Milwaukee M12 Drill vs Screwdriver vs Impact - Why Would You Need All Three?
Вставка
- Опубліковано 21 лис 2021
- I have been a user of the M12 tool line for a number of years now. I recently picked up the Milwaukee M12 Screwdriver on sale at Home Depot for the holiday deals. It seemed like a tool I didn't "need" but could use. I decided to check them out head to head to see how they drive fasteners differently. The Milwaukee M12 Drill compared to the Milwaukee M12 Impact surprised me quite a bit. I think the impact needs beefing up (probably why there is a much better fuel version). The M12 Screwdriver definitely drives screws but I think the M12 drill could do it just as effectively with as much control from the clutch as the screwdriver can. But really, at the end of the day, who couldn't use an extra tool for one purpose or another? I think it was just cool to put these tools head to head and show how they operate differently.

It was great hearing Joe Rogan give tool comparisons! Seriously thanks for the video!
Dude sounds nothing like joe
I was thinking the same thing 😂
Kinda
It kinda does though
I would been sold i he had said " it's bonkers!"
Cool. I am a cabinetmaker and use the screwdriver for cabinetry hardware. For example, I set the clutch to lowest setting and go over all kictchen cabinet hardware to snug it up. It has the perfect torque and speed for small fasteners.
I’m finding it more and more useful all the time. Great comment! Thanks for watching.
Good review...I have both the fuel and the brushed screwdriver both are great but for light and delicate fixings the brushed version is by far the best.
Nice.@@wolfmanxxx100
Single speed screwdrivers are also the lightest weight too.
Hi, I just wanna to give you a shout that even though you were puzzled about results you’ve proven very important thing. Because torsional forces for longer screws the better is to use constant torque tool (drill) for nuts impacts is the way to go. It’s difference between oscillating torsions an constant. That’s why in longer screws the head come off.
Great vid
I’ve been using the drill and impact for a year now and I’m pretty impressed. I was tired of my wife bringing my drill in from the shop for random stuff and having to look for it for 15 mins in the house when I needed it out there so I got these for household stuff. Honestly, I took the impact out to the shop after I used it to fix the bench swing on my back porch 😆 I like these.
Thanks, helpful presentation. The screwdriver is more capable & stronger than I expected.
Surprised me too honestly.
Love the screwdriver. Use it almost daily. It can drive 3" deck screws no problem.
Doing maintenance work... Everything from sheetrocking to plumbing, boilers, furnaces, electric work.
Others have mentioned the torque settings. That's awesome but even the cheapest drills have a torque clutch.
Bought a $50 version of the screwdriver from Runnings. Gears stripped out... Paid $100 for the Milwaukee screwdriver; it came with a case, two batteries and a charger. Ten years later it's still my favorite tool after the M12 Flood light.
Hackzaw,, floodlight, screwdriver. Most used tools. Have many of 18 and 12 tools.
In HVAC I always have the screwdriver in my tool bag. Mine is 12 years old on original batteries and has been beat to death but keeps working. I've left it in freezers, gotten it soaking wet and used it to drive in so many 3/8 head self tappers that I had to put it in the freezer to cool it off. When brand new with new batteries it jerked right out of my hand tightening a bolt down because I wasn't expecting the torque. I love the size and it fits perfect in my tool bag. Also the clutch setting helps from stripping screw holes. I have some of the quick detach drill bits for smaller jobs but also keep a drill in the truck. The max RPM's are much lower than the drill so it isn't great for drilling.
Interesting comparison, and answered some of my questions as a power tool newbie. The brushed Milwaukee drill and screwdriver seem to be really great tools, and I imagine things really pick up with the Fuel range when you start looking at impact drivers... I have picked up some tools in the m12 line and I'm really happy I stumbled onto them with blind luck. :) Thank you for your content!
Thanks for watching and the comment. Good luck with your tools!
They are great tools for the price , power, value. Reliable
I’m happy with them no high expectations. They all have there place in the tool box for certain jobs. Low torque stuff these are perfect for or running up bolts or nuts.
I'd definitely agree, they all have their place, the drill and the impact could cover all of them though, but nothing wrong with having a third. Its good tool for sure!
I bought a Black & Decker powered screwdriver and it quickly became my favourite power tool. Great for quick jobs and assembling furniture. About to buy the Milwaukee 2494-22 for a light duty drill and impact drill but I hear they are very capable tools.
I bought one of those m12 drills from ace hardware maybe 6 years ago. Except it wasn’t the drill. Someone had returned the set with a screwdriver in its place. I was kinda bummed at first. But I began to appreciate the utility of a drill with a quick change chuck. However I’ve since acquired so many other drills and impact drivers that I really only bring the screwdriver out if I’m dealing with lots of different sized drill bits and different type screws, just so I can have something loaded into many different tools instead of changing the drills or bits out
The value is you get these in packages at a reasonable price. I have all 3, and love them for basic around the house stuff. I have my Dewalt XR and flexvolt for thr big stuff, but these 3 are invaluable for simple stuff. The price point is great. I think I got the screwdriver for $68 with a battery and charger during black friday.
As a mechanic, i have all 3 of these. They all serve their purpose. I use the impact the most, the drill the least. For the cost, i think they're great.
Good review, I have the m18 Fuel driver and impact. Just picked up the M12 screwdriver because for $69 on sale….why not…haha. It diffently has a spot in arsenal. I keep it on hand for inside work, and while yes , a screwdriver is fine, the M12 cordless is just way more fun. Plus for assembly its great, I just built wardrobe with maybe 70 star headed screws and having a light very maneuverable tool like the M12 really sped up build. Plus the torque is surprisingly super strong, it could easily be driver in a pinch.
Definitely a good tool. M18 stuff is the best. I no longer have M18 tools as I am out of the trade but no doubt they are probably the best tools a consumers money can buy. Thanks for watching and commenting.
I think there was definitely a difference in the density of the wood, and that's why the impact was having such a tough time towards the top of that board. The other night I was installing stuff with my wife and she was trying to use my Bauer impact and telling me it was "way to big" and "way to noisy" and "why isn't it just a normal drill" which makes me want to pick up a 1/4 screwdriver for light jobs around the house and as something that's easy for her to use.
A lot of people, who aren't super regular power tool users, have a hard time getting the chuck tight on a drill, and the quick connect takes that out of the equation, from an ease of use standpoint I would highly recommend a screwdriver like that.
Those are all super good points. I think the screw driver had a place. I like it.
They also aren’t the fuel versions..idk I wouldn’t buy any non-fuel
Which specific models of each matters a lot.
Fuel or Surge impacts are way higher powered of course, but screwdriver vs. drill comes down to which models (and drill or hammer drill as well? Some people might need the hammer aspect)... The power on all of them is higher now as well.
For awhile the drills had electronic clutches which everyone seemed to hate (and that pushed some sales toward the screwdrivers - which have manual clutches, except the fuel/brushless version sadly). But the new drills, like 3404 have mechanical clutches again.
Screwdrivers wise, the 2401 (brushed) is a single speed (~500rpm IIRC and mech. clutch), the 2406 is 2 speed (and 1700 rpm and mech. clutch). Or the 2402 is brushless/fuel and 2 speed (1500) BUT has an E clutch sadly.
It’s a tricky triangle of “pick two” between impact and drill/hammer vs. screwdriver - I mean even if the only reason to have 2 is to have 2 different tools to not be switching bits constantly...
You can always add an adjustable chuck to a 1/4” hex for the rare times you need it... maybe they’ll do a fuel screwdriver w e clutch soon. Tho maybe the 2406 is fine and the power just doesn’t matter anyway if you have an impact around as well.
Oh, and the installation driver 🤣, tho there are some right angle attachments that achieve some of that functionality.
So many options.
If I could only have one I would pick the drill. Having all three Fuel versions I use the screwdriver 3 to 1 over the other 2 combined.
Good test,👍 interesting to see the the strength of these .
Nice set of peices .
Hopefully will be getting the Screwdriver for undoing trims & interiors, also on motorcycles where the torque isn't to much,
Especially on the aluminum sections,
I recall that the impact is rated at 60nm & the driver is 10nm
Best In class in the mini 12V series range 👌
I actually have all three of these and they work great for automotive repair and DIY projects around the house. Each has its own purpose. 😅
That impact gun is fighting for its life ☠️ you kept that thing going for a good 20 seconds
As a low voltage electrician.
These type of tools (electric screw drivers) are the best tool you can have.
I use it all the time for building racks, equipment, installing keypads, building equipment mounts, etc.
And it protects all the fasteners used on electronics. It’s the best.
Saves time and your wrists and prevents stripping of screws.
I use the screwdriver most of the time, unless it can't perform the job anymore; for example when I need more drilling speed (or hammer function), it's the only time I pull out the M12 Fuel drill, and if I need more torque it's the only time I pull out the noisy M18 impact.
Hmm, makes sense. I tend to like it more and more all the time.
The screw driver works very well in automotive/ diesel applications for finesse work like valve covers, oil pans and transmission pans for example.
I hadn't considered that. Thanks for the comment!
Definitely, impact -D's torque way to much , especially on tightening areas you described..
It can dethread a 10mm ect .. Those areas around transmissions & head covers ect..
I know these pieces aren't the big boys like Dewalt- DCF's ect.. but that hammer has some blow, especially with a fresh battery
I'm getting the Screwdriver exactly for this reason.
Great review. From watching, really impressed with screwdriver if I could only have one. Weight is important too.
The wife ask all the time why do I have so many different drills don't they all do the same thing and I simply say why do you have so many shoes and nail polishes and makeup don't they all do the same thing LOL she leaves me alone for about a year before she gives me shit again but they all serve their purpose great video
I’ve wanted something kind of small tool for a long time. My rigid drill is old, and huge, and my dewalt impact is awesome but too big for some things. I think I’m going to be checking out the m12 series for mostly the drill and the screwdriver. I also like how compact they look, and since it’s Milwaukee they’ll be super powerful.
In my opinion the biggest benefit of the cordless screwdriver is that it is very light to use.
I agree. I suppose it’s handy for lots of things.
The FUEL screw driver is my favorite!
It's a good tool for a good price right now!
I bought one today and am thinking it will work great for removing hardware before painting
Great info
WTF, Joe Rogan? I got the screwdriver, one battery and 3/8 ratchet for $100. I've already used all of them right before winter got bad and already paid for themselves with car work. The screwdriver is likely the best of the 3.
I love my M12 screwdriver!
I'm glad you did the comparison, but you kept messing with the settings. I know it wasn't a out measuring torque, but I was curious about that aspect. Would have been nice to just see one run with all at max speed, and another with all at max torque (or whatever is available for that tool)
Yes! Exactly what I was wondering. I have the Screwdriver and the Impact was hoping to learn more about the torque settings. I was thrilled when my son gave me the M12 "Screwdriver", but next holiday he gave me the smaller Impact tool and now I use that for most everything - just don't know about the settings.
Im not sure why you are so against the screwdriver. it seemed to perform really well and is quite heaper. it also allows for more control and just really good tool to have around. if I had to choose 1 id choose screwdriver
I’m not against it. In the video it was pretty much just my impressions of the tool and thought it was maybe unnecessary. I’ve had a few things to do since making this video and have grabbed the screw driver each time. The tool is really growing on me at this point. If I could only have one I’m getting the drill because it’s still more versatile but the screw driver is a nice tool to have for sure.
Very interesting to see that an impact driver kills the screws. I feared that this might happen after I have read that Milwaukee released dedicated shockwave bits. I am wondering where to buy shockwave screws.
I think the surge nowadays would eliminate having all these drills.
Wondering is it worth it to go for the fuel version?
Iv had the screwdriver since 2020 and use it daily as an electrician.
can you lightly squeeze the trigger for the m12 screwdriver, do that it spins slowly?
I bought a 2-in-1 impact Dekton, It has 2 functions of a screwdriver and a impact. If you want to drill just buy some Unika hex drill. Great tool minimum price only $30 warranty included
The 18 torque setting is like turning your 14 up to 11.
They have brushless for pver 100 and older one for about 75 is still worth getting
You helped me dude
I have all 3....lets the friends get involved in screwing jobs.
I got into these when I was out of state on a job and needed a cheap cordless drill for a bunch of screws. Got the screwgun and impact driver with charger and batteries for a hundred bucks (and a bag) from funeral home depot in FL.
Makes sense.
Neat video appreciate this. This is a line up of really old m12 tools I’ve been looking at and all are fairly affordable. Would skip that impact and go for the fuel m12 driver the bare tool is 89$ or only 140$ for the bundle and you get much more. I think I’m going to stock up on the impact, I already have the screwdriver, the m12 fuel, the ridgid 12 volt screwdriver and impact (the ones that look like the little 12v milwauke screwdriver) and a little 40$ 18v ridgid and start doing some tests. Got to get a better camera, mic, and editing set up first .
Good luck with it all man, thanks for watching!
Are they full semi auto though? 🤔
Is there a NOTICEABLE weight difference between the drill and screwdriver? (if both are brushless)
They are both brushed. And not that I have personally noticed.
@@DereksWorkshopAndProjects thx!
Lol the idea of the video was perfect and what I needed but the information was just guess work and a lot of I don't knows.
Better than pretending like I know for sure what I’m talking about and giving false information like it’s fact eh?
I have the fuel as far as the drill and impact driver and have that screwdriver and all 3 work good but would not push the screwdriver to hard just work it like it was designed for and the drill since it is also a screwdriver use it for both drill and driver and the impact push it cause they were and are meant for heavy duty screwdrivers.
I'm a fan of the screwdriver.
I find myself using it more than I thought I would.
I purchase a couple of 12 volt Milwaukee tools, and quite frankly, with the exception of the standard drill I was not impressed with their performance. My Gen II two rachet wrenches (half and 3/8 inch) have very low torque so I generally got my Milwaukee 1/2" or Hercules 3/8" impact wrenches which are both 18 volt. My biggest disappointment is the 12 volt recip saw. It is too anemic for pruning which is why I bought it. Ending up buying an 18 volt version from another vendor,
Well first off the ratchets are not made for torque power they are made for putting on and taking off fasteners with speed. It is or should be well known the ratchets don’t break loose fasteners on its own.
Wow! So the impact destroyed the long screws.
Still cant decide between screwdriver or impact. Anybody have both and would recommend one over the other?
Impact if you drive a lot of bigger construction screws and the screwdriver if you do a lot of fine work like cabinet building
They just really aren’t the same tool. Similar, in that they both drive screws, but they do it differently. If I could only have 1 of these I’d get the drill. If I could only have 2, I’d get the drill and the impact. If I could have 3, I’d have all 3. 😁
Impact - it drills and screws. I just used it with a Hole Saw drill blade to make 1-3/4" holes in the 1 x 4 lumber in my closet. Lol, I just don't know what the different settings 1 - 3 on the top are for. \o/. I loved the Screwdriver because it's so much lighter/smaller then my Rigid cordless drill. But now that I have the even smaller Impact, that's my go to.
So screwdriver would just keep from over torquing and stripping out stuff. Would the same thing be accomplished with a drill?
Yes, it has a clutch for torque settings too.
@@DereksWorkshopAndProjects is it the same clutch or is it stronger? Why not just use a drill?
@@seabass22 the drill doesn’t lock in the screw bit. Loosens when letting off.
@@danlux4954 yeah. I got the screwdriver and use it all the time now
@@seabass22 which one? The Fuel?
Seems the screwdriver is just a one speed compact version of the drill?
Not really worth buying honestly but kind of convenient. I got it for the same price as one battery and it came with a battery and a charger so I think it was a decent deal.
Th screwdrivers nice for doing outlets
Thats what I thought after I made the video!
Use it every day for trimming out outlets, disc lights and switches. Clutch setting 12 is comparable to hand tight.
Ahh, I see now about the screwdriver, my bad it's not like my Bosch, I thought yours was a drill too. Yeh, the screwdriver seems redundant, I agree.
Thank you, Joe Rogan!
Well you seem as uninformed as us.I am glad we are learning together.
Lol, it was a new tool for me.
I feel like for the everyday home owner guy the screwdriver is kinda a waste of money since the drill can do everything the screwdriver can do and more. The screw driver is kind of a one trick pony. Probably really nice for cabinets though.
There's nothing more annoying than having to hand-screw something together ua-cam.com/users/postUgkx1McjgiqTNcTjrhvRvJWcrk5bzTeQW-Wn except for the pain in your wrist that is. This addition to my tool kit is great and I can get a lot done without all the pain and annoyance. The battery last's a long time and I have yet to run out of power when doing a small project (granted I am saying small project because I'm no construction worker). The only thing that I wish it had was an LED or pair of LEDs to indicate when it was charging and whether or not the charge was complete (or full).
Screwdriver is very useful in Aviation work so I hear
That would make sense.
The non fuel impact gun is weak compared to the m12 fuel impact.
I bought the little screw driver because it was $70 with 2 batteries and a charger. Seemed like a no brained, since I had the two other tools already.
That's why I bought it.
Wood, plastic, sheet metal... drill/drivers
If you want to drill a hole, get a cordless drill. If you want to use screws and 2x4 to build something, you need cordless impact driver. Cordless screwdriver, you don't have to buy it, regular screwdriver can get the job done.
If my budget is limited and I can only buy one, I would buy an impact driver. I have makita 18v impact driver and I use it everywhere. Car, woodworking, disassemble electronics.
Makes sense. I am a little different. If I can only have one I am buying the drill, but it's a good thing I don't have to make that choice because I like all three!
It's called a collet.
There you go. Thanks. I looked up the definition of a collet and it said something to the effect of “a collar around a chuck” so I am not technically wrong… I guess?
Bruh is this Joe Rogan speaking 😂😂
Heard that so many times before!
not gonna lie, the test block has to be a major flaw in the experiment. it has drill holes all over it. the screws are gonna go through that ate up wood like butter
M12 screwdriver
These aren't redundant tools if you have them set-up properly. Think the screwdriver for assembly. The impact for nuts & bolts. The drill for making holes.
If you can only afford one tool, get the Fuel version Hammer Drill, since it has 2 speeds, clutch settings, a drill setting as well as the hammer drill for things like masonry. It's also the only tool in the bunch that can hold any diameter drill bit or driver including hex or other odd shapes.
I thought it was Joe Rogan for a sec
When did joe rogan do videos on tools lol
Hear that all the time haha.
Why do you sound like joe Rogan😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂
You sound like joe rogan 😂
Hear that all the time haha.
Try better batteries. 😊
Because of brushed motors these dont last. You pay less but they dont last. If you use everyday - one year and dead. And are heavier and not as strong as new line.
BUY NEW FUEL BRUSHLESS M12 LINE.
You can change the brushes in them.
Joe Rogan
Totally joe rogan moonlighting for Milwaukee
Lol 😂
I was wondering where I heard that voice. Yeah that was joe rogan
This just shows you can't beat a basic drill cordless or corded...all these other gimmick tools you don't need..And don't bring a hammer drill in the picture because game over.!! Spend your money wisely...
The impact has its place without a doubt for me, but the basic cordless drill can do most things just fine. If I could only have one though, definitely a drill.
I actually use my M12 FUEL screwdriver the most because I have hex drill bits. I use it for everything because I can control the torque with the clutch which is nice for screws
What do you mean game over for the hammer drill? Should I get a drill or hammer drill?
@@andrewchristopher8334 If you're planning to drill a hole in concrete or metal, get hammer drill.
Screwdriver is for allll of my house needs where the other 2 are for auto and wood construction
Makes sense.
