In today's video I go Stealth Van Camping at on of the UK's many service stations across the country. Fleet services is one of the bigger ones located on the M3 in the south of England. Today's video I have a van life and stealth camping nightmare and disaster as things start to go wrong.

Think more basic off grid for emergencies. Trangia stove and methylated spirit. Wind up torch/radio. Hot water bottle. Extra blankets, woolly hat and fingerless gloves. Thermal pjs. In a high tech van setup there will be catastrophic system failures at times. A little phone power pack will let you keep a phone charged and you can watch UA-cam.

Get a voltage reader for your leisure batteries. That induction cooker probably draws a lot of power. I had an electric egg cooker and had to start the engine to keep the power up when it was only on for about 5 minutes

You should definitely get a "Mr Buddy" heater for situations like this. If you get the "Mr Buddy flex" it has a cook top as well.

And to make things worse, if you didn’t pay for parking in fleet services, you will automatically be sent a £95 parking fine for staying over 2 hours 😳 a little trick for next time in any motorway service station, go inside where you pay, usually WH Smith and say you have broken down and awaiting recovery and it’s likely you will pass the 2 hours mark, they will then delete your registration plate off their system
I want to say that the meal was worth the effort (looked really delicious!!), but I think a warm cosy bed/van to sleep in might have been the preferred choice that night! 😂 Thanks Will, for sleeping in the freezing cold and giving us a good chuckle! 🤣
I’m glad it’s not just me that this happens to 😂 I was in the middle of snowdonia last winter with no gas or electricity. I highly recommend keeping a camping stove in your van. The msr pocket rocket stove and a small gas canister saved my life

We always keep a small gas bottle and have a camping stove to cook out side so definitely handy

Hi mate,i had a similar trip on Sky in winter,so bought myself a wee £10 stainless steel portable gas cooker from home bargains and a few cans of Butane/Propane gas cans for around £6 go outdoors.Foolproof and never missed a beat in below-freezing temps. They are made for low temp cooking. well worth the money.
You did a really nice job building your van. I still remember the adventures in the car from not to long ago.
Little tip: always shut the gas off at the bottle after using. No matter how expensive the travel stoves are.

Hey I live by these services! They actually burned down a few years ago and had to be rebuilt from scratch, which is why they are so modern and nice inside :)

Yes! LP gas can get too cold to flow. To check your gas tanks amount, pour a little water on the outside. A frost line will form at the level of gas in the tank. Also get an insulated blanket for it. Maybe get a new hose for the gas tank as sometimes they get dirty and will not allow it to flow. Dog food is very nutritious for dogs. Another exciting van life adventure. Crack on Will and have a wonderful day.
No, the butane can, the propane can't. LPG is a mix of butane and propane.

Will, a tip i was told about cutting up an onion is NOT to cut the sprouty (root) bit at the bottom while chopping up the onion as this releases all the gases/odours that causes tears.

I've been looking into buying a diesel heater for my honda Odyssey minivan.
I've seen alot of great things about them.
Do you recommend any particular brands or types?
The ones I was looking at have "all in one" models or ones where the fuel tank is separate from the heater unit.
Any tips you can give are greatly appreciated.
For now I'm not doing a full conversion as it's also my daily driver.
I live in it a few days of the week to save from having to commute so I need it comfy but also able to make it passenger friendly if need be.

Will - I know hindsight is a great thing, BUT I would suggest you keep a small notebook (doesn't rely on battery 😂) in your van to jot down any eureka moments, thoughts and ideas plus MOST IMPORTANTLY any lessons learnt from nights like this.
In winter always plan for the worst with backups for:
- Light (head torch)
- Food (few instant meals) & Drink (flask hot water)
- Cooker (JetBoil or Pocket Rocket camping stove NOT electric)
- Power (where is your Jackery Explorer 1000) ?!!!
- Bedding (winter sleeping bag & thermal underwear)
etc etc...
We all mess up stealth camping, BUT the important thing is to learn from it and plan better next time... ATB 👍

Did you forget your Ecoflow Delta 2. Might have helped you out. I have a Bulin T4 camping stove for emergencies. The gas canisters work down to -5°. A electric blanket will work well with the Ecoflow👍🏻

Turns out it wasn't very pressurised after all!
Hardcore is taking it outside and peeing over it to raise the termperature enough for the gas to gasify and ignite.

I hate to say I got a good chuckle out of this video. You are so funny you can't help but laugh. Just a suggestion. I recommend you check levels and batteries before you embark on a trip and when you are getting diesel. Those DNA kits are very interesting. I found out a lot about my ancestry. If you go to Scotland again and you want to do a motorway service station sleepover stop off at cairn services on the m74. It's a family owned and run services, they're very friendly there, there are signs saying you have to pay if you're there for over a couple of hours but there aren't any cameras and nobody will harass you. I regularly pull off there on my way to the trossachs and sleep in my car for a few hours and there's never been any hassle, and as a bonus they've got great toilets with showers.
will, bad lad, never ever bring your gas tank into an unvented area, ever. If you make an insulated box for the gas tank where you normally store it with the vent drop out that should keep it warm. When you get a chance with your diesel heater run it on full for a couple of hours to decoke it, they don't like sudden switch-offs. Have a spare power pack and a spare gas canister cooker. If you look at the small portable gas cooker when it's cold hold a flame on the tube that goes over the burner head before lighting it, you will be guaranteed that it lights the first time. On your gas hob look for a tube that goes over the burner if it does, do the same lighting trick on that. This is where the cold gas runs and if it is hot it helps it light quicker. Another trick when cooking, is don't cook high-density food, Pick items with a lot of fat in it, food that's small and thin and takes less time. Precooked food works best, walls microwave sausages, sliced in half, cooked ham, cooked chicken breast, and tinned soups are good to mix in with the pasta and bung some mushrooms in ( really easy to cook). if you don't have much gas, porridge will get you through the night. Those horrible precooked burgers and ribs are quickly done on a low gas setting.

We keep a tiny trekking camping stove and gas cartridge in our van for emergencies and summer outdoor cooking… maybe worth you doing! Great vid

sorry about all the mishaps, a great video though. Good drone footage. Fleet services is only 15 minutes or so from me, in our youth we used to go there late at night for coffee after a night out, you could nip in through back access road south bound or just a gateway at the back of the north bound side.. The main services south bound is pretty new after a huge fire a few years ago destroyed the original building
What’s up Will, usually Butane struggles in cold temperatures, Propane is recommended for these situations, I know because I live in a country where a lot of houses still use Gas bottles to heat up water for the shower, and usually if the bottle is outside, Propane, if it’s inside Butane (In your case being in a metal shell, butane will also struggle

Maybe keep a small portable gas stove with you and a Gas heater or electric heater or your electric blanket (Galaxy Days..) that can run off a separate battery source.

As many people have said, camera clocks you in and out. I have car camped on motorway service areas. When I pay in the shop £13 - £15 for 24 hours, I give my reg number, and they show me a picture of my car on the screen to confirm. You will get a fine in the post.
Note to self check battery level , buy a spare gas bottle.

A few years ago I was working away in my van, woke up one morning it was -2c inside my van, I had no heater or anything…that was a very bad start to the day 😂

An idea for a bit more stealth camping is to get a curtain you can hang between the driver compartment and the back of the van. That makes it possible to be in the van with the light on and not have white front windows. An additional advantage is that keeps the living compartment warmer with less diesel usage. A huge percentage of the heat leakage will be through the front windows.

My LPG tank in underslung mate, I’ve been out in -10 and it works absolutely fine so the cold wouldn’t be the issue.
It doesn’t for me. My lpg tank under slung too - no gas to ignite ☹️

Hey will thanks for the vid. just a tip when dicing onions leave the roots on the ends and chop from the middle take the roots off last and it should stop the onions bleeding and save your eyes. yes it can get too cold that gas won’t ignite usually the isobutane gas so if you have butane maybe that’s why. Sometimes ice can build up in the regulator & the cold also draws the power out of batteries too.

The secret with sausages, always buy the finest ones, never the standard ones. It's a good test for your van electrical and gas system being in frozen temperatures, the system may need winterising, good topic for another video.

Sometimes tanks get over filled and they don't work well. I get it with the butane for the heaters at work. Just needs half an hour or so on low to sort
