    Kenshi is chill but hardcore at the same time. Like Dwarf Fortress with graphics.

      You should check out Odd Realm on steam. Its 10 bucks atm I think and it uses the z level for height. Its pretty good for early access

    I wouldn't recommend those spots. There is just one big disadvantage -> limmited space! A base will just run much smoother, if you have enough room for farming and crafting industry with a special defence system. With those bases on plateaus you won't have enough room to set up enough farms to feed all your ppl if you once reach a size of +20-30 characters. Despite all (99%) enemies attack the gates and not the walls you can easily build a "killing box" where 18 harpunes point straight in front of the gate (looks like an octagon with one opening on the opposite side of the gate - sorry can't explain it better). I also don't recommend building crafting and research stations outside. The efficiency will lower on certain weather effects like rain. Inside a house with a light source you have always 100% efficiency. If you start a whole new base you first should set up the iron raffinery to make iron plates for the stone processor. The minimum to build a base are 6 iron plates and 3 building mats (plus 10 farming mats like greenfruit). I also don't recommned making energy with (bio)fuel. You lose resources for crafting food and you lose 1 worker. With wind energy in use you can give this worker other tasks. There are also small windgenerators who always produce +25 energy per unit in Tec Tier 2. For food you first should go for greenfruits to make a vegetable soup with 25 nutrition. After that you should get bread baking started. With 8 Greenfruit and 1 bread you can craft a food cube that provides 75 nutrition and a quite amazing selling value of about c950/unit and it needs only 6 slots in your inventory. You can increase the time an enemy breaks your gate if you send up to 1-4 good engis to repair the door while the other ppl attack with harpunes and crossbows. And last but not least you should set up your buildings smart. place storages next to the producing building (iron node, stone node, iron raffinery, stone processor, farms, weaponstation and so on). That will reduce the idle time where your workers carry ressources from point a to point b to point c. And optimize the job queue for all your workers. No one should just stand around and do nothing.

      These are the kind of tips I came to find. Great post!

    • @Indyday
      @Indyday 5 років тому +5

      @@BinaryDigit09 The Valley south of Blister Hill is quite greate for setting up a first base. Huge flat areas with max water, fertility, stone and iron. You just have to find a spot with at least a small copper node nearby. This location has more advantages on top. The holy nation has many patrols in this are who help to fight bandits, ninjas and raptors. But be aware that you don't have other characters like humans in your group as long as you stay in HN teretory. You are close to holy farms where you can buy bulls for larger haulage and you have two big cities where you can sell your produced cloth, weapons, food and raw material to get cats very quickly. And not to forget it's quite centered of the map so you can reach all locations you want to travel in a few in-game days. There is a bug in the current version I noticed. If you build walls in a 90 degree angle many enemies will walk through the corner like the wall doesn't exist. So they can attack your turret users from behind. If this bug happens with a HN patrol and your gate is closed these monks and paladins start to attack your door from the inside (thes commit a crime and you can kill and loot them if you want without restrictions :D). Another thing I noticed... if you build a food storage outside, your animals will eat there and you don't have to build a seperate feed trough. If you place this behind your door your animals will stay there automatically. If enemies come break the door they are just there to attack them in seconds.

    another option and this is useful if your nearby places you can trade well with is to hire mercenaries to defend your outpost. if you go find tech mercs they will match even the Holy Nation. and generally the money you will make from selling the loot will make up for the cost of the mercs. i generally when a raid is about to happen send my fastest guy to go hire some and bring them back with 1-2 gates u can hold them off long enough for your new frontline to return.
    if your really self sustaining and are able to trade well as trade caravans pass through your town you can afford to hire the mercs as town guards permanently its somewhat costly but you then know you have some of the strongest NPC's there to be your frontline(only need then like 2-3 men on xbows) and you can then leave to have everyone else doing their jobs fine

      I know it's simple, but I make wakizashis for income. I'm only at Mk1, only have one weapons smith, and could already sustain a few bands of mercs permanently.
      -4 materials cost, so your smith never runs dry and stops smithin'.
      -2k cats per blade and only 6(?)hr production time
      -tiny blades with decent value means a large backpack can hold 40-50k cats in merch, and a beast can hold another ~80-90k.
      My biggest challenge overall is that I'm making more value in swords than the nearest town can afford to pay for each day, so if I miss a day selling then I'll never get rid of my overstock without going to the scraphouse and taking their money plus a couple edge-tier weapons.
      That, and I can't actually figure out how to permanently hire mercs without a new trip to their boss every few days.

    A nice, organic way to make a base.
    Another I'd consider and what some real life cities were made from is important trading routes, start off staying a little on the side of a trading route after making stock of sellable goods (so you have a big warehouse, a workshop and homestead), set up shop outside the walls and as business expands start building for greater industrial capacity, get hydroponics instead of an undefended patch of grass outside and inhlobate more of your sorroundings with layers of walls even coming to entirely wall off the road.
    It's going to be hard initially to defend your location but this is as close to starting out after clearing level II research as much as possible before even putting a single stormhouse in, and the trading focus will let you have both the occasion to see mercenaries and have the funds to hire even multiples of.

    So you say you need minimum 10 to defend a very defensible base against all assaults. How will you feed all those ppl if you are temporarily camping in a town while you research your techs to know how to build the home base? Food is the scarcest resource in the game. I can barely keep 1 member fed from the scraps for sale in bars and shops. Hunting animals? Scavenging hive battles with beakthings? Farming isn't an option without a base to protect it. Seems like a catch22.

    Base building in Kenshi is an option, a choice, but it isn't necessary in any way. You dismiss buildings in towns as limiting, but they aren't limiting in any way. Try to explain how they are limiting. Base building is limiting in that it takes lots of time and effort to accomplish what you could have done much quicker and easier in other ways. Base building also requires that you must handle the battles that the game decides to throw at you rather than you picking the battles you want to fight. The bottom line is that in Kenshi there is absolutely no reason or advantage to building a base. None at all. Try to name one if you can. Base building is simply an option in the game, and if you like that option then by all means build a base. But you don't need a base at all.

    • @tblock8927
      @tblock8927 5 років тому +6

      Jim Johnson many houses and buildings in town are too small for the various production buildings you need. While building an actual outpost is laborous, it has a lot more freedom when it comes to production. That said building in a city allows you to just buy all your needed materials from nearby shops.

    • @jimjohnson3432
      @jimjohnson3432 5 років тому

      @@tblock8927 The only production buildings you really need are a research bench, and armor crafting bench and a weapons bench which all will fit in a stormhouse or any larger building. If you want more production buildings then you need more than a stormhouse, but other than a plate armor bench what else would you really need? So virtually any town has all the space you need.

    • @Marcus_Wulfhart
      @Marcus_Wulfhart 5 років тому +7

      Jim Johnson lol Jim, are you insane. Building in town is INSANELY limiting. You can’t build your own buildings, can’t build mines or farms or power generation or custom Dojo’s or a million other things. If you want to produce materials, you need a custom base. Nothing wrong with living in a city, but saying a base is totally unnecessary is whacky...

    • @jimjohnson3432
      @jimjohnson3432 5 років тому

      @@Marcus_Wulfhart You don't need to build your own buildings, you don't need to build farms or mines, you rarely would need to generate power in town but you can if you want to, and you can build dojo's. Why do you want to produce materials? For what purpose? Oh, right, so you can build a base. I understand that many like base building and that is fine, but base building is encrusted in the mind of most players for no reason. I'm just pointing out that there is no reason for a base, unless you just want one. In my original post I challenged anyone to name an advantage to building a base, you tried, but you failed. On day 42 of my current run, a no thievery random wanderer start, 19 characters all have specialist or mastercraft armor we have made in all of there slots, we have 2 meitou weapons, 3 edge 3's, the rest are edge 2's we have made, and 2 mastercraft eagle cross. Have taken down dust king tower, the BD ninjas tower, sand ninja tower, band of bones, kralls chosen, got got the UC emperors meitou katana and probably some other things I can't think of right now, have tech level 6 and we have 700k in cats, and all I have is an L House at the hub. Now I need a base for what exactly? Think about it.

    • @blshouse
      @blshouse 5 років тому +7

      "You dismiss buildings in towns as limiting... Try to explain how they are limiting."
      Simple, there are production equipment that cannot be built inside building, and towns will not allow you to build outside of any buildings you have not purchased.
      "...in Kenshi there is absolutely no reason or advantage to building a base. … Try to name one if you can."
      You are free to build any and everything you like, where you want it to be. If you want the most efficient production chains, this can be accomplished most easily in your own base. You cannot even turn wheatstraw into flour inside a city, because the production device cannot be built in town. Likewise stone, ore, or copper refining.
      Base building is far from necessary, but it is a valid and even challenging playstyle.
