    A small weight hanging from the center rod helps. Mine even has a hook for just that purpose.

    I admit they look good in your apiary but just a little curious on your choice of red for a bee hive.

      Not the greatest color to use, I agree, but it’s what I had on hand and didn’t want to waste it. There are enough other markers and colors (top and bottom) that I don’t believe it affects the bees too much.

      @altaylor293 bees can actually see red they just dont perceive in the same way we do. if anything it would appear black, assuming they simply can not detect that light frequency.

    I am enjoying my resource hives but going to do something different next time I assemble one. Instead of the 3/4" thick center divider board I'm going to use a 1/4 inch thick board. That will allow easier use of five frames. I can put five in now but it's really tight

      I completely agree! I’m only using four frames for that exact reason but it’s still tight. I’m not exactly sure what the dimension of the divider board is of this Dadant version.

    I went from 8-22 this year myself and I have 3 different bee yards and it’s HARD.

    Did you mark that queen before she got mated or was she mated and hadn’t started laying yet when you marked her?

    • @beesintheweeds
      @beesintheweeds  5 місяців тому

      100% when she was a virgin. It was very obvious and clear. Not only by her size and shape but also by her demeanor. Virgins are extremely flighty and run around on the comb like chickens with their heads cut off. LOL

      @@beesintheweeds it’s kind of surprising that she went out and got mated and made it back with that green dot on her.

    I'm.12 months into Beekeeping and have 14 colonies. I spend 3 hours a week on the hives.
    That's about as much free time as I have.
    I've had experienced beekeepers tell me I could handle a max of 50 hives.
    I can't imagine how that's possible.
    Perhaps you just focus on the essentials: are there eggs? Are there QCs? Etc.. move to the next colony.

      I ask Dave this very question as he maintains 170 by himself. 🤪🤯 I think my mac is going to be 20-30. I do know you will get more efficient as you go. I know I did.
      Bottom line, Dave spends a lot of time with his bees. Haha

      I extract twice a year here in Eastern North Carolina. This year was two weeks early, first harvest mid May, next harvest is after July 4th. If lucky, (which usually doesn't happen) may get goldenrod in October if the hurricanes stay away.
