    Excellent job on the production! I am surprised how good the video looks off of that 30 year old CCD technology . I actually used one of these back in the 80’s for a local cable access program. The weak link was the 8mm format low resolution and chroma noise.
    Many thanks for bringing back great memories!

      @@davesretrovideolab2709It still does to this day! I'm learning the ins and outs of it, and it's amazing what they managed to cram in here in the mid 80s.
      Also, quick question: how did you go about digitizing the footage you recorded while outside? I've had varying results with varying capture cards & programs, but none looked that crisp (all had janky deinterlacing/flickery luma).

    My very first camcorder! Fascinating to watch and 're-learn' what it offered. Looking at copies of those 110V videos today makes me realize it definitely was not a low light and resolution champ, compared to the Hi8 machine I eventually traded it in for (to say nothing of the 4K cameras I currently use!)

      Hey Dale,
      It's funny what we forget about these old cameras. We're so used to HD, 4K etc, we forget just how low res the images the cameras produce trulyare. That being said, with the right balance of light you can get a fairly good image. It's not easy to achieve, but fun to try. Thanks for watching! - Dave

    Dave,
    I've recently started collecting (fairly) retro cameras myself, and I recently bought this camera. It's the European model for PAL, the V100E, and I looked for some examples of the camera working. Seeing such a high quality production about something I'm quite passionate about (and I'm sure you are too) brings a smile to my face. I'm glad I discovered your channel, and I look forward to more of your camera reviews!
    If you're wondering, the other cameras in my collection are:
    - A Sony VX9000E
    - A Sony TRV340E
    - A Panasonic M7 (it's branded as a National, but it's basically the same thing)
    Compared to your collection of Newvicon, Saticon and Whatevercon cameras, these seem kinda... boring, but it's the most I can afford, haha.
    I'm fascinated by the DSR-300, and once you get it working I'd love to see a review of it!
    - Louie

      Hey Vaux',
      The 'V110/V100E is one of my favs. Maybe all my cams are my favs, lol, but the V110 certainly is near the top of the list as far as my favorite retro video camcorders are concerned. I think it has something to do with the overall look of the camera maybe?? That all being said, throw in VU meters and a pro looking mic and the Sony CCD V220 PRO is the bomb. Now if I can only find one that works. Thanks for watching! 😊

    I have (had) a video 8 af, the milky glow comes from some kind of mold that forms inside the low pass filter glass that sits on top of the ccd, I took it apart thinking I could just clean it off, but it's sandwiched in-between the layers of glass, no fixing it without new glass. I destroyed the camera in the process.

      Hey Chris, I can't even begin to tell you how many of these Sony CCD cameras I've come across with the same issue. I took a Sony BMC-550 apart to see why this was happening. ua-cam.com/video/ZXsvCvwtplE/v-deo.html. I don't think the engineers at Sony would've ever thought we would still be using these old cameras 35 years later. Thanks for watching!

    I just recently snagged a Sony CCD-V110. This is my first vintage camcorder, so I am still confused on some of the workings of the camcorder. When I look through the viewfinder the image lacks color and is very white and bright, is this normal? Or is this the condition you were talking about at 5:11?

    • @davesretrovideolab2709
      @davesretrovideolab2709  3 роки тому

      Hey Jonathan, I would like to thank you for checking out my video. With the older camcorders, the viewfinders will indeed be black and white. There maybe be a way to reduce the camcorder's viewfinder brightness however. If you flip the camcorder over and look at the bottom of the viewfinder block, there may be a brightness control pot which will require a very small screwdriver to adjust. I can't recall if the v110's viewfinder can be adjusted or not. We're expanding the lab currently so all my cameras are offsite at the moment, otherwise I would check it out for you. My comment at 5:11 refers to an issue which plagues old Sony CCD cameras such as the v110. Over time there is this buildup for gunk which permeates the glass block which sits on top of the CCD housing. It causes the image to be fuzzy or "milky"-ish looking. I have a video which delves deeper into the problem:
      ua-cam.com/video/ZXsvCvwtplE/v-deo.html
      Good luck and I hope you're enjoying your vintage V110.

    • @davesretrovideolab2709
      @davesretrovideolab2709  2 роки тому

      Hey Jen. Most cameras should have some sort of format identifier on the camera. Essentially a big ol' sticker that reads Hi-8 or 8mm. If there is truly nothing on the camera, which says which format it is, look up the model number on the good ol' google and that should send you in he right direction. BTW, a Hi-8 cameras can playback 8mm tapes.

    Dave one question 🙋‍♂️:
    Can you recommend a vhs camcorder with manual aperture control ?

    • @davesretrovideolab2709
      @davesretrovideolab2709  2 роки тому +1

      Hmmm, good question. Most of the consumer camcorders with manual aperture control are basically all the same. Little plastically knob and is quite clunky and too sensitive. That being said, if you move up towards a "pro-sumer", "pro-line" or industrial grade cameras, you may get better manual aperture functionality for more "artistic shots'. I have a Panasonic AG456 which I'm itching to test to see if I can get nice bokeh for cinematic style lighting. I'm sure a camera like that won't even come close to what I want to achieve, but I'm certainly willing to give it a shot. I'm sure my answer was way more than what you wanted to know. Thanks for watching!

      According to one viewer, there may be a way to clear up the milky mess, but it requires taking apart the camera to get at it's CCD and replacing the block filter which sits right in front of it. I have a video (Sony BMC-550 Teardown which shows what this glass block looks like. Good luck!
