Okay, so it turns out we've been barking up the wrong tree so to speak. The city counsil meeting on the 27th is actually the meeting everyone should go to! This has more to do with community disputes, rather than legal issues, which is what the meeting on the 16th was about.

I'm so glad you're talking about this! Marvin's is about a mile from my house. I've been going there for more than 25 years. I've had birthday parties there. I do repairs for them all the time. I designed their menu and have done graphics work for them. The manager is a dear friend, and Marvin was exactly everything you wanted him to be. He used to hang out there almost every day, just schmoozing with the folks who came in, joking and laughing and telling stories. Once, when I was a child, my brother and I won one of those prepaid cell phones from one of the machines (that dates me a bit lol), and Marvin saw we were arguing over who would get it. He immediately opened up the machine, put the phone back, and handed us something else from the same machine- a set of walkie-talkies. We were about 9 and 6 at the time, and my parents were so happy he stepped in, because no way in hell were they going to give either one of us a cell phone at that age! And the walkie-talkies were so cool! We used them all the time! Marvin also used to hand out tickets to kids, just randomly, and give out prizes and candy for nothing. He just loved being there and seeing people have fun. So many of my friends have worked there over the years. It's my favorite place. You'd better believe I'll be at that city council meeting tomorrow. I'm gonna make sure they know just how many people love this place. It's on all the road signs, for goodness sake! It's our only attraction in this city (besides the Holocaust Center, which, while wonderful and important, is not exactly a fun time). They'd be destroying a true gem, a fun gathering place for families, and the most unique thing in this whole metro area, all for another Meijer. Fuck that. Meijer sucks, and we don't need another one. There's already one about fifteen minutes away. There are thousands of them across the US. There's only one Marvin's. I'm going to try and get a group of friends together to go to the meeting tomorrow. City Council needs to see how many people are passionate about this! Also, not to be cynical, but there's got to be a financial angle for City Council. Meijer is not a tourist spot. It is not unique. It does not bring anything special to the area. And Marvin's is BELOVED by locals. The place almost closed during the COVID shutdown, and local donations kept it afloat. THAT is how much we love it. I hope the Council members know that this will cost them their re-elections, and if they have any hopes of higher office, good luck. We'll never forget that you tried (and hopefully will fail!) to destroy the heart of our community, and we'll never let the rest of the voting public forget it either.
TL;DR: Marvin's is the heart of my town, and I am utterly disgusted with City Council for trying to be so sneaky about this. And fuck Meijer for even trying it.

Thank you so much for talking about this. I am a huge fan of MMMM and was sobbing yesterday when I found out about this. This place means a lot to me even though I only visited it once (I plan on going again before it potentially closes) it left a huge impact on me. I am a local in the area and I appreciate you talking about this so much. Truly, thank you.
EDIT: I feel it's also worth noting how much this building means to the Tally Hall community. Tally Hall is a band that named their first album off of this building and as a fan I would hate to see it torn down.

The city wanting to replace it with a meijer of all things is like the family adventure movie villians idea for a young girls beloved quirky hang out spot. just barely below the level of evil as replacing it with a puppy murder factory or a golf course. Society is headed towards complete homogeneity in the favor of the vague and indefinite goal of "profit". I hope everyone who can makes it out there and makes a difference!

This museum is such a beautiful and wholesome place. While we were there, Quinton and I signed the guestbook and it felt so special to do so because there were signatures dating back to Marvin’s passing, it was like I was leaving my mark on a piece of history. Knowing that they’re trying to erase that, and so soon after our visit too, is a personal slight. I hope Marvin’s is here to stay

Meijer seems to have a strategy of buying out old malls and replacing them - they tore down and replaced a mall in the college town close to me (in Ohio, too, so close-ish geographically). The only movie theater in town was in that mall, as well as a small comic store and a few bigger name stores that were still doing fine. Now everything that was in that mall is either gone, across town, or moved into the Walmart down the road, oddly enough. I really hope this places local community is able to save such a gem!!! It seems awesome despite my irrational fear of animatromics lol.

We were really never meant to know they were doing this but hopefully now they’ll be taken for a ride by the community and the bidding of these greedy individuals won’t be done, otherwise it’ll be hidden in the sand and we’ll need a Time Machine to see it again

the slow destruction of public fun places for all ages is so lame. between greedy corporate fuckwads and the rage of a hurricane, my town has jackshit besides minigolf these days. arcades are gone, no more fun mueseums or exhibits, the niche mom & pop stores have closed. everything is becoming so dreary in favor of more coporate concrete, i really hope the local & global community can pull together and save this place and any other local oddities that may be in danger.

Also, I am another person who only knows this place from the Tally Hall album, but that's because I don't live in America. I when people in UA-cam comments said Marvin died back in 2017 I was pretty sure they also said the museum was closed, but I must have been misremembering. I guess the Tally Hall mall was the thing which was closed.

Apparently the current manager is in talks with the landlord and city about it but they want him to just move to a new location. Which not only are people upset with due to it being practically a historical site at this point, but also nobody seems to have considered how fragile some of this stuff is. It’s a miracle it lasted this long and made it to Marvin’s to begin with, I wouldnt trust everything to survive another trip across town

The bad news is that the demolition will be moving forward. The good news is that Martin's has no plans of closing, just moving (location undecided as of yet). Through (very poor) communication with the realtor that bought the land, Marvin's has to move by the end of the year, and that's all the owner knows for sure.

People coming out to the city council meeting tomorrow night! They have a public commentary period and hopefully if enough people give them a hard time, they'll go away.
Meijer was recently chased out of nearby cities (like Livonia) by doing the same thing. This is not the first time they have tried to buy up and demolish a historic building to build another Meijer.
Detroit has so much open/empty/abandoned land AND it's a food desert; they could easily build a Meijer there and do a lot of good for the community but they don't want to.

No! The Meijer must go in this exact location to fulfill the Meijer family prophecy!

Let me get this straight - officials in DETROIT are concerned about the complex Marvin's is in needing a "face-lift".
Yeah sorry, I think you all have bigger eyesores to worry over than that.

took me this long to realize the tally hall place was real despite the fact I'm a animatronics fan who definitely should've known of this thing on it's own by now

i lived near marvin's 3m for the first 22 years of my life and loved going there. i remember many a time of my friends and i all planning a spur of the moment trip to marvin's just to enjoy the interior and play some games that weren't too common at other arcades ( there was always a couple of japanese import games, i loved getting to play groove coaster without having to drive an hour+ to go to round one ). it is incredibly out of touch to consider demolishing it, i can't believe they'd want to throw away 45 years of history to build *yet another* meijer, identical to the thousand other in the state. i wish there was something more to do, its so scummy they're trying to sneak this by without anyone noticing. if i still lived there, i'd be showing up to that council meeting and defending marvin's with all my heart.
i really, really hope they're able to pull through this like they were with the bankruptcy scare during the covid lockdowns, maybe even arrange a gofundme or something to afford them moving instead of being demolished. thanks so much for bringing attention to this, i wouldn't have even known it was happening if not for this video. damn :[

It's incredible because my mom came to visit me in Michigan lately and we went to Farmington hills ONLY to see marvins, and then we went to some nearby stores because they were also there- but if Marvin's hadn't been there we wouldn't have spent our money in that city at all. It was the only decent tourist-y thing we could do that was indoors and didn't involve alcohol or lazer tag. It's such a dumb decision just overall economics wise

What a cool place! I would def watch a longer or more informative video about it. Hope it finds a new home. 😢 That area is probably gonna be sad to lose those tourism dollars. No one is driving a hundred miles to go to Meijer.

Marvin's is one of the coolest places you could ever go. I went once every day when staying with my Grandma. They have some the rarest, coolest, and quirkiest animatronics, show pieces, statues, and interactive experiences. Literally if you haven't been there you should in fact go

I don't know how many times I've witnessed places unique to an area or hold some value to people who grew up around it that have their own personality or character get torn down to create something so bland and uninspired and boring. It's so god damn frustrating. It reaks of people with get rich quick schemes or things like that. People who don't understand what they are doing. It's fucking redundant and we don't need it anymore.

I had no idea people outside of Michigan know about Marvins. This is one of the last real places around. First they tore down the Main Theater in Royal Oak, now they're talking about this. The planning commission meeting is at 7:30. Looks like I'm heading there in 3 hours.
