prerunnerwannabe it will increase the boost threshold between gears (lag) slightly, but with the small frame turbo you are using I doubt it's even noticeable
That's compressor surge, at higher boost levels it will snap the shaft and send the exhaust side into someone's front window. The car needs to have a bov for the air to be sent to the atmosphere.
Tyler Spor Ived seen a couple of builts with no BOV specially on the GNX grand national .. idk about taking it off my Audi but hey this dudes focus sounds nice ..
Man, if I did it on my 9-3 I'd have some issues. The T5 cars like yours do fine with atmospheric but my T7 would be very unhappy if I didn't run the recirculation valve.
You can potentially harm the turbocharger but from what I've seen in first hand experience is the higher boost pressures .8-1.0 bar and above is when reaaalll harm comes about! All worth it for some surge though ey!
YO! Just found your channel.. and you turbo's a focus?! Holy shyte!!!!! This is awesome hahaha... Subscribed, going to checkout your other videos now!!!
NinjaxBart Haha thanks man! I'll get some updated videos posted hopefully pretty soon. But my editing PC took a dump so I need to wait a bit until some funds roll in so I can fix/upgrade it.
If you think about it, the Pioneers of Turbocharging, (Saab), never had Dump Valves until 1985, and they were mass producing full blown turbo cars from 1975 and they never killed the turbos. Ive had 8 Saabs turbos and all have been great. You are only running low factory boost, so no worries. Only issue is the compressor stall will now give you a bit of lag between gear changes.
You’re talking about compressor surge, which sounds cool but will destroy the turbo over time. The pressurized charge of air inside of your intake piping/intercooler has to vent somewhere, now it’s rushing back into the compressor side of your turbo. :(
In all honesty most blow off valves aren’t necessary. The sound is basically just “turbo bark” and unless you’re really putting out high boost levels most bearings can handle it fine
From somebody that builds 1.8 turbo vws for fun. The diverter valve is not supposed to be used like that. It doesn’t function well as a blow off valve because it does not stay closed under vacuum like a blow off valve does. There’s no spring tension or adjustability. If you use it use it the way it was intended. I mean you are running a mass airflow so if you’re venting to the atmosphere you are venting metered air? I don’t know where your mass airflow is on your setup?
Yeah, I quit using the diverter valve and installed an actual BOV. The valve is before the MAF, so it's not metered air that was getting expelled. Thanks for making sure I wasn't doing anything *too* seriously stupid :)
I like to see that someone still fucks with the old focuses, i plan on doing a v-8 swap into mine in a couple of years. will be putting videos up to show what we had to do to get it to work
i agree it sounds sick, but the flutter sound is actually all the excess air scrambling to find a way out of the system when you stop accelerating, so i wouldnt recommend it. get an actual blow off/diverter valve intstead.
Each Choo is the turbo wheel racking back and forth because it cant compress the air thru the throttle body plate. Eventually a snapped shaft is coming.
turbo flutter from no bov isnt going to blow your turbo immediatley unless its already shit, but i will put more stress on it causing shaft play. there is a reason for using a bov.
If you’re only running 3lbs and 6 currently, that diverter valve isn’t going to snap open and recirculate unless you found a way to open it and swap springs, looks like a factory VW diverter valve, could be wrong though. If your diverter is post MAF, you’re going to wanna recirculate that rather than vent it anyway, it’s already accounted for that air. Deleting it has its pros and cons and everyone’s got an opinion about it, I mean it’s there for a reason but there are people that get away without it no issues. I would be more consciences with that pressure going up against a closed throttle body. There are hybrids you can use that divert and blow off a portion and if you tighten it down a little more than your boost point, you’ll blow off and get your flutter you like.
Trevor Judson The job of a blow off valve is simply to release the pressure that builds up in all the plumbing before the throttle body. What controls the boost is a device called a wastegate :)
Hey thanks man! I really don't know how much power I was making. . . I'm at about 6 psi now and I bet it's around 170whp/tq. The torque shove is the best part for sure :)

How did you get the turbo set up running such low boost? I thought that most turbos ran at 6-7psi on waste gate? I'd be interested in turboing my celica but can't afford forging my engine if I could run 3-4 psi I think it would be fine though
It's a mix of being at a high enough elevation that it subtracts about 2psi, as well as an old, uncalibrated wastegate. When a wastegate actuator rod is threaded you can adjust the preload. Usually they're set to about three turns of preload and mine was at zero. Hopefully that helps a bit :)
Nice! I got about 7.7 seconds to 60. Not bad for 3psi. That took a little over 2 seconds off of the stock 0-60 time. You should find 10psi real fun, if you decide to turn it up that far. :) What rpm does that turbo spool up at? Looked like just over 3000 rpm from what I can tell. Thanks! And since I'm at a high altitude, it was more like 11 seconds 0-60 when I was NA lol. murcC47 I'm not sure what exactly you're referring to with 10 g and 20 g, but I'm at around $2k into the turbo system, and I didn't really have any power goals. I could just turn up the boost until a rod snapped, but I mostly just wanted to have a boosted daily driver :)
Holy fuck........dude your place is fucking awesome, those mountains in the background, damn.......would be killer place for a joint!!!
Will it flutter like this with a auto focus?
It should! Closing off the throttle body creates back pressure regardless of what transmission is attached!
Thanks man
Did you have any Problem with that.
Nope. I ended up installing a BOV, but I am confident that it would have been fine.
@@prerunnerwannabe ok Thank you but way you install agan the sound is so good with out.
@@manueljaha5861 You are right! The guy that tuned the car said I should install a BOV, so I followed his advice. I should have just left it off lol
I did this to my 2005 subaru impreza and it sounds amazing
Daffydd Price Nice! :)
prerunnerwannabe thanks
Yo fr? Could you like answer sum questions for me? I'm trying to do it too on my 2002 impreza
How is it after this long
I ended up selling the car a couple of years ago, so I have no idea unfortunately.
Look at those mountains!
The dog was the best part of this
I really want a turbo mk1 focus now
that sound is an orgasm for my hatreds, sounds incredible! how much money did you spend including the turbo?
Lol, thanks man!
I specifically did everything I could to put this together as cheaply as possible while still being reliable. That being said, I spend just under $2000 when all said and done. It would be a little hard to replicate again though haha.
prerunnerwannabe
If you are right, do everything possible to not spend a lot of money, but you are doing very well and I hope you continue to improve ...
I drove mine without BOV for 20K miles , 12 PSI and no issues with the turbo at all :D .... btw I got th video with the cam bolted under the hood :D
Alex R. Nice dude! Did you tune your MX5 yourself?
prerunnerwannabe yup
that recirc valve off a jetta?
obscure visuals It's actually from an Audi, but it's basically the same thing :)
If ur only running a few psi then u have nothing to worry about anyways. And I like the way u think. U will survive if u have to replace it in 5 years 😂😂👍
What turbo kit is it and is the ford a 4cyl or 3cyl?
Sr20det GT3071r at 18psi, could i run no bov ?
Dubstep Baws With that much boost, I would personally run a BOV. I feel that the higher the psi you go, the harder it is on the turbo to deal with the backed up pressure.
prerunnerwannabe many people say it depends on the turbo you got and bearing in it. Not sure tho but the stutututu is bae
Dubstep Baws Yeah, that's pretty fair to say. If you're willing to take the risk, give it a try!
Just subscribed. You was on my recommended
Awesome, thanks man!
Haha we all gotta love stutu’s lol
