Another reason to remove the drywall and insulation is that all the water damage, mold, rodent, and insect problems, you don't want to overlook something that will be an issue when you finish.
I’m thinking next week should be, removal of all the nails in the boards. The nails from holding the sheet rock and the insulation in. That will be a lot of fun! 😳

Exactly. It's way better to check out what is going on behind all of that and not assume that everything is fine and end up paying for it later by having to demo everything they put in. Plus they can clean it all and make sure it's okay structurally. It's wild to me that people would remodel a house and not do those things, especially when it's in the shape they bought it in.

Ok…I’ve realized that every couple should remodel a house before getting into a marriage. I think you realize a person’s temperament and work ethic. I’m sure everyone gets tired and cranky but Nick is such a hard worker and a perfect partner for you Jenna. You guys are so good together.

The lighting in this house used the latest technology of the late 50s called GE Low Voltage Wiring System. The lights are powered by 120V AC but are controlled by a 24V low voltage system. At 7:00 you can see the thick black cable entering the metal box from the right providing the 120V power. On the left you see the Red/Black/White low voltage wires. Hanging just to the left of the light socket is the low voltage relay that controls the lights. The lights are 120V but instead of a switch to turn them on this system uses latching relays controlled by the low voltage wires. Low voltage wiring does not require the extra insulation which is why you see the Red/Black/White wires without the extra outer insulation required for the 120V wire. The switches on the walls were 24V not 120V. These switches were not standard toggle switches but were momentary push button ( or toggles that acted as push buttons). Pushing the on button would trigger the latching relay turning the power on at the light, pushing the off would turn the power off at the latching relay. With this system, they could have multiple switches control a single light, or single switch control sets of lights. A light could be controlled individually and as a set. Some systems had automation with timers, and other controls and some even had ability to control by telephone. Was very high tech for the day.

Yeah, I mentioned in another comment that the LV wiring looks like it was for an early home automation system, but I wasn't familiar with exactly what system it was. I'm sure in the day, it was really expensive, and very swanky! Today for home automation, I'd make sure all switch boxes have neutral in them, and maybe run some LV control cable as well, depending on what system you want to go with. I know lots of modern systems use RF, but nothing beats the reliability of hard wired controls!
@@gorak9000 I've seen these before in homes built in the 70's. Even homes built in the 80's did the "centralize all the three way switches" bit, so you could turn off all the lights from the center of the house. The difference here is the LV stuff has evolved greatly since, where as in the 50's they would have used relays and whatever wire was cheap to use at the time. Today you'd probably see the LV wires run with cat-5 ethernet type cable, and a "central" relay location. But you'd only see this in large commercial buildings now due to the savings in energy, since LV wiring is cheaper.
The catch is that since relays are involved with 120V lighting, eventually those relays burn out from the electrical arc'ing where as a conventional two way or three way switch could just be replaced in 30 years.
Nice to see I was not the only one that caught this detail. GE low voltage lighting systems are very cool. My high school had on for all of the lighting on the second floor and yes we also had the telephone control module. I hope they kept all of the hardware. The relays and switches can be hard to find.
Stripping this structure back to the framing is the right thing to do. This allows for a forensic inspection of all structural members that may have been compromised by water infiltration. A complete electrical, plumbing and HVAC assessment will be needed. By having all of this exposed it will make facilitating those items much easier. Furthermore, the ability to have mold mitigation and pest mitigation just got easier. This includes fumigation and /or preventative pest control. Been there, done that. You're on the right track.

Once the place is stripped get the roof fixed before doing anything else, then once its not raining inside make sure its safe from mold id say, after deciding on a layout and studding bring in an electrician and plumber. Some of that wiring is from the knob and tube era. While its all exposed is a great time to update it and get your plumbing roughed in :)after that you can start making it a home again :).
Lastly, a good tip while its all exposed and a great modernization for the house....run cat6a ethernet throughout with at least one jack in each room. This will help with getting internet all over your house, and you wont have to deal with weird wifi problems. Its trivial too to add access points to boost signal to weak areas and you can plug in devices like tvs, printers, computers, etc without a worry about connectivity.

Fix roof and address foundation issues (if any). A house is a sandwich that is really dependent on the robustness of the bread.
Hi Jenna, Maybe you can create the ceiling envelope on the exterior. James (Jim) Cutler AIA exposes the rafters and roof underlayment in his designs. He has done a lot of projects in the San Juan Islands near your home. Jim designed Xanadu for Bill gates on Lake Washington too. The clear fir and cedar are rare and beautiful so I think you should definitely consider looking at leaving the ceilings open. It will be nice when the demo is over and you can wear cute clothes. Haha❤

Knob and tube wiring is too old for this house

None of that wiring is knob and tube. And the wiring they said is "too small" is some kind of low voltage wiring for a very early "home automation" system (that originally would've been super swanky and expensive when it was new). All of the wires that are actually carrying loads are proper and up to code. They're just the standard cloth covered wire that was used before romex with plastic outer sheath was around. It has plastic insulators for the individual conductors under the cloth sheath that's basically the same that you get in romex today, and there isn't really anything wrong with it. There's nothing wrong with re-using any of it where nothing needs to be changed. My parent's house that was built in the late 70's that I grew up in has the same wire. It actually has a mix of plastic covered romex and cloth covered wire - it must've been right when they were transitioning to the plastic covered and they were still using up whatever cloth covered they had.
You and Nick doing demo/home remodeling is definitely a good test for relationship longevity. Lol. So far, Nick is passing with flying colors. ❤❤

All the wood is in amazing condition, which is excellent news. I have to agree the electricity has got to go, 60 years ago the rules were different. The next step has to be the roof. Until you know the place is dry there is little you can do. But you knew that I am certain. The good news is aside from one beam the structure is sound. There is "ONE" job you could do before the roof has to come out: remove all the nails from the studs. Avery very boring job, but something you will probably have to do anyway (except for the walls that are being removed). Good luck

I just saw your short on the expense of your bins. The bin issue was one of my biggest expenses on the renovation of my 100+ yr. Old building. We saved, gave away and reused as much as possible. You are doing a great job, don’t pay attention to those who have no idea what they are talking about.
Jenna if you haven’t tried a push broom I highly recommend! Bigger surface swept and easier on your back! Looks great and stay safe!❤

@@starklingspars8956 I was wondering about this as I’ll have to do the same soon, and from what I can see spraying with a vinegar and water solution is the best option. Theres also a spray I can’t remember the name of that you can put in a fogger. As it dries it crushes the mould. Apparently it’s made from natural stuff - but I can’t remember the name off hand - and I’d have to do more research. But I’ll probably go for that two pronged approach when I do this…
White vinegar will kill mold spores but until the house has a roof and is totally dry more mold can grow.

Wearing those white full body plastic overalls are pretty good at preventing the itching problem when removing insulation. Great vid
Most of it appeared to be rockwool which isn't nearly as bad as fiberglass. Rockwool still shouldn't be handled without gloves. Fiberglass on the other hand is LITERATELY millions of needle shaped glass fragments, and if you so much as graze yourself with it, you will be itchy for weeks, or months depending on how much of those fragments got tracked into your home, clothes washer, etc.
Fiberglass insulation is nice and cheap, but it's only one step down from asbestos in terms of how you handle it.

Wool is a really good insulator. it's bacterial repellent and water resistant. Also recyclable

When we were remodeling our house I went to the thrift store on senior discount day (yes, we are still doing that in our 70's, our eighth one) and bought a bunch of cute outfits on the 50% off rack. I wore cute clothes everyday and trashed them pretty good. Instead of washing anything too disgusting I threw them out. My husband had a good laugh seeing what I came out in everyday.
They should be wearing hazmat suits. Also washing clothes with tons of mold now means the mold is in the washer/dryer.

These videos are SO compelling! There's just enough dialog to keep it fun. I loved that moment when you reached for the insulation and he dropped it. I've seen battles start between couples in a moment like that. As hard as you are working I see miles of staples or nails ...on the exposed wall and ceiling...and those all need to be flush ...so removal or cutting them off . Your strength and focus amazing. wishing you every good thing.

You've already spent far too much time in there without masks. Airborne mold is essentially invisible. If you don't treat it at this stage, you really haven't done anything yet.

The American way of building houses can be really a pain in the a**. Renovating them is really a bigger challenge than brick-built houses that have no insects in them and are not rotten in the core.

I completely understand bin pride. My partner (at the time) and I demo'd a 40' trailer home and put everything, except a few things we were going to upcycle and the metal frame, into 1 bin. Felt so much happiness when the pickup guy couldn't believe it was so organized. He expected to get 3 bin charges from us. Soooo satisfying!!

Renovation are usually present as a very stressful process and your way of showing it is as slow process of love. The music and the vibes are on point.
Now get sprayers and spray vinegar and water everywhere. And let it dry, then repeat again. It will kill all the mould spores that might be concealed.
Unfortunately it won’t. Vinegar (much less diluted vinegar) doesn’t kill mold
My home reno guy said hydrogen peroxide kills mold. I use vinegar too

@@ceccato91Its H2O2 that doesn't work. White vinegar is a natural acid. It's non-toxic and harmless to the environment. It's also can kill up to 82% of mould species. Its extremely cheap and simple, no special equipment needed. Dissolved borax also works in a spray bottle and also bleach. The most important point is most mould needs to be physically removed. We are talking here about spraying down what looks like uncontaminated remaining material. There are several advantage over light (the correct treatment being IR not blue) as soaked treatment penetrates beyond a surface treatment.
@@civiprepper I’m doctor and wrote thesis on microbiology. Vinegar doesn’t kill mold! And physically removing them is dangerous. You’ll just spread microscopic spores.
