Unfortunately, a lot of my footage was squished while capturing it. 75% of my playthrough was recorded like this. I tried to keep it to a minimum in the video but, unfortunately, had to use some of it. The game doesn't support widescreen, but it may have been recorded that way but still squished into 4:3. The lesson learned is to check all of my footage after recording.
Maybe it was just my editing skills but Im not sure if I would be able to make it look good and keep it at it’s proper aspect ratio since the game is not meant to be displayed at 16:9. I’ll take any tips to help though just in case it happens again
If anything, in most video editing programs there is a way to change the scaling on both the height and width of video clips, could be useful for situations like this?
@@campxbox Is it possible that this game _does_ support widescreen, but the HUD just isn't optimized for it? Both the 3D and HUD stuff look too narrow as shown here (in 4:3), but when I stretch the picture out to 16:9, only the 3D looks correct, while the HUD is too wide. This was fairly common back then, as I recall. Even more fun was when the 3D rendering was also in semi/pseudo-widescreen, so the widescreen mode would always look a little off, regardless of your TV's settings.

Do you guys want to know the most insane glitch ever in this game? If you go to your garage, select a car you haven’t unlocked, unplug your controller, plug it back in, and then leave the garage… you drive out with that car. I had it on Xbox so I cant attest to the other consoles… but it’s kinda game breaking that you can start with the Saleen
This was one of those games I rented more than once as a kid. Before I played MC: LA to me this was THE definitive recreation of LA in a video game form. I do miss those days
As someone who lived & worked in the LA area for decades, they did do a fairly good job creating the main streets & freeways of Los Angeles. This game can be quite challenging & rage quit inducing at time. It is like mixing "Scar Face The World is Yours" with "Midnight Club"! The most authentic take on LA streets is "Midnight Club LA Complete Edition", it is more accurate than "GTA-5", as good as it is in that regard.
I got it for ps2 and it was good enough for me to not forget about it. The visuals, music and overall vibe of the game was really good at the time. I can look back at it with good memories, it was also around the time i got hooked to midtown madness 2 on pc.
I still have an original Xbox and it works very well, I've never played this game, and it seems like a good game for its time.. remember midnight club Los Angeles

4:15 is one of the funniest cutscenes ive seen on that generation. It's no "this cave is not a natural formation" but the way he dumps the coins out of his hat to punctuate his bad ass line delivery. Just masterful
I have the Playstation 2 version of L.A. Rush. It has a reasonably good "greatest hits/theme park" type map of Los Angeles, albeit with a large, empty area in the middle around the L.A. River where neighbourhoods like Vernon and Huntington Park should be (also the game map version of the L.A. River bends west where it bends east in real life Los Angeles). It's far from the most complete map of Los Angeles, even for a 6th gen game (the largest L.A. map in a 6th gen game would have to be the one in True Crime: Streets of L.A. with a still-fairly astonishing 1:1 recreation of 240 square miles of Los Angeles) and I definitely appreciate the licensed cars. However, the entry fees and the lack of a restart option in races, forcing me to have to grind through the same starter races over and over again to earn money just to be able to re-enter the later races, pretty much kills any fun the game might otherwise have provided. If I'm in the mood for 6th generation open world arcade city street racing, Midnight Club 3: Dub Edition Remix is what I choose over L.A. Rush nearly every time.
San Francisco Rush 2049 looks really nice on the Dreamcast from the Video Footage!! Also I don't understand sometimes why Racing Games have to be a Story. For me Gameplay is all that Matters and that I have fun with it.
I played this game on PC. 💻 Man I spent many hours playing through the story mode. The licensed cars and music really had a lasting effect on me. The graphics were good enough. L.A. Rush will always have a special place in my heart ♥

I remember I was gifted a Xbox from a friend that was more fortunate than me in 2010. He only had this game and midnight club dub edition remix. One of my best memories involved this game I’m so happy to see someone play it!
I found this game in case at my retro game store for less than $10 so I picked it up being a midnight club fan and I was super surprised when I started it up. This is definitely a better game than what most people would assume looking at it and I’ve always loved the “rush” games even if this one is very different
When I first learned about L.A Rush, I thought it was a new IP by Midway to complete agains the Urban racing arcade scenes that was at its peak 2004-2005. It took me an embarrassingly long time to realize this was part of the Rush series because of the more futuristic setting and cars. It’s an curious time capsule of a very different time when everything in entertainment was getting edgy and dark. The slow down effects also reminded me of the Flatout series too because of the car physics with the debris which I suspect was also an inspiration. Regardless, if you feel the pacing of L.A Rush was a little too slow for your liking, at least Arcade Treasures 3 has the old racing titles which is very nice to have!
I know a lot people ain’t got that techno bug in them, but I always shoot for the techno tracks in old games. Theres just something special about those styles of electronic music to me, so if I’m being honest I’d be that weirdo who would turn off the hip hop and crank up whatever techno beats are available to me
I had this game on PS2 and remember enjoying it but thinking it very much felt like a Midnight Club knockoff. I loved the vehicle roster but also really hated the crash cam. Regarding the vehicle customization: I thought the preset WCC upgrades were cool and appropriate for a game with such an arcade feel. It also felt like an homage to something from an old school coin-op arcade racer. Plus, there were a ton of WILD secret cars you could unlock that were designed by the devs (and possibly WCC) instead of being licensed vehicles. Not perfect, but a fun game and definitely worth checking out.
Edit: LA definitely has the traffic lol but considering how huge it is with multiple distinct regions, i'm sure there are places with medium amounts of traffic. I think its road infrastructure is a bit more modern than some other large cities without the infamous gridlock that some have. Ive only driven around it a little bit so hopefully people who've spent more time driving day to day can chime in on the degree of realism presented. The gaming era where soundtracks had like Xzibhit or whatever, Luda-Chris but also POD and Disturbed in same game
This game is the closest thing to burnout Paradise you're going to get on a whatever generation the Xbox PlayStation GameCube was. That being said, this game has a great open world large map with some hilarious cheats the one to make the traffic move at 10 times speed is funny as hell 😅
Having played the N64 games, this game seems like a big departure from those but also like the proper evolution the series would take during that period

There is a glitch to drive locked cars, idk I still remember it. Something like unplugging the controller at the same as time as selecting it from the garage. on PS2 at least
Got to give props to the crashes and how much you can destroy you car because now days that never happens in racing games. Also I thought if you hold down the x button during crashes it plays out normally without the slow motion if I’m not mistaken.
Btw is this video part of your "obscure titles" thing? I voted in recent poll and saw that was by far the most popular category that viewers chose. I personally went for DLC but i love stuff like this that also includes the cultural background of the game as well as the developers. Its all very neat stuff

great racing, very harcdore, made by Pitbull, it’s in fact Test Drive 8, it would have named such if Atari didn’t sell it to Midway (because it might affect to Driver 3 which was less technological but major title) i talked to game developer it had to connection to previous RUSH series, just Midway had no other race titles in box just graphics is outdated even for its time, thanks ps2

The guy in that video was loading the game through the PS2's USB 1.1 port which is way slower than the disc drive. That doesn't happen if you use any other method (real or burned disc, hard drive, or memory card to SD adapter)

Unfortunately no, this game is not a gem, it is one of several games of average/poor quality that bankrupted Midway. The physics are bad, most cars have almost the same handling with no differences, except the SUVs which are a little heavier but still easy. The physics of the jump are poorly applied, most of the time your car hits the bumpers on the ground, causing a sudden change in angle, making it land upside down or on its side. The story is very forgettable, the characters have no charisma, there are few cutscenes that explain their story. The AI is unpleasant, especially for the inefficient police officers crashing everywhere, being easy to escape and the voice actor seemed bored when it came to dubbing the lines. The game does not allow you to choose the colors of your car or customize them, as they have pre-selected colors and kits in the West Coast Customs garages without letting the player choose. The lack of creativity makes this game a simple imitation of Midnight Club, there is nothing new that makes it interesting from other open world racing games, Midway tried to surf the open world racing game trend of the 2000s by deforming the essence from the Rush franchise, which displeased those who liked the previous games. Also, I didn't mention the bad PSP port and the disastrous PC port full of technical bugs, graphics and the DRM that can destroy Windows if you try to use piracy methods to play games. The biggest points of the game were the graphic quality, damage to cars and the layout of the Los Angeles map that included the Long Beach part and the port which rarely appeared on the others games.

I remember playing the demo and _hating_ this. Both because it's a bad Rush game, and because it's a bad racer compared to its contemporaries - I'm mature enough to look at games through that lens. I'll defend Ridge Racer Unbound as a good racer, but a bad _Ridge Racer_ game, y'know? KOF 2006 is a fun fighting game, but a not-so-great _King of Fighters_ game, etc. LA Rush *could* have been a good racer while failing as a Rush game.... but it really isn't. I gave the final game a go before typing this on my modded Xbox and it's just a solid and generic racer at best. I can totally see why it's largely forgotten. It freakin' stinks compared to the Burnout titles in terms of control responsiveness/driving model and crash modeling (among other things), and it fails compared to Midnight Club 3 and others as an open world driving game. Not to mention, it just doesn't feel like Rush; it abandons the fun/crazy vibe for the generic and me-too (at the time) vibe of any other "gangsta" or "hip hop" nonsense car culture, vaguely ripping off Fast & Furious. LA also kinda sucks as a racing destination, I dunno - maybe it's just me, but I've never played a racer set in LA that's truly fantastic (sorry Midnight Club LA). The city planners who built that place just didn't have to worry about fun racing course designs (it's a problem for any game that opts to use a real location versus an original design). It's also a bad solution here to use a Crazy Taxi style arrow; again, you compare it to Midnight Club and NFS Carbon and better open world racers that put up big ole lit up "arrow walls" to make the courses much easier to read at high speeds and lets you keep your eyes on the road. I'm glad you enjoyed it, but... I just don't think it's up to snuff in any way. I would love to see a new entry or spiritual successor though; I'm sure the ex-Midway/Atari devs at Raw Thrills could *freakin' kill it* just like they did when they revived the Cruis'n series with Blast a few years ago (and Hydro Thunder with "H2Overdrive" before that). Maybe it wouldn't have the Rush name, but how about reviving that Hot Rod Rebels IP instead? I never heard of that, and looking into it after you mentioned it here just makes me mad that it got canned, lol.

@@campxboxlooks like it was 16:9 for 3d stuff and 4:3 for the UI, maybe just forcing 4:3 via the Xbox bios would be the best of both worlds?

L.A. RUSH is one of the ONLY open world racing games with LICENSED cars, upgrading (even though it's extremely mild) and GOOD visual damage.
Midnight club Los Angeles did all better, except for the limited damage, but still are decent.

i don't know why but a lot of racers look a generation ahead of other genres in terms of graphical fidelity imo.

The best I can think of is Jade Empire that is an action rpg with romance subplots.

The guy in that video was loading the game through the PS2's USB 1.1 port which is way slower than the disc drive. That doesn't happen if you use any other method (real or burned disc, hard drive, or memory card to SD adapter)

Unfortunately no, this game is not a gem, it is one of several games of average/poor quality that bankrupted Midway.
The physics are bad, most cars have almost the same handling with no differences, except the SUVs which are a little heavier but still easy.
The physics of the jump are poorly applied, most of the time your car hits the bumpers on the ground, causing a sudden change in angle, making it land upside down or on its side. The story is very forgettable, the characters have no charisma, there are few cutscenes that explain their story.
The AI is unpleasant, especially for the inefficient police officers crashing everywhere, being easy to escape and the voice actor seemed bored when it came to dubbing the lines.
The game does not allow you to choose the colors of your car or customize them, as they have pre-selected colors and kits in the West Coast Customs garages without letting the player choose.
The lack of creativity makes this game a simple imitation of Midnight Club, there is nothing new that makes it interesting from other open world racing games, Midway tried to surf the open world racing game trend of the 2000s by deforming the essence from the Rush franchise, which displeased those who liked the previous games.
Also, I didn't mention the bad PSP port and the disastrous PC port full of technical bugs, graphics and the DRM that can destroy Windows if you try to use piracy methods to play games. The biggest points of the game were the graphic quality, damage to cars and the layout of the Los Angeles map that included the Long Beach part and the port which rarely appeared on the others games.

I remember playing the demo and _hating_ this. Both because it's a bad Rush game, and because it's a bad racer compared to its contemporaries - I'm mature enough to look at games through that lens. I'll defend Ridge Racer Unbound as a good racer, but a bad _Ridge Racer_ game, y'know? KOF 2006 is a fun fighting game, but a not-so-great _King of Fighters_ game, etc. LA Rush *could* have been a good racer while failing as a Rush game.... but it really isn't. I gave the final game a go before typing this on my modded Xbox and it's just a solid and generic racer at best. I can totally see why it's largely forgotten.
It freakin' stinks compared to the Burnout titles in terms of control responsiveness/driving model and crash modeling (among other things), and it fails compared to Midnight Club 3 and others as an open world driving game. Not to mention, it just doesn't feel like Rush; it abandons the fun/crazy vibe for the generic and me-too (at the time) vibe of any other "gangsta" or "hip hop" nonsense car culture, vaguely ripping off Fast & Furious. LA also kinda sucks as a racing destination, I dunno - maybe it's just me, but I've never played a racer set in LA that's truly fantastic (sorry Midnight Club LA). The city planners who built that place just didn't have to worry about fun racing course designs (it's a problem for any game that opts to use a real location versus an original design). It's also a bad solution here to use a Crazy Taxi style arrow; again, you compare it to Midnight Club and NFS Carbon and better open world racers that put up big ole lit up "arrow walls" to make the courses much easier to read at high speeds and lets you keep your eyes on the road.
I'm glad you enjoyed it, but... I just don't think it's up to snuff in any way. I would love to see a new entry or spiritual successor though; I'm sure the ex-Midway/Atari devs at Raw Thrills could *freakin' kill it* just like they did when they revived the Cruis'n series with Blast a few years ago (and Hydro Thunder with "H2Overdrive" before that). Maybe it wouldn't have the Rush name, but how about reviving that Hot Rod Rebels IP instead? I never heard of that, and looking into it after you mentioned it here just makes me mad that it got canned, lol.
