  • Remember last year when we did the pigment trials for the lime plaster skim? And then the trial in the downstairs loo? Today we dive right in and get started on plastering the wall of the bedroom. We're missing some materials but we'll try to manage with what we've got.
    This was filmed in February 2023, which is why it looks soooooo cold! If you want to know more about the restoration of the chateau's historic coach house, then check out the playlist specifically dedicated to it on our channel. This is the earlier video for the pigment trials mentioned in this video: • Restoring the Chateau'...
    We are Marc, Amy, Clement and Juliette, a French-English family restoring a 33 room medieval chateau and huge estate in southern France. Follow our award-winning, historically-sensitive restorations and our journey towards self-sufficiency and sustainability, with plenty of laughter along the way.

    You each have different styles of plastering (from mixing/deciding on amount of pigment to application...) each equally satisfying to watch - and see the results! I think watching the process and results is one of the things I like about your channel. Working as a musician, it's the same, but in that less tangible mode than plaster.
    I'm glad Marc wore his "nice" clothes - just to see him outside of a tux on the tractor (lol). Was good to change tho - better safe than sorry.

    I do Antiques and Interiors( only 26 years dealing …so what do I know) Would nt describe white as cold …but fresh….and as wall are never “ empty” …it’s a great backdrop for dressing them with paintings, photographs, tapestry’s etc….. any kind of “ pink “ will dull down and become more pink.

    • @Chroniclesofrosieres
      @Chroniclesofrosieres  Рік тому +3

      It’s not the white in itself but the very large expanse of wall that would be white, which along with high, white ceilings can really feel cold. We’re no strangers to dressing walls but in a rustic coach house setting we won’t be going overboard with anything too ‘chateau’. I grew up with a vernacular archaeologist and the plaster on timber framed buildings in the UK had always called to me. I love the warmth of heritage pinks that are often used. White plaster I think is ok on a real timber framed building but the big expanse of timber-free, fully flat, modern plasterboard would have been too much for us.

    I love watching you guys. You are working the exact part of a relationship which I call the era of the preschoolers marriage! May I make a couple of suggestions? I am going to anyway.
    When one of you has to make an important compromise/ sacrifice on design or any other decision area, the other find a way very soon after that occurs to stash the kids and plan a romantic short vacation in honor of the compromise, so the partner who was gracious and gave way will have something wonderful to remember each time they walk past the compromise, reminding them that there are lots of rewards for having been willing to give way to the other in agreement. It is so easy to over look these events in view of everyday pressures and stresses, but a compromise is a beautiful gift one person gives another and should never be overlooked or dismissed.
    Another suggestion. I totally understand not wanting to stop in the middle of a job to change. If Mark doesn’t like to change out regular clothes before work jobs, for the days you know will be messy jobs, find him a set of work clothes in which he looks very handsome and that give him much more range of movement. Lay them out clean in the morning and make sure they smell wonderful. That way he can dress once and be prepared for the day.
    Then he looks even cuter and more comfortable in his work clothes so we can admire him even more! Maybe an historically fashioned loose fitting peasant shirt and very comfortable moisture wicking traveling slacks or outfitters slacks. Maybe even a hand knit or padded work vest for cold day jobs. Make sure they are clean after every job. But celebrate the various stains as reminders of events being attacked and completed, rather than as flaws.
    That way he can be fashionably, comfortably and affordable dressed. And his attire will serve as a momentos of successes.

    • @kandplamb

      Hmmmm. Celebrating compromise. I like it!

    • @Chroniclesofrosieres

      Ha ha I love your suggestions Jane. What you perhaps don’t see here is that every day I lose the ‘battle’ on about twenty different design or practical ideas relating to the house or estate. So me getting him to change his €150 Christmas present jumper when working is a fairly minor gripe that I’m pretty sure he barely noticed. He was just playing to the camera. However I’ll pass the idea on to him that he needs to give me something lovely to remember a moment by every time I agree to one of his ideas that I thought differently about. I could end up with all manner of wonderful things and experiences to help me feel better and less soul-crushingly exhausted and worn down by the sheer weight of trying to accomplish our project with two tiny kids!!!
      I love the idea of ‘stashing’ the kids and getting away somewhere anywhere, for a night or even an evening but sadly we don’t have family here so it’s impossible. We get one day (9pm- 5pm) a week to ourselves which is always flat out working because it’s the only day we can really work (together). We haven’t had a dinner out in the evening together since 2019! And I also love the idea of ‘just’ making him some works clothes. But as my children never nap at the same time, rarely seem to both be asleep before 10pm and then wake me all night, the tiny amount energy and time I have for making and doing stuff of any skill (after staying up to midnight to clear the chaos of the children and the day) is generally directed towards UA-cam and making tiles for the bathrooms. Some days I realise it’s nearly a week since I even had time to find my hairbrush and brush my hair 😂. So let Marc wear out the jumper I spent weeks researching and then importing from Guernsey specifically to give him something warm and smart to wear (as he asked). I just don’t have the spare mental or physical capacity to do anything other than remind him of it as a consideration.
      On the other hand, I hope that everybody can see in the video how often I take time to express my gratitude for his skills and hard work and how happy it makes me that he’s putting all of this into our future home. I really do spend a lot of time on making sure he knows how much I appreciate this work.

      @janeharris6925 Рік тому

      @@Chroniclesofrosieres you guys need to get some volunteer nannies. Others get volunteers to come help with Chateau construction. You need some volunteer Nannie’s. Maybe not an all year round nannie but perhaps for a few weeks during specific projects or specific times of the year when you can get the most done. I know there are endless young people in the US who would jump at the chance to see France, who love children and could be helpful. Many who are the oldest of a group of siblings so they are well versed in child care and young children’s needs.
      Many have school vacations of several weeks and some might be able to use the time for French language credits.
      Of course you would want whom you choose to be carefully vetted and you would want them relatively short term so the kids have fun and enjoy each other but are not devastated when the nanny (also attached) must go home. I believe there are nanny credentialing agencies in the US and probably the EU who you could consult on this.
      You guys will benefit to opening your adventure to help and company along the way. Then you can cherish each other more, lessen the burdens and exhaustion and share the joy of France even more broadly.
      And I love that you get the idea of my suggestion! Remember, the first goal is to love and appreciate each other; children and Chateau will falter if that relationship weakens. Go back and watch some early filming and look to see if you don’t see some changes in manner and enthusiasm from then to now. That change in the result of exhaustion and feeling you have to all by yourselves alone.
      Second is to feel you have some time for enjoyable personal goals, that’s why we are out on earth. We didn’t come here to slave over a structure but to learn through projects how to understand and create love and harmony with others and develop our appreciation of the benefits and beauty of the Universe. That means doing some enjoyable activities each your own. On top of that, there are young seamstresses and tailors who again could come to your aid as volunteers and be thrilled to do it. They could probably whip up entire wardrobes for everyone in the time it might take you to make a few garments. And to get to do it in France! “Totally rad”!
      Back to my point about growth and love. The chateau merely provides the opportunity: it is not a goal in itself. You could be building a boat, climbing Mt Everest, running a grocery- it is not the project in itself that matters. Important yes, but not the paramount goal. A great final outcome if filled with fun and joy along with hard work. Ultimately a despised and hated burden hard to look at if it takes all your joy and love and leaves you resentful and lonely. Of course you are free to do what you want and ignore me. That should go without saying. But I am just saying…

      Volunteers are unfortunately impossible to vet sufficiently to be safe to leave in charge of the children. We’ve had some bad, and dangerous, experiences that made us realise how non existent the support and vetting is by the volunteer agencies. A nanny by contrast is a fully salaried employee that we simply can’t afford! We’re going to make an attempt to have an au pair this year, which is somewhere in between.

      And because of the way our chateau is set up, we can’t currently host volunteers for help on other tasks because they share all living spaces with our children, including the sole bathroom. That’s not safe for our family with the total lack of vetting. As I say we had a very scary experience of this some time ago. And before you suggest we just finish another bathroom, we have an entire sewage system to complete before we can! Also it’s almost impossible to find skilled volunteers, since skilled craftspeople understandably charge for their work, and we would want to pay them for it. So naturally if we’re paying for the work then we turn to local craftspeople rather than pay people from abroad, because we believe strongly in supporting the local economy.

    Oh dear,what a shame that some people are so nasty,I always think that they maybe have something going on in their lives,and take it out on others,usually someone very innocent.Please do what makes it right for you both and your lovely little family.I feel it would be a great shame if they put you off from doing this video,it lightens my week and brings so much joy.Being tired from babies and lack of sleep is such a hard thing to manage.I volunteer in a charity shop and recently we got a Guernsey jumper and dress (quite rare)in and I had heard of them but didn't know too much, when the manager said the last jumper they had sold for £40,within a day.Take care of yourself and then you can take care of the family.

    The color reminds me of milk chocolate. Did you have enough to plaster the lower part of the wall? Best wishes for Easter.
