Nestled in the eastern Alps, some 60% of Austria's countryside is mountainous and almost 90% of farms are found along its slopes. This leads to natural and specific constraints for farmers. The latest Common Agricultural Policy has provisions for people trying to exploit such difficult terrain. FRANCE 24 looks at how effective those funds are in keeping the hills alive with the sound of farmers.

it is nice diverse and supper clear report about Austria small farms, a typical european farm all over europe, apple fields are common in italy and grapes fields are more in germany and france, cows' milk and meat are in swiss and france. a question to austrian minster may be how small farms and big farms complement each other in austria to cover domestic need and support international market?

Big farm are not that common in Austria. Yes, usually the farms are bigger than the first one shown to us, but not many farmers can live solely from their "farm-income".
      Many Austrians think very
protectionist. That's why usually cheaper milk from the netherlands or Northern-Germany doesn't have a chance against the more expensive "native" products.
By bying brands that are completely produced in Austria, Austrians support their farmers directly.
Also, state-owned canteens in schools, universities and municipal buildings are advised, to only buy and use Austrian products, if possible. (And not too expensive).
There is a saying, a rhyme, that almost every Austrian knows from school: "Fahr nicht fort, kauf im Ort!" --> "
Do not go any further, buy locally".
