One of my favorite scenes, and not just because, many years after first watching Heat, I stumbled across an M3 at a local gun store and caused my bank to suffer mild withdrawal pains when I (inevitably) failed the willpower check to just walk away. Still have it, love it dearly, even though it's a complete PITA to modify. Nobody makes accessories for it. But...another neat detail in that scene is that Cherrito's shotgun is punching six-hole patterns into the truck. That tells me he's not using 00 buckshot, but the larger 000 shot, which is usually loaded six to a shell. Not common, because it's not really needed...unless you're shooting through barriers, like doors or bodywork. Excellent choice for that application!

Danny Trejo's first movie was "Runaway Train", the '80s action/adventure classic with Jon Voight. Trejo appears for a short time with no lines early in the film during a prison boxing match where he boxes Eric Roberts' character and also served as a technical advisor on how inmates in prison acted.
He was also the bad guy Steven Segal chases in Marked For Death at the beginning, then gets locked in the trunk. Also, Trejo's book is out now, it's incredible. A true bad ass killer.

More as a trophy weapon because of it's origin, is it so hard to believe? Plus no neighbors or supporters there use 556 caliber, so their std is or 7,62x39 (mostly yet) or 5,45x39; ofc 7,62x54R for the GPMG. Even the .50 are different, being NATO 12,7x99 and Russia 12,7x108mm. They don't have proper maintenance tools to keep the trophy guns there are more demanding in this issue than any ever built AK. Plus their access to NATO ammo is much more scarce and pricier due to demand/offer economy law.
@@Maddog-xc2zvblack market is deep and knows no limits. In the Mexican drug wars, guns from the wars in Iraq, Afghanistan, and even Vietnam have been recovered after shootouts. Not hard to imagine that our NATO branded gear would either get resupplied or recirculated there.

Dude this video is awesome. ‘The lead singer of System of a Down”, “FN-WTF”, and whatever the fuck else you said had me rolling. Heat is one of my favorite movies ever. Thanks for this!
Technical advisor on this movie was Andy McNab former SAS operative. Micheal Mann did overrule McNab's suggestions for dramatic effect. I saw this movie at the cinema when it came out. The hairs on the nape of my neck stood up when I saw De Niros bank break out scene. I'm ex British Infantry & this was the first time I had seen a classic British Army section attack committed to celluloid.
Same here. I had to get Commando 1995 after the film. Already had issue Gvt. Sako M/62 AssaultR and private AKs-47 Full auto. Yes some Uzi’s too.. Shorty Commando is the best I have, I love her still.
I think the FNC kind of makes sense from a filmmaking perspective. My guess is that Mann wanted something with a distinctive silhouette that'd not only fit with Pacino's character but also make him easier to identify in wide shots and action scenes where there are a lot of guys running around in dark suits, and the FNC's shape sort of fits the police role, unlike other guns of the time that had more of a "military look" or would have struck audiences of the time as "bad guy guns." (Anything AK-derived or with a similar silhouette.) The folding stock is also an asset for action scenes. There are a lot more options nowadays, and I'd think the same character in a modern remake might use a SCAR or G36, but back in 1995 I can't think of a lot of options that weren't already used by other characters and also weren't iconic from other movies. (Like the AUG in Die Hard.)
The FNC was replaced in the Belgium army, home of gun design and production, since the 70's till being replaced with the also indigenous FN SCAR. A very tech army still rocking a variant of the FNC, the Ak-5, is Sweden; to the present day. HK is very badly represented in this movie with a civilian "DMR" unscoped when the G3 SG/1 sharpshooter/sniper rifle was introduced in 1972 (called clamped scopes); Pitty it's not on the movie - or at least some clone of it instead of a iron sights variant only; such a crew surely could get hands at least on one of this G3 specialized variants - not even going so far as asking for a PSG1 or the militarized version MSG90.
If you enjoy movies that emphasize attention to detail, it's hard to beat the elevator scene where Det. Casals (Magwa) unloads the 00 Buck in his Mossberg 590 in exchange for breaching rounds before they blow the hinges off the hotel room door. Michael Mann does not fuck around.
Just like in “Den of Thieves” which is an another Los Angles based heist movie. Anyways, the lead LEO in that movie carries a SCAR 16S at the end of the film.
I used the mP5 extensively in the British Royal Marines it’s literally indestructible and highly accurate / effective at short to medium ranges. Great little tool.
As cringe as his performance was in the movie things started making sense after I saw that Pacino’s character was supposed to have a coke problem in the movie. They filmed it with that in mind and decided afterwards to cut that out. At least for this one movie it explains his erratic behavior.
I can’t really bash on the FNC since even the AR-15 sucked when it first came out. I like my AR-15s but I wouldn’t classify them and the best. I remember being a young Sergeant in Iraq reading in “Stars & Stripes” how in the Army performance test of 2005 that same type of M4 I carried performed at the bottom of the list with most stoppages compared to newer stuff out there. As for the FNC, I think it would be cool if Brownell’s did an FNC for their retro line.
the first AK5 did not have a bolt catch - If we dont talk about pulling it outwards to stay open for inspektion - I think this is proof that I have handled it😀🙂 the later models C and D got it But not with the old magazines. Yeah We bought it, rebuiltet for duoble the money and it kind of...sucked. It fells like a SiG 550 but thats it 😞
yep, self adjusts for whatever ammo is used since the bolt wont unlock until it has reached a safe pressure. So really the delayed roller is even MORE gucci than adjustable gas, since the rifle does it for you
These comments show 1) a misunderstanding of my comments and 2) a misunderstanding of how the roller-delay blowback system works. First, yes, the HK91 doesn't have adjustable gas because it uses a roller delay system. It's like my saying "this car doesn't use spark plugs." Whatever the reason - because it's diesel or electric, whatever - doesn't change the fact that it doesn't use spark plus, so I don't know why this is an "A-HA!" comment. Number 2, some of you seem to think that roller delayed blowback is some sort of self-adjusting gas system. This could not be more untrue, which is why HK manufactures different angle locking pieces. I was going to type an explanation but I found a good one from a random-ass webpage when I Googled it for something to copy-paste instead: "The advantages of roller delayed actions are significant. First, the lighter bolt assembly and reduced bolt velocity mean that felt recoil and muzzle rise are almost non-existent, particularly in pistol calibers and compared to straight blowback. Generally, roller delayed firearms suppress far better than direct blowback as well. [...] *Moving up to centerfire rifle calibers complicates the roller delayed story.* It’s also where the design’s advantages begin to diminish. *Against popular piston and direct impingement systems, delayed blowback is saddled with some serious disadvantages. Remember, blowback guns rely on chamber pressure to operate. There is no gas system to tune. This means that variations in ammunition pressure, barrel length, or adding a suppressor significantly affect cyclic rate on a roller gun.* Sure enough, these also present challenges for competing designs, but their gas systems either self-regulate (to a degree) or can be tuned to match the situation. The best a roller delayed system can do is swap for a different locking piece to extend lockup time. That’s because the angle of the locking piece’s engagement surfaces determines how much force is needed to move the part. Thus, a more acute angle extends lockup while an obtuse one allows the breech to open sooner. Swapping locking pieces requires at least partial bolt disassembly and is not exactly something that’s ideally done in the field." - www.internationalsportsman.com/how-roller-delayed-firearms-work-and-why-it-matters/

In fact none of these 2 movies were his first which actually took place nearly 10 years earlier in movies like The Hidden, Death Wish, Lock Up, Bulletproof, Runaway Train to name a few.
Runaway Train was his first. He was cast because he showed up to set to support his N/A sponsee who worked there. Eddie Bunker recognized him, knew he was a boxer, hired him to train Eric Roberts and play his boxing opponent.

FNC for the win. That rifle is underrated in civilian market. Maybe I'm biased though, because it is my country current service rifle along with the Pindad SS-2.
@@factsoftheconfederacy7151 Maybe it's time to change two parties system into multi party system (more than two parties). We need more pro gun politicians, not just in the US but worldwide. The FN FNC din't suck ass. It's actually a good rifle and if it wasn't good, do you think the Swedes would take it? Sweden is a very cold place and if the FNC din't work, they'd simply break apart and that's the end of FN but no, the Swedes are still using the FNC as their standard rifle as the Ak5. Indonesia is also a massive adopter of the FNC now being locally made by Pindad. What's the hate with the FNC? The NATO trails it went thru was bust because the gun was rushed off for the trails even before the issue was fixed but once it was done up properly post-trail, it worked.

@@Sig_P229 Reeves really don't like it and I bet he's not mistaking it with the 60's huge flop FN CAL (the FNC is already a product of the 70's and it replaced in Belgium and some other countries the venerable FN FAL - in Sweden took the first line combat rifle as the ak-5 replacing their variant of the G3, the Ak-4 now only used by the Swedish Home Guard after overhaul - stocks, aimpoints, rails, the best known is the SPUHR but without the aimpoints)
I grew up in the 80's and was mesmerized by the total package Michael Mann gave the world with Miami Vice, from the look of everything, the music that was featured, the characters. Heat is my #1 favorite movie of all time. Love your commentary on the long guns-- and such hilarious commentary it was-- great sense of humor-- awesome video !!!!!!!!!
I just watched heat again for like the 500th time with my best friend the other night who had never seen it and he couldn’t believe how well the movie held up even after a quarter century
My dude... Love your review but I take exception to one point. Norinco. Norinco is hit and miss on some platforms however they make a great 1911 and they actually bought up the machining parts (so I heard) to make the M14/Springfield M1A from Springfield armoury. There are a number of friend of mine in Canada that report the M305 (that is their designation for the M1A) has sub MOA accuracy and the same reliability as the original straight out of the box. Norinco, though Chinese and often makes garbage, should not be underestimated! Now, as a true Canadian, I must sign off proper... THANKS for your work and SORRY for contradicting you. :)
You nailed the weapons perfectly once again my friend, a quite enjoyable & informative profile of the long-guns in one of my favorite films! I'm a big fan & owner of HK guns & love the MP5 & the 91 but there's so much more to dig in this killer movie gun-wise! Every Christmas my wife & I visit family in Orange County but we reserve a high floor room with a fantastic LA view at the Bonaventure Hotel there where I enjoy walking those shoot-out locations. Thanks for the 2nd part of the "Heat" weapons breakdown, the highlight to my week!
I love James has to ruin a perfectly good video for having some ridiculous opinion about some gun (FNC). Literally do a millisecond of research and you'll find the FNC is a very venerable rifle that's very reliable and still sees use by Sweden as the AK5. There's literally nothing wrong with it except that it's heavy lmao
James,, you realize the FNC is an AKM, right? I dig your review but I gotta throw the challenge flag on this one. You gave love to the AKM in the same vid, rightly so, but the FNC is swell made AKM. Yes, rip the gun apart and you will instantly recognize the long stroke piston/bolt carrier assembly, same as a Valmet or a Sig 540. Sorry gotta throw the flag. I’m not trading a Valmet for it, but I don’t buy that it sucks. Agree with everything else you said. I remember the North Hollywood bank robbery. I was driving from N Hollywood to Burbank. Saw a long line of police cars going the opposite direction. Ironically, my niece would end up working at the same bank years later. Great movie!
Best part about heat, the guns actually eject the shells. I've seen alot of movies and shows like twd, that the guns just shoot without the action cycling or the shells being ejected.
Yep. No blanks, pure CG. Looks like shit up close and the actors don’t even pretend to be managing recoil. I enjoyed TWD but it was a little painful watching those parts as a gun guy haha.
I mean, when they made this film CGI was still an embryo and stupidly expensive (remember, Jurassic Park came just 2 years before this move and was probably the first movie to have really good CG which inflated the budget more than the animatronics)...it wouldn't be far-fetched to say that at the time having the guns shoot blanks would have been less expensive than having them not shoot at all and then add gunfire and muzzle flashes in post
I actually like the ending. It’s true that McCauley becomes a sympathetic character, but he’s a flawed one. He and his men murder police and endanger bystanders. He breaks his own rules to seek revenge. And it’s precisely when he learns to love that his dangerous lifestyle catches up with him. His character arc is a tragic one, but I wouldn’t have any other ending.
@@southernmarksman cops murder too. Just like the character but I really life. Rampart, new Orleans, Chicago, Baltimore, long Beach miss. List goes on and on.
In "Heat" almost all weapons are appropriate, not from the point of view of efficiency, but the logic of the event. The logic is that things didn't go according to plan. This is an extraordinary situation. SWAT use Hk5 because they usually storm buildings. Val Kilmere's character doesn't try to kill all the cops, he suppresses them. Every situation has an explanation
A correction regarding the North Hollywood B of A shootout- The second gunman was taken down by SWAT. The first, the more determined and aggressive of the two, was cornered and taken down by handgun armed detectives and patrol officers after his Norinco 56 stove piped.
it is up to debate whether the police round in the neck killed him or whether the shot under his chin out the top of his head killed him first. It was not very bright of them to walk into the bank with their masks already on and their guns out, as that is what caught the attention of a passing police car, not to mention wasting valuable time trying to shoot the locks off the ATMs. Absent a nearby underground parking lot to switch getaway cars, I think they were doomed because helicopters had them in sight. Larry pulling out a full auto .308 in the parking lot was a nice touch..... lol
Come on man..... My son and I watched a bunch of heist movies Heat, The Town etc... and while Heat was/is hella long... it is hands down the best heist movie ever made.
Just remembered this, so in the NoHo Bank Robbery in the 90s, one Robber had a full auto Norinco and the other had a full auto Bushmaster X16, but they did have two other Type 56s in Semi Auto
Re: Pacino’s FNC, in Hollywood Movie Logic, the most practical answer is not always the best one. In this case that’s because as one of the film’s 2 leads, it was a worthwhile endeavor to give him a unique, distinctive looking gun and not another AR despite how this might rankle gun nerds watching the movie.

I remember him back in Deathwish 4 back in like 1987
Also, he was in Blood in, Blood out with a speaking role, and also Desperado. Not taking anything from this great video though .

Michael Mann was always good with guns in his films all the way back to "Thief" in 1980. Great video!

Does anyone else find it a little ironic that none of the glocks in the “glock perfection” ad have the stock sights
🤫 it's "perfect"
Not really, since they sell them that way and have for a long time.
No….I also don’t find it Ironic when vehicle manufacturers run ads showing products loaded with options either though.
Not really. I think the Glock haters and fans lean too hard on that "perfection" line without understanding what marketing is. Guns usually aren't perfect out of the box so it makes sense to customize them for your needs and wants after you figure out what you want to optimize it.
Nope.
Dude this video is awesome. ‘The lead singer of System of a Down”, “FN-WTF”, and whatever the fuck else you said had me rolling. Heat is one of my favorite movies ever. Thanks for this!
"and a mildly irritated CPA courier", hahaha.
That Colt Commando is part of the reason why I fell in love w AR platforms
I prefer cal kilmers CAR
AUG is still "the Die Hard gun" to so many people. More than the Beretta 92 or MP5.
HEAT is still one of my all-time favorites. I still love it, and if you have a good surround sound system, crank it up!!

Pretty sure the FNC was chosen soley because it looks cool.
The main “good guy” gotta have a unique weapon.
Just like in “Den of Thieves” which is an another Los Angles based heist movie. Anyways, the lead LEO in that movie carries a SCAR 16S at the end of the film.

As cringe as his performance was in the movie things started making sense after I saw that Pacino’s character was supposed to have a coke problem in the movie. They filmed it with that in mind and decided afterwards to cut that out. At least for this one movie it explains his erratic behavior.
The Swedish militay adopted the FN FNC but modified it and added a bolt catch among other things its called AK5 (Automatkarbin 5 )
Sweden is so weird. Lol
@@hansgruber9685 And why is that ?
I can’t really bash on the FNC since even the AR-15 sucked when it first came out. I like my AR-15s but I wouldn’t classify them and the best. I remember being a young Sergeant in Iraq reading in “Stars & Stripes” how in the Army performance test of 2005 that same type of M4 I carried performed at the bottom of the list with most stoppages compared to newer stuff out there. As for the FNC, I think it would be cool if Brownell’s did an FNC for their retro line.
the first AK5 did not have a bolt catch - If we dont talk about pulling it outwards to stay open for inspektion - I think this is proof that I have handled it😀🙂
the later models C and D got it But not with the old magazines.
Yeah We bought it, rebuiltet for duoble the money and it kind of...sucked. It fells like a SiG 550 but thats it 😞
What kind of loser doesn't like "Heat"? It's a great flick.
"HK91 doesn't have adjustable gas" because it's a roller delayed blowback.
Yup. The MP5 is blowback operated too.
yep, self adjusts for whatever ammo is used since the bolt wont unlock until it has reached a safe pressure. So really the delayed roller is even MORE gucci than adjustable gas, since the rifle does it for you
"We don't need gas systems where we're going"
Yeah that line made me cringe hard...

Larry pulling out a full auto .308 in the parking lot was a nice touch..... lol
