Lyrics
Holding back the years
Thinking of the fear I've had so long
When somebody hears
Listen to the fear that's gone
Strangled by the wishes of pater
Hoping for the arms of mater
Get to me the sooner or later
I'll keep holding on
I'll keep holding on
Holding back the years
Chance for me to escape from all I've known
Holding back the tears
Cause nothing here has grown
I've wasted all my tears
Wasted all those years
And nothing had the chance to be good
Nothing ever could yeah, oh
I'll keep holding on
I'll keep holding on
I'll keep holding on
I'll keep holding on
So tight
I've wasted all my tears
Wasted all of those years
And nothing had the chance to be good
Cause nothing ever could, oh, yeah
Oh...
I'll keep holding on
I'll keep holding on
I'll keep holding on
I'll keep holding on
Holding, holding, holding
That's all I have today
It's all I have to say

Sending you blessings. I know what you mean about this song. ❤

I hope you’re still able to read this in 2024 ❤
Do not give up...may God be with you...👍👍👍🇸🇻

Mick Hucknall is the most underrated vocalist, and he’s pretty highly rated already
My goodness! His voice is still incredible! One of the best ever.
Like butter !❤
Absolutely!
Who is still listening in 2024

Always
yes in the Netherlands, TOP@@nicollynyna
Me!
My friend and I are hanging out in his backyard and listening to this amazing song. Cheers!
This man is 60 years old here and sounds flawless. He is the definition of a natural born singer.
U ain't never lied never
He wrote the song when he was 17 years old 43 years ago. Wow
This song makes me cry every time 🤍
60!!! He was ( is always !!!) so beautiful and what a voice!!!!
Beautiful
I have never seen an audience so connected and in sync with a performer like this. Ever. Even the orchestra. It’s all so beautiful.
Watch David Gilmour Comfortably Numb in Sao Paulo. I think Pompeii is better but the crowd of kids younger than the song jamming is special.
Beautiful
I’m the Son of Roe and i approve this message…
Sounds better than the studio version. Amazing! ❤
This songs makes me think about a time in America when we all holding on together. Now with politics there is so much anger and hate. I want to go back. Please take me back! Love you all!
I agree.
Listening in 2021 - this man is amazing. Who's with me ?
I am! January 5th and I could listen to this song every day of my life and never get tired of it! ❤️
Amazing voice, prick of a bloke
The music of my live...I‘m still listening to this song...
Always good on the ears
Had him on utube Xmas morn for five hours,we could not stop listening.
I was on my way to a drug treatment program when this song was out in 1985 or 1986. I would listen to this song and just reflect on my life at that time. I have not use drugs since 1986.
Top man!
Im on day 12, assigned by my probation officer..🖤 I go for walks at night and play this on my phone, over and over while I'm walking..🎚🎶
*Update - My case was closed March 9 everybody. Im officially off of probation. Was a good thing actually. Made me realize I cant wild' out in public and how and when to show restraint.. Also haven't smoked pot in almost 11 months so it feels good giving up that unproductive vice of mine. Also realized tequila was the reason I got in trouble in the first place.. So, gave that up too..✌
Brian Hardy 🙏🙏🙏🙏🙏🙏🙏❣️
Ohh well done buddy... I have no clue who you are... But man I'm happy to hear that 👍 way to go
Was born in 1986. Beautiful year it was. Keep the faith
Sound's better live than in any studio recording. Unbelievable vocalist.
And, the best Hair!
He sounds as good as he ever did. This is a song that all genres loves.
His voice is still incredible
His voice is incredible ❤
Dudes vocals seem timeless who's with me ??
I think he's only gotten better with time.
Must say I prefer the 1992 Montreux performance, but he's still fantastic
ME
Just unbelievable
He’s not signing live
Who else is listening to this song with a smile on there face remembering the 80s when times were simpler
Hell yeah meeee. This song will be with me for the rest of my life. I loved this song as a kid and here I am at 46 still digging it
More than a smile... lots of emotion
Maybe not simpler, but better. Before Facebook and Influencers and all that shit
A favorite song of mine
First song I heard on the radio upon arriving in the States as we drove down the freeway from the airport, seeing the downtown lights and tall buildings back in '86.
There is real genius in this song. Simply Red, seriously underrated.
He's never underrated.
No autotune, no stupid costumes, no half naked women, no smartphones in the air, people actually dancing and singing to God given talent.
‘God’ had fuck all to do with it!
AMEN to that!
Good isn't it?
Amen!
Mick has a stunning voice. Sounds exactly the same as 30 years ago
To be honest I'm not a big Simply Red fan - I just haven't listened to all that much stuff and never owned an album - but like most of us who were around in the 80s/90s in the UK it's part of the scenery. For whatever reason I had this song in my head today and so I've gone on youtube to listen to it.. and I came across this. Wow! I might have passed up the next time I could have seen Mick Hucknall performing because he's been off the radar for so long - but having heard this, I'm surprised in the good way - he was always an incredible singer and it sounds like he's one of the few who hasn't lost the magic stuff over these past decades.
Morris
Good....!!!!!
Kay Jay: Absolutely agree 👍
not exactly but the slight crackle actual adds to it.
George Michael, Simply Red, Queen, David Bowie, Pink Floyd, Police, Dire Straits, Michael Jackson, U2, Elton John, Daryl Hall 'n John Oates, Phil Collins, Tina Turner, Billy Joel, Bruce Springsteen.....80's and 90's, safe to say, what an Era!!!
If you don't mind, I'd like to add Eddie Money. RIP.
If u don't mind, I'd like to add Toto, foreigner, Journey, Stan bush, Lindsay Buckingham, Ric Ocasek, Heart, Don Henley, Steve Perry, Peter Cetera, Joey Scarbury, Jon Secada, Chris De Burgh, Johnny Hates, Black, John Waite, Century, Elton John, Duran Duran, Bee Gees, Fleetwood Mac, ABBA, Whitesnakes, Benjamin Orr, Paul Young, Chicago, Richard Mars, Berlin, Carly Simon, Alphaville, Air Supply, Earth Wild & Fire, Bryan Ferry, Eric Carmen, Lisa Stansfield, Eurythmics, Commoders, Paula Abdul and more, Yeah What an Era.
The reason why that era made such good music was because each one was unique, each one sang about real life and experiences, thats what makes these songs timeless. So glad I grew up in those times.
If you don’t mind, I’d like to add Prince if not done yet ... RIP ...
Antonio, I have to include the 70's as well. Luther, Barry White, Earth, Wind N Fire, etc.....
To only stand and sing with nothing elaborate around you is pure talent! No dancing, acrobatics etc, just a beautiful voice! That's enough to entertain people!
Imagine the tingling mick would have felt when the audience sang back.. he wrote that piece at 17 years old! His voice is like gold.
I was thinking the same thing, he hasn’t lost it at all….like a fine wine.
I think that his voice isn't like a wine. It's sounds like a original studio version times.
His voice is definitely holding back the years. Still an amazing voice.
Yes.
Unique voice for sure, pitch perfect and such a nice tone. Could listen too him all day..
Yaaasss. He still has it! Love it!
Legend
😲😲😁😁😂😂
You know when you see a video of a singer doing a song they first recorded 35 years ago and they struggle to hit the high notes because their voice is worn with age?
THIS AIN'T ONE OF THOSE VIDEOS!
33 years on and Mick hasn't lost even the slightest bit of vocal range. His voice is still as pure and unique as ever. Truly one of the greatest voices of our time.
🖒🖒🖒💖💔💗💚💙💜♪♫♬
You know at first I thought no way he is sounding the same as the recorded one, and thought he was lip syncing. But he was really singing and he sounded so good.
He is one of a kind. Love him
marmaly yep! Totally rocked this song
Hello Marmaly. I really couldn't`t agree more with your comment. His 58 year old voice is quite superb.
Take care and keep listening to quality music.
Sincerely
John ( UK )
Can you imagine? One song written when he was a teenager should prove to be so good, so solid and so, so dear to people that they can sing every lyric, every word, on time and in time. Better yet, to stand up there, be silent and let the crowd carry the tune - I can only imagine. How glorious.
Teenagers often write really good songs, think of George Michael with "Careless Whisper"
Sweet memories, Simply gorgeous red. Performance outstanding
33 years after the original recording and his voice hasn't aged a day.
Truly a masterp[iece.
Unbelievable isn't it. Truly marvellous performer.
VelociPat stop it ! Made me feel creaky 😂
Truly gifted, he’s close friends with my uncle Derek, what a talent
Was just thinking that. Amazing, talented fella
@@alexanderforever well my uncle Simply Red is close friend with Derek
January 1st of year 2023 and this song is still as captivating as the first day i heard it ❤️
January 25th! Totally agree!
ME TOO. ONE OF MY FAVORITES
@@MoosyMcCow January 26th! Ditto!
Yebo yes
2nd February, I'm 11, but I listen to 80's, not alot of 11 year olds have that quality
Gorgeous man with a velvet voice……❤❤❤❤
The best thing about learning English is to cry on the sounds that you loved before but now hits into your soul.
I could listen him and Sade the rest of my life!!
Me too, definitely making love music
Me too💯❤️❤️❤️❤️
Same
I’m happy to do that 👍
My two favs as well
Unbelievable that Mick sounds this good not only live, but 33 years after the original recording. Absolutely incredible. Thank you for sharing.
Mick is holding back the years he has a smoking voice. I could go on n on he sounds even better 30pluss ty for sharing
Pitch perfect. Amazing talent.
He has kept his voice in good health , it has a lot to keeping yourself fit, and kept his lungs in good health and fit ..
Yeah, that is shockingly good. Absolutely nailed that.
@ekim andersomYou weren't alive in America in the 80's. Ask me how I know.
Still the strongest clearest vocals, amazing…
I’d put him up there with Steve Perry as the most beautiful, recognizable voices in music.
Or how to age with class...and elegance..👍👍🇸🇻🇸🇻
Oh my god wow - his voice hasn’t changed at all 😲 I’m in shock how perfect he sounds - I’m in tears 😢
The way that crowd is singing along is enough to know that this song hit the right points in people's lives and hearts forever in time.
Not just "people" but everyone from the UK im assuming and America....I'm Canadian and we are 80's radio babies. This song was played always on Vancouvers rock fm channel LG73. I miss those times...
Definitely, and also at how good he has remained at his craft!! He plays the crowd like he owns them - and he does!
Music and food are the 2 things that connect people to the core of beautiful memories.
Classic and Charming
I think "people" is more inclusive than singling out everyone from the UK and America. Especially since the crowd in this video is mostly Dutch. Unless there's another species besides people living there who is touched by this song.
The '80s with its timeless music. Rescued from addiction's scrap heap and brought into a way of life that continues to amaze me on a daily basis. 🤙😎✌🙏
Wow haven’t heard this song in a long time. Still priceless. Kids today have no clue what great music there is. ❤
Love how he sticks to the original sound and doesn’t change melodies and that… sings it how people want to hear it.. :)
Love that is the way he does it too!
Rightttt
No need to fine tune a perfect song.
Yes!!
So many artists change the songs when they sing them live, drives me crazy. Paul Rogers from Bad Company does it all the time
How is it possible that his voice is even richer and stronger than it was years ago when this song came out. This transports me to another place!
Has a gift, and practices
@@trolltracker Rhetorical question. . . requires no reply!
The whole production of this concert was superb.
@@sj4320 I totally agree. Don't you wish you could have been there?
@@debrasorge8991 sure would. But the video of it have to suffice
When this was release back in 1985 I was 20, barely married 2 years and our daughter was not even a year old. Now at the fine age of 58 this song means so much more than it did at that time. Truly powerful and hopefully I look back in another 20 years to think I had no clue at 58.
His voice is like a warm, enveloping, golden sunset.
Well put!✌
Gaaaaaaaayyyyyyyyy
👊🙏
Well said.
No wonder why he slept with about 2000 women 😅
He may have aged but his voice is still as perfect as it was when this song came out in the 80's. Just Beautiful.
fully agreed!
I agree . Still on point after all these years
@@rockcrowe69ify He almost sounds better than in studio when this song came out ..... I've got shivers
Best version I have heard Magic
I think he is sexier.
Know you have exceptional taste in quality music my friend ❤
Thank you!!
A soul voice, sounds simple wonderfull!
Rarely does a person 30-40 yrs later sound better than before. Only the great ones get better.
So true !
Absolutely ❤
It brought me to tears. His voice is so beautiful.
very rare you see ppl who sound exactly like the videos ..usually its autotuned to high heaven but he really does sound amazing live ...same as michael jackson did live i struggle to think of many who are great live singers
Masterful voice
What a voice. He hasn’t lost a step in his singing
he sounds pretty much the same.
Wonderful voice...a dream
All time faves
Hearing this always makes me remember Rodney’s wedding in Only Fools and Horses, and Del Boy realizing he’s getting older and reflecting on life after the guests have gone.
Amazing voice ❤️
Wow! I never seen a crowd so in tune with an artist 😭🙏🏽
Aside from Michael Jackson’s Wembly Performance in 1988, I can’t think of one either
2:15 chills. I can’t imagine the feeling of hearing 10,000+ people singing the words you wrote back at you. This is absolutely golden
oh my god yes!!!! 🤩
Life’s purpose fulfilled!
the look on his face pricelesss
Absolute perfection. The song, the vocal and the performance. I wonder if he's aware of the fact that he's one of the best ever performers
Greatest singer on earth. THE GOAT. ❤❤❤
This song is timeless. The late 80s had some of the best of music.
Indeed, it is!!!❤❤
Totaly agree, the 80’s were of an incredible musical richness (despite some horrors, but good...) and we were 16,17,18 and all beautiful and full of hope...
Liz Carrillo I agree!!
Yes ma'am it is..keep holding on to it..😀
only some of the best?
Voice frozen in time...beautiful!!
John Letson I cant believe his voice has held up this good for this long.
Yes and I seen a performance by Taylor Dane and her vocals are still on point also when she performed "I Will Always Love You"
I also like the Isley Brothers version of this song
I was just going to say the same its amazing
Yes!!!!❤❤
2023 and forever rocking Mick
Simply put, Mark has the eternal charisma, he is such a versatile singer who gave us such precious and unforgettable times with his talent and wonderful voice... That presentation was magical, it is an epitome of the 80s that remained engraved in hearts and here it was proved! Now, we are left with the most significant memories of the best time that can never be replaced! ❤💫❤
Whaaaaaaaaaat!!! he sounds exactly as good as he was years ago.....and live!!!! WTF!!! Simply Amazing!!!
REAL talent, which is what we grew up with in the 8o's, lasts thru the end of time!!! Hes awesome
For a while I was seriously wondering if he was play-backing.. its that similar.
Steve Armstrong. I know right
So effortless. That means he sings alllll the time. 😄
I agree with you,he gets better.🤩
Damn!!! That voice is still on point! Hasn’t lost a single bit of his singing abilities over the years. I love that he is still performing.
Your not kidding...fantastic
The song he wrote when he was 17 is still his best. It's OK to peak early, though. Most never peak.
He's tight...
"tight" means drunk in this context. How can you tell? @@kennethmccartney6468
I have always loved this song!!😄
This is what Fine Red Wine sounds like 💗🎶🍷✊🏾
Goosebumps and lots of good memories
This song is timeless, and he still nails it.
holy shit, this guy sounds equally amazing as he did years ago.
Still listening 3/7/23 ... this has got to be in the Top10 best love songs in the last 40 years 😊♥️😊
There's just no way this guy ever got the credit he (and the band) deserves. Effortless, amazing.
Not to say they could have not done better, but they were huge for around 10 years in Europe and South America. You could not open a radio for 2 hours without hearing their song and they could sell any stadium or festival at that time period. Neither did their popularity ever crash like some other pop acts after their peak.
i agree ,,yes he is amazing..luv his music j felice
Anyone here who spent their teenage years listening to Simply Red? We were fortunate that our music still touches the soul. Today’s music... I just can’t. I will always come back to Simply Red, Simple Minds, Erasure... Anyone feel the same?
I wouldn't call most of today's junk "music".
I for one did. Our music reached deep down into the heart and soul. I agree. Today's music is just noise.
I was 16 years old when I first saw the video on MTV. Still love it
I din't listen to Simply Red in my teens I was a bit older but you cannot ignore great music whatever Genre it is from
Music doesn't make sense any longer? It's all down hill from there. I think I urge you to check out Jason Mraz.
If you're not familiar with his work, he's more of a singer/songwriter. When I watch him perform you can just tell he's just happy to be there.
His voice is fantastic! Live performances sound exactly like the studio recording.
Listen to I'm Yours and if it doesn't make you smile then you don't have a soul! 😉
❤❤❤❤preciosa canción
Mick his the best live singer I've ever heard, I've seen enough as well, LEGEND

Flawless
This guy became so humble .....you can see on the shoots. OMG, respect. He enjoys just.....SINGING. AWESOME! UNIVERSAL.
you couldn't imagine in 2022 that the songs of the 1980s were so perfect. Emotionally have we achieved something stronger since then? Honestly I don't think so...
Amen brother! And I agree! We have taken a significant step backwards with what’s (tried to be) forced on us these days

Yes he can sing the song sounds like it's now. I'm listening 2021 today
THIS is one of those songs when you remember when you heard it for the first time!!!
Seriously stunning voice still.
When singers get older, their voices change and their quality of singing as well. Not much for this man, he is seriously quite letterly is 'Holding Back The Years'.
Chills. This song breaks my fucking heart into little pieces. A timeless masterpiece and sung with a sadness and longing that makes it more beautiful than ever.
Is that you “Percy” ? 🤔 this song is a masterpiece in songwriting and vocal delivery ... Mick Hucknall is one of THE true musical superstars .
He wrote this song in his bedroom when he was 17 as his parents were getting divorced. I saw him sing it with an acoustic guitar at the Royal Albert Hall London.
Well said!
@Paul: It’s about his relationship /lack of relationship with his mother who abandoned him. He kept hoping for one but it never happened. In my opinion a very strange woman.
❤️💔
It's wonderful to see youth like myself listening to such magic 😭

The best male voice. I am 87 and get chills listening. It also is awesome for the soul.👍👍
Never gets old!He sounds exactly like the very first time!Unbelieveable❤
I read he wrote this song due to his mother's departure in his early life. We are so lucky to know his talent, the world is a better place because of his music. 🤍
Listening to this song as a child and HEARING it as an adult 😢😢hits different..
This track takes me back to a fantastic time when we had incredible music just like this.
