Bosch 12V Cordless Brushless Trim Router Review

    Bosch's new GKF12V-25 completely redesigns the cordless trim router. Specifically designed for edge profiling and trimming, this router nails its targeted applications with surprising performance from a 12V tool.
    Also it should go without saying, DO NOT ATTEMPT the drop test as I did, since the drop detection feature does not exist. I did not have a bit, collet, or nut installed, and the spindle was retracted above the shoe with no rotating parts exposed.

    The more I look at this thing, the more I want one. I've got a Milwaukee 2.25hp, Bosch Colt (which has been used 3-4 times in its life) and the incredible Makita LXT trimmer but they are either bulky, corded (or both) or designated to a hard-case kit that I do not separate them from. I would buy this and just keep a 1/4" round-over bit in it and toss it in my always have bag, and maybe toss in a flush trim and small solid carbide up-cut bit.
    After seeing you do those 1/4"(?) grooves it really put how powerful My Makita router is into perspective. I've got a video of it doing a 3/4"w1/2"d cross grain on some Ambrosia Maple in a single pass and it really wasn't struggling. Not knocking the Bosch in any way, as they are two completely different form factors. The design of this is obviously for edge work and the offset handle design and the shaft being in the latter 3rd of the base is really a nice bit of thoughtful engineering.
    And hard to tell for sure from the video, but it looked like the grain was pushed out and up by that knot in relation to the cutter, and even with a sharp bit and a higher RPM it still likely would have resulted in tear out. Only way I've found to reliably avoid that successfully is to inspect all of the edges, mark or take note of all the spots that have a questionable grain direction and cut them first going clockwise. Takes lot more time to do this, but if you have a board that absolutely cannot have a chewed up edge it' is what it is.

    • @DoresoomReviews
      @DoresoomReviews  6 років тому +2

      Excellent points. Yeah, after using it for that 1/4" groove, it really solidified that Bosch designed this to be targeted at edge profiling and trimming, which it's amazing at. That also explains why there's no LED or edge guide attachment spots, since it's meant to be used with a bearing bit which doesn't need either of those.
      The grain around that knot was a big contributing factor for the tearout as you mentioned. Good tip on climb cutting those areas!

    I've looked at this tool on several occasions. I already have a couple of items on the 12v platform, and ten years on they still perform well. I own the Ryobi cordless router. It is the first version, and frankly terrible to use. But, back then it was the only kid on the block.
    The bosch is not an expensive router, but the lack of versatility, and dust extraction would be a deal breaker for me.
    It would be ideally suited to edge trimming and, with the appropriate cutter, hinge
    pockets. Oh, if you are planning on swinging a lot of doors, I'd invest in a few more batteries.
    In the end I opted for the cordless Makita. Variable speed, plenty of accessories, including a plunge base, and a pleasure to use.
    Thanks for sharing.

    I am right handed but would prefer to hold the router in the left hand so,as to NOT block view of the bit.I also would prefer to have the bit position under the end of my hand rather than the butt.For me, the design is ass backwards but I should mention that I have not used this router yet. Can anyone tell me why they sell these tools bare(without battery). I prefer to have two batteries and a case with it. I have their corded trim 1 hp and find it excellent for that purpose. Colluded always use another remoter!

    • @DoresoomReviews
      @DoresoomReviews  4 роки тому +2

      Most tool manufacturers generally sell tools other than drills/drivers as bare tools so you're not forced to buy more batteries you don't need. It's a way to expand on what you already have of a battery system. Their basic drill/driver kit is pretty economical, and may be cheaper than buying individual batteries if you're in the market for a driver and impact: amzn.to/2KCCcR3

      Yes, but it's not very good at it. You have to tilt the fixed base into the work for a plunge cut, since there isn't a plunge cut base available for this router.
      If you plan on using this router for regular plunge cuts, I'd look at something else instead.

    A word from the wise on cordless tools...
    Their speed is meant to be maintained. That's where the saying, "Let the tool do the work." comes from. As soon as you bog them down by pushing too hard, you're creating more battery heat discharge than cut. Speed through material is dictated purely by tone.
    Slow her down and make her sing, even with 18 Volt architecture. Otherwise, it's cheaper in the long run to grab an extension cord if you have a tendency to "power assist" your cuts.

      It would also be climb cutting - moving with the direction of bit rotation instead of against it. Much easier to lose control that way, and therefore should be done sparingly. Like near corners and around obvious grain features that are more likely to tear out. Unfortunately the grain on that entire length was prone to it, but I didn't want to make a climb cut that long. Plus the UA-cam safety police would have an aneurysm if I had done so. 😂

    $250 bare tool... The larger 18V is $170 bare tool. It would be nice to have a small trim router like this but I've watched many reviews, it just sounds too crunchy; maybe it's cheap gears inside!

    • @DoresoomReviews

      I haven't seen it listed for more than $150 bare tool anywhere, at least in the US. Amazon has it for $20 off right now too: amzn.to/2HWmdOM
      Bosch doesn't have an 18V cordless router yet, unless you've seen a press release for one very recently. And this router feels plenty sturdy, not cheap at all. I believe it's direct drive, so no gears.
