    Keys to growing Long Hair: 1. Moisturize 2. Trim only when necessary 3. Do Not overshampoo 4. Low manipulaton styling 5. Protective styling 6. Do not do your hair when you are stressed out and emotional 7. Be mindful of the accessories you put into your hair 8. Avoid brushes and combs when possible (finger detangle) 9. You are what you so eat healthy, lots of protein 10. Its not a race its a marathon, be patient :o)

    I'm just gonna sum up what she says.
    1. Moisturize your hair. Water, natural oils, butters, etc are good. Dry hair is an invitation to breakage so avoid it.
    2. Trim when it's absolutely necessary. Helps remove split ends and single strand knots (which are common in curly hair) Over trimming doesn't always help. Your hair will grow nice and even but you will see little growth, especially when your cutting off more than you're growing.
    3. Don't over-shampoo. Co-washing is a good alternative to washing your hair. Shampoo strips the natural oils of your hair which you want in your hair. It's good to clean your scalp of dirt but don't over do it. Also try to incorporate co-washing
    4. Low manipulation styling. Your hair is fragile. Be careful with braids, twists, and ponytails. (Braids pulled out my hair in the middle and I don't think it'll grow back so BE CAREFUL) Too tight is too bad.
    5. Protective styling. Very important to give your hair a break.
    6. Don't do your hair when you're stressed out, mad. You'll be more impatient and rough on your hair and like number 4, too rough is too bad.
    7. Be mindful of your hair accessories. Somethings will definitely rip out your hair if secured wrong (bows and clips) Ponytail holders could rip out your hair, especially ones with metal.
    8. Avoid combs and brushes when possible. Finger detangling is the best option, but when used a wide toothed comb and Denman brush are recommended.
    9. You are what you eat. Eat healthy and drink a lot of water. Protein especially
    10. Be patient. It's not a race. It's a marathon. Ignore your hair length and after a while you'll see the growth.
    *UPDATE: The spot where my hair fell out has kinda grown back. It took a full year to grow back and it still isn't even an inch yet. If you'd like an update on how I handled it please let me know.

    I never knew there was so much going on about natural hair, no kidding. I've had my hair cut short for a very long time. I tried going natural three years ago, but I got discouraged and cut it back to my short style, but I just earlier this year decided to grow it again, and now I'm seeing all this, I'm really excited to try something new. Thanks loads to you and all the other ladies out there. I loved you video you did with Carols Daughter products. Awesome

    I started to get bored with my hair and straightened it recklessly. I almost had heat damage. Lucky it sprang back after some treatments. The pressure to straighten at my job is just terrible, and it's mainly from my dad! But I had to stop, I had to snap out of it and remember the goal. Healthy long natural hair for once in my life, and the joy of my journey!

      Yes. Pressure and/or negative comments from individuals will definitely sour your natural hair journey. Especially if it's people that are close to you and those are the ones you were hoping would understand, but it doesn't necessarily happen that way all the time. Just keep remembering that natural hair is healthy hair, especially if you nurture it like you're supposed to!! Keep doing you boo.

      +claris17gemini I used to work at Hooters. I'm biracial. One of the rules there basically is that black girls have to have have relaxed or heat treated hair to come to work. It sucked. And it wrecked my hair. So, I quit after like five days.

    Girl...I just love your videos! Your tips are GREAT!!!!
    I've been natural for about 7/8 years....and had locs for 5! They were almost waist length, and my daughter the cosmetologist cut about 10 inches (which still left me with almost mid back hair!) and then she took the out! ...took about 2 months!
    I now have armpit (or thereabouts!) length natural hair. So, I'm trying to be kind to it and grow it! I think all your tips are on point and one that you said in another one of your videos and that was to be happy with YOUR hair...and after all these years, I finally getting there! It's crazy curly/nappy/wild/big...and I LOVE IT!!!!
    I find myself letting just have its own way more and more (yes, I have been told the I resemble Huey from Boondocks! lol!)So thanks and keep these wonderful videos coming! XO C~

    First of all you are just beautiful. Now on to the hair comment. You are so right about just letting your hair grow without doing length checks every minute. I was blow drying my hair about every 6 weeks just to check the length because I had a BSL goal (and I really don't like my hair straight BTW). So for now I'll just let it grow, enjoy my curs wait for a year to do my next length check. I want MBL hair in the curly state so I've still got a long way to go.

  • @kedeeky
    @kedeeky 11 років тому

    Your last point was KEY imo. I really believe that when taking the natural route you have to first be confident in knowing that you are beautiful regardless of your hair length. I think hair growth is the same as when they say "a watched pot never boils"...worrying def won't help it grow! lol. I do have to say that I'm guilty of using the smoothing-type brush for when I do my bantus and I really wanna make sure that the twists within them are smooth. I haven't seen much in hair loss.

    Although, I've gone a year without protective styles.. I wear my hair in a banana scarf every single day (I don't wear it out much apart from selfies!) I think.. If you just keep it moist, tangled free, loose and left alone (no playing with it!) it grows fine :)

    I am so happy you said not to focus on getting long hair because I know I obsess about that sometimes; not knowing if my hair will grow past its longest length! I really appreciate your tips especially the short hair tip. I will stop stressing that I have short hair. I think the reason why we stress is because with short hair, our styling techniques are limited. That's why I appreciate watching the videos to learn how I can get twa styles. It helps me to embrace my length when i can style it different ways and keep it moistured and beautiful short. So thanks for teaching us to enjoy our natural hair. Now I love my hair!

    I'm half white, half black and the military. Let me tell you, it is SO hard to grow my hair out because of how tight we have to keep our hair back. It breaks my heart everyday to slip it back and use all these hardening jels to keep it in place. I've been natural about 2 yrs and your videos has help me a lot. My go to styles are twists or twist outs, i co-wash, moisturize and i also learned to detangle shed hair, by
    another tuber named "jostylin". she suggests to gently pull hair at the ends to remove any shed hair, you can do this everyday or every 2-3 days. Hair shed daily and with
    natural hair texture, the shed hair gets caught in the coils of our hair. Good advice from youtuber naturals. :-)

    Thanks for posting. I'd been growing my hair since 2009. I really liked Tip 10 because often times I dont think my hair is growing and I feel like it should be WAY longer than it is, but taking some of your other tips (moisturizing, and you are what you eat), I really need to let the idea of length go, and accept the fact that it is growing, just at its own pace and not my expected pace!

    Hey, I'm a new fan. I've been getting relaxers since I was 10. I'm 20 now and have just decided to start keeping my hair healthy, since these chemicals and continuous damage are really getting tiring to deal with. I was wondering if you knew anything about Wen? It's supposed to be a shampoo/conditioner that keeps your hair healthy and it's also supposed be good for all hair types. But the thing is I haven't seen a lot of black people do review videos. Have you heard of it? I was thinking I might start trying it if enough black people told me it worked on their hair type. lol. Also, have you heard anything about mane and tail? I hear that's good too. I just don't know where to start because I have never had to take care of my natural curls.

    Thanx for the Pep talk!!! I've been so lazy, wearing wigs , holding them down with bobby pins and the damage to my hair is horrible!!! My sides now have alopecia, with sparse patches of hair, but the rest of my hair is long, just below My shoulder blades but thin. I had began to feel so overwhelmed, that I had thought about just razoring the sides, since that is stylish. The only thing about that thought, is that it would not look professional for my job as an RN supervisor, in a Mental health facility. Since I have many oils, I am going to begin using your recipes, since I do see that they work!!! Thanx again!!! You are amazingly awesome!!!!! Peace!! T

    • @PaniniWasteland
      @PaniniWasteland 10 років тому +17

      yes I kept my ends for an entire year before cutting it off. Sometimes people cut it off after 2 years. It can be done but it will be hella hard to comb through because there will be tension where the natural hair meets the relaxed end.

    Love your hair. I use coconut oil with my fingers. It also helps reduce shrinkage. I cut my hair to an inch and have grown it out to past my shoulders. I love how it feels and styling is quicker than when I was relaxed and it holds the shine longer and less breakage. It took a long time to break that boar bristle brush habit.

    i know it can be frustrating. I went natural at 15 as well and i am 19 now and have come a very long way. Even more pressure when your in school and in that "awkward" stage of natural hair. Hang in there. It's worth it. Try getting medium sized braids or Senegalese twists. Make sure to tell them not to do it tight. or even better, try Havana twist and keep them in for 10 weeks. You'll start to get impatient by the first week which will make you appreciate your natural hair even more. GL!

      Yea ppl do it because they are trying to retain length instead of growing it out..they try to cut a lot of the split end off. so they may cut about a half an inch a month depending on how fast the hair grows

      @Quani_McQueen 8 років тому +1

      +Nickee xoxo Well yeah, you won't see length even tho it's still growing but sum ppl dnt want to see length for reasons of trying to get rid of as much split ends as possiple. so every half inch that grows a month that person will cut that off every month

      My hair used to be very thin and would go past my shoulders, but I stopped using shampoos. Started using coconut oil, taking vitamins, eating healthier. I stopped combing my hair. And I trim everytime I need to. Now my hair is past my shoulders. The front of my hair grew back. My ends though are so dry, and I get a lot of split ends. I'm probably going to have to start using a sealant and water.

      +Rachel Holden I'm not saying their not capable I do think people that are i Dian or more of a mixed race mabye Caucasian peoples hair grow longer faster because I'm African Erica my hair dosent have to be washed every day but I apply doctor miracles temple and nape balm all around my scalp and it has grown wonders about an inch since may but without oils and attention it not gonna grow fast

    Ahhh I have a problem with this too lol. The hair at the top of my head at the scalp is like a jungle of tangles lol. What works for me: I make sure to put my leavin cond and alittle oil at the roots. I don't always do that but it does help. This will kept the hair soft. Also you can try braiding the hair at the roots then two strand twist the rest. This will keep your hair from shrinking up at the roots and also from bunching up at night as you sleep. This REALLY helps me!

    @Sierra Hamilton,100% correct. Over-trimming is not productive. Also I would recommend a no-sulfates fast shmapoo to boost hair growth. Test it first though as everyone's hair reacts differently.

    Yes, it's recommended that you wrap it up every night with a satin silk scarf to keep the moisture locked in your hair. They even say avoid using cotton pillows because they take all of the moisture out of your hair. Use a satin silk pillow cover. So when in doubt wrap it but if you choose to use the satin silk pillow case then you don't necessarily have to wrap your hair

  • @umeinui

    I don't recommend it often but if you need a confidence boost, get your hair flat ironed every now and then so you can see that your hair IS growing. My hair has grown a good 2-3 inches since July. I'm not sure if thats really good or not but I saw what I needed to see to convince me to stay away from perm a while longer :)
