The gm quel in 0083 looked like a gm Kai in titans colors Maybe it was a gm custom and gm Kai that was used as a test type of the gm quel. And as they learned the advantages and disadvantages of the proto quel the design changed into the gm quel we all know and love.
Won't be surprised if its animator/director error concerning the Early Quel. Bandai, being Bandai, are probably going retcon it and turns it to a MSV and turns it to a P-Bandai kit. No errors, more money.
There more than likely GM customs being developed into the Quel. The titans were just now forming and just started working on the Quel. I doubt they would have a completed Quel at that point, otherwise would have seen it in the show. So yeah, I think those are mostly GM customs, just being converted to the Quel.
More like: Animators: "Don't worry about it, no one is going to notice it" Kakarot197: *Silently sips very slowly from his massive coffee cup while looking straight into the camera at the animators*
It does make sense that those are early type GM Quels. Might have even had a different name. The Titans were just formed in that scene. Wouldn't make sense that they'd have their first signature GM the moment they are established.

Still better than the Hizack, which is Zaku with a beam weapon somehow connected to it. It can't even use a beam rifle and beam saber at the same time!
Me: Satisfied & convinced it's the same GM Quel I've been playing with for years in Ghiren's Greed. Kakarot: "I will liberate you from the false reality!"
I always thought the 'Quels' we saw aboard the Albion were their RGM-79N Customs, simply modified and repainted. It explained a lot of the discrepancies and other things at the time...
Back in the day, I thought they were just repainted GM Customs, but seeing them clearly it's obvious they aren't. I personally think this was a "it's in the background let's get this done" mentality was chosen with no one anticipating 4K back when the OVA was made. After the analysis, I think (in universe) these were more like "test type" units where they just glued on parts to old 79N models to see what worked best. Heck, that's the design philosophy of the Titans Test Team, so why not start that up in 83/84 when the Titans were formed.
This was very intriguing. I personally have my own theory though. I don't think these machines are modified GM Customs. But rather modified GM Kai. The GM Kai (or GM Type C) is the parent machine to the GM Custom, and therefor grandfather to the GM Quel. So it stands to reason that they shared many parts. The GM Custom is essentially a GM Kai with a strengthened frame and a new armor, and then parts from the Gundam Alex were incorporated into it. With the Titans seeking a mass production machine with similar performance for lower cost, I believe they went back to the base frame of the typical GM Kai and modified it with many of the same parts as the GM Custom, while also adding their own designs in a hurry. This likely made a hybrid machine that was in between the GM Kai and GM Custom. You remarked that the front skirts were completely black. And when I look at them they also look completely flat without the square armor parts added on. This tells me it's likely the front skirt armor of the GM Kai. And with the data on this early machine, it possibly also served as a design base for the two modified GM Kai used by the Titans Test Team that were modified to GM II specs. So I'm in complete agreement that this is most likely an early type GM Quel. I would also say that that it's likely that the final production GM Quel still shared a very similar base frame as the GM Kai. Because units like the GM Custom were reinforced for high mobility and durability. But the first Gundam Hazel, which was a GM Quel with a new head and added boosters had trouble handling the higher mobility because the boosters were warping the frame. Which made them have to take it apart and rebuild it stronger on both the inside and outside. Likely the same result would happen if high mobility boosters of similar design were attached to a stock GM Kai. If anything the 0083 anime showed that the GM Kai was really not much more durable than the standard GM, despite it's much improved exterior design. Hence why the GM II used an enhanced version of the base design of the standard GM for easier production. Also, it was shown the the Federation Hooligans manga that the early Titans while on Earth used standard GM Kai painted in titans colors instead of using their GM Quel because the Quel was designed more for use in space and the colonies. And with the fast introduction of the Hizack, the Quel barely ever needed to be used on Earth. If anything the Quel's legacy is a machine that was launched too little too late as the Hizack, Galbaldy Beta, and GM II were also launched not too long later.
I'm not Kakarot, but you'll find part of the answer in Episode 0, Season 2 of the Mobile Suit Breakdown podcast. As I recall, transformation gimmicks were the absolute hotness in the Japanese toy market at the time, and the show's sponsor insisted on it. Not so sure about the justification in the show itself. Anaheim being Anaheim, I guess?
For an in-lore explanation, at around the time of Zeta and ZZ, most reactors had gotten so small that having multiple weapons was a must, and in order to hold all those weapons and for them to be viable they made a lot of frames transformable. The problem came from the fact that a lot of the transformations were really complicated and unless you were on the level of the Gundam, the transformations weren't always feasible in combat situations. Especially for simple grunt units. The Feds themselves were notorious for trying to get as much as they could out of a suit, but as cheaply as possible, which is why less and less of their suits transformed. Zeon kept a good chunk of their suits transformable, but they veered toward reliable mainstays as time went on.
There's a lot of transformable suits in Zeta because Macross came out between when 0079 and when Zeta came out. Transformable robots became a trend at the time and it's likely Bandai wanted model kits of some.
Real life: they're trying to compete with macross who has transformation gimmick with are really popular at the time In - universe : the transformable mobile suit we're created to try eliminate 2 problems 1. In-gravity air combat and the need for sub - flight system. During this time minovsky craft system (things that let warships fly in earth gravity) we're still massive and require a massive reactor to power and while sub flight system is a decent alternative, anaheim and earth federation wanted to introduce other possibilities that doesn't require the loss of mobility. 2. Higher flight mobility: just as I said above, sfs aren't capable of high mobility dog-fight. The mobile suit might as well be sitting duck on top of sfs. So by transforming the mobile suits and focusing its thrusters on a single side, they"re capable of giving ms higher speed, mobility, and maneuverability at under gravity dog fight as well as reducing time for ms to go from combat zone back for resupply enabling hit and run tactics more efficiently. As for why they disappear later on in the timeline: transformable mobile suits are expensive and hard to maintain as well as prone to failure. In the late UC earth federation just doesn't have the same budget as it used to so, to cut cost they decided to scrap transformable ms. Also, the miniaturization of mcs (minovsky craft system) and the introduction of smaller, more efficient reactors just give the military more reason to stop developing and/or manufacturing costly and finicky transformable ms all together
Since they used the GM type c for the Powered GM, it'll make since that they'd use the type c for the Quel as well. Since there were a lot of type c back then and was used in making the booster pack for the gp01. They then combined the type-c and the gm custom together and making the gm quels and then use the blueprints for the gpo1 to make the Gundam Mark 2
I absolutely love each and every one of these Gundam lore episodes! I always love learning more and more about everything gundam! Thank you Kakarot197 for every video you do!
Well everything had to start somewhere, so the GM Quel in 0083 ending maybe this is Albion's Team OG GM Custom modified to look scary and intimidating, and also just for demonstration purpose to show how powerful the newly formed Titans to those who oppose the Feddies.
I'm gonna drop a hard pill to swallow here: Jamitov was doing in UC 0087 what Char would later do in UC 0093. You can't approve of one man, and not the other.
probably the titans wanted to start with a bang by rollling out a new high performance unit... but did not really have one yet so they just took existing machines gave them some cosmetic changes and fine tunning to serve that pourpose and then when the actual unit was ready just convert the fake ones or do an good old swicharou.
That does make sense. If the artists and animators were theoretically in a rush to make this mobile suit, then the same would apply to the mechanics and engineers. The GM Quel may not have been finished or commissioned at the time the Titans organization was just formed so they slap together what’s left of the spare parts from the GM Custom onto some GM Kais then cover it up with a dark, trendy color scheme. If it fooled viewers long enough until they look back on it, it can certainly fool the pilots in-universe.
When I first saw it so many years ago, I just thought they were repainted GM Customs. OTOH this would have been around the same time as the massive GM refit project, converting them into GM IIs. So it's possible some of the parts from other models that won't fit the GM ii's planned appearance got kitbashed. The torso is the easiest to explain. If they were drawing from existing GM parts, they won't get the usual GM Quel torso. That center torso portion has more in common with the RX-178 so that design aesthetic won't come until later.
the head is very noticable since i do have a MG GM Quel kit. other than that, everything else flew under the radar until you mentioned it now. the unit's color scheme is one of the reasons i prefer the Jesta over the Jegan

Hey Kakarot197! I know you're a busy guy and probably don't remember me, but I was the guy that first asked you about this Quel discrepancy on facebook something like 5 or 6 years ago! Something always seemed off, but with the older DVD and VHS screenshots we couldn't be sure. I never thought I'd see you make a video on it though. Does this mean a custom build kitbash of a Quel early type is on the way? Anyways keep up the good work!
I will say because of Bandai made so many careless mistakes in the past (GM beam gun to GM beam rifle, GM command's bullpup machine rifle shoots beams, Rezin Schnyder's custom blue Geara Doga turns into 2 blue Geara Dogas, I believe it is just the mistake made by the animator instead of something more complicated since it is easier for the MS change from GM Custom into GM Quel with some minor adjustments along the way as GM is also a limited mass production type based on number of scenes they've shown in the anime (if it is the early production type, Bandai will probably push a new kit to the market as it will make a lot of $$ without making lots of adjustments on the kit just the changing colors on other model kits).
This is crazy talk, but is there any chance you can do a collaboration with Gamore, another amazing Gundam lore UA-camr? I think it would be especially fun for more obscure topics like this one.
Hey Kakarot, do you think in the future you could do a video on the G-Line Series(Assault, Light, Standard, Custom, etc) or if that's not a long enough video, maybe one on the GM strikers? Look forward to seeing more of your content in the future.
Imo: Unit/Division, For example, Londo Bell General units use a collor to identify them, same for the other units of the Londo Bell Unit/Squadron, helpful to identify which pilots will use what MS during deployment for launch Unit/Branch of service, Titans suits for example was unique from EFF standard uniforms, same for Ground service MS pilots (who by unicorn just wore common uniforms for MS pilots when not piloting in space)
What probably happened: an animation error of some sort What Bandai will try to sell you: another GM variation, more room for p-Bandai kits Not that I mind this theory at all, wild speculation is fun by me
Also an option, firearms tend to go through a lot of refinement periods to reach their final forms. The Albion crew was originally a prototype test team, so, why not have the crew get quel protypes
I’m not sure if you answered this, but in gundam vs debates, do you go through why certain Mobiles Suits do better than others based on who piloted the machine or do you do the opposite way and base the pilot’s performance based around the machines they pilot? Aka, how do you power scale Gundam?
Hello Kakarot jus a Question for the Week Wich Organization is the most Evil in gundam anime to this point for Cruelty of their Actions The Titans or The A LAWS?
I find the realization that none of the Zaku JC units in the 08th MS team actually have shield spikes a lot more egregious than this... yet I treat it exactly the same way: It's an animation error so just ignore it!
Is it me, or are the shoulders differently shaped on the screenshot from 0083 as well? With the comparison up of the Type C's shoulders, they feel like the also look more like those than the regular production model Quel. As one of the other commenters said, I think that this is probably just the engineers working on the conversion process to produce the intended final GM Quel design from their other GM bases.
Looks to me that maybe there are cameras on the legs the reason I think this is that there is a tarp over its left leg as if its being installed then again that could be just them putting a tarp over it for some other reason. but a side from that I like theory number 3 that its a early model of it. also the armor on the front skirt is not the same in fact I have never seen a Fed MS with that type before the front bits on the skirt the one that would be blue on the Later Model on this "Early Type" they are there but they are more slim they don't go down as far once again I have never seen ones like them before if another MS as them from the UC please tell me. oh and one final thing I don't see the top yellow things on the chest on the "Early Type" but that maybe just the camera angel oh and last last thing the Front Camera thing is also not there
Either its just a simple mistake with the studio or its planned, it does makes sense. IRL counterparts like tanks and planes are different from its final production. Take the Panzer series of tanks for example, over the time each model looks different from its original design due to upgrades and technological updates. Interestingly enough, if this was a mistake on the studio then we can just say its an acceptable mistake

The Quel came after the OVA right? Like did the Quel even have a name at the time? I don't remember it being name dropped in show. Or is that an Advance of Zeta thing that came retroactively? Like it seems like there isn't an in universe inconsistency. It's just that the Quel didn't exist yet. So obviously it's not gonna perfectly match somebody's design from a decade later.
My headcanon is that they modified and recolored the GM Custom lineart and animation model. Cause not even the gundam nerds would notice. Meanwhile: Us Gundam nerds….
One question that I often wonder is how to non-UC mobile suits compare against UC ones. Is a Leo more powerful than a Zaku II? Is Wing Gundam equal to the RX-78-2, it is more of a match for the Zeta Gundam, or would it be able to hold its own even in Unicorn? Would God Gundam be able to deal with Sinanju, or would it be outclassed by Nu Gundam?
@@trollinoakenshield9822 I wouldn't exactly count a game (Let alone an SD one) as cannon. I'd also point out that Master Asia is such an absolutely badass he took out mobile suits with nothing more than a big sash so it isn't really a fair comparison to include him. I do suspect G Gundam units are at or near the top.
Only master, god and devil gundam, the other gundam including domon companion are pretty much mediocre or even lame. Game aside those 3 are still the strongest, maybe only black history turn A could face them
Leos seem to hold their own in limited circumstances and so do Zakus, and they have equivalent loadouts, so the better pilot wins. As long as the Wing Gundam has the Buster Rifle, the RX-78’s on borrowed time (I’m not counting it as a one shot because Luna Titanium’s gotta count for something)
@@koushiro86 i dont think luna titanium could withstand buster rifle when a small mega particle beam from zeong mouth could destroy gundam head, arm and leg
I think this is just a case of applying later, less canon material (that would really only be known to the hardest of hardcore fans) that didn't even exist at the time. Aren't GM Quels not even in any actual animated works beyond that one sceeenshot from 0083? You can't hold the primary works of fiction to minor spin offs and merchandise, especially if the spin offs came later. I highly doubt any of this was running through the head of any writer or animator working on this back in the early 90s. This is like when people apply expanded material that came years later to the original Star Wars movies.
Both gm quels are canon to the UC timeline, as shown in Narrative as the later version of the gm quel is in a hanger bay. It was also confirmed in advance of zeta that the gm quel in 0083 is an early type. Whether this was intended or not doesn't matter anymore.
Titans think they are Earth supremist, but they want to be the alien more than Zeeks, despite they were mostly Earthlings. Why are their Mobile suits look like Alien's mobile suit, despite they supposed to be the Earthlings?

I also wonder if the GM quel appeared shortly in the Gundam Narrative movie is the early type or the final model.
Hey Kakarot, do you think in the future you could do a video on the G-Line Series(Assault, Light, Standard, Custom, etc) or if that's not a long enough video, maybe one on the GM strikers? Look forward to seeing more of your content in the future.
The head of this "Early Type" kinda looks like a Nemo's head to me.
I thought so too. I was starting to think it was a GM Quel with a Nemo head and GM Custom legs.
Okay so I want crazy then. Cause when I saw those gm quells I always thought they looked kind of odd.
Maybe question of the week? But what do the colors of a pilots spacesuit mean? Does it signify rank, age, size, etc?
Imo:
Unit/Division, For example, Londo Bell General units use a collor to identify them, same for the other units of the Londo Bell
Unit/Squadron, helpful to identify which pilots will use what MS during deployment for launch
Unit/Branch of service, Titans suits for example was unique from EFF standard uniforms, same for Ground service MS pilots (who by unicorn just wore common uniforms for MS pilots when not piloting in space)
For the white suit that Gundam pilots wear my guess is that it's given to unit commanders
What probably happened: an animation error of some sort
What Bandai will try to sell you: another GM variation, more room for p-Bandai kits
Not that I mind this theory at all, wild speculation is fun by me
Also an option, firearms tend to go through a lot of refinement periods to reach their final forms. The Albion crew was originally a prototype test team, so, why not have the crew get quel protypes
probably funny if someone does a kit-bash with their gunpla to achieve the look of it.
Welp...it's a wrap, Bandai just announced the P-Bandai 1/144 HGUC GM Quel (Early Type) :-)
There is a possibilty that those are bates and monchas custom gm units repainted due to them joining the titans just a theory
Tbh, from the first time i saw that, i thought this is modified GM C with GM Customs parts as additional in it,
Oehhhh love this analysis
I’m not sure if you answered this, but in gundam vs debates, do you go through why certain Mobiles Suits do better than others based on who piloted the machine or do you do the opposite way and base the pilot’s performance based around the machines they pilot?
Aka, how do you power scale Gundam?
Question are Jesta consider a consider a spiritual successor to the GM quel due to be a little similar in terms with the appearance.
I would call it GM Quell Test-type...
Gm development history please
Is it me, or are the shoulders differently shaped on the screenshot from 0083 as well? With the comparison up of the Type C's shoulders, they feel like the also look more like those than the regular production model Quel.
As one of the other commenters said, I think that this is probably just the engineers working on the conversion process to produce the intended final GM Quel design from their other GM bases.
Ah yes. The GM Quail.
Hi...whatever happen to the immortal 4th team?
Or it could be a GM Quel Custom just for the Team on the Pegasus Class Albion.
Looks to me that maybe there are cameras on the legs the reason I think this is that there is a tarp over its left leg as if its being installed then again that could be just them putting a tarp over it for some other reason. but a side from that I like theory number 3 that its a early model of it. also the armor on the front skirt is not the same in fact I have never seen a Fed MS with that type before the front bits on the skirt the one that would be blue on the Later Model on this "Early Type" they are there but they are more slim they don't go down as far once again I have never seen ones like them before if another MS as them from the UC please tell me.
oh and one final thing I don't see the top yellow things on the chest on the "Early Type" but that maybe just the camera angel
oh and last last thing the Front Camera thing is also not there
I could use a GM Custom kit...
No Kakarot! Don't give Bandai more ideas for another (P-Bandai)model kit variant! DON'T DO IT! NOOOOOOOOOOO!
the head looks a bit like one of the gm striker to me
Is it just me, or do the chest vents look thinner on the Early Type? They remind me of the kind used on the GM Cannon II.
i wonder if this type of thing happens in other gundam anime?
Either its just a simple mistake with the studio or its planned, it does makes sense.
IRL counterparts like tanks and planes are different from its final production. Take the Panzer series of tanks for example, over the time each model looks different from its original design due to upgrades and technological updates.
Interestingly enough, if this was a mistake on the studio then we can just say its an acceptable mistake
Or the XM-1 vs what it eventually became, the M1 Abrams. They are similar but also very different.
Soon bandai will release p-bandai hg gm quel early type
Really really notice every little detail just wow I hate to say I probably wouldn't even notice the difference.. sadly I really didn't really notice the difference Mobile suit Gundam fan. Need back relearn everything about Gundam to mobile
Second but still no Alice info video
am i nuts or do the two suits in the shot have dif faces one being an older gm style of face vs the gm custon style one from 0083
seriously look at the left and right head the faces are dif
Mobile Suit Gundam Wing
Mobile Vehicle Guntank Tread
Mobile Coffin Ball [something]
Whats your outro song i know its gundam seed op3 but how did you get it pixelated
Search 8bit version
Thanks
I got it by running a midi file that I found a long time ago through an 8-bit converter.
@@kakarot197 thanks its cause i love gundam seed and just finished watching it right now im watching seed destiny i kind of want to watch IBO or uc century
@@kakarot197 what gundam series do you recomend
Space early type?
God gundam could easily destroy every other series MS.
In 1 of sd gundam game, master asia single handedly destroy the wing boys
👍
Dam
Maybe... just maybe it gm quel ver.ka
Its kinda look like.... GM KAI/TYPE C?
Please Bandai give us a model kit of that.
I just gonna call it GM Quel Early Type.
I'm not a huge GM fan, could I have a Ford Quel?
Titans think they are Earth supremist, but they want to be the alien more than Zeeks, despite they were mostly Earthlings. Why are their Mobile suits look like Alien's mobile suit, despite they supposed to be the Earthlings?
He made a video on that, why did Titans use the Hizack
Im too late to comment...
I guess... I was not fast enough... ;-;
