I changed these Vanos valves on two cars without removing the valve cover. You can get there with your hand and remove them. It's difficult, but faster and than taking apart half the engine.
As our motors get more miles on them, the VANOS system is becoming more if an issue. Any chance you would consider doing a DIY on replacing the central VANOS valves? I am seeing more posts on the bucking issues with these parts and the only videos are on the VANOS actuators located on the outside of the valve cover but no one has done one on the central valve. Just a thought while you have the valve cover off your car.
Hi , I did rebuild the vano on my E39 523i.... while the vano unit was removed I used a spanner and turned the crank a few turns...to many maybe 🤔, and the right spindle gear came out🥺, I have managed to put it back .... should I be worried before refitting the vano unit? Thank you

How would i know if its the actuator (what i see most people replacing) or the valve itself? (ive also seen people cleaning the small "filter" it has, in some cases that filter was actually ripped out)
I’m having vanos related issues on gen2 b58 but I’m not receiving a code the exhaust side degree angle bounces compared to its tagets on datalogs way more than intake side I’ve noticed that degree timing stays very high I am constantly over 100 degree angle with no codes. I have replaced the actuator on exhaust side and still same issues. Any advice or ideas on what it could be?
@kern417 Great video and explanation, I have a question regarding the vanos actuator, and what seems to be the ever eluding Vanos Solenoid, am I correct in understanding that the B58 engine does NOT have Vanos Solenoids, I was able to find the actuators on the back, the error message I am geting is: "13070B VANOS, inlet, cold start not adjustable", I changed the actuators both the inlet and exhaust, but the error did not go away. HOWEVER, oddly enough, when the engines warms up the error has gone away several times. not sure where else to look. I have seen the solenoids everyone, but can't find them on the B58. Does the B58 have the VANOS Solenoids? thank you in advance.
I have fault code "Combustion control, valve lift at idle" not sure of you've seen this code before any ideas on the fix? My pcv membrane split and was replaced but can't get rid of the fault.

@@Jem_auto it can fail for a lot of reasons. Sometimes it just needs to be recalibrated with ISTA. It just depends. Make sure it's properly plugged in too.

@kern417 when you replaced the actuator, did you go ahead and do both the intake and exhaust sides at the same time?
i didn't have to replace mine. if you're having vanos related codes then it will typically say intake or exhaust, so that tells you which one is bad.

They aren't called solenoids but there are central valves bolted to the center of the cam gears.

Could be the central valve. Have you changed any mods recently?
@@kern417 OTS MG flasher stage 1, but code appeared before that was put on but thought it went away with actuator change but it didn’t
