The first time I heard Opeth, I went on an Opeth binge for almost a year. That's an entire year of listening to Opeth almost exclusively. And seeing someone getting awestruck by the ingenuity of Opeth for the first time again brings back so many memories. You should try more of their songs, try the Damnation album, don't skip a single song. They're mostly acoustic based and very artistic.

Welcome to Opeth....they stand alone at the junction of many genres... Metal, death metal, jazz, rock. Progressive music at it's best.
This is a more subdued track for them, as they have some 10 -15 minute songs that incorporate clean and harsh singing ( Mikael sings both styles seemlessly). Ghost Of Perdition will get the most requests.

This album Watershed (which contains Porcelain Heart) is the last album Åkerfeldt used death growls and he already decreased those parts a lot. So if you wanna hear Opeth I fell in love with I'd recommend to check out Blackwater Park (the whole album, it's just a masterpiece). Also Ghost of Perdition, Reverie/Harlequin Forest and The Grand Conjuration from Ghost Reveries, any track on Still Life (especially Godhead's Lament, Moonlapse Vertigo and Face of Melinda) and any track on Deliverance. Damnation is more acoustic and clean vocal album which has very beautiful songs in it, but no clear death metal elements. And Opeth's production since 2005/2008 has been more progressive rock than metal. But Blackwater Park, the whole album, is the thing.

You should know that the clip version is the short version of the song. 5 minutes versus 8 minutes for the full song. Next time you react to Opeth, it would be great if you could pick a song that exploit their Death Metal style a little. Akerfeldt growls were some of the best I've heard (until he stopped using them in the studio after the album on wich Porcelain Heart is). You could also react to their softer side that is very haunting and beautiful, equaly awesome but very different (as found on the Damnation album)! Listening to Opeth is a musical journey ! Thanks for the video :) !

Opeth...they will take you into deep, deep waters. You only see them in a pretty mellow and somber mood here. While their songs almost always have that dramatic ebb and flow of intensity, they have a few more "gears" you don't see in this song. For something where they go full-bore, maybe try Demon of the Fall.

Honestly, this was a pretty good one to start with. Opeth's prog elements can be a bit much to a first time listener. If you need another straight forward tune that kicks ass, Sorceress is great. That said, they're a phenomenal band, no matter what song you decide to hear next.

I don't listen to a lot of Opeth, only because their subject matter falls outside my scope of concerns (if that makes sense). That being said, how can you describe with absolution, that emotion you felt at the end, without walking through the things that brought you there. Progressive music is amazing, if you can take the time to listen to it.

Do appreciate you putting out that you would be willing to talk to anybody who needs to for suicidal thoughts. You are right it’s better to talk to somebody that you aren’t close to or someone you won’t get that close too. Family and friends honestly believe that they know you better then you do yourself and will tell you it’s a funk and it’ll pass. Somebody else understands this problem and it’s great. Thank you so much for that

    “Opeth setting themselves apart”.
Bro, you don’t know the half of it.
They’re a once in a lifetime band and take a while to get used to but, they are something special and a major influence to so many others.
Jinjer’s Pisces is a prime example. If you get around to Ne Obliviscaris, that’s another band with very heavy Opeth influences.
    Definitely check out more Opeth.

You should check out something like Harlequin Forest from them. This song was all clean vocals. You need to see one where they take the same type of journey, but have VERY different vocal styles mixed together. It adds textures unlike anyone else. This song was definitely good, but it was kind of like dipping your toes into the kiddie pool. Now dive into some deeper water. ;) Good stuff.

    White Cluster
    Deliverance
    Reverie/Harlequin Forest
    Ghost Of Perdition
    Blackwater Park
The Night And The Silent Water
The Mist In She Was Standing
    The Lotus Eater
Any song from " The Roundhouse Tapes "
