This patchwork bag is super cute and easy to make especially if you are new to sewing. It includes an inside pocket and an optional magnetic clasp to hold it all together. They look gorgeous and you won't want to stop at one.
This is a really easy tote bag tutorial but it makes an awesome looking bag. And you don't need to go out and purchase charms squares for this. Just cut up some of your fabric into 5in x 5in squares and you will have your own charm squares.

🤗 EUREKA!!!!!! I finally found a video I can understand. I'm a beginner at sewing and I've been trying to figure out how to add the batting/ interface, straps and see it altogether for the last 3weeks. THANK YOU THANK YOU THANK YOU!!!! Subscribing rt now 😜
+sharon roshell That's awesome feedback Sharon. So happy we could help. :)
You just don't know how happy I was, I promise it was like a light bulb went off. As soon as I finished watching the video again. I grab my materials and got to work. I was able to finish the project that had me on the ledge ready to jump... Heheee, no it just had my frustrated and confused🙃. But Thanks to you! I actually got it done!
Im so movitated from watching your videos Im in the process of working on my next project. 💕💕💕💕 your videos.... Thank you again 🌻
this 2024 and iv just watched this video for the bag iv got all my squares cut out ready for sewing im making a bag for myself to carry my medications around with me for when i got crafting or sewing but i think when my family see it they will want one also x thankyou for a very easy to follower video x
Excellent Jacqueline 😊. This is a useful and practical bag to make. I agree, I think once you have made yours you will receive requests for more. And that's a good thing 😊. Here is a link to the blog post that shows the layout of the squares. www.alandacraft.com/2014/09/29/super-cute-moda-charm-square-tote-bag-tutorial/
I have enjoyed this tutorial for several reasons, the most because i don't have to watch every stitch being done. I do love the interior fabric being one piece, it gives more stability to the patchwork since it has pressed open seams. Love it. I just subscribed.
carylanne rosten Thank you Carlyanne. I agree with you, there is nothing more frustrating than watching prolonged stitching. I have made so many of these bags for gifts and everyone who gets one, loves them.
Alanda Craft lol just watched another of your toots , one on towel bags. h e he glad you no longer show the stitching and pinning.great job.
I love how you explain everything and show what you are doing. It makes it easier for a beginner like me. Thank you for taking time explaining things so clearly!
Thank you Kathy. Glad you like the tutorials. We also have the written instructions for most of our tutorials on the website as well. www.alandacraft.com :)
This was SOOO easy to follow. Thank You! I made one for my mother for Mother's Day.
Awesome, your mum is going to love it. Maybe you would like to share some photos of your mum and your bag with us. 🙂 Here is a link if you would like to do that www.alandacraft.com/submit-your-project/
This is a great tutorial! I made one last weekend and it turned out really cute. One thing I did was to use regular batting instead of the fusible fleece and did some free motion quilting to secure it together before assembling. I will definitely be making more of these!
Sheila R Thank you Sheila. And that's the beauty of this bag is that regular batting works just as well as the fusible fleece. We would love to see your finished bag, so if you would like to share some photos with our readers on our website. Here is the link to our 'Readers Projects' page www.alandacraft.com/submit-your-project/
Thank you! I think I’ll make me one of these tonight but remove the top row to make it shorter..and more of a purse than a tote. 😃 love it.
What a great idea. 😊
Sublime Gorgeous Stunning. Wow that was truly amazing. So well explained with easy to follow step by step instructions super closeups and a soft voice to blend in. The bag looked IMPOSSIBLE to make for beginner. I've gotta try this. Really cute and adorable. I also learnt at the same time PATCHWORK. The handle is solid too. I love this tutorial. Thanks for sharing and caring. 😀😀😀👍👍👍

Can I say every time you pin something I get nervous. I am worried you're going to stick yourself. lol that's what a beginner I am. I'm nervous about being stuck. Thank you for teaching such wonderfully amazing crafts You inspire me
Thank you for your lovely comments Vitoria. You will love how easily this bag goes together, and they look great when they are finished. Believe me I have managed to pin myself more than a few times, but I keep a supply of plasters on hand so I don't bleed on the projects :). Seriously though it's just a matter of paying attention and taking your time.

Love this I’m going to learn how to do the snap
I really like the way this bag came together, just not the size. Too big for me and would make a longer handle to use as over the body. May make this. Thanks for the tutorial. Very good.

Glad you like it Vijaya. :)
This is a fantastic tutorial, very easily understood and well-planned! I can’t wait to go make a bag now! P.S. I am terribly embarrassed, but I accidentally tapped the thumbs-down, so please disregard that - I have no idea how anyone could intentionally do that... Thank you!
Thank you for your lovely comment. You should be able to change the thumbs down to a thumbs up by clicking on thumbs up icon. It's easy to do, I have done it myself in the past. Glad you like the bag, it is so easy to make and they do look lovey when they are finished. 😀
Thanks, and I did the up-thumb! I made your origami bag last week and loved that, too. It is stashed away for Christmas.. 🤶🏻

You can certainly add two handles, we have other bag tutorials on how to do this. Thank you for you lovely comment. :)

love this!
cheryl malone They are so easy to make Cheryl and they look awesome.
I've just discovered magic clips would make this project faster great tutorial I'd love to make this with all my scraps. Just wondering when you sew the charms is the zig zag the end of where you are using your seam? I haven't used a lot of charm squares
We measure from the top of the Hill for Moda Charm Squares. Here is a link to our post about charm squares that may help you www.alandacraft.com/2019/08/05/the-secret-life-of-charm-squares/
This is a great tutorial. Can you please show us how to make this bag with a zip. Thanks 😃
awesome!
Gracias ...bello trabajo
Gracias Maria. 🙂
nice
Thank you 😊
I have made many bags, however wanted to put snaps on 1 I’m making for me. Thank You for your very clear instructions!! May I ask what batting/ interfacing you use?? Seems much thicker than what I use and works good with bags. Thank You
For this bag we used Pelon Fusible Thermolam, but we often use Warm and Natural batting from the Warm Company for our bags. Both of these products are available on Amazon.
@@alandacraftThank You sew much. How did we ever survive without Amazon and UA-cam ??
Absolutely 😊
u so amazing, I enjoying ur tutorial. thank u so much
Thank you Selly.
Can u make one with frayed squares? Can u do a video please.
+Elanda Shields Definitely Elanda. we have been meaning to do both a quilt and a bag with frayed edges. So those tutorials will be coming up in the near future.
Hello, what is the finished size of the tote bag please?
awesome! thanks.
Now to pick out which charm pack I want to use. Hmmmm.... see you later!
Hahaha, there are so many beautiful packs available it's going to be hard to decide. Have fun 😀
Ok...another silly question. I pin the fabric together, but the top fabric still bunches when I sew it....how do I avoid that?
Using a walking foot will help with bunching. You could also try reducing your tension slightly, test on a practice sample and see how that goes. You can also use a basting spray such as 505 between the layers, and pin the layers securely, this will help hold the layers in place.
could you make it wider by adding another row of 5" squares
I don't see why you couldn't do that.
What are the final bag measurements please when completed? Height? Length? Width? Depth?
The measurements are on the website Dianne. Here is the link www.alandacraft.com/2014/09/29/super-cute-moda-charm-square-tote-bag-tutorial/
hi guys im also an Aussie, where in Aus are you? love love this bag, can you tell me please what size are the squares, I want to use up my scraps, thank you so much easy to follow for a beginner.xx
Can we make this into ragquilt bag
I can't see why not Lalitha. We are considering doing a tutorial on that concept now that you have mentioned it. Rag bags are so cute.
Silly question, but when you are sewing the squares together in the begining, do you back stich the ends?
Not a silly question at all Robin. It's not really necessary to backstitch as the pieced seams will be caught up or intersect with another seam that keeps everything together. Start and stop your stitching a couple of stitches beyond the end of the square. Chain piecing also helps with this. You can also use a smaller stitch to start and end. But to answer your question - no I don't backstitch.
Alanda Craft , thank you so much for replying. I recently made your tote, I love how easy you make everything. I was always taught to back stitch, now I understand why you don't need to. Keep the videos coming, I love them!
May I ask what the fabric is for the bright bag hanging up, love the bag thank you.
That bag is made up of Kaffee Fassett fabrics. Just search for his name in Google Image search and you find all of his fabrics. He always has really vibrant patterns. I love them.
Thank you I have a look
If I don't have fusible fleece can I use SF 101?
I haven't used SF101 Mindy, but I can't see why not. You can also use batting.
@@alandacraft Thank you for a response. I was able to buy fusible fleece today. ❤ I'll give it a try! Thank you for a beautiful tutorial. I love this design!
Do you have printed instructions to go along with the video?
On our website we have basic instructions on how to lay out the squares and what you need - www.alandacraft.com/super-cute-moda-charm-square-tote-bag-tutorial/
What is the type of material used? Polyester, cotton.....
Alanda Craft Thank you! I really enjoy your videos. Yours are by far the best and I have been able to make several of the couching bags for Christmas gifts. This will be my next project 😁
Thank you for your lovely comment LisaMarie. We would love to see your bags on our Readers Projects page. Here is a link if you would like to share some photos www.alandacraft.com/submit-your-project/ :)
what is the finished size of this?
It measures approx. 13 1/2" x 13 1/2".
The
I'm not finding this as easy to understand. she skips thru some steps and doesn't explain. jumping from step to step and the camera should be on the material not the person talking. I wanted to see what how it should look but couldn't. now I have to go back over it several times.
i thought it was pretty thorough
marsbeads Yes very pretty! I think this is one of the first bag videos that I learned from. Since then I've made a LOT more! So much fun!!
ik versta er niks van
