It is really a very good, short video about saving changes done to files in Lightroom. Thank you Julieanne for creating it. It is very helpful.

Granted this is older, but the XMP Files option is the lesser known "secret" to an extra backup of your edits. The only caveat is that if you want it to automatically update the XMP files when you make edits is that (from what I've found) you have to enable this before you start filling your catalog. Otherwise it seems not to do this automatically and you have to manually save them. Of course selecting all files and pressing Ctrl/Option+S will do the same thing, but the XMP files are a big help. They do slow down LR a little but I think the benefit of a second "backup" of your edits for each image is beneficial and worth the performance hit.

In your catalog setting there is an option to automatically write changes to xmp files, which can be enabled at anytime, independant of the number of photos in your catalog. I hope this helps.

I am sorry, I now see how unhelpful my response was. I found this to be fixed and since then the option now only syncs edits after you return to loupe view, instead of directly writing individual changes as they are made. this helps performance. I dont know what I meant to say with my previous comment sorry

Thank you. I didn't find the XMP-Files (Sidecar Files) and was confused...
    That helped me a lot.

Thank you for that. This has bothered me for some time and all is now clear. I'm sure it's obvious to some, but clearly those us us who aren't pros didn't understand. Thanks.

Thank you, Julieanne. A question: is this the same as right click on photo > Create Virtual Copy?

Saving the metadata is only secondary to me. What I want first of all is to save all the adjustments I made to the exposure, so that all the changes are there, when I open the images in non-Adobe software. When I have done my work in Lightroom, I really have no reason for keeping the original poorly exposed photos - I want to save all my changes into the files.

Exactly my feeling. And I don't want to have to Export the image and then use the file system to copy back over the original. That's a ridiculous process. And I don't want to have to buy or learn Photoshop, since the edits in Lightroom are all I need. When I click Save I want the original file to be replaced, so that when I email the file the person will see a better image. Or better yet, when I copy all 7k pictures to my memory stick I get the latest version of every file.

    Hi Julieanne,
Is there any way to migrate NEF images that I have retouched in Photos to my Desktop and maintain them as Nikon Electronic Format (NEF Raw) images?

Hi, I am a bit confused - i.e, I have one file (.CR2), then I made changes in Development, and then I pressed Ctl+S, what I see in File-Manager is the CR2 and the XMP; my confusion is, where are my changes? are they merged in the CR2 file as one expects, or are they still in XMP (a copy of LR DB)?
I think it's the latter because in your description enabling the automated process, it said that it will store the changes in an XMP file. so in reality, one must copy both files to keep changes, otherwise one must Save As JPEG, back where we started... food for thoughts...!

What is more typical for me is to edit a raw file in LR, then make adjustments in Photoshop. So it becomes a tiff file. When I do a simple save in PS I notice the tiff file is on the same folder with the rest of the raw files from an assignment. I have never understood if I have to manually make copies of the tiff file or LR is saving the tiff file when I close the program and it backs up the catalog.

So when you save the changes to XMP will Capture One or other raw developers be able to read the XMP and changes made in LR?

Thanks for this, after watching your tutorial, the penny finally dropped.
I just could not work out why, when exported, the image still looked the same
with no edited changes. Interestingly, this way of editing makes it necessary
for the recipient to have access to a "Lightroom" like software to view them.
    Smart move Adobe :)
Canon's FREE, D.P.P. program opens them and applies the XMP data to the image.
Once we get our heads around the methodology, employed by Adobe were good.

Why no recent Lightroom CC Classic tutorials? Should we be worried that it’s not going to stay with us in the future?

You are an excellent teacher but did not answer what seems like an obvious question... what if you want two versions of the same image? What if you make changes so the image is exactly the way you want it, and save the metadata, but now you need to bump up the brightness and sharpness so you can send the image off to the printer for a perfect print? Can you have two .xmp files for one image?

You could create a virtual copy (or several) and apply the differences to that/those?
      Ctrl+' is the shortcut.

I have to say Lightroom is completely unintuitive to me! I have tried it many times but it is just too clunky for me. Don't get me wrong, I am an Engineer for 42 years and have written many training manuals but Adobe Bridge and Photoshop is so much easier to understand. Perhaps you have to have a Lightroom brain type?🤔😂
