his barking under control. It's hard, but not impossible.

What a great idea. I'm very glad I'm a cat person. I love dogs too, but cats are much less maintenance. I have 3 and one of them gets a bit of separation anxiety when my spouse leaves. As soon as I call her and she knows she's not alone, she's fine though and often comes for some couch time. I'm home all the time, so my cats are pretty spoiled.

My girl has severe separation anxiety and it’s so hard to work on fixing it, but I’m seeing improvements slowly!
I’ve been crating her each time I have to leave, leaving calmly, coming back calmly, freezing wet food in a Kong/Toppl to give her before I leave, bringing her on walks before I leave, walking her when I get home again, puzzles, etc.
It’s not even just her being alone either - if I’m somewhere else (like if I gave the leash to a friend on a walk and had to use the bathroom) and someone has her, she absolutely LOSES it. Shaking, crying, screaming, drooling, non-stop panting, refusing to drink water, etc. I think she definitely has isolation anxiety on top of it, since she does do better out of the crate when people are home, but she won’t really interact with anyone until I get home. She just stares out the window and waits 😭.
We adopted an adult dog who has started escaping the crate by breaking the wire and the door when ever we aren’t around so hopefully these tips will help her calm down

And that brought me to you. I'm SO glad my go-to dog training consultant failed me this time! You're awesome! Seeing your dog and their super chill countenance tells me you absolutely know what you're talking about! My boy makes me look like a genius because he picks up things so well and he's very consistent. I simply don't know what to do for him when he's alone in the crate or bedroom, so I've never dealt with it. Thank you sooooo much for this video, Rachel! I've been struggling with my rescue dog's separation anxiety for over a year now, and it's really worn me down. I paid so much money for doggie daycare, trainers, dog walkers, and fancy toys because I was desperate for help. Nothing seemed to work, but your point on mental stimulation in particular is what started to change things. My pup is a toy poodle, and she's very smart. I don't know why it never occurred to me that she really needed something to DO when I was at work. Sounds like such a straight-forward tip but I really never thought about it.. Thank you again!

We just moved a long distance into a house with new sounds, a huge yard with tons of activity, and a different climate. Our small dog is extremely smart, knows lots of tricks, has a dog park sized yard, and isolation anxiety now. The other 2 dogs are older, and chill out when we leave, but this one (a mini-schnoodle) has developed anxiety. This video helps, a lot. We don't want him to go on meds so hopefully what we are doing helps.
You should be a dog trainer 😄 I’ve heard more invaluable advice on this episode than I’ve had with my dog trainer! Was feeling at an all time low last night due to my two year old rescue poodle following me everywhere whilst trying to train her, “door is a bore” (normally she shows encouraging signs) but yesterday she followed me for two hours straight! Uber fail (for me and her). Then she eliminated twice in the hall (she does her business on walks only). Anyway long story short, found this incredibly insightful and optimistic thanks!

I think my doggy has separation anxiety she’s always been super attached to my mum, I have the job of staying with her when mum leaves and when mum leaves she SCREAMS she screams like she does when she’s in pain. It’s awful and heartbreaking, thank you so much for making this video I’ll try these techniques when she’s calmed a bit.

I started teaching my rescue pup, new tricks & exercise for his separation anxiety... so far, they are working!!! I felt so horrible for having adopted a dog that I didn't know wasn't crate trained due to his separation anxiety. I began those tips, and there have been no more accidents! I know it's only been a few weeks, but I think we may have finally turned that corner! So even if we haven't, thank you for your help!!!

Hi! Chihuahua's are extremely clever. You can get interactive toys and puzzle games. Nina Ottossan has different level puzzles fit for every age and breed of dog. I highly recommend you check those out. Kongs, snuffle mats, lick mats are other types of mental enrichment toys/ tools you can get.

As other have mentioned already, I really appreciate you being so nice to us - giving us confidence, telling us it's okay if we aren't yet there were we want to be, telling us you believe in us. I just got a new puppy - and I wanted a dog all my life and had so many plans and thought I would for sure do everything right because I had informed myself so much. I basically thought I would be a really good dog owner and trainer right from the beginning... Arrogant, I know. Thing is, I researched so much about dog training... But now I have a puppy. Who can't focus so much yet, just got separated from mom and siblings, etc etc. And actually isn't really food motivated and not motivated by most toys either (with the exception of plushies and... shoes. Which she loves.) And sometimes I just don''t know what to do. Now I am watching all your videos, and actually start to realize that I have to go step by step. I can't expect to really train a lot of commands in the first month I think. Instead I have to focus on potty training, crate training, probably walking on the leash a bit.... And yeah, leaving her alone, even if it's just for a few seconds. She will cry and try to bite through the crate even when I am just leaving the room and she can still hear me, even if I give her something to chew, even if she is exercised, fed, and tired. Only when she has fallen asleep could I leave, but I think she would panic when she would wake up without me being there, so we have to train that while she is awake.

As a first time dog owner (Bicolor Workline GSD). I am very grateful that I have this feeling in my heart that I follow to solve issues with my dog. I have been doing this before I looked up the video. The reason I looked up this video is because I wanted to double check if I am doing things alright (Obviously not exactly like this). One example would be the room and jumping on you thingy. I would have my GSD in the basement for an hour, then open the door to let him in. He used to be jumpy. I would just look at him and study him. I then understood what I needed to do. I would hug him and tell him that I will never abandon him. I did that over the course of 3 days. The following days I did it different. When I would open the door from the basement he would be hyper but I did not acknowledge him. I would also turn my back so he won't jump at me. He started calming down. After he calmed down I will then acknowledge him with a light pat in his head. This lasted about a week and a half. Now he does not jump at me or goes destructo mode when I am away. Now the only time he jumps is when my father ask my big pupper for a kiss on the cheek everytime he comes home from work. May all of you reach new bonds with your babies.

The beginning almost made me cry because I'm a student and even if I have my parents here, they only help with the dog medically or getting the food, but not training, which is the problem for me. We just rescued another Rottie yesterday who is 2 days shy of a year old and the “isolation anxiety” term I think nailed it on the head. It’s also not a term I’ve heard yet. I’ve done the Disneyland crate thing but she wants me to watch her or go on every ride with her at this Disneyland. Lol
Her frozen Kong, if I leave the room just for a moment she stops and goes bananas. As soon as I get back she wants to show me her awesomeness.
It’s hard when she’s still learning a name…being tethered when outside of the crate due to her reaction to the other Rottie (who outweighs her by 30 lbs but is so relaxed she’s a Godsend), so the tips are helpful and I think will be more helpful when she’s allowed

One point of departure, however, is there needs to be more of an emphasis among content creators in dog training that crate training isn’t a end all be all for dog owners.
Crate training may be effective for potty training, giving a dog a safe space, and ensuring comfort for both the owner and pet when leaving.
For context, I had and trained dogs growing up, and we never used a crate. But when I started with a new dog (larger, very active Maltese) as an independent owner, I thought I’d give it a go.
Turns out, it was actually when I got rid of the crate and instead created an unconfined comfort space (just a really comfy bed dog area with toys) that I saw all the difference. My dog was anxious even for seconds when in the crate (chewing at gate, panting, barking, and whining), and I tried slowly increasing time in it with no luck. I chalked this up to normal puppy resistance but it was the confinement that seemed to worsen the anxiety. I also did all of the open door crate things as well with the pricey Diggs crate I bought. My dog would just find ways to escape from inside even when I was just around the corner for a few minutes. This was even after long walks, exercise, and mental activities.
That said, I followed to a T all of the crate training tips, including the ones Rachel and others offer like normalizing the crate, playing games in and around it, feeding all meals in the crate, changing its location and slowly increasing time away, from day one. I have come to accept my dog is just not a crate dog.
I’ve since had pet trainers I’m working with confirm what I suspected: The crate isn’t for every dog. I say that not to discredit the idea of crate training when away to curb separation anxiety because my experience is anecdotal. But now I leave him in his comfort area casually (no goodbye or tell-tells that I’m leaving), and come back to a dog that is happy to see me but is politely sitting or relaxing in his area. The difference - not making him feel confined to the area to leave him in and giving him room to walk around a little when he knows mom is coming back. Moreover, trying to leave your dog in a crate and not giving them an opportunity to spread their legs and walk around an open space has always felt a bit cruel to me. Again, I know for larger dogs people might want to use the crate to avoid destructive behavior but I had large dogs prone to those behaviors previously too. The crate isn’t a panacea for those behaviors - it’s figuring out the root cause for those behaviors, not trying to eliminate the opportunities. I’m a big believer in giving dogs the chance to make mistakes and learn from their owners. Same goes for potty training as well.
The key takeaway concerns the necessity of experimenting and really paying attention to what works and what doesn’t. As opposed to spending money, time, and energy on a perceived solution that isn’t a good fit because it’s the popular “responsible dog owner” thing to do. There’s an industry around the crate and endorsements galore to consider as well. Trying different things to curb separation anxiety like behavior is better than trying to stick it out and keep at it simply to make something work which is not a good fit.

I’ve tried literally everything suggested on so many different videos. One thing I think is key considering my high anxiety dog is asleep for the past 30 minutes of me being gone (FaceTiming), it’s only going to be a solid session of mental and physical stimulation beforehand. No going in and out for 3 5 10 seconds. No giving treats. No toy. No music. No additional dog. None of that extra stuff. As someone that also deals with high anxiety, anxiety requires A LOT of energy. It’s literally the same thing with us humans. If you have a solid workout and study. Do you feel anxiety at the end of it or are you too drained to care what’s going on around you?

He loves his create.
I walk him about 1.5 hours (3 walks) per day
He freaks out when I leave.
He develops diarrhea when left alone, after being dropped off, and if we have to get on the freeway!

I have an anxious rescue who we adopted on mothers day. Our vet recommended probiotics for the anxious pooping. They've helped but when our routine changes in the slightest she has accidents. Have you tried fortiflora for the anxious diarrhea? Also you're probably heckin' nervous on the highway which is making the dog nervous on the highway. Does the doggo feel secure? Idk I buckle my dogs harness to the seatbelt so she can lay down or sit up and look out the window.
I think if my dog were more stressed like yours I'd medicate them. I'm on medication for my anxiety so I can understand a dog needing that help too. Just a random passerby's two cents I am not a professional, hope you get your dog the help they need!

Cesar Milan has great videos on how to work on separation anxiety. It is normal for a dog to want to be with the pack leader all the time. If they are having trouble with leaving practice his video.
She mentions it shortly in this video a similar method, but She misses parts and examples.
With a dog that has so much trouble with separation I would recommend his video instead of this.
My Joy Unleashed , wow. I’m having the exact same experience with my new lab. I’m also his 3rd home. He has horrible separation anxiety, but loves his crate. He has naps in it, and is perfect at night sleeping in it, but when he’s home alone, he freaks out and actually tries to escape and just hurts himself. Thank you so much for this! I have a lot to think about and implement. We've had a new pup at 8 weeks, he's attached to me and I find it so difficult to leave him as he cries. I try not to leave him to the point he's screaming and just come back when he's quiet as if nothing's happened. I watched another one of your videos about limiting their environment so we decided to put a playpen around his crate with plenty of toys. I feel so mean as he had free roam of the kitchen for 5 days but we need to build his confidence of being alone as I will be returning to work soon and I've been finding it really tough having him glued to me or trying to chew things he shouldn't, as a pup would 😂 it's day one of the pen, he cries, jumps up and barks occasionally when I'm with him but will play with his toys/sleep. Just breaks my heart when he whines, I've cried a lot 💔 I'm going to slowly move myself around the pen and leave for short bursts. If you have anymore tips I will happily take all I can get or if I'm doing something wrong please tell me, I want the best for him and feel like a terrible mum 😥 ❤️

I'm planning to get a dog so I've been doing a lot of research on what to expect and how to deal with problems etc, and for cases where the dog's separation anxiety is a serious problem a really effective option is a Vibrating Collar.
It'll have a remote control and/or one with a volume sensor to detect when the dog is barking. Basically it'll just do a short quick Vibration of varying intensities, it doesn't hurt the dog in any way and it actually emulates what a mother dog would do with a young pup when she nips one around the neck, which is just a way of communicating 'This behaviour is not okay.'

I am in the UK we've got a 5 month puppy rescued, she spent the first 5 months of her life with other dogs. She just goes absolutely bananas in the crate all night long, despite being happy to go in it during the day. Its as soon as the door shuts, even if we are right there. The same if we just leave the room. Its currently absolutely exhausting. we've currently temporarily put the crate training to the side and have made our house puppy proof and are practicing distance etc.

I got a puppy back in March, luckily I have been home with him since quarantine. I am having MAJOR struggles crate training him probably because I am home with him 24/7. Im trying your tips and very slowly see little progress, but he still cries a lot especially when we have to put him in the cage (when going for errands). He isn't in the crate for more than 1 to 2 hours at this time. He freely goes in the crate and will sniff it but freaks out pretty much as soon as i leave the room (crate is closed). We just started a training class, I am hoping your videos and his training will help me help him be successful. Its a ton of work on my end, and I think most people don't understand that its most likely the human needs to set them up for success.

I relate to everything you said about creating an overly dependent dog. I got my dog Atticus when I was 22 right out of college and moved out. Got an apartment and was with him always. He has issues with excessive barking when I left and I eventually got a boyfriend, moved into a house and he was better bc there were more people around usually…after 5 years we just broke up, so I’m moving back into an apartment with him and I’m so nervous the behavior will come back. Going try nose work and the training but I’m so nervous for neighbors to complain bc it’s going to take time for him to adapt again. 😭

With crates I tend to put a couple of their meals a day in a kong and freeze it. If feeding kibble soak it then fill. It's part of my pups Disney distraction. The freezing also helps with teething. While they are occupied vary it. Stay in the room, pop out the room for longer and longer. Go for a shower etc. Slowly build it up while they are happily munching.
Set them up for success though. Get them slowly used to the crate and do some training, play or exercise before practicing crate or alone time.
Stay positive, you'll get there. Go slow and take a deep breath if it gets hard. Y'all can do this!

I believe I caused my pups separation anxiety. The mental stimulatjon has helped in tiring him out, however it does take more time in the morning to tire him out!
I’ve been watching all of your videos. I found you once I got a puppy foster. It’s funny, I’ve always had dog fosters but this is my first puppy and I’m learning so much from you! Thank you so much. You should make a video a example of what of environment you male for your dogs as how to keep your house clean and the dogs happy and obedient
1. Spread the love with other members of the house
2. Teach them new tricks
3. Don’t make a fuss about coming back
4. Make the room disneyland (feed them, tricks, etc.)
5. Practice random opening the door, going up the stairs, so they don’t associate that with you leaving.
6. Frozen stuffed kong or hiding things around the room
7. The anxiety is probably your fault

I have a Velcro jack Russell puppy and I’ve been reinforcing the behaviour. I’m watching him and his litter ate is away and they both are like Velcro with Horner. This puppy. May become mine so I have to learn this before I take him home. Excellent video. I have two floors and he can’t get up and down stairs yet.

Hey! I haven't commented in a while! I needed this so much. ever since I commented last I got 2 puppies! I have 4 dogs and 3 out of them 4 have separation anxiety and I've tried everything even giving them so many tricks and letting them out in the huge open grass more than their potty needs (even more than what I used to and I used to let them out about every 4 hours even during the night than my mom would do it while I was at school but than I started doing it every 3 hours and I was so tired) and I gave them new toys every week and I left them in a crate for seconds or minutes at a time but they would hate it so much. you posted this video (to me) yesterday and I tried the people method and it worked wonders. My mom stays home and the dogs aren't as comfortable with her since I feed the dogs and walk them and all that because I like the responsibility but my mom gave them their meals yesterday and today and now when I leave for school they aren't crying and screaming. I'll update to see if it gets better or worse.

I currently have a one year old maltipoo that I got when he was 3 months old. For most of his life he has spent being with me in quarantine during covid. He has pretty bad separation anxiety and hates whenever I leave him alone or with other people, even my parents who he loves. It’s like if I am not there in the room with him he will never be happy or content. He follows me everywhere I go, even to the bathroom. He’s been attached to me the second I got him. I tried crate training him but after a month I gave up and just let him sleep with me. I’ve definitely spoiled him rotten which has made the separation anxiety worse. Does anyone else have a dog that you’ve had since a puppy suffering from separation anxiety?? He’s never been abandoned and he knows that I will come back for him, but he still barks and howls like crazy whenever I leave him. He doesn’t do any destructive behavior like chew or defecate but he will howl and cry for about 15-20 minutes after I leave. He also has a problem with being independent and spending time alone by himself even when I am in the house. How can I help improve his independence?

Rachel.... why didn’t I find you when we first adopted our 1 year old black lab almost a year ago??? He was originally adopted before but the family brought him back to the shelter and he has huge separation anxiety I believe from that. He’s turning 2 soon and he’s just now starting to become comfortable by himself. We also had to move twice in the one year we’ve had him so far. So I know that also played a part with getting him used to our first home with just me and my husband, and now we are currently living with my parents and we are soon gonna move again... sighhh I know we’re probably stressing him but it’s things we can’t help. But we are here for the long run with him and I hope he’s patient with all these changes. Soon we will have our own home again to let him get used to. Thanks for all the tips!

What would you suggest for this scenario..
60 yr old (no friends or family close by) living alone with two dogs (13, 8) that have not been separated since the 8 yr old was 2 wks of age. Owner spends 99% at home.
The 13 yr old won't last another 12 mths. Crate never used.
Hints, tips and advice to transition the 8 yrs old into being left alone once the older dog has gone. There will be times where the owner can't take with them.
I'm researching all ways to support this 8 yr old.
