Nemo, an adventurous young clownfish, is unexpectedly captured from Australia's Great Barrier Reef and taken to a dentist's office aquarium. It's up to Marlin (Albert Brooks), his worrisome father, and Dory (Ellen DeGeneres), a friendly but forgetful regal blue tang fish, to make the epic journey to bring Nemo home. Their adventure brings them face-to-face with vegetarian sharks, surfer dude turtles, hypnotic jellyfish, hungry seagulls and more. It occurs to me that as a kid, I never quite understood the disability narrative portrayed, both through Dory and through Nemo himself. Really deep stuff!
Me neither. And I also didn't understand the trauma survival narrative with Marlin.

The explanation for the turtles being stoner surfer dudes is that sea turtles actually eat jellyfish for fun in real life since it has the same effect on them as marijuana does for humans, hence the reason that Crash found Dory and Marlon at the group of jellyfish, because the turtles were already there to feed

The correct way when you want to play it for laughs. She isn't her disability, it's just a part of her.
I have memory problems due to trauma and mental health issues and love Dory so much. I like that there’s moments where she remembers stuff and it’s a big deal- it’s a big deal for me too because I don’t retain much new information and get excited when I remember things I didn’t know before.
Funny thing is, Dory doesn't really present herself as someone with JUST memory issues. She feels more autistic, with a type of Asperger's Syndrome that I've heard called "active but odd." It's what I have. I act the exact same way, almost. I know better than to mess with jellyfish, angler fish, and sharks. Whales are okay, for humans. But, my memory problems comes from my type of Asperger's. I'm not sure if anyone else with Asperger's has the same thing exactly. I like Dory, because she's like me. Strangely, I do feel that if she was "normal," her and Marlin would have a romance arc. That whole emotional part where Marlin helps her remember stuff and it touches all of us, makes me think, she likes him, too. And, more than just a goofy, best friend way, too. It's the same depth of feeling I get from Judy in Zootopia when she apologizes to Nick for being so insensitive.

For these scene, the animator locked up himself in a room with picutres of dead members of his family, and after, he copied his facial expression on Dory. That's part why this scene is very emotional + the actress(-es) who did such a great job.

As a parent, letting your children fail is one of the hardest yet most necessary things ever. I'm still struggling with that.
As a parent you are correct. Trying to always protect can greatly reduce their self esteem. I remember watching my 8 month old pulled himself to a standing position holding the couch. Then he looked down and got scared and wanted me to help him. I didn't. He let go landed on his bottom he was all ready to scream and then stopped, looked back up then gave me one of the biggest smiles.
Dude I wish my parents weren't so over protective, now I'm such an anxious sht at every little inconvenience, especially when it comes to talking to people. I forced my parents to let me live alone in a different city for high school and it really helped me gain a bit of independence. But now I'm in freshman collage back home with them because of the pandemic, and it has not been helping me overcome my social anxiety at all.
Especially considering that I'm studying to become a psychologist lmao. I'm trying my best a bit every day though.
Yep, our job as a parent is (among other things) to be a safety net. If you let them try things but make them know they’re gonna be ok even if they fail, they’ll build the confidence to try. If you do everything for them, they’ll never learn, but if they don’t feel safe, they’ll never try. Don’t stop them from going on the monkey bars, just be there to catch if they fall (and make them fall just far enough so they’ll understand)
As scary as Bruce looks, he’s actually very friendly.😊🦈

@@fynnthefox9078 Tbf a lot of real-life sharks are like Finding Nemo's Bruce instead of Jaws Bruce, because a lot of sharks really do just mind their own business and mostly attack humans because they surfers are seals or sea turtles (because the silhouette of a man/woman paddling a surfboard looks a lot like the silhouette of a seal or turtle when you look at them from below in the water). In fact, some divers even pet sharks for fun!

Watching those movies as an adult actually hits different than watching them as a child - and watching them as a parent is even more intense sometimes.
This is probably one of the only family movies that actually has a lesson that's more for the parents than the kids. Parenthood can be like a balancing act there are times when you do have to protect them but also times when you have to let them do things on their own.
Even today, when Marlin tells all the fish to swim down, I still get chills, shouting, "Swim down! Keep swimming! Keep swimming!"

I didn't watch Finding Nemo on the big screen, but I can imagine the utter terror I would have felt seeing that first shot of Bruce.😱
I watched it when I was 4 in cinema and cried my eyes out at the sharks cause I was so scared 🤣

I saw Nemo on the big screen twice in my life, I went to a private screening featuring the original version having the THX logo. I went again for the 3D version

How did u get that at 3? I just knew the mom died by the attack scene. What I didn't know was that Nemo was disabled, the sharks were dealing with addiction but I related to Dory because I can't seem to remember much. 28 now and for some reason my memory has gotten better, I was oblivious mostly.

hello from australia! fun fact: it took me years to realize this movie was so australian. when i was a kid i never noticed the accents or even that it took place in sydney, because in my mind that was just how normal people sounded, and sydney was just a place i knew the name of. mostly i was focused on how funny the seagulls were, cause, yknow, i was a kid. great vid!
Sea turtles ironically love eating jellyfish. So Crush most likely had a snack after saving Marlin and Dory.
Actually, since Crush is a Green Sea Turtles, he only eats seaweed and kelp.
Leatherback Turtles are the ones that eat jellyfish. So maybe a Leatherback friend of Crush came by to help for a minute, then left after the brief visit.
If you pause during Bruce’s introduction you’ll notice he has serrated teeth. They animators were super thorough
ME!!!!! I’m from Australia! Not Sydney, but Melbourne! You’d be welcome anytime! ☺️ was very excited about this reaction due to all the Australian themes in it! Nemo and Marlin’s journey started on the Great Barrier Reef and took them to Sydney, which is around 1,500 miles or 2,414 kilometres. Also this is from Sydney to Cairns (gateway to the GBR) not as the fish swims lol 🙂🙂

I've been to the Great Barrier Reef once, and Melbourne several times. I remember a few years ago, I was wandering around St Kilda and went to see what Luna Park was actually like. It was really small for what I was expecting. Maybe it's because it's pay per attraction, not like Movie World where you pay for admission.

This is my therapy film. My earliest memory of watching it was when I had chicken pox at age 5 and now I often come back to it when I feel ill, sad or simply nostalgic.

One of the MOST nostalgic movies to me, this movie actually oppened the doors for Under Sea animations, after Finding Nemo a lot of filmes under the sea came out... even tho a 2000s movie, the CGI is amazing

Why are people shocked when something tragic happens in a kids' movie?
All kids movies are like that and have been for decades. Kids always cope. In fact, it's important for teaching them how to emotionally deal with things like grief.
Honestly, adults are the ones that always seem fragile about this!
it does make sense I guess, for parents their kid is the most important thing in the world (ideally) and as adults we know the world isn't great or fair so they will do Anything to protect them from threats even if it's just a scary scene in a kids movie. Marlin would totally have been a facebook dad complaining about scary kids movies 😂 that's what the whole movie is about!
I think it’s more the fact that when you’re a kid you don’t realize a lot of things, for example when I was a kid I just understood the basic plot, Nemo gets taken by humans and his dad goes with funny dory on many funny adventures and save his son, happy ending yay!
But now grown up I could realize a lot of they’re psychological issue, discapacities and of course, Marlin’s trauma due to the murder of his wife and 400 children

Well the fact that you, and most everyone else, didn't even realize it as a kid shows that it's NOT too dark for a kids movie.
Disney movies have never been all unicorns and rainbows. They always featured dark themes...just with unicorns and rainbows as part of the story too, in order to make it palatable for kids.
And I don't think that kids films should be all positivity and shielding them from realities like death.
I have a tattoo that says "just keep swimming" on my forearm. My sister and I used to watch this movie every night when we shared a bedroom. It's so nostalgic for me, I absolutely adore this movie. I loved your amazing reaction to this movie, it means so much to a lot of people

Sea turtle diet ranges based on species or age. They’ll eat sea grass, seaweed, fish, sponges, sea cucumbers, and jellyfish, among more things I’m sure.
Also just a couple more things, the French crustacean in the tank is a cleaner shrimp, an animal that eats parasites off of fish, and the anglerfish would likely be female as the females are larger, have the huge infamous teeth, and the lights on their head. Males are much smaller.
About whales, they don’t actually spout water, but warm air from their blowholes. The hairy stuff in their mouth is baleen, which is used to filter out water and keep prey like krill and small fish trapped in its mouth as the water drains through. If you can’t tell I’m quite an animal enthusiast.

Random point, but knowing that the whale "teeth" are called baleen helps me to remember the Italian word for whale, which is balena. :) Many other languages have similar words for whale, based on a Latin root. For instance, the Spanish is ballena and the French is baleine.
And a fun fact I just learned: Baleen are commonly called whalebones, but they are not made of bone! They are made of keratin, like cow hooves, fingernails, and hair. They are flexible but strong and were more sought-after than oil in the 19th century, and their main use was in the construction of corsets.

This movie scared the pants off me when I was a kid (I think it’s responsible for both my love of the beach and my fear of the ocean). Legit I thought you might not do this one oh my GOD I’m glad you did because it’s one of the best movies of all time.

That’s my dad’s favorite Pixar movie ever since, he was a single father.
My son watched this a couple years after it came out he was 3 and the shark part always scared him, but he'd always want to watch it again.
Reminds me of when I took my nephew to see Zootopia in theaters. He was like 7 at the time. He got so scared during the flashback scene with the jaguar going feral that I had to take him to the bathroom where he threw up. But he loves the movie to this day.
There's a lot of factors when it comes to why one movie makes a lot of money and another doesn't. Finding Nemo was made by PIXAR who has had a very clean track record of making top tier movies (with the exceptions of the Cars sequels which were unliked and The Good Dinosaur actually bombed hard) and they are backed by world famous Disney. People go to Pixar because they know what to expect and know it will be a good time investment. The Iron Giant was made by Warner Brother and they didn't really care to advertise it and people were so-so when it came to trusting Warner Brothers to make something that was actually Family Friendly AND worth parent's time. The timing of the release is important too. Studios release what they think are the best family movies at Christmas time, bonus points if it has snow in it. They release more experimental movies in other seasons, they usually have an A and B film/animator crew. However Finding Nemo did get a spring release as it fits the more nature and new life vibe of the season, The Incredibles (By the Maker of The Iron Giant) got the Christmas release the next year. Another factor is what movies are near the release. 2003 didn't have really any kid movies. 1999 had Toy Story 2, Tarzan, Stewart Little, and Freakin' STAR WARS!
Not to mention 3D animation tends to bring in more money than 2d

It makes such a difference how a movie is marketed. The money numbers doesn't necessarily have anything to do with how good the movie is!
(Though it's true it might influence the companies to make sequels or not, true.)
It was also due to marketing or lack thereof. A lot of people didn’t actually know about it because there were hardly any promotions for the Iron Giant.
It's sad because The Iron Giant was (still is) a good movie. Some animated movies are highly underrated but they are gems.

when my son was a toddler, I don't know how many times we watched this on DVD with him sitting on my lap. Disney then put the show on ice and the skaters were fantastic, and for some reason, it seemed more emotional with the live players.
Nemos mom would have survived if she had listened to her husband. Those things they live in are effectively electric force fields.

@@districtskz Part of the tragedy of that opening scene is that the baracuda only found the eggs because Coral showed him the way. Her urge to protect caused harm, just like Marlin's urge to protect causes harm later in the movie. Difference being that Coral died from her mistake, while Marlin got the chance to learn and improve.

The creators of Finding Nemo had to make a public announcement on the "All drains lead to the ocean" as children all over the world were flushing their fish down the toilet expecting them to go free.
Fun Fact: Walt Disney was raised in a Single parent home due to his mother dying, which is why death of a parent is a huge part of many disney movies....

The jellyfish epidemic was going crazy when I was overseas and went swimming in the Mediterranean sea. Everyday, at 1 pm, hordes of these numbing blue jellyfish would wash up near the shore. And the worst part was that they released some of their toxins in the water, so even if you hadnt touched one, it still hurt. I'm not sure if it's still going right now, but it was up until September

In terms of the box office, it's often not about how good the movie is - it's about how many theaters the film played in, how much was spent on the marketing, how much anticipation and buildup there was for the film, the loyalty of a fan base - it's largely down to stuff like that.

Dark theory:
• "Nemo" it's a word from Latin.. means nobody... so in reality the movie it's about a parent accepting that he lost all his family. So we see Marlin with the 5 stages of grief: Denial, anger, bargaing, depression and finally (when Nemo goes to a "trip") acceptance. Finding Nemo, then... it's about a father realizing that he's alone and how to move on with his life.

• Anger: 18:16
• Bargaing: when he encounters the whale
• Depression: 32:21
• Acceptance: 38:36
• When Marlin finds Dory, he starts the process of forgetting such a traumatic event. It's also a theory that Dory it's another form of "dorma".. that's sleeping or dreaming in italian (I believe). It's just on his dreams that Marlin can start recovering.

@@aubryellaotero1064 No... it's the name of the captain of the novel of Jules Verne "Twenty thousand leagues under the seas", then he revealed that was actually the Prince Dakkar. Captain Nemo it's how he kept his anonymity.
The name of the submarine it's Nautilus.
Nemo is also connected to the odissey cause when Ulisses gets captured by the cyclop he tricks him by telling him that is name is nemo "nobody".
So this can also be a reference to the odissey, since it was an odissey to get to his son and bring him back home.
The tradition of Disney to use single parents is because Walt Disney's own mother died in a gas accident in a house he bought for her. So for a long while you saw no mothers. However later it became more of a shortcut to avoid creating a character you don't have a place for (this is done with a lot of Disney Channel shows).
I’m glad that you are watching this. This is one of the Pixar movies that is very dear to me. I used to watch it a lot when I was little and the “Beyond the sea” song was something I sang very much when I was little and that I still hum to this day.
Fun fact Nigel the pelican is voiced by Geoffrey Rush who was in "The King's Speech" as Lionel Logue the speech therapist and in the franchise "Pirates of the Caribbean" as Captain Barbossa.
Crush is voiced the director himself Andrew Stanton (who also voices one of the fireflies in A Bug's Life and Zurg in Toy Story 2) while Squirt is voiced by Nicholas Bird, the son of Brad Bird, the director of The Incredibles, Ratatouille and Incredibles 2.

Well unless they are crappy parents who never change and continue to be helicopter parents or narcissistic. But when a parents actually changes for you and sees their mistakes, it's nice to be back with them.
Me: So I just watched this film where a serial killer brutally murders a mother and almost all of her children while her husband watches, leaving only one child alive. The father raises his only remaining son, who as a result of the killer’s attack is born with a physical impairment. One day, the son is taken from his father and kept as a prisoner in a foreign land. The father must travel far from home to find him and can only rely on the aid of a mentally-handicapped woman for help.

You know whats really sad? Nigel isn't aware that Nemo is still alive by the end of the movie. He leaves Marlon on a depressing note feeling guilty thinking Nemo's dead

Australian here 😁 I loved this movie as a kid because they finally included Australia in something and the accents were familiar to me 😂you have to come to Australia at least once in your life.
This movie was also I. Theaters. No had seen water animation like this before. I was only 8 but saw it twice in theaters…because my dad who was older and in his 50s loved it so much he took us twice. He loved how gorgeous it was and how there was finally a kids movie about dads. Maybe why it made so much money? Adults loved it as much as kids

This brought back the joy and excitement with every plot turn the first time I watched it. It was a magical experience getting to see it for the first time again through your eyes.
Loving so much incorporating parenting and the impact realisations due to stories can make on parenting styles and awareness.
Any family is better with this kind of learning from stories and self awareness. Oooh Meet the Robinsons is a great one for family and self acceptance.

We just saw a film of these fish travelling from the Great Barrier Reef to Sydney, 1766km away. And back again! That's a lot of exercise for such tiny fish!
"I don't have any fish, I do have a cat. Does she wanna go outside? I dont think so, she's an indoor cat, its safer inside." Lol for some reason that made me laugh.
In the opening scene in Moana; you can spot Crush (Dude) and Squirt during the Ocean opening the way for her to find shells.....
On a completely different note: The Little Mermaid peaked my curiosity about life under the sea, but after seeing this movie in Spring 2003, I actually went to Maui, Hawaii and did my first Discover SCUBA diving class! I hope to one day go to to Australia and dive the Great Barrier Reef, where Finding Nemo takes place!!

Australia here 👋 if you’re gonna fly from America, try to break up the trip with a stop in Hawaii, and if at all possible, splurge for first class. It can be an 18hr flight from the US to the east coast of Australia and it is HELL.

Sydney, Australia - Born and Raised. This is one of Pixars best films. So fun and emotional. Always makes me cry. A true classic.Yeah Australia is a beautiful country. Not as dangerous as foreigners believe though. I recommend visiting Sydney Harbour, the Great Barrier Reef and Uluru as well as a bunch of our beaches.

Greetings from Melbourne, Australia, the most livable city in the world. Yes, that beautiful white curved building is the Sydney Opera House; it's actually an art centre with an Opera theatre, a Concert Hall, 3 theatres, restaurants, bars and more.
It's tough to want to do everything to protect your kids and have to stay yourself so you don't coddle them. My middle son is on the spectrum and he struggles so much with everyday things that other kids can do without even thinking. I still remember one time he was climbing a piece of playground equipment instead of just walking up the stairs and my initial instinct was to rush over, take him down, and point him to the stairs. But I forced myself to keep watching. He struggled to pull himself up the ladder since his motor skills were still underdeveloped but he finally made it over the top. And when he did, he gave me the biggest grin. He never would have developed his motor skills if I'd given up and done everything for him so he wouldn't have to struggle.
We've had many struggles since then. Speech therapy and learning to hold a spoon properly and learning to add and learning to read. But I can't give up. I know what he's capable of. And despite the pain of watching him put so much effort into something that for most might be so simple... I know he'll come out stronger on the other side because of it. And I just have to let him work his way through.

This is honestly one of my favorite Western animated movies. And I love to mess with people by not naming it, just describing it like a Liam Neeson movie. Then tell them the name.
William Defoe playing the most stereotypically William Dafoe character in a kids movie is amazing. And I know these turtles.

I'm so excited, I love this movie. I don't usually suggest movies because I don't want to overload anyone but Brother Bear is a great movie if you haven't seen it. I'm probably not the first one to suggest it.
I went to see this in theaters 5 times! It was that good, so many memorable scenes, one after another.
Another great movie about self discovery is Happy Feet, it has a great message and the soundtrack is amazing!
As a whale lover, the blowhole thing always got me xD Whales don't swallow water and exhale it. When they eat, they push the water back out of their mouths, and the spiky baleen traps krill, which they swallow. The moisture that comes out of the blowhole is just whatever airborne moisture was in the air/their lungs (we do the same).
I had to throw whale facts out there. I couldn't help it.
a cool thing to think about, the jelly fish dont talk in this movie different from all other creatures because tecnically speaking jelly fish dont have brains. They are literally just a clump of cells floating around in the ocean surviving. There is no instinct, its just a completely blank creature floating around

I was born when this came out and my parents used to say I couldn’t fall asleep unless this movie was playing in the background ❤️

I loved this whole reaction and it was great fun to watch with you. But I had to laugh at you wiggling your head to swim along with the fish when they were trying to swim downwards. It was endearing lol!
