Valve in my eyes is the only triple A game studio that has made none true bad games (except artifact) but they quickly cleaned up their act with Half Life Alyx.
We took the 7th generation consoles for granted....holy fuck triple A games just aren't the same anymore in my opinion. Most of them are just monetized for years to come, rarely true passion is put in.
i once trapped a dude in the corner as a jockey next to the safe house. the others made it in but the horde was at the door. a zombie stopped the others from hitting the dude. eventualy they opened the door and died
L4D 2 is immortal. God tier. Its environment is legit scary with all the voices of zombies. The dialogues also are so realistic and we actually feel that we are surviving a zombie outbreak.
I remember when I first started playing Left 4 Dead 2 when I first encountered the tank I was terrified hearing the music seeing the shaking on the screen & then having a piece of concrete being chucked at me with a vicious roar yeah those were good times❤

Moved out of my parents house and had a hard time being able to talk to my younger sisters but one day i bought l4d2 for them on steam for like 2 bucks and played through the entire game in like 2 weeks. We had a absolute blast!
Left 4 Dead 2, a 2009 game that still has more than 10k daily active players. It ultimately proves its worth on a competitive environment where any AAA game will age quicker than a cheetah.
This maybe true today but what happens as the old guard retires and dies off , I fear valve may never put out something like l4d ever again. I hope I'm wrong but I don't have high hopes.
i remember being absolutely terrified anytime i was alone as survivors, entire team dead, 25 health, and it being way too quiet, suspiciously quiet, nothing scares you in that game quite as much as that
Expert, you and a teammate, low health, and no ammo/supplies, it's realism difficulty so your team doesn't respawn and you can't see your teammate, and it's dead silent.
Imma rant list some things I loved while playing the game, that really showed me how much the developers cared as they made the game (keep in mind each point will probably be long): - An aspect of the gameplay that also makes it stand out from other games is the resource management. Especially in the advanced and expert difficulties, it can be extremely hard not to use all your healing items at the start, leaving you waiting for more. When you inevitably run out of heals, it gets extremely tense as you pray to the Director to spawn in less zombies and more medkits. You can’t revive forever without medkits, so you want to save them. But on the other hand, you may need to top up your health in case special zombies screw things over. The great thing is this game perfectly forces the player to ask themselves this dilemma for the sake of survival. - The insane amount of dialogue added into the game, often used in specific scenarios. For example they used completely new lines of dialogue for picking up items within the tunnel of love, a small area in the Dark Carnival campaign. (“Pipe bomb of love” etc). Completely random and very specific thing to add, yet surprising. Also, never got bored of the story dialogue when doing expert attempts. There would be sometimes up to 8 different lines that could be potentially spoken at any point, and often they’d give lines to different characters. For instance, after Ellis comes up with the idea of using the stock car in the mall to escape in the first campaign, a random person is chosen to react to the plan, and they react in different ways. - The fact that they made a fictional band and composed multiple songs for them to be played throughout some of the campaigns. I thought it was something very creative to add. The finale of the Dark Carnival, the Midnight Rider concert is always extremely fun to play. - Another thing I noticed when completing the mall in the first campaign was the fact that there are two paths made before starting the alarm on the third floor. One is always picked for you, the other is blocked. I noticed this because one path starts with you breaking the windows on the second floor, and the other floor was harder starting with you opening the door to the first floor area. - The game was extremely ahead of it’s time with teaching the players it’s mechanics. It shows the player small key points of information as you are slowly introduced to the mechanics. Small notes on the screen like “don’t disturb the witch” is infinitely better than spamming the player with information or taking away the control of the player. - Replayability. Besides the randomised spawn mechanics, this game has so much to do for each of the survival campaigns. Personally I loved the mutations, which often completely changes mechanics. Things such as last man alive, which forces you to play solo against special infected (common zombies removed), and gib fest, which gives you a L60 light machine gun with unlimited ammo. I also got around to playing a mutation that forces you to carry a gnome throughout the whole campaign that forces you to not use your gun and attracts zombies. It’s rare nowadays for games to add cheat codes to the end of games, but this is a step further. - Mad respect for the development team to work with the community last year to produce a new major update “The Last Stand”. It shows how even after a decade from release, the developers still care for the game enough to add new melee weapons, a new campaign and bonus achievements. I was fully expecting TF2 to get the continuing updates, while L4D2 would slowly loose it’s developers. Yet somehow it is the other way around. In conclusion, from the campaigns to any other aspect of the game, this is an absolute masterpiece and is one of the best games I ever played (a decade old game!).
Left 4 Dead has cursed me from childhood by having amazing feeling guns with simplistic feedback that made me believe I had good aim, but now I can no longer adapt to recoil lmao
I did not see that coming but I should have since they have a very similar way of analysing games not to mention their shared sense of humor. Of course these two are friends.
Nothing like one of my favorite UA-camrs endlessly praising one of my favorite video games of all time. Act Man you killed it and I never fully realized how the encouragement of teamwork is what makes this game my favorite. You also got every meme and reference under the sun and I can safely say you're as much a hardcore fan as I am. Killin it dude ✌️
I'll never forget a l4d2 Dark Carnival game where I was downed just as the chopper arrived. Our Rochelle came to save me but I was yelling in the mic "forget me! Go! Go! Go!" But she saved me. I made it to the chopper so fast I didn't check for my team. I was the only survivor.
one time on that same map I told my friend to leave me and grab the gnome (we were doing THAT acheivment) he managed to revive me while inside of the chopper AND grab the gnome. It was awesome.
still to this day, hearing the sound of a hunter growling gives me chills, especially when my whole team has died and im making a dash to the safe room
Director: Mmmmm the survivors, are struggling and are about to die and we don’t even know where Rochelle is? So should I place a horde? Spawn a special infected? Spawn a witch? Place in an upcoming tank? Nah that’s too harsh, I won’t summon the witch But I will do the other stuff!
Men i remember play Dark carnival en Expert, i come to the safe room, all my teammates dead, i was so happy but in that instead i see a witch in the saferoom, it's a little saferoom so was "die or die buddy"
That was literally my favorite part of L4D. It felt like someone was telling the infected what to do sometimes. If someone was doing good, the infected chose to target them instead of the players who weren't killing as many zombies. Or if everyone was getting wrecked, the special infected would use their claws instead of their special attack.
I love the drum sting that plays directly after you kill a witch, it defuses all of the tension as if the survivors let out a sigh of relief and and their heartbeat returned to normal
The fact that both the survivors and the infected both have to play tactical to me is amazing for a game from 2009. Most games can’t get that right today.
arguably playing special infected in versus takes more skill but most of it is just weird bugs/tricks so it doesn't really make that much of a difference.
@@andresemidey9679 so is trying to coordinate your teamates as special infected, I’m guessing you would say “the same goes for survivors” which I would agree BUT because of how playing special infected is designed, you get punished even more if you get bad teammates/ non coordinating people
Left 4 dead is one of those games where I’ll always have fond memories of. Amazing game, I hope everyone had a chance to play this game, because it is awesome.
I remember playing Left 4 Dead 1 and not knowing how the hell you get through the apartments on No Mercy Chapter 1, you actually used to be able to make that jump onto the air conditioning from the ceiling, took a bunch of health away but you could do it.
@@Marinealver I can see Joe as Vegeta saying "I've been to your channel, Act Man. I know all about your viewers, your 1 million subs. You allowed me to believe i could beat you." I can't believe it's taken me all these years to realise that the zombies came for the survivors in the cutscene because Bill smeared Francis with boomer bile.
@@knightgallade8431 There's actually two hordes in the L4D1 cutscene. The one you mentioned is the second big one where a tank spawns. The other smaller horde shows up out of nowhere while Bill & Zoey were investigating crying noises.
Imo they just went over board with mechanics trying really hard to make a new experience. Like act man said you don’t need tons of mechanics for a great game or replay value. That being said I still enjoy and play both games today.
@@TheRisible They failed to nail the basic features first though, that's the damning thing. The visuals, the physics, the attention to detail... L4D may be a simpler game, mechanically, but it's far more sophisticated overall.
I love how such a simple game can have infinite replayability without getting boring I don't play a lot cause I have other games, but I always come back to it for a fun time once in a while but it doesn't feel the same as it did back in ~2010 with the boys :(
Yeah this game is so fun to play it almost never gets old I love it but remember first playing it in 2010 on pc with one of my old laptop’s great memories
For me one of the great attractions was the seemingly endless dialogue you'd hear depending on the circumstances of the play-through. After 2 years of solid play I hurled a molotov at a witch playing as coach and started running, drawing the witch into the trap we had set and coach blurts out "outta my way - I've got a burning witch on my ass" like right on cue. Simply amazing. I'd never heard it before and this was after literally hundreds of hours of play. Laff'ed my fat coach ass right off.
The full game is pretty decent, but yeah missing some key L4D features *cough cough* arbitrary bullshit penalty to hipfire unless you have certain cards
@@haerfgvbag7050 Back 4 Blood is an improvement on virtually every aspect of the original L4D games, and that's no shot at Left 4 Dead 1 and 2, cause they were both phenomenal. But I would also agree that B4B has its issues. I for one, don't like the fact that there's hardly any dialogue or talking between characters outside of calling things out or pinging something. Quite boring when one of the coolest most likable things about the Left 4 Dead characters was the wacky, random conversations they'd have about some play they went to as a kid or a certain life experience or something.. needed more character dialogue in B4B for sure.
@@WolfQuartz Asymmetrical in terms of abilities and weapons: one team is normal people with guns and melee, grenades, and healing items, and the other is a bunch of zombies, with super strength, health, acid puke, explosives for stomachs, etc. It's really hard to balance all that stuff out to make the mode enjoyable, hence why the og commenter is impressed.
It's not even the theme that is satisfying in the finale. It's when the tune kicks in and you know you have to get out of there making a dash for it through the horde with survivors panicking and telling you it's time to go and you see the transport leaving the scene with the infected chasing you before the theme plays. It's just awesome
The music in this game is SO GOOD to the point Valve created the whole band of the midnight riders just for the game, wrote 4 songs for them, and made a freakin midnight riders website
I wish I was good enough with editing and had the time and would make like a mini video for gratitude and that would certainly be the title. Maybe use some of his videos to make like a greatest hits reel 🤣 a guy can dream.
L4D2 and Deep Rock Galactic remain the greatest coop shooters ever made. Nothing else comes close to their intuitive teamwork, excellent balance and endless replayability.
@@weaponizedautism3269 ...No. It had some nice ideas, but its pacing was relentless compared to the measured and varied pacing of both DRG and L4D, its class balance has been all over the place historically, its progression system is grindy and full of redundancy, and it has neither mod/custom level support - to my knowledge - nor procedurally generated content. As for teamwork, what I experienced was far less inherent teamwork and incentivization than in DRG or L4D.
And there are many custom mods and workshop shit for it too. And there is a good balance between characters too although it does kind of fell short and i agree with progression system . It's Grindy and a bit boring

I played games as a kid (spyro, Mario, Pokémon, etc) but stopped gaming once I hit middle school. L4d and l4d2 is what got me into gaming as a adult. I played constantly and still keep up with the friends I met on there. We even all traveled to meet up, it was so fun.
Valve was so fucking good at *simple yet genius* game-design whether it's Counter-Strike or Left 4 Dead or their other games they would design a really simple gameplay and level design that has insane skill ceiling and insane replay value that you could play for years and it would still be fun but no matter how much you improved there was still room to improve more and every single little detail in the gameplay added to all that, nothing was useless and on top of that all of these components worked so fucking well together
I gifted it to my bud who’s never played it or heard about it, we played with two other homies for 4 hours straight and he loved it, and now it’s a consistent game we go to. Valve really do be making legendary games
Arguably the best coop experience you will find in a video game (4 players coop with friends is something beyond amazing, seriously, you can only understand after you play it)
I had an encounter with the director early in my experience of L4D2. I was in the tunnel of love and kept hearing this weird noise coming from above me. Searching around I found a hole in the roof, but it was too dark to see anything inside. As I was staring into this hole trying to figure out what was making those strange noises a smoker tongue sudden grabbed me from the darkness and in a panic I emptied half a dozen sniper rounds into the hole, killing the smoker. That was so funny and has so far been my favorite moment in L4D2, but since then I haven't encountered a smoker in that part of the level again.
its a litle bit like Dead space, yes some encounters are intentional but most of the time its completely random i gone through levels were nothing appeared and it was so damn scary and id replay and there would be that 1 enemy that appears in the most unexpected place, L4D2 does it better though its awesome like that alot of the time when replaying you would expect certain specials to appear and even hordes and other times they just dont show up and it gives a ominous feel knowing you have no idea where nothing is and you will never know.
One of my favorite moments was during the second level of Dark Carnival. I was entering this warehouse sort-of area and suddenly a horde comes out of nowhere. While I'm fighting this horde, I just hear a hunter scream over and over again. So I'm like "why is this hunter screaming? I can't see it, and no one's getting pounced on, so what's happening?" but ultimately I ignore it to kill the last of the horde. After I kill them all, I look to my left, where there's a wall and a shelf. A hunter had spawned INTO the shelf and was trying to pounce on me the entire time while I was none the wiser. I then shot it until it was dead, but in hindsight I should've filmed it
literally just a few days ago on no mercy had the director spawn a tank instantly. like the second we left the safe room it spawned and came in from the top of the building somewhere absolutely fucked but kinda funny
I still to this day tell people my favorite multiplayer game is Left 4 Dead 2, no game has to me captured the fun and scares I had playing with my friends on a Friday night after school.
My college friends and I bought this on sale, let's just say we found out who's the biggest screamer in our group. We're still playing thanks to the custom maps and there's never a dull moment (damn alarm cars and accidentally shooting/ fail crowning witches)
I remember my mom and my sister Sarah played l4d1 on our old xbox 360. In the 4th chapter of no mercy. Bill said to francis while healing himself in the elevator, "Stop staring at my ass!". I've only heard that line once. That was i think over 9 years ago. How many of y'all heard Bill say this line?

I grew up on a mix of L4D2, COD BO2, COD WOW, and BF III. And my experience with L4D2 was unforgettable! I’m sorry but playing split screen with my brother on the XBOX and going through a whole campaign was something you NEVER forget.
I got a moment where i walked down a corridor in l4d1 and my team was little bit ahead of me and they were fighting a horde. So i started to walk to them, but two tanks just spawned behind me and i screamed RUN! RUUUUUN! I remember seeing my teammates flying by my head while im getting slapped by the zombies! We died, but we had so much fun. This is why i love left 4 dead so much.

Expert, you and a teammate, low health, and no ammo/supplies, it's realism difficulty so your team doesn't respawn and you can't see your teammate, and it's dead silent.
Imma rant list some things I loved while playing the game, that really showed me how much the developers cared as they made the game (keep in mind each point will probably be long):
- An aspect of the gameplay that also makes it stand out from other games is the resource management.

L4D2 and Deep Rock Galactic remain the greatest coop shooters ever made. Nothing else comes close to their intuitive teamwork, excellent balance and endless replayability.
Vermintide 2?
@@weaponizedautism3269 ...No. It had some nice ideas, but its pacing was relentless compared to the measured and varied pacing of both DRG and L4D, its class balance has been all over the place historically, its progression system is grindy and full of redundancy, and it has neither mod/custom level support - to my knowledge - nor procedurally generated content.
As for teamwork, what I experienced was far less inherent teamwork and incentivization than in DRG or L4D.
Vermentide 2 requires more teamwork on cata then drg and l4d2
And there are many custom mods and workshop shit for it too. And there is a good balance between characters too although it does kind of fell short and i agree with progression system . It's Grindy and a bit boring
Sitting here a year later, I am torn as to whether or not Helldivers 2 deserves to be up there as well.
I'm British and I never EVER knew that there was a different official cover art for the UK version of L4D2 🤯

I played games as a kid (spyro, Mario, Pokémon, etc) but stopped gaming once I hit middle school. L4d and l4d2 is what got me into gaming as a adult. I played constantly and still keep up with the friends I met on there. We even all traveled to meet up, it was so fun.
Valve was so fucking good at *simple yet genius* game-design
whether it's Counter-Strike or Left 4 Dead or their other games
they would design a really simple gameplay and level design that has insane skill ceiling and insane replay value that you could play for years and it would still be fun but no matter how much you improved there was still room to improve more
and every single little detail in the gameplay added to all that, nothing was useless and on top of that all of these components worked so fucking well together
It's what helped Valve carve out Masterpiece after Masterpiece.
Valve is Like Tecmo Koei simple and masterful game design, but lack of strong sequels.

Damm, thats sounds like a scene of a horror movie, the director of l4d2 really lives up to its name
its a litle bit like Dead space, yes some encounters are intentional but most of the time its completely random i gone through levels were nothing appeared and it was so damn scary and id replay and there would be that 1 enemy that appears in the most unexpected place, L4D2 does it better though its awesome like that alot of the time when replaying you would expect certain specials to appear and even hordes and other times they just dont show up and it gives a ominous feel knowing you have no idea where nothing is and you will never know.
I then shot it until it was dead, but in hindsight I should've filmed it
The director is the only thing on the game that scares me the most, this shit spawned 2 tanks at the same time at me
literally just a few days ago on no mercy had the director spawn a tank instantly. like the second we left the safe room it spawned and came in from the top of the building somewhere
absolutely fucked but kinda funny
I still to this day tell people my favorite multiplayer game is
Left 4 Dead 2, no game has to me captured the fun and scares I had playing with my friends on a Friday night after school.
My college friends and I bought this on sale, let's just say we found out who's the biggest screamer in our group. We're still playing thanks to the custom maps and there's never a dull moment (damn alarm cars and accidentally shooting/ fail crowning witches)
its $1,63 now 😂
