Greetings from your student from Nashville, Tennessee. You know the one, the one that you’ve been the therapist to? I decided to go through the rabbit hole and do the deep dive into your channel and go back to the beginning. I can see how much you have grown and progressed through your videos. Your first few were not as much as the “you“ I have grown to “known“ and adored. I can see you blossoming through this process of your channel. And it is excruciatingly lovely. I love seeing you coming to your own. And, of course, I adore your tutelage as well as your process. Peace and grace from your biggest fan in Tennessee.
Thank you so very much! 😘 You are absolutely right!! I have come into my own! I had to push past my fears of being me & it has been worth the challenge 😍 I really appreciate you taking the time to notice & watch my development & for being with me on this journey. Much love to you, 😘 cheers Froyle
If paper has turned yellow it’s a wood pulp paper that has turned yellow from the lignin in it. Just because a paper is a watercolour paper, or even acid-free, doesn’t mean it doesn’t contain lignin. Look for cotton rag paper, or rice paper, or any paper with no wood in it for longevity. Lignin in any art supply will cause it to break down, turn brittle, etc, over time. This is an aspect of conservation. I love your videos, thank you for sharing!
I have watched a ton of gelli prints videos and this is one of the best because you explained what you were doing as you proceeded...so many of the other gelli print videos are just speeded up so darn fast.. THANK YOU.
Thank you so much, I just love Gelli plate printing! I am about to release a whole art class on this technique, next week! So make sure you lookout for the free lesson! Cheers Froyle

Thank you so much for this tutorial, it's the best one I have seen, you make it easy for people who haven't even opened their gelli plate package yet. 🙋🏼♀️ I'm going to get started now, thank you for putting me at ease!
Loved this. I have a Gelli Plate that I haven't used yet and now I am inspired. I prefer a hand-made wrinkled and imperfect look over machine like precision. It shows humanity and feeling.
I'm so glad you have been inspired! Yes, pull out that Gelli plate & dust it off! haha! I love the experimentation and spontaneous results from creating art this way. It DOES matter which plate you buy. It’s best to use a name brand - Speedball, Gelli Arts, Gel Press. I know some European artists who bought cheap off brand ones to save a few $$. The plates pretty much disintegrated in about a week. Same with brayers since some work better than others. I used a Ranger brayer for a year and couldn’t work out why the paint didn’t adhere well. Signed up for one of Julie Fei-Fan Balzer’s gel print courses and took her advice about replacing it with a Speedball soft rubber brayer. Magic! My prints improved dramatically right away.
At about 7:45 into the video and further on, the more interesting paper is where she cleaned her roller on the crumpled craft paper. Beautiful technique - thank you!

Hello. Great tutorial. I really appreciate the thought that you don't have to be perfect! I was wondering what size of Gelli plate you're using in the video and what stencil. Thanks again.

I’m curious why you didn’t try to get a print off the reverse side if the stencil after removing g it from the plate (rather than wasting that beautiful paint). Also wondering if you can combine steps 1 and 2 by placing a stencil onto the background immediately rather than waiting for it to dry between steps? I know I’m impatient! I’ve been watching your tutorials and video sessions and learning so much!

You wouldn’t have so many wrinkles if you used the larger roller. It’s more compatible with your large plate and, since it’s the back of the print, it doesn’t matter if you get paint on the paper. This video proves the point that gel plate printing “ain’t rocket science.” Bang your brayer into your plate any old way (2.) Instead of trying to roll out your paint evenly or mix two colors smoothly so your prints aren’t splotchy, why not sort kinda, half-ass slap it on and call the result a “background.” Why make an effort? That would be “stressy.”
Hey Lynn, that was exactly what I was trying to achieve. I absolutely love the splotchy style, the prints look like abstract paintings. The vid is part of a much bigger collage project that I was working on and the background gelli prints worked perfectly. It's only one way to approach the gelli plate, not the only way, cheers
