The First 10 Days of Fish Training

- I've just begun training my goldfish Blaze, and he's well on his way to becoming a well trained fish!
We've been training using an R2 fish training kit, and so far he knows how to follow the feeding wand around the tank and how to swim through the hoop. I've been gradually making the hoop smaller, soon he'll have to squeeze to get through!

@BeardieDragonGirl
Yes! It does work.
@magicmanaic888 The pink part is the part of the wand that holds the food. You stick the food in there and then when you push on the top of the wand, the pink part pops back out, releasing the food.
all this things can you make yourself and it really works
@magicmanaic888 The hoop came with the R2 fish school package. The R2 fish school kit is a great deal-- it includes a feeding wand, props for a variety of tricks, and instruction booklet and an instructional DVD.
@Coolsomtastic -- Just google R2 fish school. They sell the wands individually or as part of a training kit. The kit sells for about $30. It includes the feeding wand, the props for the tricks, written instructions, as well as a DVD that explains how to teach about a dozen tricks. Mary
Having the wand and R2 fish school kit will definitely help you out! The training kit (which includes a feeding wand) is fairly inexpensive.

I think its quite easy on how easy fish reacts to the master. Like all fishes they react anything that has light yes even sharks. The R2 fishing gear has a stick which illuminate lights flashing through the fishes eyes making it think its food or something interesting. For example the angler fish has an antanne which attracts its prey with a whtie light.
That would be something to try!
Interestingly, it has been done with dolphins. Karen Pryor talks about it in her book "Lads Before the Wind." They trained dolphins to play a soccer-like game and then put them together and let them have at it. Apparently the animals were super competitive and the trainers had to end the game and separate the animals before anyone got hurt.

@brickstudios1000 I'm not sure.
If you google R2 fish school, they sell a training kit (for ~$30) or the individual wands (for $13)
~Mary
@vaimoanaeves just google R2 fish school. They sell the kit for about $30. It includes the feeding wand, the props for the tricks, written instructions, as well as a DVD that explains how to teach about a dozen tricks. Mary
@Shinbunto Not sure how you would go about making your own want. As I told a previous person who left a comment, if you google R2 Fish School, they sell the wands for $13 (last time I checked).
They also sell a training kit that comes with a DVD and items for tricks (hoop, basket ball goal, etc.) The hoop and other items for tricks could easily be made out of pieces of plastic and plastic tubing.
I used betta pellets for training my goldfish. A variety of foods can work, you just need to be careful the fish doesn't get too much food.
@JeanStarCookieXD
I think the wand looks like a net, so many fish are afraid at first.
A few suggestions
Try leaving wand in there for a day or so.
Feed the fish without the wand, but have the wand in the tank at the same time. Hold the wand just under the surface, and feed the fish a pellet away from the wand. Gradually decrease the distance between wand and food, until you can start feeding pellets from the wand. Hope that works. If you need more help, we have a fish training google group.
@evelinemiljoen thanks for commenting.
Training does not have to occur over consecutive days. However, it might be easier for you to be consistent & remember what you are doing if train on a consistent basis.
Training doesn't take much time, I would use Blaze's food for the day for training. Start by teaching the fish to follow the feeding wand, after that it's easy to teach the fish to swim through the hoop. When I was training Blaze I would train in 5-10 minute sessions several times a week.
I’m using this as a science fair project.
mkay ill try to save up for it then
He's just a regular pet store goldfish! :)
~Mary
Yes, I believe that Blaze was a comet goldfish. He came from a local fish shop. I have tried buying fish at our local Petsmart, but they were all sickly and died.
@VTECsqznN2O
Thanks for commenting. I know several people who have done work w/ cues. It is very possible!!
I was using the tiny little beta pellets. They work really well.
We have a fish training google group -- if you want the link, let me know and I can send it to you.
cheers,
Mary
That fish learn faster than most students in my school
@littlelauren971 You'll have better success if you train your goldfish one at a time, although I do know of people who have trained multiple goldfish at a time. You can always buy an inexpensive tank divider at the pet store to separate your fish during training time.
I am not sure about Danios, I have never owned any of them.
Do a google search for "R2 fish school." They sell a training kit that includes all the equipment as well as instructions for how to teach the tricks. It is pretty cool!
Whether its fun or enjoyable, you're right, I'm not exactly sure.
However, it does make his life more interesting. It's enrichment, such as most modern zoos do. Life is more stimulating if you have to look for or work for your food.
Most fish live in small tanks and have pretty boring lives. He's got a 30 gallon tank and personalized training sessions. I'd like to think he's enjoying life.
Thanks for commenting.
Mary
are you gonna train your fish your so cool
Nice job
Can you make a video on how to make that target stick?
i teach my little fish..:)
Brilliant! Does this have to be 10 consecutive training days, or might it be as wel, like, 10 days over ten weeks spread? I would love to be able to teach my fish new tricks, but I'm afraid I won't have enough time to do so! What do you recommend?
@Deancasser
Hi there,
Thanks for the question! Blaze was just a regular old pet store goldfish. Any kind of fish can be trained! I've heard though, that fish that are bigger / older are generally easier to train.
cheers,
Mary
@cheerioTrainer BTW how did you get the hoop? u made it?Got it from the R2 fish school package or etc. If u made it pls make a tutorial.Thanks!:)
question...have you been able to introduce cues for individual tricks aside from pointing the target at the object you want the fish to interact with?
Iam dabbling with the idea teaching behaviors with target, like shown here, and then transfering the cues to som'thing visual outside the tank, like maybe photos of simple shapes....I'd like to keep my arm out of the tank as Iam dealing with a deeper tank and larger subject :)
can you make a wand or a hoop what materials would you use to make it I got a cichlid and he cool but I what him to be fun. what would u need to make one of these wands or hoops. Drew whats to know too make the fishies go, =)
lol my fishes do the folloing the wand thing but they folo me finger lolz
@101hermitcrab the wands are awesome for delivering small bits of food!
You can buy one for $13 on the R2 fish school website. I'll send you the link in a pm, or just try googling R2 fish school.
Cool fish dude (:
could you make thease
@cheerioTrainer does it really work because i am getting a goldfish for my b-day tomorrow and i would really like to do this.
thanks am gonna try that but do you anything else that the fish would eat and follow cause i have fish food but not the wand
where do you buy the wand i want to buy me one
You see i have a science fair in about 4 wks and im wandering were u get that ???
Could you please send me the link as well? :)
And how r u suppos to teach them all these steps?
What's that pink thing sticking out of the wand?
Is he the "feeder" fish from Petsmart? Because i bought four that look very similar to yours. I believe they are named "comet goldfish" and are mainly used to feed larger fish. Nevertheless I have them as pets, because they are cute! Plus I'm a beginner; so I don't know how well I would do with "Expert" experience type of fish!
51aguilar I have a shumbunken goldfish and a Japanese flag koi in a 40 gallon tank. All goldfish except for the ones with eyeball sacks and the really fat ones are easy to keep. Most comets and common goldfish are breed to be eaten.
What kind of fish is that bro?
What food do you use? I tried flakes but they just float to the top.
Sent you the link in a private message. Let me know if for some reason you don't get it!
that fish is pwns... any cheap way to do this for my goldfish Kingyo? (hes still a little munchkin i believe)
How can we make a feeding wan?
+Grace 110 I'm not sure it would be possible to make one. If you Google R2 fish school, though, you can buy one from their site.
make him swim through a ring of fire
I sent you the link in a private message.
Let me know if for some reason you don't get it.
can this work on a bala shark
lol where did you buy the "Wand"
says the fish trainer
If your tank has just finished cycling, then ammonia and nitrites should have been 0!
