My Life in Gaming makes documentaries, deep dives into retro console hardware, and more.
You should do home design for gamers. I think theres a huge market for that
agreed, i'm dealing with 25 years of personal collecting and I still don't have everything out. Also never knew that about the lithium energizer batteries and their no leak guarantee, thanks for the tip!
That's cool idea, but with all the different building codes from county to county with my state of South Carolina alone for example it would be a lot of hassle for sure, as for example in my county we have very sandy soil so we can't build homes with basements for fear of the home could sink(I'm not joking or exaggerating as I'm looking at Jam Jacks for my home since it's starting to settle, and sink slightly), and to build a 2nd story home requires extra permanents, and regulations, so at least in my small town, most of the homes are single story homes. So yeah cool idea in theory, but not practical on a mass scale for anything more then a manufactured home(mobile home/trailer), and even those have some strict regulations in some states like the midwest due to tornadoes, etc.. which can add a lot of cost.
I think you are mistaking what home design means.
@@CommodoreFan64 I think he just meant that Try, the host, can really put a room together. Not suggesting he design and build a whole gamer's house from the foundation up.
Yessss
I love how high quality your videos are
sFX is sooo satisfying on this...
Yesss!
Anyone else get all giddy with excitement when MLIG posts a new video?
Yes. It is like nostalgia is a drug and youtube is a peddler who only gets small quantities of the pure stuff every so often but when he does, you're the first one he offers it to, and it comes nicely packaged in a MLiG video.
I absolutely love how you always implement those supercute little sound effects when plugging anything on or off
Only 11 minutes long? I need more
The little sound effects when clicking things together is so nice!
Why would anyone dislike this at all is beyond my comprehension. This is a masterpiece! 👏
Great video, Try. This has always been something I've looked into as well. I'm glad you addressed the wobbly nature of the RCG stands because while I love them in concept, they're actually a little unreliable and fall apart often without some extra glue as you said.
Now I want a Famicom GBA Micro and I blame you for that.
The content on this channel is unrivaled even after all the years
This guy will never get bored in quarantine
Ok so my set up is controllers lying on or near the consoles, possibly on the floor some of which have gained a nice protective layer of dust. Cheap and easy to set up.
May have to rethink this method of storage and display...
General Light I really should. One day I'll sort out some proper storage for stuff. Get some nice stacking crates for consoles to go in and whatnot.
I’ve heard for the nyko charge block, it largely depends on what kind of USB you plug it in. If it’s just two blocks or less, then you can use any wall USB, but if you add on more then you need to plug it into a 3.0 port for reliable charging. I got one for my PS4 based on this video & it’s awesome
That magnetic cable thing is SUCH a good idea! I think I want to do something like that now.
Man I love this stuff! Amazing work guys
Any possible tips for cable management for when you have all your systems hooked up but don't want clusters of visable wires?
[Try4ce] I actually hang a black cloth on the backside of my console furniture so that I can't see the cables. I manage them somewhat with velcro ties, but it's still not pretty, without blocking them from view.
Thanks Try! I appriciate it
Guess Its time to go find some fabric
Be careful not to overheat the power supplies they could heat up and then release the Magic Smoke
Oh man, just when I decide to live on a budget, you come up with an episode on charging docks...
Fine...*opens wallet*
I know right!
I'm a minimalist and since I'm a GAMER I just carry my Sudoku book (a nice portable!)
dr41k same here dude
I’d love to see a wire management video. That’s the part I struggle with and why I don’t keep all my stuff hooked up at once, because of the rat nest it inevitably turns into.
I think I have a solution for the 8bitdo controllers. Use a phone charging station for 6 phones. They will hold 3 controller and have 6 ports for cables. The controllers stand on a nice a angle. Though make sure that the cables you're using is around 30cm. 20 cm is just too short to reach the ports. In theory 30cm should work, but I'm still waiting for them to come in the mail
For wii motes, use a cheap wii charging dock as a stand. The batteries are terrible, but the do work really well as a stand. They only cost $10 so it's fine. Also bonus, you get spare ac adapters
You mentioned it only briefly, but having your gaming controllers in plastic bags in a bin really makes it easy to dig through them
[Try4ce] It really does. Funny enough, the idea came from my mom while she was helping we with some spring cleaning one year. It seemed like such an obvious (and cheap!) idea that I couldn't believe I hadn't thought of it before. Life-changing!
Ugh you guys make me spend so much money on awesome stuff like this! Yesterday I was like "meh my handhelds are fine in a cabinet" but now I'm like "HOLY CRAP I'M BUYING ONE OF THOSE DISPLAY THINGS FOR EVERY SINGLE ONE"
I would watch this video repeatedly just for Nathan's Theme. One of the best in all of gaming.
I love all the sounds effects thank you for the extra effort lol
the theme music for this channel is like the best youtube channel theme music ever, even better than game sack!
Your videos are always so interesting and well put together! I absolutely loved all the different video game sound fx you used in this video; added a really nice charm to it 🕹️
I wish I could hang out with Try
Oh man, I was just looking into this and settled for controllers on a table connected to a 10 port charging hub. I needed this episode last week!
Damn, Try. That's one of the biggest Xbox One collections I've ever seen.
I swear any video MLIG puts out is gold, and those NYKO Charger blocks look dope af, I'm definitely copping some for my setup.
This video sold me a set of Rose Colored stands for the four handhelds I can't get (or don't want) a charge dock for, and they're pretty swank. They help save shelf space, too, since the systems are standing up instead of laying out. I love 'em, good call!
I have just recently redone my controller storage. I got a sturdy poster frame with perspex front (and a tetris poster) then bought the controller hangers (ebay). Drilled through the perspex, poster and backing board of the poster frame then attached the hangers with a short bolt and washer from the back and hex dome nut on the front. I have 16 controllers (wired) hung on the poster on the wall ready to go at any time. Getting some velcro for the wires has kept everything quite neat
Lithium ion batteries do diminish if they are charged continuously without being used. Overstimulating those crystals can affect its overall performance.
Those energizer battery rechargeable's, our use those all the time. Those have saved me well over $1000 on batteries over the Wii lifespan. But they have to be used because if you don't use them, they won't last very long as long. I know this for a fact.
The energizer rechargeable batteries lasted for years before I had to get replacements. Like all rechargeable batteries, each charge does diminish it's overall life span but also not using the battery will kill it off faster. I bought some pacifically for my Wii fit board and because I didn't really use those batteries, they didn't last very long but the ones in my Wii remote did.
One trying to say is that I did a lot of research and I have a lot of personal experience with batteries because they were my source of interacting with my electronics.
Marking the batteries as a couple does help and not mix and match in them helped a lot.
Seeing stuff like this makes me so sad that almost my entire retro collection is currently packed away. It makes me REALLY want to play some of these old classics. I made myself a custom PC inside an NES (don't worry, found and imported one that was broken beyond reasonable repair, and that, on top of that was very yellowed and had a cracked casing, didn't want to sacrifice a good working one), so i can emulate pretty much my entire collection on that one system, with a variety of bluetooth and usb controllers, while everything is in boxes, and while that solution will have to do for now, and it does work fairly well, i really do miss having everything out and on display. :)
Anyway, great video, gave me lots of inspiration. Up till now i've just plugged in a cable for charging, but i can see that a solution like this, is much more practical.
Just went and bought a Nyko Charge Block for a Switch Pro and Joycon. That is an awesome idea, and I’m amazed no one thought of it before! On PS3 I use the official Sony dock, but that looks like it’s ballooned in price over the years.
I'm very impressed with the lack of dust
I really like your handhelds setup :) But what about dust? I know your mindset is to have everything ready to play... but have you considered custom acrylic boxes to place over your displays? It would be easy enough to lift up the box, grab what you want, and then place it back over. Just thinking out loud here :)
Just made my first order for RCG and I'm so excited to bring some order to the chaos that is my handheld collection
I used a desk organizer with vertical slots for file folders for some of my portables. PSP, DS and 3DS fit in it ok, and I used some paperclips (the big ones you squeeze open) to fix the charge cables to each bay so they don't fall behind. Memory cards go in the post it note slot. It's sloppy but it works!
Love the way you've got everything setup man. Looks really great.
for displaying my handhelds i just made a stand from old lego call me cheap but it works
I have found my new favorite retro channel
I found a couple Castlevania fan games I thought were good that came out just last year. Try:
- Castlevania: The Lecarde Chronicles 2
- Castlevania: The Seal Of The Curse
A Castlevania fan games episode would be cool for October! Thanks again guys!
I'm glad I'm not the only one who likes to use the Wii U Pro Controller for playing on the PC. I actually use it for my Raspberry Pi the most. It's honestly a good controller that gets more crap then it deserves.
I just mounted a plank of wood to the wall with a smaller plank on the front to prevent my handhelds from sliding off. Simple cheap, and effective.
I’ve used a number of ideas setting up my new apartment!
Was inspired by the video and ordered a nyko charging kit for my ps3 and Xbox one. Thanks for the great video. I believe this is a first on UA-cam dedicated to just docking station for various consoles.
Thank you for introducing me to those Nyko Charge blocks they seem to be around what I've been looking for.
Thanks, gave me a few ideas. I’ve been rebuying retro systems for the past year that I had when I was younger. Wired controllers can become a mess if not stored properly. Also I’d like to say “SEGA!”
I'm so glad you covered the Rapid Charging Set for the Wii Remote. Great video, as always.
I gotta take time and set everything I won up for easy use, takes up to more than 30 minutes sometimes to set up and get a older system going. And that most definitely is a deterrent. This gave me some good ideas though, cheers!
I use to do this, but dust was a real pain. I keep them in ikea drawers now, but they’re still in their own dock and ready to go. It also looks neater since the cabling is completely hidden.
8bitdo is missing out on making docks, they have such a diverse and large amount of controllers.
That Nyko modular charging station looks great. I might have to check that out for my XBOne and Switch Pro controllers.
I have the official ps3 controller charging dock from sony. I'm quite glad I got it when it was available.
learning easy for gaming is best , best i wacht anything about gaming
Can you do one for power distribution? And cable management I am alwais interested on those topics. Thank you!
I have this awesome PS3 dock that was made by Sony themselves. I hate the feeling of even plugging in something to charge, always love the satisfaction fo a slight click when setting something in a pronged dock. The magnetic cables look amazing, I should get some
Love the diesel cold start for the psp 7:16
I have tons of Eneloops, and some magnetic charge cables, but I might have to get some of those Energizer lithium batteries. I definitely like that "no leak guarantee"
Bwahahahahahaha! The starter sound for the PSP, yes.
On a side note, the Wiimote displays have been tweaked so that the little supports grab on to more surfaces, so they stay in place better.
The controller displays are all getting a massive overhaul right now. They will all have a brace and the braces now lock in place using what I hope isn’t an excessively complex method (we’re pretty happy with how sturdy they all are now. It’s like night & day).
***caution ⚠ do not store Wii remotes with the battery's plugged in *** the remotes constantly drain power even when powered off which will leave rechargeable battery's in a non rechargeable state and will slowly drain non rechargeable batteries.
When temporarily storing my Wii remotes, I always put a small tab of paper to keep the batteries from touching the contacts, and not draining the batteries.
I was going to mention that fact, and I use the energizer battery packs with my wiimotes charge them up on the docks when I'm finished using them, and then take the batteries out, and set them to the side with my Wiimotes, and I make sure anyone else in my family who uses our Wii does the exact same thing. Also any other device I'm going to be storing for a while, and has a battery that's easy to take out, I make sure to take out it or them out before storing them.
Also remember, Alkaline batteries can leak acid even when not making contact with anything.
I made the mistake of taking them out of my Wii remotes and having them in the same Ziplock baggy as the Wii remotes, for the sake off convenience, and after only a year, there was dried up battery acid all over everything.
Yep this is true!
Commodorefan64 i had those Energizer packs a long time ago and those suckers are way past dead.
I've had the same pair of AA lithium batteries in my Wavebird for at least the past 7 years... and that was after they were too weak to power my digital camera. I play infrequently, but it's lasted at least a couple hundred hours during that time.
Great episode. I mainly watch room tours to see setups like this. Thanks for the ideas and help.
about your remark at the 2 minute mark about batteries, nimh batteries can and do leak if they fail. best to store them outside of devices you don't use regularly, or better yet keep them in a charger that can maintain a charge via trickle charging.
I've been gaming since 1977 and still own my childhood consoles in there boxes in great shape especially Nintendo and NEO-GEO AES console and games from 1985-2020 are any of these consoles and games from your childhood from your collection.
Incredible setup and system! Everything looks so tidy and inviting for gaming. Nice MO Game Con shirt, BTW!
I was in a similar predicament when my kids were collecting Thomas Trackmaster trains. The kids would tend to forget to turn them off draining the batteries almost every day. Add to the fact that we have an extensive collection of engines, I simply couldn’t justify the cost of non-rechargeable batteries which could potentially leak. I found out that the generic “purple” colored NiMH batteries from EBay/China suited my needs perfectly! They don’t leak, they hold a charge fairly long (even in storage) and they are comparable in price to regular Alkaline batteries. They work great for Thomas trains but not so good for items that have a high discharge. Those lithium batteries are better quality but when you literally need over 100 batteries, the cost is unjustifiable for something non reusable. I usually keep a few batteries charged up and just swap them out as needed.
I use a Razer Charging Stand for my Xbox Series S controller. Looks nice and can charge it under 3 hours. Definitely want to get a charging stand for my PS4 controllers.
Another fantastic episode.
Any news on when the 4K TV episode will come out?
[Try4ce] Not sure, but I would still like to get it done in the coming months. I'm going to work on a few shorter things in the meantime, because we may be doing some travel soon (for episodes), which means we'll need things to release in the meantime.
Found a way to charge the 8bitdo controllers. Get one of those charging stations that are meant to charge multiple phones or tablets and have the stand on an angle. I do question on what kind of person has 6 phones or tablets but they should work fine for 8bitdo controllers, since they're reletively thin
+1 on the Nyko charge block. I have two sets of 4 for PS4 and XBox One. They make it very easy to keep charged and the low angle keeps them out of the way. I just ordered a similar Nyko product for the 360, but it only holds 2 and doesn't feature the great modular setup of the newer ones.
**Caution ⚠ ** DO NOT use rubberbands to keep cords neatly wound up. They will either dry up and turn to dust, or much worse, they will liquefy, and turn into an oily epoxy like substance and bond with the rubber on the cords!
I've had this happen after only a few years on some old, extra controllers. Luckily they were just some broken NES pads which I had planned on fixing. Since then I've replaced all of them with Velcro fabric cable ties. Learn from my mistake!
What about twist ties?
Velcro fabric cable ties work very well , and you' don't have to set then aside. They are attached to the cable , so comfy.
the car startup sound you put over the PSP killed me
For those bright leds on the modular docks I would try taking a black marker and putting a light coat over the strip. Might dampen It a little.
I used to have a madcatz charger dock for my wii which used the wiis powersupply to also charge the controller batteries
I try and keep controllers that I want to use out. It does make ot easier when you have a variety to play. Ill just leave some out in fron of the tv. That way I see them and more likely to pick them up and play.
I've had some really bad experiences with some aftermarket Wiimotes from EBGames (Gamestop). Ever since then we've always taken out the batteries when they're not being used, and since those ones are player 3 and 4, it's especially important.
Wished I knew about the Nyko Charge block sooner, would of been perfect to charge my Switch Pro/Joycons and PS4 controller. Now you can only get it from international sellers.
Really good video, got into charging docks myself during ps3 era... Keep up the good work !!
Official chargers for DS4 and DS3 are great. Also great call on magnetic cables. I use them for kids tablets, don't know why I haven't done the same for some of my controllers...
This couldn't have come at a better time! I'm currently in the process of creating a dedicated gaming space in an effort to defeat my backloggery, and you make an excellent point: when everything's good and ready to go, it's so much easier to jump into the game rather than waste time charging controllers (or finding your games if you're as disorganized as I am!)
[Try4ce] Nice Bak'laag plushie ya got there. ;)
Yeah, he's going on my console shelf too, as a constant reminder to slow down and enjoy what I have!
Seriously.... who made the intro music to your channel or what is the song called?
You can make an episode about growing plants, and that intro music always gets me hype for it. Great video. Thanks for the awesomeness !!!!
That battery tip is a life changer for me batteries leaked in my mario and Luigi wiimotes :(
Great video a d it's true when everything is setup in the right spot and easy access your more likely to use it.
Another great episode Try! I’m always bummed out when they end, they always seem too short!
this channel is seriously so good
Some other things you can do is use the non-charging Wii U dock to stand up any DS, and buy generic wall hooks to hang your Wii Wheels on the wall (If you have any - I personally have the MK8 and original Wii ones)
I love the nyko charge blocks but the charge lights suck. My solution, black electrical tape. It blends in with dock and solves the always on light issue.
Walking into my office, you'd expect that I had a ton of systems set up in their due to all the controller docks. In reality, I use multiple different controllers on my PC, and keep my second WiiU on the old DLP I use for work.
Love your guys videos so much allways gives me the spark to get up and make something out of my collection
Yeah those energizer lithium are mint. Well worth it for almost anything. And a tsk, tsk, tsk to you at 4:00 for not having a battery free mod on your rumble pak
I've always loved the sound effects for these videos but 7:16 actually made me laugh out loud. Very nice.
For what’s its worth, I’ve been using the same Xbox 360 NYKO dock and batteries for 11 years now, and they are still going strong today , they always last a full gaming session
How do you have all your consoles plugged into an outlet and your TV?? Would love to see a video about that!
Wow I was surprised at the end to see tgat you store your wired controllers exactly the same as me :)
Oh dude, Energizer Lithium batteries are incredible. They ARE very pricey but are worth it.
Excellent use of sfx.
I've gotten some great ideas from this video!
I got a few cheapy magnetic USBs for my 8Bitdos/Steam Controller, a Nyko block/Wireless Adapter for my Xbone Controller, and will consider some RoseColoredGaming stuff for my not-in-use GBA/SP/DS. No reason to keep them in shoeboxes in the closet anymore!
I've gone with the Monster Hunter XX Hunting Gear for my New 3DS XL. Hasn't arrived yet, but it has a sweet metal kickstand so it's great for showing off and should finally make Mario Kart/Smash comfortable to play for more than 10 minutes. (My tiny hands just don't like the "claw grip" when holding A+R to drift - though using Y to accelerate helps some)
I just need a way to easily connect my perma-wired controllers - Genesis (Hyperkin GN6) and USB adapters for N64/GC. Perhaps USB extension cables through the ground, toward my couch?
I have a magnetic USB in my Steam Controller, but since the magnetic cable is short and easy to fall off, I should probably put it on my Xbone controller instead - at least the official battery can charge this way. It's a shame there's no wireless rechargeable for the Steam Controller.
I recognize that shirt! Looking forward to seeing you both again this year!
love this.. those magnetic cable ports are genius!
I've actually seen them damage phones. I think it was overheating or something, or it couldn't be removed or something. Can't remember but it really put me off them
I wouldn't use them on something really expensive like a phone that you really care about and need, but for some old controllers it could be okay, making sure the voltage on the actual plug is low enough to not overcharge anything.
I was writing blue prints for an idea like this last night holy heck that's a surprise
