Makita,IMO ,is one of those tool Co's that I feel you can pretty much feel safe in purchasing any tool and feel confident you have a reliable , well built tool that will hold up over time . Nice addition!
You won't regret buying this router. It is a real powerhouse, I'm almost certain it has more power than my Bosch Colt but I don't have a small enough dynamometer to say for certain. I can say for certain that I was able to make a 3/4" wide 1/2" deep dado with a 3/8" straight cut bit in 1 pass (half the width in half the width out) with no perceivable drop in RPM or apparent strain on the motor. It did use 2 bars off a 3ah battery cutting 4 of said dados which were ~15" long so having more batteries and/or 5ah are a must for any kind of production work. With my dust extractor hooked up it also caught (estimated) 90% of the dust. Three tools I bought this year which I think benefit the most from being cordless are this router, Makitas LXT planer, and the 18v x2 track saw. Really an exponentially better experience not to mention the time they save. None of these 3 tools give up anything to their cordless counterparts aside from a negligible weight difference which, IMHO, is completely offset by not dragging a cord across whatever you are working on.
Not a day passes with out using mine at the moment iam fitting door fire strips and the time it saves me is unbelievable infact the trimmer payed for itself in two days amazing. 👍
I've had it since the holidays. The tracksaw sliding base will fit Festool track, too. I've used the base with track and like it pretty well, just make sure to put the "foot" down to keep it level. On the router, I've had problems with the plunge lever not staying down unless I crank it down really hard holding the router with one hand and cranking the lever with the other: My main complaint. Second complaint: dust collection on the router base doesn't work very well, I'm comparing it to my corded Dewalt DW611 router base. The rest of it is great. I just routed some circles, and it was great not to have to fight the twisting cord tangling up with the hose while doing that. The hose was much better behaved. It's a light router, so a heavy hose can drag it down. I love the LED light, love the two wrenches (hate those damnable shaft lock buttons where you really need three hands instead of two hands and two wrenches). Ordering the dust shroud, wanted to let you know that at the 2:00 time mark, you will notice that the black turn screw, was vibrating itself open, a drop or two of loctite should keep that screw in place and not fall out. Now I know why that screw is extra long, lol. Again thank you for sharing...
I'm not sure if it was mentioned in the video, but this router accepts 3/8" shank router bits along with the usual 1/4" shank. It comes with two collet adapters. It is a very nice tool. The only thing I don't like is the lack of fine adjustment for depth of cut. The DeWalt and Milwaukee versions both have very good depth micro adjust. I never really use dust collection on my cordless trim router. The vacuum hose sort of defeats the convenience of cordless for me. I hope Makita comes out with an improved version of the fixed base for this router
I bought both to compare...corded and cordless. First impression today, the corded feels more solid and better in the hand. Its also much louder and I found the lack of an led to be a bummer. The cordless gets pretty top heavy with a battery which could be a factor for long days in a shop. Corded came with really great plunge base and sits around $130. Cordless is same price minus $75 plunge base. I do have the cordless tracksaw so it seemed like an easy choice but after using Im not sure. If the corded had an led task light it would be a no brainer. I will add, I grew up on Dewalt and am heavily invested but recently wanted to change it up. My Dewalt tools arent refined but they will take an absolute beating...I do not feel the same way about Makita so far. The dual battery charger is a PITA. But hey, what do I know? Which would you keep?
Great review on a great router. To connect the router's clear plastic dust extraction connector to a vacuum cleaner hose, what coupling are you using? I have a the same router and a Makita vacuum cleaner/ dust extractor and I am trying to identify the correct coupling?
Great job on the review but I feel the need to leave my 2 cents on one aspect. I suppose it doesn't technically have a micro adjust but as far as I'm concerned it does. You can easily dial this router into any depth you need by simply turning it upside down to adjust it or holding it in your hand. You can adjust it in increments of .5mm easily, and fractions of an inch just the same. Those in doubt just go to a HD and try for yourself. You can also close the clamp about half way and then it will let you micro adjust without sliding down on you. There is a video on here where someone shows that method, which isn't perfect but it works. I considered the new Bosch GKF125CEK but it lacks the ability to use 2 wrenches to tighten the collet, plus the collet is rather small and the fine adjustment isn't nearly as smooth as the Makita. Anyway, the Makita LXT is the easiest to adjust imho, and it's just an all around awesome router. The Bosch is a nice router too, and as a fan of many Bosch tools I don't mean to bash their Colt, just not a fan of one wrench push button collet types. They got it right on the 1617 and MRP23EVS at least.
Agreed on the ability to finely adjust this router. Just partially engage the latch until there’s some friction to keep the router from slipping freely and you can quickly and easily adjust the depth to fractions of a millimeter. A pretty simple solution with far fewer little moving parts that can get damaged over time.

Love my Ridgid. This unit is most definitely a superior tool with the accessories. If I could afford almost 500 on a compact router for the accessories pack I do it. But I don't have that much skratch. Battery life?
Don Boyer we didn't test battery life. Our reasoning is folks don't just have one battery and it kinda becomes a mute point. But that is just Andy's two cents. Love to hear your feedback
How's that ridgid going? I'm in that system but tossing up spreading out to get this makita and either a battery adapter or go balls deep and get a makita battery and charger as well
Ive got the other cordless Makita. It looks the same. That being said I am highly dissapointed. You mentioned round over bits but I did not hear you mention that there is a limit to the size of the round over bits that can be used. the Makita hole in the base is quite small and there is a definite limit to the diameter of the bit that can be used. Im pretty sure they made a limit just to make you buy the push base for extra money. Looks like that is the only way to use my round over bit or break out my Bosch which does have. a larger diameter hole for the bit to cut. I like the Makita but if I didn't have plans for it in my future cnc machine I hadn't bought yet I would be returning it right now for the dewault. No one has ever mentioned that on any review. The hole in the base is simply too small and it will not allow you access to ALL 1/4 bits. You have to buy the base station thingy.
Does anyone have an issue with the guide bushing it comes with not being centre to the bit or collet and know how to fix it? It goes off centre when i clip the lever down it looks like
David Sanders Good point. There are people who want to ditch the cord and oly deal with a hose. For most contactors, the corded route would be where they go.
I went from Milwaukee about 5 years ago and havent looked back (for cordless tools). That said, I love my corded Bosch SDS hammer drill and corded jigsaw and love my 2 new pneumatic guns I just got from dewalt a couple months ago
I used it for two minutes, YES TWO MINUTES and it stopped working. The LED lights come on but the damn thing doesn't turn, and the unit heats up. Yes all the batteries I used are Genuine Makita 5Amp fully charged, tried many batteries same BS, My problem, I bought from Amazon Germany and I live in Greece. What a rip off.
Are you sponsored by Makita or you just forgot to mention some really big flaws? Plunge base is overall really bad. Extreme free play and bad feeling plunge mechanism, no bushings or slide bearings, It's metal against metal and not machined to very tight tolerances resulting in the most unsmooth plunge action I've ever experienced. Spring presses directly on the thin plastic sole, resulting in an (over time) warped sole. Mine had >1mm convex shape out of the box and I had to make my own sole in thicker plastic to withstand the spring force. For us who live in Europe there is a 8mm collet available. It's really low budget (single slit collet) and several people have had problems with bits coming loose during use. It's an OK fixed base trim router for 1/4" or 6mm bits. Rest in the box (including side fence) is pure shit.
Agree. It's shame for Makita for giving us a "demo" trimmer. Where did you get the 8mm collet? Mine came with only 1/4" and 3/8" and I couldn't find any of 8mm collets that fits. Usuaully I prefer Makita but now I'm gonna think twice before ordering from them.
@@omri3753 My 8mm collet was included in the purchase. Europe standard collets are 6 and 8mm so that's what we get. You should be able to find the 8mm somewhere on the internet....

Pretty mediocre review. Sounded like a Makita salesman at the begining and you weren’t critical at all. It was useful for me though. Not your reviews but some of the comments. Convinced me not to buy it. I’m sure it you did any edge routing that dust collection port would pick up much of the dust.
The new Bosch Colt 7.0 amp has micro adjust and it works great. I am leaning toward the Makita though due to two wrench option and the LEDs have a button to turn them off, unlike the Bosch which stays on when plugged in. I also am going to test out a micro adjust method in the store next time. I saw a video for the LXT router where the guy closed the latch about half way and used the adjuster like a micro adjustment since the base would not slide freely while partially locked.

for microadjustment just close the lock halfway it makes it harder to turn giving you more control for adjustments
good video. size of collet is 6.3mm (1/4"). CAN YOU USE 6mm BIT? IT DOESN'T FALL OUT?

i wish it had the AWS feature...i hope makita makes a cordless remote for their AWS VACCUUM so we can use non aws tools with the aws vac.

you mentioned nothing about does it take a 30mm bush or 16mm bush what about if your doing template work or is it just for trimming ?
I don't understand why they made the opening on the fixed base so tiny. I can't fit several of the round over bits I like to use at all.

Well I have a cordless shop vac that I hook up. Besides I I'm happy to not have to points of pull on the router, a wire and a vac pipe.
