They raised a man who had good values, loved his family and loved his world neighbors. What more can a parent do in today's world?? Mark will be missed by many many people.
I'm only 30 but I lost my father at 19 because of cancer, he was 55. Glad I had the years I did with him but there are plenty of times I feel robbed of certain experiences as I get older. But then you realize some people get even less time with their mother or father -- I know mine taught me a lot in just those years we had together, I'd be a lot worse off now in life without those 19 years.
wow sorry for the lost. I lost my father at 65 this June 6, I miss him dearly, I seem lost with out him. He went in for heart surgery and passes away a little less than 4 days later
Rest in peace my brother. We will miss the railroad education that you gave us! I learned more about the railroad from you than any book I've ever read. So thank you Shoestring.
His father passed away before he did, according to the obituary. Shoestring must have kept that private and it must have happened not long after this video.
Watching this is bitter/sweet. Glad Mark was able to get back to his dad's place before he caught the West Bound. Shoestring will forever be a legend to me.
We all have been so blessed to have known Mark through his channel and I feel... we are better humans for his presence of giving us so much of his "light" on our planet! Ride on Shoestring! Thank you for being you! Namaste.
Shoestring was very lucky to have any good family. I started learning late in my life several years ago, late forties that almost all of my relatives especially my mother have always been very narcissistic and psychopathic to me my whole life. Im 56 now and just came across Shoestrings videos. I reminds me of way back in the early 80's me and a friend taking a long ride on one of these. We were kids and wernt prepared hardly at all but rode a thousand miles one way and back. God bless Shoestring and his family.
Shoestring looks kinda sad in this video. I'm so glad he had time with his dad. He's truly a person I will never forget. Ride them heavenly train rails RIP ❤
I totally understand my friend my dad will have been gone for 3 years on June 7 I do still talk to my dad but I can't call him on the phone anymore. Our dad's are in a better place now! Brian from Colorado
Such a kind, intelligent, humble man. I just learned of Shoestring (thanks Corn). I’m so very sorry to learn that he passed. I’ve spent hours watching his train videos. Hope you’re riding high in the sky. ✌️❤️😎

Shoestring had a hunch, when you crank past 55 years, you develop these vibes, and you cover your basis. I was 59 when I got the vibes, it was either time for me or my dad who was 98 to head on home to that great mansion in the heavenly skies. It was a month later, my dear best friend, my confidant, my papa departed this earth, no more pain and no more sorrow. My dad and I were deaf, wore hearing aids enjoying bantering each other about it; "huh'... whatsa matter you deaf,...oh didn't hear yah got something in my ear" , and thats when we pretend to remember to turn our hearing aids on. I sorely miss my dad, ...and my dear mother who followed dad home 6 years later. Don't ignore the hunch or that tapping behind your head, visit your dad, your momma, never dismiss the power of God's Angles when they tug on your heart. RIP Mark, my condolences to Mark's family, and close friends. LEO/MIL/Analyst retired (65+ YO).
Thank you for sharing about the banter you & your dad had, really gave me a chuckle...those are the types of memories we cherish when we lose a parent (till you meet again!). Thank you for your service to the country.
Rest in Peace Mark AKA Shoestring.. He was loved and will be missed.. Dad seems like a pretty good ol boy himself. My condolences to Mark's friends and family, We sure loved him on here.
The house I lived in before I bought this farm had a grass runway right behind my backyard. I used to watch my neighbor fly in and out and have his friends fly in and out. A few times they flew in at night
As others have said,... enjoy your dad. I lost mine last August 2023. He was 86, me 56, so I was really lucky; however, it hit like a freight train over the holidays as I usually deer hunted with him during this time. Just the other day I saw the biggest buck of my life. Did not shoot cause the one I wanted to brag about it too is no longer here.
This touched me as I know when my brother who was handicapped was murdered 2020 and my mom followed him months after. She was 82 my brother only 59, but we all live here together in the same driveway on family farm....since then I have become so sensitive to keeping any harm from the animals..I mean I can't kill spiders even but when you mentioned the big buck...I had spoken to my neighbor as we allow him to hunt, but I think I must have made him think about letting that big old grandpa buck live as I think they have survived the yrs of the dangers from guns and highways and it makes me feel they are special and like us people, some have a good long life and survived while others don't get to have that chance...don't know why I am sharing this actually. Losses have been hard and sorry for your loss too.
Ruby my African Grey Parrot loved your bird calls, she answered you. My dad rode the rails when he was young out of Milton freewater Oregon. I wish he was alive to tell me his stories again.
First off, thank you for your wonderful videos. They take the mind off the troubles of the day. They remind me of the adventures of Huckleberry Finn books I'd read in my younger years. You are the Renaissance man of the rails. From a rough start to a refined recovery. May God bless you and keep you.
No need to apologize for "not putting up a video for a while": Shoestring - we knew you were visiting your Dad would be busy with that - so we did not expect any! This one here is a pleasant surprise -thanks a lot! I for one will wait for a video once you're "back on the rails". Travel safe old friend!
"Train Ride West" usually means going to the great beyond. I wonder if the title of the video was a secret message. Shoestring was very intelligent. Interesting...
I know Shoestring is riding God's chariot from one end of heaven to the other, and camping on his golden shores. RIP Shoestring we will miss you, until we see you again.
Stayed there many times. Still do work with the city. Love to see you making the most of your time with your dad. These are memories that you will treasure later on.
Beyond Happy Mark that you were able to Share The Air with your Dad! I had to laugh @11:34 when you mentioned "I'm going to take all the Damn Video I can get" when you both were in your Dad's backyard 🤣 Loved hearing your Elmer J. Fudd as he was hunting Seagulls! Never worry about being absent Shoestring! Life can get busy for all of us. I'll continue to send Good and Positive Vibes to You and The Hobo Shadows who Ride with You in this Community! Thank you for sharing your precious Dad time with all of us too! It's comforting to know that you include us in your Family Time! Safe travels and give your Dad a Hug from The Hobo Shoestring Posse Too! Cheers and Blessings From COW-lumbus, Ohio MOO ❤👋🙏
Dad has a nice looking piece of property. It's good that dad is active, keeps him healthy mentally and physically. May God's blessings be with the both of you. Take care on the ride, remain safe and stay warm. I enjoyed this video.😎🚂🚃🚃🚃✝
Glad to see you enjoying time with you dad brother. Unfortunately, to many people don't take the time to slow down and just enjoy the time. Looking forward to the riding video, it's going to be good weather for that. Be safe.
Glad to see you spending time with your dad. Looking forward to more videos, whatever you're doing, whether it's riding or just chillin somewhere. Many thanks and safe travels as always! 🚂🚃🚃💜
it was very gut-wrenching news to both of Aussie (Australia) & Kiwi (New Zealand) Train & Railway Fans (Fanatics) to find out of this very tragic news about the death of train ride loving friend &/or mate of Hobo Shoestring of Mark Nichols which was very unexpected & very sad of course. HoBo, I'm 72 now and Love this video. Brings back SO Many memories growing up on our farm with my Dad. Working in the Pecan Orchard, Apple Orchard, Peach Orchard and all the acres of fields and gardens of vegetables as well as the hunting and fishing. I miss Him SO much. Those precious memories never fade away.

Enjoy all your videos, good to see you with your dad. I lost my mom at 19 and my dad at 29, and my 24 year old son at 45, I’ll be 76 this week and I wish I could talk to them each one more time. If I were you I would be getting an apartment in Texas, you don’t have that many days left together. Like it says in the song, “you don’t know lonely until it’s chiseled in stone “. I know you miss Conner. 🙏🙏🙏
REALLY MISSED YOU BRO!!!!! GLAD YOU COULD FINALLY GET OUT TO SEE YOUR DAD MAN...I KNOW YOUVE BEEN TRYING TO GET TOGETHER FOR A LONG TIME 👍👍👍❤️❤️❤️😁😁👍👍❤️👍❤️
Well done Mark. Thanks for sharing and best wishes to your Dad who lives in a lovely place. I see you got your love of nature from your home and upbringing. Godbless👍

He passed due to complications from a motorcycle accident a few weeks after his 70th birthday. Took him out to the New York Mountains in the Mohave a month or so before his accident and had a good time around a fire telling stories; admiring nature. It was our last camping trip...but I will never forget it.
Hey Mark, I just wanted to tell ya again that your train videos are just awesome bud, and the fact that you have a deep respect and bond with family just makes it twice as good by that alone. Be safe, ok? Mark from Idaho

According to his obituary, shoestring's dad is also deceased?
His obit says his dad actually passed before he did. Shoestring must have kept that private and it must have been not long after this video.
