  • I forgot to mention it, but 'Great King' is actually the translation of the title that the Hittite rulers bore, not some kind of description. It is the northern equivalent of "Pharaoh" in many ways, though of course there is a lot of unique cultural baggage wrapped up in each.
Only Kurunta is left among the announced leaders so far. Leave a comment to tell me what you think about the Hittites, how they compare to the Egyptians, and what other groups should be added in to Total War: Pharaoh.

So the Hittites start out like the Western Roman Empire in Atilla. I look forward to playing as them.

I wasn't interested in playing Suppiluliuma II in Pharaoh, as I'm not too familiar with Hittite history, but this video and the previous ones you made have made me really want to play a campaign with him.

The video landed in my lunch break in the UK - perfect timing! Love the work, and currently you're singlehandedly keeping me interested in TW: Pharoah.

How you've done so many shows lately while having a day job and a family is beyond me? Im not complaining 😊 the hati should have kept that secondary capital in the south and abandoned hattusa in the wastland north. With fortifications and an army maybe they could have held out? Or not.

I have no idea how I have managed it either. Been crazy busy lol, but wanted to get this story put together while it was timely. But yeah, a Hittite empire that had given up on Hattusa in favor of Syria would probably have survived longer. The big holdup would have been the northern temples and shrines, but I can imagine a world where Puduhepa's religious reforms had been given time to take root and develop into a less geographical faith to handle the northern losses. A surviving hittite empire is an incredible and deeply underexplored alternate history.

I figure his difficulty will be very hard. Bay's in a leak is Hard and will start around Byblos btw. Irsu as I can tell will be in Modern Day Syria. I really thought he would be a lot closer to Egypt.

Watching this video and others on this channel regarding the Hittites, I think the fall of the Hittite empire has a lot of the same dynamics as the fall of the Roman empire. Both had been in dire situations before, where it could've all ended sooner, but both made miraculous recoveries with exceptional leaders at the helm such as Suppiluliuma I and Aurelian. However, when both empires eventually fell for good, there were too many challenges to recover from again. Both empires at the end of their existence experienced climate instability which damaged their capability to provide for themselves, resulting in famines and therefore manpower shortages, and also helped to cause population movements of various peoples who would be hostile to both states. Then there is the massive issue of imperial authority and prestige, or lack of, which became so bad at the end that vassals and governors would blatantly disobey royal decrees and eventually left the empire to die. I suppose Suppiluliuma II could compare to Majorian, the last emperor who truly had a chance to restore the empire and worked ceaselessly to that goal in spite of all the challenges. Perhaps like Majorian, Suppiluliuma II was also betrayed by a close confidante during the violent downfall of the empire even as he tried to save it.
