I have to admit that I really enjoy the new Airfix stuff and this kit was no exception. Airfix has come a very long ways indeed and is now making some of the best kits out there
I've actually got this kit in my stash and whilst doing the research about the quality of this kit, I never found anyone that said anything truly bad about it. One of the reasons I enjoy watching your vids is because you take the time to post build pictures and we can see the work that you've done which I find easier to follow sometimes than someone doing a "moving" build, so to speak. Your commentary as always is concise but informative and very enjoyable to listen to. Keep on doing what you're doing Jon!👍👍
Hey Jon, I've got the 1/48 Revel kit in the que to built, and I'm currently working on the Airfix 1/72 kit. Surprisingly the 1/72 kit is nicely detailed and parts are fitting well. The P40 has such an unusual fuselage the nose has some odd parts and landing gear are an odd fit. While I'm familiar with the history of the P40, even met Tex Hill years ago, I've never understood the canopy configuration on the sides. The 1/48, does have some nice cockpit detail and the 1/72 is pretty good too.. makes for a nice open canopy build.. Always enjoy Saturday's video, learn something new each one.. Cheers Bob.
@@c123bthunderpig Right on, Bob! I need to post a video of my Monogram P-40 build. It was one of my early, hand-painted builds. It would also be fun to try to build the Monogram P-40 today to see if I could turn it out nicely. Cheers!
I have this KIT also !!!!!!! Good morning from OHIO I’ve been really enjoying AIRFIX KITS LATELY… They have stepped up their tooling / molds…. GOOD History on WELSH and TAYLOR at PEARL HARBOR… there’s more to the story….. YES, I think it’s a NICE KIT… And JONS MODEL KIT REVIEW always does a great REVIEW I’M going to work on my builds today… ITS SATURDAY, WHAT ELSE IS THERE… Nice job, JON, model on ……….. CHRIS 🇺🇸
Very nice review Jon. I’ve no P-40 in my stash as I couldn’t find one that I liked but after your review I shall look out for this! I built the Airfix Hurricane MK1 not long ago and is a similar build and went together without much compliant. I was rather surprised by the fit and detail and this kit looks like one too. Thanks and ride and model on.
Thank you! I have the Airfix Hurricane in-process currently. The P-40 has smoother surface texture, and much better clear parts (the worst aspect of the Hurricane kit, in my boxing). The Hurricane may have the edge in small details. Cheers!
I really enjoyed my build of this kit, the wing fillet felt like a tamiya fit. I also cut my own numbers to make Taylors aircraft for something slightly different and to avoid the inaccurate AVG markings.
Another ringing endorsement for this model. A friend has built two copies of this kit and recommends it highly. BTW, I like your choice of brands of the Japanese aircraft. I have the Fujimi 'Val' and currently working on the Nichimo 'Kate'
This is an excellent kit; clearly the best in 1/48 scale. Although, IMO, the 1964 Monogram P-40 is 2nd best due to its accuracy of outline, it clearly suffers in lack of detail viz. the Airfix kit, requiring considerable effort to bring it up to today's standards. Incidentally, R.T.Smith's P-40 dates to 1941; by 1943 the AVG was long gone, having been absorbed into the USAAF.
Hi Joh. Thanks for the review. Much liked kit by all. Well done Airfix. I do like that the usually give you the "wheels up" option in their kits. I got some replacement Eagle Cal AVG decals. (slight oops by Airfix). Airfix's decision to use Cartograf decals was very wise. Look forward to seeing the finished Pearl Harbour version. Cheers Matt 🦘
This is a very great kit maybe one of Airfix best but unfortunately the Chinese Wing Insignia are wrong, it supposed to be 12 spikes and not eleven. Apart from that it's still a very great kit.
The modern Airfix kits are very competitive. Unfortunately, even after more than a decade in the market, they still seem to lack due recognition. 'Hello', there is a wonderful world beyond Tamiya. In February, my model club is holding an 'in-house' contest that will feature only Airfix builds, and I'm looking forward to it. The cockpit detail in this kit is impressive. As to the upper nose requiring a bit of work, it doesn't look like a huge deal to fix. Just my opinion, but some builders these days seem to want every part to fit perfectly without the need for adjustments through the use of a knife, a file, or some filler. C'mon guys, if that's your approach you're going to be eliminating a lot of great finished models from your display case. Just my take.
I used the kit-supplied decals for the Val. They were pretty terrible. I cover this in the review of the Val: ua-cam.com/video/VU7o2__CFVg/v-deo.htmlsi=JqriTtbDL9LYGDyS
I have this kit and had to quit it. Trying to align everything around the nose was way too frustrating. It really felt like Airfix was trying to be more fancy than they had any business attempting.

Thanks, Chris! I love researching the history as I go through the builds. It makes the builds much more relevant. Cheers!
Nice review John! I built their 1/72 P-40 kit and it was awesome. I think I need to get this one now.
